I'll just clear up the situation regarding the optimised any% run now... Me and AKA were working on it, but we put it on hold because we decided to wait for mupen64plus, which has the pause delay fixed. It isn't ready yet, so now, we're considering just moving on with the pause delay. If we moved on now, we could probably (hopefully) have the run finished by the end of summer at the latest.

This is the same situation as P.DOT several months ago. Although this beats the published run's time (not that hard to do...), it's still really suboptimal. So I voted no.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1369254079/swordlesslink-mario64-16stars%20-%20Copy.m64 Later, I might make a list of all the improvements over the published 16 star run and my published 0 star run, in the comparable sections.

I can't get into BitFS without getting the sub star though. Remember, this run doesn't use the "step" BLJing used to bypass DDD in the 0 star runs.

Here's something I hope you'll all enjoy. I've been working on this in secret for the past 4 or so months. It's an optimised 16 star TAS, using the lobby glitch, and no step BLJing. I know it won't be published on this site, but I made it because there was demand for it. This run finishes the game in 14 minutes and 27 seconds. This is 41 seconds faster than the last 16 star run (15:08) and 2 minutes faster than the first 16 star run. I'd like to thank the following people. mr_roberts_z: Support from the start, actively helping out with several parts of the run, doing some hex editing for me when I was unable to. BrianRuleZ: Helping out a lot towards the end of the run. BitS was largely his input. AKA and Rikku: Support from the start, reviewing my WIPs for mistakes and giving me constructive criticism and advice. If you have any questions about anything, you can ask here, or send me a PM here or on YouTube, or catch me in IRC. I can't be bothered listing every single improvement, so yeah. One thing I will say though, is that CCM is skipped in favour of two additional LLL stars. This was like 20 seconds faster than going to CCM. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=K3laTGxwZVk

He promised he would keep it secret. Well you were an idiot to trust him, weren't you? Running around telling people about the run is still stupid and immature.. And harassing someone over a 2 frame gain isn't? Don't be hypocrites, now.

Well, then maybe you shouldn't have been stupid enough to: 1. Tell Brian, who you KNEW I talked to. 2. Harass me over MSN about 2 frames that you saved in a part of the run that, when I did it, had never been done before. I know you personally didn't do this, but your little butt-buddy did.

Because there's no guarantee that that wouldn't fuck up the manipulation.

Not to mention, the level is slightly longer than the video length limit. My account has the time limit (and file size limit) removed on YouTube, so if need be, I could upload the WIPs.

Holy crap @ the following things: 1. how you got the first honeycomb piece. 2. standing underwater. 3. getting on top of the maze. I never even knew this was possible. Great job, as always.

Unlike most 2D Mario games, I was actually entertained by this, so not that it matters now, I voted yes. Although this shouldn't have been published as quickly as it was...

Nice trick, but visualising it optimised in my head, I don't think it'll be faster than the current strategy.

I guess this means the japanese rom could be done in under 3 minutes? Oh well, I was entertained so yes vote. Nah, it would be about 3:26.

Wow, nice one. How much time does this save? Your battle with the first part of the boss seemed to last a much shorter time than mine. Anyway, I'll impliment this and submit an updated version. EDIT: Just checked, saves 184 (just over 3 seconds) on entering the boss battle, and if the battle itself is actually faster, well...yeah, thanks for telling me. :)

It's impressive that you were able to finish a (U) version of the movie so quickly! <3 hex editing. I still think Soulrivers' TAS was a little more entertaining, but this TAS is still very fun to watch, espeically now that I can actually read the text ;) I'm giving this a 'yes' vote. If it was because I missed out stuff like doing up/down moves while falling before entering the 8th dungeon, well...that particular example is slower by 1 frame if you do anything while falling...also, the lack of cool moves during the battle was because I had to manipulate the boss to get as little lag as possible. But thanks. :) By the way, in the last submission, you said that 62 frames were saved over the previous version (ignoring the Japanese text), but here 69 frames were saved. Where did the extra 7 frames come from? You'll notice that this time, after getting the sword, I don't go onto the next screen while he holds it above his head. It's actually 3 frames faster to go left until he's stopped doing that, then go up a screen. As for the other 4 frames, well, I honestly don't know...I was only 3 ahead by the time I exited the boss room, so my only guess is that I had less lag on the way to the owl or something.

People don't watch a run in order to know what they are saying in the game, they watch the actual gameplay. And the gameplay isn't any different in the J version than the U version. Exactly...that's why I did it on this ROM instead of the english version...it would minimise the boring parts. Who cares if you don't understand it? Chances are, if you're seriously watching a TAS of this game, you'll know it well enough anyway.

I prefer understandable text, and if almost all of the improvement is due just to shorter displayed text, I'll vote No on this run. Well, let's see. Had I done this on the english version, I would've saved over a second. Look at the previous submission. Look how optimal it is, and notice how short the run already is. I think a second of improvements would be worth it on that, and since I was able to save that much, why not do it on the japanese run, which also cut the time significantly by removing a lot of the boring text?

Since this movie requires the J ROM to play correctly, and that ROM is notably more...difficult to get from the cart to the computer...than the U ROM, I've made a temporary encode. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MHTT41L3

One is in the works as we speak, although progress is temporarily halted. So just continue with your test run.
