Ah, I must've missed that line in the submission notes. My bad. I know this would ultimately be up to the judges but maybe levels 31-60 could be a separate branch/goal? I think there is still some merit in showcasing the harder levels.

I've been looking forward to the Famicom version of Bombliss contest mode being TASed. I enjoyed the 30 levels you played in this run, especially with some unusual solves like in level 20. However, you missed the extra 30 levels that are unlocked after the credits sequence you ended the run at. They are especially hard for a human to beat (source: I struggled to complete them on an original cart), and would be an excellent showcase of TAS abilities. The game has a soft reset button combination (A+B+Select+Start, just like in Nintendo's version). You can input this at any time, even during the BPS logo/legal info and credits sequences. I'm certain it saves time to input the combination in the former scenario. (The puzzle mode TAS missed this, which honestly baffles me) Yes vote based on the 30 levels that were completed here, but it needs to be expanded to a full 60-level run.

Welcome to TASVideos! I regret to inform you that this run is noticeably slower than the RTA world record of 5:02.685 for the equivalent category: https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/runs/yd2x27qm. Not only that, the inputs appear to prematurely end at the completion of 8-3 (did you upload an unfinished version by mistake?). The movie also contains obvious mistakes and suboptimal movement for a heavily optimised game such as this one. Frame-precise inputs are the expectation for this game. Another thing to note is that the SMB1 speedrunning community no longer approves FCEUX for submissions due to the default settings being deemed not accurate enough for high-level runs. BizHawk's NESHawk core is more appropriate for TASing this game (or NES games in general). I would recommend using the Userfiles to host work-in-progress movies, if that was the original intention here. However, don't let this discourage you! TASing takes time to do well. Find a game you're passionate about and don't mind sinking some time into. Do some routing to find the best path. Try optimising your inputs in the input editor. Look into the game's memory usage and code itself if you think it helps. Share your progress with others and collaborate. You'll find that it's a lot of fun.

If only there was an official peripheral which adds ROM cartridge support and two joystick ports...

I wanted to bring this up in a new topic since the Dandanator Mini got its own one. The Sinclair Interface 2 is an official cartridge ROM interface for the ZX Spectrum with 10 commercial titles as quoted below (from the ZXS wishlist). I figured an official peripheral would get better support compared to a homebrew one.

One wish I have is for ZXHawk to implement support for Sinclair Interface 2 (IF2) ROM cartridges. There were only 10 commercial releases in this format:
  • Jetpac
  • PSSST
  • Cookie
  • Tranz Am
  • Chess
  • Backgammon
  • Hungry Horace
  • Horace and the Spiders
  • Planetoids
  • Space Raiders
Prototype cartridges, third party conversions of various tape games, and unofficial cartridge hardware (>16KB ROMs) exist, but support (and movie publications) for these would be a low priority. There is a homebrew game called Mag the Magician which has a cartridge release. Various utilities like system test ROMs, ZX80/81 emulators (128K units only), and a bugfixed 48K system ROM also exist. The interface works by disabling the system ROM at $0000~$3FFF (ties /ROMCS to 5V) and mapping the cartridge ROM in its place. Details can be found at http://www.fruitcake.plus.com/Sinclair/Interface2/Interface/Interface2_Circuitry.htm. See Fuse for an emulator which implements IF2 ROM support. Note that the interface (including its joystick ports) does not work on +2A/+3 units due to incompatible pinouts. That behaviour should be emulated. Advantages in terms of TASing:
  • No tape loading is required, so movie times will better reflect actual gameplay
  • Game selection has good quality (PSION, Ultimate)
Disadvantages in terms of TASing:
  • Limited game selection
  • All commercial releases had tape versions (and the load times are already fairly short due to them targeting 16K units)
  • Limited unit selection due to +2A/+3 incompatibility
  • Only permitted joystick type is Sinclair, otherwise keyboard controls will need to be used
If IF2 ROM cartridge support is not being considered, then one can just treat this post as a wishlist for the games mentioned here.

Hi! I'm TakuikaNinja, and I'm a fan of retro gaming. I recently started TASing out of boredom, and I've been making a TAS of the homebrew NES game Troll Burner. (I'm aware that there's a "cancelled" run already on the site.) I think its short nature makes it a great choice for newbie TASers like me. Anyway, here's the run so far! Link to video (I'll upload the movie file to my user files later.) Edit: I went ahead and made version 2 of the run. Here's the movie: Movie #53207937719209865
