Nope, it won't (sort of).. I tried the 9th sword orb trick a few years back. Although the lv9 sword is called the "Mana Sword", it still won't do more than 1 damage to the last boss without mana magic cast on it.

Well then, if that's the case, then he missed the Cure formula (you get it just south of Fire Eyes' village then travel far to the west), or is he just picking that up on his trip back to that area near the end of the game?

Sorry for the lack of progress as of late.. I got all the way up to the fight with Lavos and was looking over ways to defeat him when school started picking up and I wound up with a lot of schoolwork to do over the last few weeks. However, things seem to be slowing down again, and spring break is about to start, so I should be picking up once again soon.

To Tilus: 1st, Im not sure what exactly you mean but I answer to 2 situations: at the very beginning right after talking with fire eyes first time and naming the dog I went to the ingredient seller (he has the most expensive prices in prehistoria on ingredients) to pick up 3 clays. You can't buy clay before you defeat Thraxx - giant bug, so I had to find them as much as I need to have enough hard balls to defeat him, all 18 were needed so it was perfect. Then after Thraxx I took many items from boxes like the very expensive nectar to sell it later and get the needed cash for ingredients and then (guess you mean this) I bought 6 essences for 15 each to sell it for 75 later on this way I win 60 talons for 1 = 360 in total, this is the best way to get many cash fast since the enemies don't give that many in prehistoria.
I guess I didn't explain myself properly. When you go left of Fire Eyes' village after defeating Thraxx, there's a small clearing with some pots and an alchemist which supplies you with the Defend formula. It seems like you just talk to him, pick up the Defend formula, and do nothing else with him besides pick up said formula (you don't buy any ingredients off of him or anything else). Do you plan on using the Defend formula (or the Speed formula, which you pick up in the Volcano in the same way) sometime later in the run?

Nicely done movie so far.. I like the coordination between the boy and the dog to pick up items and advance quickly at the same time, and the massive spamming of alchemy formulas on the bosses (I didn't know you could fire them off THAT quickly). Though I have to wonder about a couple things.. First, were picking up a couple of those alchemy formulas (such as the one hidden in the clearing west of Fire Eyes' village), where you don't immediately go and buy ingredients from the supplier afterward, really that necessary? Just seemed like a waste of time to me. Second, once you run out on your run gauge, why do you walk while waiting for the gauge to recharge instead of just rapidly tapping the run button, especially at times when you run out a short distance from the door? I always figured that to be faster than just waiting to recharge every time, but I may be wrong..

I was wondering about that myself, but realized that he was trying to pick up the 150 gold needed for the Dwarf Village (50 to enter the elder's sideshow, and another 100 to forge the Rusty Sword.. both are necessary to advance the plot, it seems) However, I also didn't like the level up sequence much.. couldn't you just manipulate some enemies to drop chests with gold/items in them and then sell them at the shop to get your 150 Gold faster, or at the very least, doing more "killing as you go" instead of running back and forth killing the same enemy over and over? Actually, now that I think about it, wouldn't you need only 100 Gold? You can still go through the sideshow by only paying the 50 entrance fee (you don't need to make the additional 100 gold donation to the sprite), and since you get it back immediately afterwards, you'll still have the 100 to pay for the sword forging.. Anyways, good run so far, and I'll be looking forward to more.

Off the top of my head, I can remember the following: - You can only get one of either Swallow Sword or Safe Helm from the Nu in the sealed pyramid - You lose the Blade/Hilt/Dreamstone when you forge together the Masamune the first time - I'm not certain if the Masamune has two instances in the item list (one for the regular version, and one for the upgraded version you get after the Northern Ruins), but if they do, you can only have one of them at a time. - To get the Sun Shades/Rainbow/Wondershot, you have to go through the whole Moon Stone quest, which means losing the Moon Stone So, that makes a total of six items that you can't keep while going through one trip of the game. Add that to the number of items dummied out, and subtract the total from 256 to get the maximum number of items you can keep in the game. There may be more, I may not have remembered them yet.

No comments, huh? I guess that means I finally know more about Chrono Trigger than the entire rest of the board combined XD *runs away quickly* Anyways, free time coming up soon, so I'll be going back to work on the movie. Though, I did take some time to think things through over on what I've done so far, and it looks like I may be able to cut enough off to save 30 minutes on my current time or more.. I'll have to see on my second pass how aggressive I can get on timesavers. Now, back to the Ocean Palace I go, on my *third* attempt through..

Nope, I realized that I can go the other way and avoid those enemies.. I brought that up way back when I released the second update. I guess I need to put together a very large list of things I need to improve on so far, so that people won't have to search through 7 pages of discussion on the game and that I'll have less repeat questions.. until then, could we please limit questions to the section of the movie updated in the last update (between Magus's castle and the Ocean Palace)?

Actually.. I don't think the problem lies in the difference between the Japanese and English versions of the game, it's much more likely the fact that the console version I've been playing all this time and have been basing some of my decisions on is a newer version than the Japanese version of the game and the English version most of you have been playing, which might have had some bugs in the programming fixed (sort of like the bugs fixed in version 1.1 of FF6). I have been going back over through the game when someone brings up some flag loophole I've missed, and usually I found out they were right, even though at the time I was recording I was 100% sure this was not the case.

Yeah, this is still the testing version. As for the sealed pyramid in Zeal, it's the same one as the one you unseal in 1000 AD - the equipment there was sealed away back then and placed out of reach, and isn't accessible until you get to it in 1000 AD. You can also see it in 600 AD hidden deep in the forest around the vicinity of Magus's castle, but again it's out of reach and inaccessible.

Yeah, I mentioned that I didn't spend a whole lot of time checking to see how much I can "cheat" on Spekkio's checking. However, even if I can't "cheat" enough to make any real difference in the path I take around the room, the fact that I was rubbing against the walls while walking around the room, which slows me down pretty considerably, is still true, so if I can keep myself slightly away from the wall I'll still be able to run around Spekkio faster.

Alright then, I guess since I have progressed pretty far, and added another hour and a half to the total time of the movie, here's the next version of the movie: Test run 1, update 4[/url], up to the beginning of the Ocean Palace. Actual time is 03:40:05 (combined between two movies, due to Snes9X WIP 1's movie limit), with the game time at 03:24. Use WIP 1 to watch this movie. Two save states are included - slot 0, at the beginning of the End of Time, and slot 1, at the beginning of Magus's Castle (both work on the first movie). As for notes, besides the usual stuff (needing to optimize movement, needing to optimize battles, avoid healing during battle when unnecessary, etc), there's a lot for this version: - Magus's Castle was a pain and a half to go through, and took over a half an hour to complete. (Yes, a half hour, for one dungeon.) Slash and Magus himself were the biggest contributors to the length of this dungeon - Slash just seems to take forever to bring down, especially given he has 6000 HP between two forms, and the best you can do is 400 damage X-Strikes, and I had to do an incredible amount of healing and luck manipulation to get Magus down in any decent amount of time and looking halfway decent. I don't really like either battle, as well, but I'm not certain how much more they can be optimized, though.. - There are a few battles in Magus's Castle I didn't avoid as well as I should have, especially the ones going up the first vertical set of ramps with the Rolies rolling down. - I do spend time fighting unnecessary battles in Magus's Castle to learn Heal with Frog, in the Hunting Range to pick up the necessary trading goods to get three Ruby Vests (along with weapons for Crono and Robo), in the Tyrano Lair to get Cat Attack with Ayla, and on the Mountain of Woe fighting Rubbles to build up Lucca's tech points faster. Magus's Castle and Tyrano Lair can definitely be improved on, though, and I'll need to do much better research on the enemy encounters in both dungeons to help save time. - The seemingly slow moving dialogue sequences involving Magus prior to battling him, as well as during Crono's dream sequence after defeating him, are autoscrolled by the game and can't be sped up by any means. - The scene in the main hallway outside the Queen's chambers in Zeal, where you watch Schala walk up to the strange sealed door and unseal it, must be viewed to advance the story - you can't charge the pendant otherwise. The same is true after defeating Giga Gaia - the game won't even let you leave the room until you talk to Melchior to receive the Ruby Knife. (It seems that by Magus's Castle or so, the CT programmers got much better with flag programming, and it's become much more difficult and rare to avoid battles and important events since then). - I intentionally suicide on the Golem fight on the first trip to Zeal to save time. Speaking of that, now that I know I can take out the Black Tyrano before it has a chance to fire off its' fire breath twice, I should only heal once immediately prior to its' bite to keep the bite target alive, to both save time healing and to allow the Golem to wipe out my characters more quickly. - The one item I unseal in 1000 AD from the sealed pyramid after getting exiled from Zeal is the Swallow for Crono, his third best (!!) sword in the game, and also raises his Speed quite a bit. It also makes dual techs involving Spincut really powerful, which I abuse over much of the next couple parts of the game. - While going back through 2300 AD to pick up Epoch, I take the "hard route" through lab 32 by not racing across on the bike. I actually found it to be much faster than spending the minute or so racing on the bike, and might go this way the first time around in 2300 AD and not race on the bike through the whole movie, if I'm able to. - While rapidly buying stuff in the Earthbound Village shop in 12000 BC, I intended to buy 3 Shelters instead of whatever I did wind up buying at the end of my buying spree (I don't recall which item I did buy), which explains my healing with items instead of a Shelter right before Giga Gaia, and my return trip to the shop after Giga Gaia is defeated to actually buy the shelters that time. There's probably a few other things that I can't remember off the top of my head.. anyways, if there's any comments about the run between the beginning of Magus's castle and the Ocean Palace, fire away.

Total time is around the 3 hour 30 minute mark, with game time around 3:20. I seem to be pretty well on pace to beat the game in 4:30.. I guess that all depends on how long powerleveling from level 27 or so to the upper 30s on the Geno Dome conveyor belt takes.

Okay, I've managed to beat the Mud Imp.. it didn't heal itself nearly as often as I thought it would, and so I was able to take it down pretty quickly with Crono + Lucca + Marle. I also think this will be the last difficult boss before Lavos - Giga Gaia was a pushover (it only managed to pull off its' double hand team attack once, and afterwards it was almost all bashing its' face in), and it was simply amusing to see how quickly I could rip through Dalton's 4000 HP. I don't expect the GolemTwins to be all that difficult either, especially with a full set of Ruby Armor on my characters to lessen Fire damage, and Dalton Plus should be another cakewalk. However, I got a rather large way through the Ocean Palace, almost right before facing the GolemTwins, before suddenly I loaded the wrong savestate on a rerecord and wound up back at the beginning of the dungeon.. I'm probably going to take a break from the run for a little while (maybe about a week or so) before I get going again.

Man, I hated this game so much >_< I rented it a couple times, and never really got any good with it. I beat King Dedede on normal mode I think only once, and even then it was only through sheer luck that I managed to pick up a heavy chain, and Dedede stacked himself near the top of the screen once it hit. I was much much better at Tetris Attack anyways. It was a shame, though, that you didn't do any REALLY REALLY REALLY big combos, but then again, they probably would've been a waste of time anyways. Yes vote from me.

Umm.. *looks up in an FAQ* 354 EXP, 1200 G, and 10 TP. Nothing to write home about. No weaknesses, or strengths, either. (Yeah right, it's got really high physical defense, and pretty good magic defense too). So, it comes down to what's the fastest way to down it, or if there even is a way at my low level besides knocking off the Beasts first. Anyways, the things I know are: - My party average level is 21, with everyone at that level but Crono (22), Ayla (23), and Marle (20). - I only have the fourth tech for everybody but Ayla, who only has up to the third. Both Crono's Lightning2 and Frog's Leap Slash are ~150 TP away from being learnt, so Spire is out. Ayla doesn't know Rock Throw yet (and is also a good ways away from learning it), so Falcon Hit is out too. - It frequently heals itself and all its' allies for 150 HP, probably even counterattacks with the heal at lower HP levels - Antipode: does ~190 damage, but this requires me to use Crono/Marle/Lucca, the latter two of which have no defense whatsoever and will likely just get trampled by the Beasts due to Crono not being able to heal fast enough - Any other double tech based partly on Crono's Lightning, Lucca's Fire, or Marle's Ice (Fire Sword, Ice Tackle, Volt Bite, etc): ~150 damage - Anything else does much less damage. My current best option, I think, is to use Crono/Frog/Ayla and fire off Volt Bite, support myself with Heal, and fire off the occasional Water, and hope that it doesn't heal itself very often (or at least try to manipulate him out of healing).. I guess I'll try that tomorrow. Oh, and what you're talking about are Rubbles.. I don't fight them until the very next area[/i]. Augh~!

Answers to your question: There's a very big chance that I won't even pick up Haste with Marle in the run at all, let alone use it in battle. I'm mightily struggling with the game's horribly inconsistant battle menus - for example, selecting Techs from the menu sometimes requires about 15-20 frames to open up, during which, even on Wait battle mode, the battle gauges of the other allies and enemies continue to fill up.. sometimes, if my allies have acted immediately before my turn comes up, the battle gauge will have risen back up halfway once I finally get the menu open. You'll notice this effect the most during the Black Tyrano fight in the next update - I usually only get one tech in before the Tyrano continues its' countdown.. because of this, Haste won't have nearly as great an effect as one would expect from the spell, and outside of Ice-based or healing double techs she's usually dead weight in a battle. And now, an update.. I just got back to work on the run a few days ago after about a week long break, and I've obtained the Epoch and gotten back to Zeal (the second trip there).. and I've hit a roadblock on the Mud Imp fight. I'm still trying out strategies, but so far I haven't come up with anything that'll let me take down the Mud Imp quickly without horribly dying from its' attacks. If all else fails I can still fall back on the widely used plan of killing the Beasts first and then letting the Mud Imp run, but I want to save that as a last resort.

Yeah, I meant easytype, which is the same as what you were doing. I wound up with about the same amount of time as you did (0:58-0:59), so maybe my strategy isn't really any better than yours, but basically what I did was levelled up Rydia a little bit between when I get Tellah in the waterfall cave and the save point where the tent cutscene occurs.. just enough to get high enough level for Rydia to use Lit-2. I would then use the extra MP Rydia gains for extra chocobo summons, which would make the Octomamm, Antlion (it can't counterattack magic, and Chocobo summon is your strongest weapon), and MomBomb fights faster. The rest of the game, though, your strategy is almost certainly better than what my idea would've been (which is to level Cecil a little coming down Mt. Ordeals, live on that until you get to the Tower of Bab-il and harvest monsters off an Alarm there, then use that EXP to cruise until the Giant, where you harvest Attackers/Defenders until you're high enough level to beat the game). But 4 hours to beat all of FF4.. I'm impressed. The cheat-filled "walkthrough movie" on zophar, which disables all random combat and cheats to obliterate bosses as fast as possible, is about 3 hours long, so that's not a whole lot of extra time you spend to build up legitly. I'll be looking forward to this movie.

What kind of time do you usually make it to achieving Paladinhood with Cecil at? (Just checking, since I've attempted a speedrun of FF4 as well, and there are a couple things I did differently which may make it slightly faster than your version up to this point). Also, in the Giant, what kind of dragons does the Searcher summon? If it were Red Ds or Blue Ds or some other dragon that gives 20000+ EXP/kill I could understand this being the fastest way, but if not, then why not harvest Attackers/Defenders off the CPU? They give 50000 EXP each and can be killed fairly quickly as well.

Alright, I've beaten Magus, as well as the Black Tyrano. Indeed, Magus was much easier in the second phase of the battle than the first, and going through the Tyrano Lair was even easier. Unfortunately, I did have to do a bit of power leveling at the door before Nizbel 2 in order to get Ayla Cat Attack, and thus Volt Bite.. it was only 4 additional battles to do so, and it's a heck of a lot faster than poking away at Nizbel's 7000-ish HP with 300-400 damage Napalms from Lucca. This leaves four bosses left to beat (the Mud Imp, Giga Gaia, Dalton, and the GolemTwins), before I'll reach the Ocean Palace disaster. And, unfortunately, I'm already rapidly approaching the 3 hour mark on the game, and it'll be highly unlikely I'll beat the game in under 4 hours. 4 1/2 hours is my estimate now, at least on this test run, and that too may be a bit on the low side.. oh well.

Alright, slight update from my camp.. I'm sure you're wondering why it's taking so long for me to put together an update. You can thank Magus and his nighmarish castle of doom for that. =P Basically, I have to beat Slash (whose 2 forms combined have nearly as much HP as Magus himself!), Flea (who has 4000 HP of his/her/its' own), gain enough TP to learn Heal with Frog, then take out Magus and his nightmarish 6666 HP.. at level 16.. with no decent single target Lightning or Shadow techs at your disposal. The battle with Magus has two halves - the first half, when attacked he randomly counterattacks with an element spell, after which he's only vulnerable to magic of that element, and the second half, where he just fires off DarkMatter. The second half will be easy - I can just get into a pattern of repeatedly using FireSword with Crono/Lucca and having Frog heal damage.. it's the first half which has been the greatest annoyance. Right now I've knocked off about a fourth of Magus's HP, or about halfway through this half of the battle, but I'm having to do extensive luck manipulation by performing different orders of actions, in order to not waste time and not let Magus use the Lightning or Shadow spell. And, I'm hoping this battle won't take too much longer.. I've already spent nearly 30 minutes[/i] in that obnoxious castle already! Knowing this, I am definitely not looking forward to Tyrano Lair..

Unfortunately this is not the case - I had heard about this before, and tried it out. I tried accessing Giant's Claw while just obtaining Toma's Pop, and I tried accessing Giant's Claw while just entering Toma's grave without pouring the Pop on his grave, and neither time did I get access to Giant's Claw. You MUST pour the Pop on his grave in order to enter.

Alright, I'm finished with my testing.. and I've got my plan for the entire rest of the game all worked out. Lavos is very easily and very quickly beatable at lv40.. Doors of Doom, Shadow Doom Blaze, and Dreamless all have about the same attack power, and I take ~500-600 damage from each with 80 M.Def. My equipment for the final battle will be as such: Magus: DoomScythe/Gloom Helm/Gloom Cape/Blue Rock Robo: Crisis Arm/Vigil Hat/Moon Armor/Wall Ring Lucca: Whatever/Sight Cap/ZodiacCape/Gold Stud This will get everyone protection vs. statuses and 80+ M.Def at lv40 (Magus will be above the others, at 43-44, since he joins at 37). Lucvca's low HP will be a problem, though - I may wind up dropping her Sight Cap for the Taban Helm, upping her M.Def and speed as a sacrifice for losing Chaos immunity, if necessary (in fact, I just might do this, since Lavos 2's attack pattern after the arms are dead is Obstacle (inflicts Chaos on all) -> Shadow Slay (inflicts poison on all, overwriting Chaos) -> Flame Battle -> Shadow Doom Blaze-> Evil Emanation -> stall -> repeat). Also, this will require me to travel to a couple more places than I originally thought, so here's my new plan for the game after the Blackbird goes down: 12000 BC: - Get Magus. Switch party to Robo/Magus/Lucca. 600 AD: - Get Toma's Pop and talk to the repairman of the Northern Ruins to learn his tools have been stolen. 1000 AD: - Pour Toma's Pop over his gravestone to open up Giant's Claw. - Get the Tools. 600 AD: - Go into Giant's Claw, picking up the Sight Cap, Blue Rock, and ZodiacCape. - Complete the Northern Ruins subquest (everything there dies to Magus's Fire2) and examine the chest with the Nova Armor in it. Optimally, I'll learn Flare here, allowing me to use OmegaFlare. - Go into Ozzie's Fort, spam OmegaFlare on Super Slash and Flea Plus, and pick up Magus's best equipment and a Speed Tab (likely going on Lucca). 2300 AD: - Complete the Geno Dome sidequest, taking as many trips on the conveyor belt that are necessary that, while combined with the EXP I get on all these other sidequests, will wind up with Robo and Lucca at lv40, as well as picking up some speed/M.Def bonuses for Robo, the Vigil Hat, an Elixir and a Megalixir, and his Crisis Arm. This step might be moved around somewhere else, Ill have to think about it. 1000 AD: - Go back to the Northern Ruins and pick up the Moon Armor for Robo. - Go into the Black Omen, spamming a couple of OmegaFlares onto Giga Mutant, then going about a third of the way through, picking up about 5-6 Megalixirs (Ayla will wind up Charming one or two off the Ruminators, so I might as well stick with her and pick up a Gold Stud off a Flyclops as well.. I may even get a Speed Tab or two off the Panels). - Hop into Epoch and take a deep breath. 1999 AD: - Crash Epoch into the head of Lavos 1, taking it out, then let loose with OmegaFlare on Lavos 2 and Lavos Core. - Enjoy the ending! I think I'll be ready to continue the run in a couple of days, once I've more fully recovered, and I'm pretty sure I'll wind up with a final time of 3 1/2 to 4 hours once all's said and done.

Oh, that.. the SightScope was still there since I had nothing else better to put in its' place. It will eventually be removed and replaced with something else - at the very latest, it'll be replaced with Crono's SilverStud after the Ocean Palace, so that OmegaFlare doesn't instantly chew through a large portion of Lucca's MP supply.
