Posting my current, but failed, any% WIP: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/29016843998994358 Dies because I'm unable to get the right value for the invisble barrel (000D4D) and I have no idea why. Giving up on this for now.

I just did a little on the first two stages, but I don't mind helping out on this =). SMB3 TASing is too much fun.

A slow game made slightly faster is always a good thing =). I'm not a huge fan of you using VBA for this, but it's still not completely banned at least.

A new any% TAS has been done already: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm28011951 It's my input for most levels, except for the end of Manic Mincers and Misty Mine. There are a few other things to improve in my old TAS (I think...). But this shows nicely how the new TAS will look like.

The way I see it, with "gameplay", is that every input press you make while the game is on, is playing the game. As the game consists of the cartridge/disc/whatever, when you feed it controller inputs, you are playing the game. Not matter if this is moving around on the overworld, equipping your character or deleting a savefile. They are all part of the game, they are all playing the game. One thing that practically is not playing the game, is standing still and waiting for something to happen. Standing still, not pressing a single button, for 10 minutes until something happens. Are such glitches OK? They are clearly not gameplay, as you don't feed the game any input. Probably a silly comparision, yes. I just think it's also silly to not say that things done on the file select screen are not part of the game/playing the game, because to me it is.

Would you consider a game that was modded to simply show the end credits a legit completion of said game? (Note emphasis.) If not, then think about the reasons why not. Why would you not consider it a legit completion?
Simple answer is "no". Because a modified version of game X will instead be game Y. Making it not a legit completition of game X because it doesn't exist anymore. Which is also why modded games are disallowed in default. But yes, it's a legit completion of game Y. To me, this is extremely obvious really... If something in-game does the same exact thing as the modded game, it will be allowed. The same way a glitch that makes you invincible is allowed, but a cheat code doing the same effect is not. But yeah, I'm also missing your real point with this, as, which people have stated, it's a completely different scenario altogether.

Guess I could make an update here as well... We have now made it to the 4th dungeon; Temple of Droplets. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/28123975573682684 Link to video Might redo a part because of messed up item switches...) Or not, ended up being slower.

It being done in 1-3: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/574996523/1-3%20SuperJumpRoll.smv Just to show its potential in many other levels, not only the "obvious" ones. Of course, that's not useful for 101% however, and it's basically equal in time compared to the regular method =). There are a couple of variations done to this and other effects. When you do a Super Jump Roll (SJR) like this, you can either get the variation where you can roll out of the jumproll, which was seen in the Forest Frenzy version. This requires that you get a "double star" kill, when you see two "hit stars" when killing the enemy. I'm not certain on when this occurs however, compared to one star. If you only get one star, you can't roll afterwards. Though if you have the jumproll land you on the ground, when you start walking out of it, you can start rolling by ducking first. By doing this you can both get the glitch to work at "one star only" spots, and also delay when to start the roll in order to hit more enemies for more speed before taking off. Conclusion: I like this glitch.

So very few people have ever completed games then? Except for older games where you have no save feature. But for all other games that are designed to power on and off the console, you aren't allowed to do this in order to beat the game? It's certainly, no question about it, part of the game. Why you shouldn't be allowed to do this makes no sense in my eyes...

So... A new glitch was found yesterday by RainbowSprinklez: http://www.twitch.tv/tompa/v/34893618 This will work, and likely save time, in lots and lots of levels. Not as many for 101% as for "All stages" however. The any% TAS is also improveable, which I'll make another April 1st submission for I suppose :).

8 frames can be saved on the name select by using Start and not go down to Done.

Just to clarify: Tompa = Adelikat, Masterjun and Mothrayas. And yes, we had the same 4 hours. Without having the time to understand and optimise the stick drops, we were forced to go with what we had at the time, in order to at least have a submittable file in the end. Other than that, we lost lots of time in the end by not knowing that the coffee made you run faster. So RIP.

Second stage, ahead by 12 now. Also lost time because of lag differences in the level, though I got some back later on. Pretty nice overall.

I need to wait another week at least before I'm able to watch your WIPs as well as helping out myself. As that's when my new computer will be up and ready. Just so you know =).

I guess I'll just go into detail on the time loss required for it: First off, in order to bounce on that many enemies, almost all in 8-Tank 1, to get enough lives will require the leaf. The current "warps" run gets 90 lives in 8-Tank with this method. A few can (Though with the cost of lag and/or not being able to clip far into the screen) be done on 8-Ship after the fire has been collected. And very limited in 8-Tank 2. We use the P-wing in 7-4, which allows us to have the leaf from this point and on. This leaf is required to be kept up to 8-Ship 2, where the Fire Flower will be re-obtained. Meaning that: 7-6 will be slower because of leaf physics, the clip in 7-7 will be a lot slower (If it's even possible with a leaf, actually doubtful, if not: MANY seconds lost), 7-9 will also be slower, 7-Airship will both be slower because we can't clip into the floor before the boss and no fire against the boss is a gigantic time loss. Leaf in 8-Tank1 actually makes it possible to reach the boss a few frames faster, but you'll lose lots more because you can't kill the boomerang bro quickly so you'll need to wait for the boomerang to disappear. And then finally, 30 frames to regain the Fire in 8-Ship2, which will compensate for the time saved to not take damage in 7-Fort 1. Edit: One idea is to get the leaf during 8-Tank, which would indeed work. But it won't be enough to reach 99 to get it that late in the tank level. In conclusion: This is a GIGANTIC waste of time. While those 27 frames we lose for entertainment was to include something new and original, compared to losing 30 seconds to something that's been done for 12 years. So yeah... No.

The speed with Donkey Kong is very nice to see! This is continuing to be a great run, highly underrated in comparision to YI.

The reason for not getting 99 lives is the same as for the 100% run: It's an unneccesary waste of time that will showcase something already done in multiple runs since 2003. It's nothing original, it's nothing unique and it's nothing we want to sacrifice time for. Yes, we could easily get some more points, coins and lives without wasting any time, though nowhere close to 99. Is it really worth to care that much for? No, it is not. If you want to see a run with 99 lives, we already have several of those where the category and power up in use makes it doable, impressive and interesting: http://tasvideos.org/1590M.html But please, drop these discussions for every single SMB3 run, it's tiring. Thanks.
