micro500 contacted me and has been added to the random group. Single players have been changed to people randomly assigned to a team, to avoid confusion. It was suggested to me to reduce the "teams locked" time before competition starts from 2 weeks to 1 week, and to start the competition in two weeks: 29 October. How would the participants feel about this?

Thanks boct1584, I will put you in the random group. Maybe I should clarify: everyone will be assigned to a team, noone will have to work alone. (Well, theoretically you could enter as a 1-man closed team...)

So... here we go! This topic will contain all the info for Dream Team Contest #3. 1) Game choice First, I'd like to thank everyone for the many suggestions for games that were sent in. Thanks! And the game for this competition is... Alien Hominid for GBA! Get TASing, people! Alien Hominid is a run and gun game, in the vein of Metal Slug and Contra. There are different weapons to choose from, grenades, a pretty large moveset, lots of bosses. The weapon drops are random, so there is some luck manipulation. There is some saucer flying, but don't worry, it's not auto-scrolling. Also, it is not too long. I think it has potential to result in varied and interesting movies. ROM: Alien Hominid [E], sometimes numbered 2310 MD5: 18EF4EC828A4BF14B6FD241230BB349A Rules: * Hard difficulty. * Use English mode. * Death is allowed. * There is one extra button press needed after killing the last boss. You need to get to the ending, not just kill the last boss. I understand this might create some controversy. Here is for example what Atma said: "oh hey, I got all these possibly awesome suggestions that I asked people for, but I'm going to go with one I chose before that anyway" This was NOT the process used. Some suggestions were great, some were not so great. I narrowed it down to a list of 5 games, test played, watched youtube playthroughs, read FAQs etc. Of the top two contender games I had, one was too long (70 minutes regular playthrough), one had desynch issues, and the other suggestions were not as varied and interesting. ---- The emulator is: VBA! Important info: there are some bug fixes in the pipeline. adelikat has promised to get a new release out before the competition starts, so that everyone will have the same tools available. 2) Team formation Signup is closed. Please see below for teams. This will work a bit differently from previously. I will allow people to sign up both as teams and as single players. There is no limit on the number of teams, but the team size will be limited to 4 when signing up as a team. If you sign up as a team with less than 4 players, please specify if it's okay to have other random players in your team (open team) or if you'd rather keep to yourselves (closed team). You can also say that you want to participate. You will then be randomized into either an open team or an all-random team. The team size might be 5-6 for these teams (depending on if we get unlucky with the number of players). Signed up closed teams: Team 1, Totally Awesome Syzygy) Xkeeper, alden, Acmlm, Kumquat Team 2, Tortoise) DarkKobold, adelikat, Cardboard, Tompa Team 3, If We Lose It's Erokky's Fault) Atma, erokky, kirkq, Nitrodon Team 4, Tastards) Sonikkustar, MUGG, Aqfaq, Mukki Signed up open teams: none Signed up random teams: Team 5) FatRatKnight, micro500, NitroGenesis, pirate_sepiroth Team 6) boct1584, Mitjitsu, Twisted Eye 3) Starting date It was decided in the poll that the competition would run 3 weeks, 4 weekends. Proposed timeline: Friday 22 October, CET 22:00 (t= -1 week) Signup closes. Teams are announced. Emulator is announced. (This is because some people do not want to play some emulators. Also, people should have time to get used to a potentially new emulator.) Friday 29 October, CET 06:30 (t=0) Competition starts! I will update this post with the game, and other info if necessary (difficulty mode and other settings, what counts as beating the game). Sunday 21 November, CET 22:00 (t= 3 weeks and 2 days) Competition finishes. Submissions must be sent to me before this. Use either Microspace + Forum PM, or email (see my personal page). You can send more than one movie file. Only the last movie file you send counts. Late movie files are NOT accepted. I will check the post times. 4) Results The results are in! Team 1, Totally Awesome Syzygy) Xkeeper, alden, Acmlm, Kumquat Clocking in at 61081 frames. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1555697375/Alien%20Hominid%20TAS%20by%20Team%20Totally%20Awesome%20Syzygy.vbm As a bonus, team 1 also submitted a version which enters a name in the highscore table: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/36110321/Alien%20Hominid%20TAS%20by%20Team%20Totally%20Awesome%20Syzygy%20(+Name).vbm Team 2, Tortoise) DarkKobold, adelikat, Cardboard, Tompa Clocking in at 66516 frames. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1523749886/AlienHominidTeamTortoise.vbm Team 3, If We Lose It's Erokky's Fault) Atma, erokky, kirkq, Nitrodon Did not finish, and chose not to send in their work in progress. Team 4, Tastards) Sonikkustar, MUGG, Aqfaq, Mukki Did not send a complete movie. MUGG left the team halfway through, but was kind enough to let me have the latest version he had: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/839009667/sonik3%20-%20redo.vbm I have been unable to contact any of the others. Team 5) FatRatKnight, micro500, NitroGenesis, pirate_sepiroth Clocking in at 56985 frames. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/432716846/AH_DTC3_T5_56985.vbm Team 6) boct1584, Mitjitsu, Twisted Eye Did not send a movie. I have been unable to contact any of them. This means that the winners are... Team 5! Big congratulations to FatRatKnight, micro500, NitroGenesis, pirate_sepiroth, the movie looks awesome. In second place... Team 1, Totally Awesome Syzygy In third place... Team 2, Tortoise DNF: Team 3, If We Lose It's Erokky's Fault Team 4, Tastards Team 6 I have put up a wiki page which will lists each section of the movies for comparison. It is here: http://tasvideos.org/DreamTeamContest3.html This is because the forum does not handle tables.

I am also interested in participating in this. But, since I am still working on that last dream team contest movie Atma mentioned, I'm thinking maybe I should run the competition instead. That is, unless someone else really wants to do it or people somehow find me unfit for running it.

I like this movie! Lots of action, everything looks optimal. I vote yes. What could be nice in the description is what each character looks like. After a while I figured out that the red one was the thief and the blue one was the fighter. I still don't know exactly who is who of the other three. It was also a bit confusing in the beginning which door you actually entered, until I realized that only the last door entered mattered. Perhaps that's just me being dense, but I guess it wouldn't hurt explaining the mechanics of the game a little more.

Well, perhaps there is a better and more exact answer, but for me what you said is good enough. You gave an iterative function by which it is possible to calculate the number of bosses. I don't have a "correct" answer if that's what you're thinking.

1) Thank you arflech. 2) Pointless Boy, I guess I wasn't clear enough on the problem formulation for this, because f(101)=14 and f(1)=1. Randil also seems to have understood the problem in another way than I intended. Perhaps a better explanation is: every employee needs a boss. A boss can handle at most 10 people below him/her. Every boss needs another boss, unless s/he is the head of the organization. A boss can only handle bosses below him/her of the same rank. rhebus already solved it though.

1) Calculate the integral of f(x) dx, from 0 to 1, where f(x) is described as: 0 when x is a rational number 1 when x is an irrational number 2) Assume that a company has X working employees, excluding management. For every 10 employees, a boss is needed to supervise that group. For every 10 bosses on that level, another boss is needed. For example, for X=100, 11 bosses are needed. For X=101, 14 bosses are needed. What is a good function for calculating how many bosses are needed for any X number of employees?

I think the difficulty selections of different releases aren't comparable. SoR3 scales damage depending on difficulty level, and BK3 doesn't. That's why BK3 on hardest is a cakewalk, SoR3 on hardest is very difficult. Oh yeah, the TAS. Someone please finish it. atro city already said it was okay to continue off his run.

One that I can do! There are infinitely many solutions to the "pounds and pence" problem, but here is one: Start with 199.98 pounds. Half is 99.99 pounds, which is also 98 pounds and 199 pence. Any integer solution where 98 a = 199 b will work, where a is the pounds and b is the pence you start with.

This is pretty neat. :) I understand that red is "I do damage here", but what is the difference between green and blue? And is that yellow on one picture?

>Im talking about the glitch that forces the U rom to run in Japan mode when under auto-detect. It seems to be on the latest version of Gens too. I don't remember the details, but when investigating this (yikes three years ago) the ROM is actually set to be valid for Japan. So the emulator behaves the expected way. You can still set it to U manually before starting to record.

Spider-Waffle, perhaps you could write down how the SC 64 bugs work? What to click on in which order? It seems many people would be interested in this, and it would help to get a SC tas get going.

Possible explanation for lower time on PC: there is a dialogue bug. Usually the timer runs while people are speaking, but it's possible to pause the PC version just before this happens. So it's not really faster, it's just less time on the clock. I'm not sure if that is the reason on this level. rhebus: Early versions of Starcraft had a bug called Command Center slide. It's not possible on the latest version. I remember reading it was fixed before it was ported to N64, but that could of course be wrong. PC speedruns seem to use whichever SC version which is faster for that particular level. So a lot of the PC times will not be possible to beat.

No plans to use death, but I guess we will use it if it turns out to be faster. So far it hasn't, but if a level has many possibilities for damage boosts it might be beneficial to use a continue. We'll see! :) The drop time for the targets in level 3 aren't constant... they depend on the RNG seed at the start of the level. We think we have it figured out though, much thanks to mz who dug through the assembler.

Hey Jungon! I think all the points you suggested are correct. That movie up there is pretty old though, and paul_t doesn't seem to be around anymore. Me and RandomPie have fixed all the problems you mention in our current movie. It's progressing slowly, but I think it will pick up speed now that we are on stage 3 (stage 2a was hard to optimize).

Hello Xarthok! Some Keen 1-3 runs sounds great, I would watch them. Get started. :) It was too long since I played them to give any meaningful advice, and you seem to know plenty about the game anyway.

If it's only a few seconds, you might even get to obsolete the current movie. How many seconds are we talking exactly?

EDIT: this run does not use the spindash at all, in spite of the submission text saying "mainly". Metropolis 2 is vastly improved from the published run. This one is 0:16, published one is 0:43. It seems to be a known improvement.
