I used frame advance (how else could one do it?), and even pressed dash a frame earlier and one later each time to be sure. No shinespark. Memory peeking won't work with the instable combination of snes9x and wine I have to use here. Hence the question.

has quick shinespark charging been disabled in this hack? I can't do it, but that might be me..

I had some trouble with walljumping at first, too. Here's a hint: to walljump you have to be next to a walljumpable wall and press away from it. If you just do this, you'll see samus clinging to the wall, but still dropping down. when samus clings to the wall, you can jump off of it. you should ideally press left or right and jump at the same moment. If you press jump a little later, you'll lose some height from sliding down the wall, but still make the jump. Pressing jump too early will cause you to drop down. in short, if you have a high failure rate, try to press jump a little later than left/right. hope this helps.

U-Shaped room.. this was difficult. It was also completely useless. This room has no invisible tubes or passable blocks (I've had some friends search the walls), no power-bombable blocks, and at least the visually interesting spots were completely unimpressed by normal bombs either. I give up.

I wish to retract my previous statement >> you shouldn't be allowed to pass the point of no return towards kraid without 3 energy tanks. two energy tanks are at obvious locations you have to pass to reach kraid, the third one is beyond the point of no return (and even marked on the map), so it's no issue here. Sorry for complaining too early.

Yeah, people kept telling me this about Metroid Prime, too. Also, this hack seems to borrow a lot of ideas from that game, something that everyone else probably thinks is great, but not me so much.
I never played Prime, I wouldn't know. I got used to the new physics (don't mind them, but wouldn't see them as an improvement either) and I like the Zero Mission-like map-screen. Oh, those torizos.. oh well. You're right about Crateria, those little critters take a ridiculous amount of shots to be killed. They seem to become weaker once you reach Brinstar (don't ask me about the logic behind that), and the running & killing is more fluent later. oh, did I mention I'm stuck again? Don't tell me to IBJ out of the lava, the readme says it's not required to beat the game. The next item has to be somewhere in this room or the last two, and I already searched the last two for a while.. /edit:

Also, download the newest version of the patch, which makes a couple of things (like that reflector) a little clearer.
I downloaded the zip again, it's still marked as version 1.0, but has a different checksum. Do you know if it's safe to re-use my savestates, or at least the in-game-saves? (still stuck though, either there were no changes in this room, or the room was already in memory for whatever reasons)

I was playing and it seems that I've gotten stuck.
Go through the door on your right. Don't come out until you got a new item (maybe two). and don't touch the lava, it's hot. I just did something new: if you ever think you need a freezable enemy to step on, but don't have one where you need it, it's possible to let the wall-suckers drop down and cling to another wall. I tried this for a while but failed.. then accidently figured it out while trying something completely different somewhere else ;) However, this got me into yet another room that needs a power bomb, so I'm still stuck after getting the ice beam. Help? edit #2: gaah! thx moozooh. I've climbed that shaft a couple of times, but always overlooked the small thing I needed to see..

I have 2, so unless the third is somewhere in this locked down section I guess I'm screwed.
There is another energy tank down there that's probably not supposed to be gotten at this point, but I successfully retrieved it with 3 tanks (and lots of savestates). It might be possible to grab it with 2 tanks if you abuse everything the emulator has to offer. But unless you know the physics of the game well, restarting (or going back to an old save if you got one) is easier. The game should really have a check for that.. you shouldn't be allowed to pass the point of no return towards kraid without 3 energy tanks. Was it too difficult to code a door for that? :( as for my progress, I got the ice beam and am stuck again. One way in norfair that's blocked by a wall (above the map room), one way in norfair that'll kill me too fast (just below ice beam). Both ways in Brinstar leading back are blocked by power bomb blocks, another way blocked by power-bomb-glass.. one way needs either high-jump-boots or a freezable monster (and the only monsters in that room refuse to go there). There's also a passable pipe there, leading me into a spike pit. Another way is hard to reach, has deadly spikes and a pipe that's just a little too high to enter. So far, zero uses for the ice beam that didn't lead into a dead end. any pointers where to search for new ways are appreciated..

oh well, it is possible with 3 energy tanks. I don't think it's possible without abusing savestates though (at least not for me). I saved at each new room and after several attempts, I reached the first safe point with 4 health left, the second with 7 health left. Gah. There goes my decision to play unassissted. despite the horrible difficulty I still like the hack.

sounds easy ;) is it even possible with 3 energy tanks? In one direction I could only find a map station (nice death trap) and an unpassable wall, in the other direction I just run for a while until the heat gets me. And I can't trace back to pick up any energy tanks I could have missed because I lack the ice beam and the wall is too slippery for wall jumps.. do I have to restart now?

That's a good rule, I didn't know about it.
there are no written rules for stars, but it's observable if you followed star-discussions on previous runs. long runs vs. short runs is always a matter of taste, let's not go there. To me the 96-exit run had enough variety to watch it more often than the pure speedruns. But again, that's just my taste. Also, please remember that stars aren't given as rewards to the author, or as an acknowledgment to new discoveries. Stars are awarded as recommendations for first-time-viewers. Those have a different perspective on runs than we do. Can you imagine a first-timer saying "wow, I like how he avoided fade-out-lag there" ? Me neither. I wouldn't know which of the two runs should get the star, but I like bisqwit's solution with the nifty green star.

well, there's the "only 1 star per game"-quota, and there's already a star at the 96 exit run. The question is not if this run is star-material, the question is whether this run or the 96-star-run deserves the star most.

nice hack :) as usual, I'm stuck, but I'll keep trying to find that super missile (or whatever is next) edit: one day I'll figure out why I can be stuck for half an hour, but will always find the next item 2 minutes after I posted about being stuck. Back to playing.

Another No, because you didn't get the Super Missiles early like in your last run. That should have saved at least a minute. Also because you scared me with the mental image of a "96-exit Fabian". I'll never read your submission books again!

I had this idea a while ago as well, it slumbers in my brain along with a lot of other emulation-related ideas I'd really like to implement someday, although it's likely that I never will.. :/ Writing code for the creation of a savestate-index is pretty straightforward, using them intelligently may be more difficult. Fast-Forwarding isn't the main benefit of a keyframe-index - seeking is. To do that right, you'd need a media-player-like scrollbar, maybe even play/pause-buttons, or a gui for the chapter index. I shied away from implementing it because I wouldn't want to implement it 5 times on 5 different emulators (FCEU, snex9x, Gens, VBA, mupen). oh, I use Windows-snes9x under linux with wine. Don't hurt me please, I like GUIs. ;) greetings, Tub

the magician is weaker and has to waste time to avoid enemys, those 2 or 3 seconds for card drops are gone quite fast. On the other hand, he should have more mana and needs less refills to keep running (which in turn adds even more delays for damage avoiding). You'll also save time by not entering the menu twice on each spell change. I have no idea what'll turn out to be faster, but I doubt that magician mode adds anything entertaining after you've watched the glitched normal run.

What, this game dares to call itself Turrican? I'm coming from the Amiga, and it saddens me to see platform action in huuuuge levels being replaced by just a little platform action on tiny levels mixed with autoscrolling, while listening to horrible music. Well, there WERE walkers (although they didn't sound well when stepped on), and there was the usual crappy story, but.. it just isn't what I loved about Turrican any more. I wasn't entertained by this run. It looked sloppy at times, and I disagree with the gem collection goal. Then again, it might also have been the game, so I won't vote.

this one? read the caption: "All other registered users are here, listed together with their contributions to this site." It seems that "lurker" on that page means that those users did not "contribute" yet, that is, they neither submitted any movies nor edited the wiki. edit: damn you and your IRC-bot for always being faster :D

true, not much contribution in here. I can't say I like the new design, although I'm probably just used to the old one. But, since content > design, and the content is good and easiely accessible, I wouldn't worry about it.

creative uses of glitches, I liked it. voting yes.
Do we really need this many GBA Castlevania movies? I can't really even tell the difference… It would put this game on a higher pedestal than Super Mario Bros. 3…
5 GBA Castlevania movies vs. 11 NES Mario movies.. It's ok if you don't like the GBA Castleroids, there are enough games here for everyone's taste. ;) I can tell the differences, and enjoyed each of the movies you listed. Last time I checked, there weren't any pedestrals for games with lots of different game modes either.

kinstone farming and fusing is ok when watching, it can be distributed evenly over the whole run. It's a bitch to play though, you'd have to constantly check if there are any kinstones hidden in monsters or grass nearby. (rescue the princess? hold on, I have to mow the lawn first, need kinstone peaces!) Getting rupees and buying kinstone peaces in the village is another option, if kinstone drops are too rare. Buying things at the bread shop (?) will sometimes yield kinstones, and there's the expensive kinstone-merchant that appears after a certain fusion. (maybe others, don't remember, don't have VGB here) You'll get a good share of money by killing those golden monsters, although some of it is wasted buying the bigger rupee bags. And you can always do this stupid pick-the-right-chest-game for a quick but boring refill of 999 shiny gems. The worst thing in a 100% run is buying those 130 figurines you need for the heart peace. That's not funny not watch and not funny to play, and IMHO reason enough not to touch the 100% category on this game.

because I couldn't get nitsuja's version compiled, and the official release inside gentoo portage doesn't seem to have a GUI. If anyone got a working native linux version, PM me please, I don't want to clutter this thread with my linux problems ;) anyway, I watched it again, here's the promised yes vote.
