Before you start TAS-ing using openMSX please read the following carefully. OpenMSX emulates almost all MSX models for which we have BIOS files, it also supports a load of hardware extensions. A few warnings/reminders: - Please don't use C-BIOS; this is not an official BIOS but maintained by enthusiasts in the MSX scene. New releases are done about once per 8 months[/list] - Try to avoid turbo-r emulation while making a TAS. Turbo-R emulation is almost perfect but in the near future timing changes might be made in the source of openMSX rendering replays useless for newer openMSX versions. - We try to always make OMR files backwards compatible but we cannot guarantee that they'll work in the future. For the whole load of other information please go to: http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/manual/faq.html#tas I have made a quick TAS tutorial to get things started. Link to video How to get into TAS mode. Bring up the console by pushing f10 for Windows/Linux or CMD-L for Mac The following command has to be entered into the console command line interface:
set mode tas
The following keys can be used
[end] = frame advance
[page up] go back in time
[page down] go forward in time (if you have a recording)
You can rebind keys like this: To permanently bind keys use the bind command
bind pageup -repeat "reverse goback 0.25"
For one time bindings use bind_default command
bind_default pageup -repeat "reverse goback 0.25"
the repeat option is optional but highly recommended. OpenMSX supports TCL http://www.tcl.tk/ and TAS tools are written in TCL too. To find the source of the TAS tool scripts go to /openmsx/share/scripts. Here is a good example on what can be done with TCL Link to video OpenMSX TCL tutorial - part 1 Link to video OpenMSX TCL tutorial - part 2 Link to video OpenMSX has a CLI based cheatfinder - see movie for a short tutorial Link to video How to setup openMSX and to show where BIOS file go please see Link to video OpenMSX supports video recording, to record a video in ZMBV install the codec with openMSX. When recording a movie use the command:
record start name_of_video.avi -doublesize

Link to video I've given up making a TAS... it's just too time consuming. I will be posting videos with what I believe is the shortest route (without glitch abuse)

I finished world 1 : Link to video This is not a TAS but just a way to get a feel for this game. You can actually speed jump over the 1st waterfall in the game.... I didn't do that in this run.

Link to video Maybe an idea for a good TAS. Here are some vital memory addresses: - 0xa100 the addresses could be (0=standing still, 1 = walking , 2=running by double tab cursor key in one direction) - 0xa6c1 x-position (location top of head) - 0xa6c2 x-position (location top of head) - 0xa130 invincibility timer when using the cross See ram_watch command on http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/manual/commands.html for more information. the fastest way to get the speed boost while double tapping (example for going right)
frame 1: input right
frame 2: input none
frame 3: input none
frame 4: input none
frame 5: input right
address 0xa100 will jump to 6 then to 2 indicating you're in speed boost mode.

I played these games for the first time when I was around 10. I still remember the excitement from opening up the sealed carts and playing the games for the first time. My all time favorite is still Maze of Galious though. This video sums up the biggest differences very good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1B9_g8uniI

Might I remind you this game is from 1986 on hardware from 1983 that means it's still made in the 8bit era, this was as good as MSX games where at that time.... as a matter of fact Penguin Adventure was one of the more ground breaking games at that time with great graphics and good music. Try to play some MSX if you have the chance.

the amount of penguins are based on the last digit of your time when you kill the dragon... so it's 2 4 6 or 8 penguins. It only checks for even. One heart adds 50 seconds btw

Heisanevilgenius I agree again with your findings, there is a bit of room for improvement. - less fish @ the slot machine - using green hearts more efficient to get closer, I tried however make it as efficient as possible. - making sure you don't get dancing penguins after killing the dragon I hope someone else will pick up the challenge and make a better TAS :) I didn't even look for exploits or glitches (are there any?)

Heisanevilgenius thanks for the great feedback; I agree with all of it. but for the sake of having this game as a TAS I don't want to withdraw it.... I'll leave the judgement up to people who vote. It's my first attempt at a TAS and I probably should have done a better job dodging stuff and making it more challenging. The only needed items are the running shoes and the gun (and those maps) For some reason there is lag when you leave the shop... I only saw it in the replay how long it took and I might have made a mistake there.

Depends on how long the final movie would be, I think. Seeing as it is basically an autoscroller, it can get boring, but if you continue to warp... maybe? If it ended up 4-6 minutes, I could see people enjoying it.
I think it'll be closer to 14 minutes to be honest

Still going to finish it just for my own curiosity, I know there are only a few factors in the game that can be manipulated and that makes it a bit of a challenge.

I'm working on a TAS and I was wondering how I could make this more entertaining or if it's even worth making a TAS on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycluOvrvnJc Link to video New version (up to stage 21)

I could have warned against using c-bios a bit better. 1) when you are in a happy mood with Wit you can double jump 2) when you are in a happy mood with Cles you can walk in mid air for a short period of time. Please try the run again, I really like the run as you have it now.

I have played the game on the day it was released, anyone who thinks they can do a better job prove Nitrogeneis wrong. This game would normally be close to impossible to finish under 5 minutes. The 'sprite in this game is a software sprite which makes it extremely limited in the interaction and you always will struggle with limitations. The platform this was made on in from 1983 and these game was only 'recently' released and is a jewel of technical achievements if you know the MSX1 platform. I vote YES

Nicely done, certainly this makes a mockery of the 'Red Falcon' army. I have played this games for several decades already and I never even knew I could do some of these things you are demonstrating here.
