It’s a known glitch, and there even is a name for character having this glitch — “atomic” Sonic (Knuckles in this case)

Yeah, in all honesty, TheYogWog’s run also needs an update — we should be perfectionists. And my personal wish about it is to preserve a lot of entertaining moves made there.

There are many possible improvements mentioned in the information in this presentation. Was not it better to try them before presenting? You may have optimized a bit.
“Try” would mean redoing the whole run from scratch. So, we decided that it’s better to mark the possible improvements than to pretend that the run is “perfect”. The least, in fact, is absolutely impossible for ring attacks. The descriptions of the possible improvements seem to be shortened — for example, the last one originally sounded like this:

Because it’s really a ring attack and not a “perfect bonus” run. The main difference is that this run also collects monitor rings, which are not needed to get that bonus. The main reason making Knuckles look slower in this run than in S3&K is inability to spindash during 15 frames after landing from gliding state; it can sometimes be avoided by landing on the same frame when you start gliding, but braking from the speed of 1024 sp/f is still slower than charging the spindash immediately in S3&K.

ARZ2 too, there is a ring inside a column, for which there is no known way to collect it as Knuckles alone.

I am deeply impressed by how well it’s done. Usually when I see a Sonic submission, I post info on possible improvements (example, another one, one more), but this particular run is done at an exceptionally high level, absolutely beyond my abilities and understanding. I know only 2 people whose runs cause similar feelings when watching them frame by frame — they are Aglar and Tee-N-Tee. This run is just like it’s done by one of them.

If you really decide to go back and improve your run, consider redoing braking on objects — you still do it imperfectly, though way better than before. Compare your typical inputs with mine Yours [A][][<][<][v][v][vA] (7 frames) Mine [B][<][<][<>][<v][vA] (6 frames) I get your idea, you bring your speed to 129, then it becomes 1 and after 1 frame of waiting it becomes 0 and finally you can spindash. However, it is faster to press [<] twice to make speed 127, then pressing [<>] sets it to 128, and 128 is the «good» value which is already very well familiar to you and you know what to do with it. It saves 1 frame and also you end up a few subpixels further than in your case, as a micro or even nano bonus.

Out of curiuosity, could looking up at the capsule be faster than what’s done in the current published run for Sonic+Tails? I see it like this: Tails breaks the capsule as soon as possible, Sonic lands onto it’s button 1-2 frames later, as soon as there is enough space for standing, and starts looking up immediately. Will it be faster or not? marzojr, feeuzz, Zurggriff, can anyone measure it? I have to admit that I’m not good enough with multitrack recording.

That’s a known issue with the camera hack. As far as I know, marzojr tried to fix it, but his ideas about the source of the issue were wrong. As the original creators of the camera hack (nitsuja and upthorn) left, there is nobody who knows exactly how it works, so we use it with this issue. The good side is: in fact, it just freezes for some time, it does not really crash. It emulates some frames way longer than supposed, but still with success. You can wait a little, for me it usually takes about 5-10 seconds to process such a frame.

Such objects usually can be manipulated by wasting some non in-game time between the acts, you can see good examples in my published Amy@S3K TAS (Flying Battery, Sandopolis and Lava Reef were pure pain to manage). After finishing act 1, waste the needed interval to delay the “level clear” screen trigger. The problem is that you’ll probably need to redo the second act, so you need to estimate the amount of frames to be wasted pretty much correctly. Prepare for the worst, friend — the mentioned zones are a lot worse than Hydrocity in terms of number of moving objects that will block your way. Good that some of them, like Sandopolis 1, can be skipped by using a level-wrap, unlike with Amy. Or you are going to make your run underflowless? By the way, you missed one small shortcut, instead of zipping left after stair clip (HCZ2), you could drop down directly, however, it is not enough to save an extra in-game seconds, but well, at least it makes the entire run shorter. An example. (upd) damn, I also forgot a thing — gliding at the last dropping down. Saves some more frames, and now it’s only 8-9 frames to a better time. I will try to do it. Marble Garden zone is even worse in terms of deadly hard tricks and places where something looks possible, but you just cannot perform it. At least when you play as Amy :(
