Do you understand that what you are doing is akin to vandalism? You don't have any actual objections to this submission in particular, but instead you are abusing the voting process of this submission to make a generic "protest" against a trend you don't like. You are boycotting this submission in particular, without any fault of the author of the run, because of dogmatic reasons that have nothing to do with it. What did the author of this run do to deserve such boycotting? If you want to express your opinion, why don't you write an article on a group which is more on-topic for that subject matter?
RingRush was joking. I am surprised that you didn't notice it...

I enjoyed this short movie, and suggest this screenshot: Edit: I have fixed the link to the screenshot, which was broken because I moved it to a different album.

I half feel that there should be additional encodes with the camera hack centered on Sonic and Tails, as well as the one with the HUD, just so people can see a little bit better what is going on.
That would be great.

So there is a glitch that could save HOURS on this TAS. How does avoiding increase the entertainment value?
I answered it here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=248633&highlight=#248633 It takes away a lot of stuff from the game. It's like if there's a glitch that saves hours of time in Ocarina of Time... it skips a lot of the game, so there's room for a "all quests/dungeons" TAS.
That isn't a good comparison. That run lasts less than three hours, while your run's length is double that. The length of your movie makes hard keeping it entertaining, which isn't a problem with the aforementioned TAS.

I mostly want to do this because it always throws me off when I'm looking at the submission text for a game that's had previous obsoleted runs with substantial information on glitches but the most recent run doesn't reference how they work.
I don't like that either and that is an interesting solution. I am pretty sure that most users feel the same way about that.

How much slower was the one-pass Mecha Sonic? If the loss wasn't significant (less than 5 seconds, I'd say), I think it'd be worth including as a speed/entertainment tradeoff.
In my opinion, a pure speedrun would be better in this particular case.

Randil, could you average the frames of this movie using your script?

Looking briefly at the Sonic CD run... I could see myself at least animating the rings and other simple animations off-screen. Not sure if I'd go as far as doing enemies too. I won't know until I start putting it together I guess, but thanks for pointing this one out to me!
Really? :O I look forward to see it. Thank you for your awesome atlases, I love the concept and your work.

With these two improvements, were I to paste the remainder of the previous run (and it synched), I would finish at 29:59.70 -- 18 frames under 30:00.00! Sub-30 min at last!
Congratulations! Thank you for playing! :D

With all due respect to mike89, the (rejected) Sonic 1 No Rings TAS begs to differ...
I don't think so. 70% of the people that voted liked it. People complained about its lack of optimization and arbitrary goals (which were reworded some time after it was submitted to make more sense). I don't think that comparing Mike's movie with a possible TAS of Sonic 2 XL is appropriate, because the main goal of the latter would be clear and simple (finish the game as fast as possible) and optimization shouldn't be a problem if an awesome TASer like you or FuzZerd undertakes that TASk. Also, in that movie of Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog, Mike couldn't get a single ring because of the main goal of the run, which resulted in short parts of the run being boring. However, a player wouldn't have such an important restriction when speedrunning Sonic 2 XL. I am not trying to convince you to TAS that great hack, because you don't seem to like the idea. But I was afraid that your wrong reasoning could discourage other players, so the purpose of my post is to defend my suggestion. :P I think that finding the optimal route for each act would be fun and quite challenging. I wish I had the motivation and knowledge necessary to do it myself. -_-

I think that a TAS of Sonic 2 where you take optimal routes to collect as few rings as possible while being fast could be interesting to watch. I had to try. :P FuzZerd might be interested in TASing this hack...

The hack is just a good excuse to TAS Sonic 2 from a new perspective, using different routes and strategies that those used in the TAS by nitsuja. Route planning for this TAS should be fun and interesting. Try TASing the first zone to prove me wrong. :P

Do you really think so? The TAS would involve avoiding rings and not getting fat.
That would be interesting to see. I usually frown upon TASes of Sonic hacks, but this would be an exception. Marzo, if you TASed this hack, I am sure that the run would be awesome.

I do plan on trying other systems like SNES, but wanted to get the background images as well. The parallax scrolling makes it a bit more difficult as you could tell. Sonic 3 would be really cool to try I think.
As far as I know, there aren't decent maps of the zones of Sonic 3. Besides that, I think that an atlas using this TAS of Sonic CD would be way more interesting to watch. You could use the great maps made by TerraEsperZ to make an atlas of Palmtree Panic (zone 1, zone 2 and zone 3). Animating rings and enemies before Sonic reaches them would be awesome. I guess that you could do that with the method mentioned here. However, I think that that would take way too much time and effort to be feasible.

That works perfectly then in my opinion. Does snes9x allow different layers to be turned off like FCEUX? Or Gens as well? If so then that could solve the problem as you just demonstrated.
Gens has an option to do that. :D
