Using the shell, this might work? I think this one seems most reasonable. Also, this could work in 5-3 if it works in 1-3. I'm thinking the first part could work out well to get into the ground. The second part... maybe you could use a bullet bill in order to bounce up slightly and enter the second wall across the one block gap. This probably isn't possible, but I'd like to see it done. :D Also, if this were possible, using a shell would make more sense. There are a few other things that could work to improve the smb runs. I think eventually I'll end up with a lot more images.

Woah, that was very sweet, I read the video description and it said there was a cheep-cheep trick, but I didn't think it would be a trick like that. Lookig forward to the warpless run with this trick. Yes vote for sure btw
Just wanted to note that in the warpless this should be possible in both 2-3 and 7-3 = 168 frame improvement.

I didn't do this, my brother did. Anyways, he was playing Super Mario Bros. 3, he stepped onto a falling platform. When he jumped off it, the platform turned green, and stayed that way. He tried jumping onto it again, but it still remained green. :P
That game has an odd way of having floating green blocks randomly. sprite overload I'm guessing.

Happylee, with this improvement, I expect that there are actually a lot more improvements... Maybe not in this particular TAS, but in a lot of others. ;) I tried this before and couldn't manage too. :( EDIT: Also, congrats on such a cool improvement! :D

Oh, I think I'm mistaken. Yeah, I guess it's not possible to do any of the things I thought might be faster. I was doing L+R on the cauldron, not thinking about the health factors. Looks pretty good! I'm going to see if I can spot any improvements on this though.

On the huge pot in the last level, it's not faster to do the L+R trick? Also, I'm surprised those plants can't be avoided by turning around to get hit. It does seem impossible :/ EDIT: Oh, you said it wasn't possible. Well, I mean it IS possible, just slower I'm imagining.

There was this time I was playing SuperC once and in the middle of stage 3, the end music started playing. The game then proceeded to force me to run off a cliff (I had no control, was as if the game thought I beat the level)... and then the game brought me to the next level. I was hoping that would be in the TAS when I first watched it. I wonder if it was something that really couldn't be duplicated though.

Try this... run off the first cliff you encounter in level 1-1, most likely Mario's foot will snag the wall, at the frame, press the A button and Mario will jump off the wall.

Well, I have the NES plain Super Mario Bros in hand now, and the Arduino is able to emulate an NES controller just fine. Now comes the hard part...
Hmm, this is an odd experiment. I'm interested in how this turns out.

New improvements, everyone! I will improve this with klmz together. The new movie will be coming soon!
Really!? I'm surprised and looking forward to it! :) EDIT: I'm guessing that there was slightly better wall entering, but the acceleration from klmz in the wall was better.

EDIT: Well anyhow, I think there were two improvements for the 1 frame gain?

This was a very simple TAS to begin with (Only 5 levels). A 1 frame improvement actually IS something here. I'm curious whether you could beat the last level any faster. Seems like it could be possible. EDIT: I have a few ideas to possibly improve these smb TASes. I'll be experimenting...

How about jumping through the wall in 8-4 in order to get down that pipe faster (the part right after the water section in 8-4). The way you do it is very fast, so I doubt that would work either, however I think it's worth testing. I tried to do it and failed. I'm not very good at TASing.

Looking over the run one more time, I wonder if you could use the shell for a flagpole glitch at the end of level 8-3. The shells bounce Mario differently, so I kinda doubt it'd work.

I've seen this movie many times. Perhaps it's possible to perform a vine-glitch in this game as it would be similar to SMB1? No matter what, entertainment is mainly the reason I vote Yes.
The vines behave oddly sometimes. Sometimes getting the vine to warp you rightwards is actually impossible, and when it is possible, the flagpole vine glitch won't work just because of the level setup. You do these glitches, hit the flagpole and then die. I always wondered if there was some glitch you could do while behind the flagpole. I'm thinking that something else could be possible as I doubt anyone has really looked into jumping over a flagpole and hitting the flagpole from the right side. Just a thought.

Um... First off... Shouldn't the three punch-out topics be merged? http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=537 http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1339 http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1170 Secondly, this is my real question, have either of you guys seen or heard about this before? (Thanks to Adon who told me about it): In an interview (found here: http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/punchout/vol1_page4.jsp) one of the designers tell about an Easter egg when fighting Bald Bull. When Bald Bull is doing his super-attack, the camera man in the bottom right corner of the ring side makes a flash with his camera when you should hit the punch button to make Bald Bull get knocked out. If you want to check it out, the small flash appears between 1:49 and 1:50 into this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_iVHVGqMIU According to the designer it was a hidden thing for 22 years. :) Just thought that I should share it with you guys. Wonder how many secrets like this there are in old games out there? Maybe we should start a topic about that separately? Cheers!
That;s the kind of thing I always think are just coincidences. I notice things like that from time to time (not that specifically), but that's how I do well with some games. Using the background of the game has always been a big key in my speedrunning ;) That and the music... 8)

I'll try to answer the questions people have: It doesn't save time for 8-3 because if you do the glitch the timer ends on a 3 and you get 3 fireworks. The screen scrolling in 2-1 and 3-1 is done so that he can hit the turtles earlier as he is farther right on the screen, sets things up that would normally be impossible. The vine glitch is used for distance in level 6-2 to hit the turtle correctly at the end. The screen scrolling used in the walkathon is much slower than just turning around while running. Basically it was only used to avoid the pirhana which is only a problem at walking speed in 8-4.

WOWWWWWW.... Happylee, you are one creative guy (to say the least)... I thought of some of the options you did, but I couldn't make ANY of them work. You even managed to use a shell to do the bullet bill glitch (in 3-1) which me and klmz had determined to be impossible! So I'm very happy you were able to do the shell-flagpole glitch when we couldn't. I'm glad it's possible. Happylee, congrats! I'm going to see if I can find any other improvements. This run should get a star ;)

Loved it. With the fact that I've speedrun this on console, it's impressive to see how much faster my best track time compares with the TAS. Track 0: Me - 43.69 TAS - 36.19 Quite ridiculous times indeed. Yes vote of course. :D
