My console 4-2 speedrun method is coinless. I don't use the vine. So this can definitely be improved, but this is a good effort. There are other/faster ways to do 4-2 coinless too, but whatever, this was an interesting run. I did this challenge on console once (I think in 2006) and I ended with 1 coin. I just couldn't NOT get a coin in level 8-1. *shakes fist* Voting meh. Also, what's interesting is that the method used in 4-2 is the EXACT method I used when I did this on console.

At 0:48 in the above video, would it have saved a frame or two to start walking the moment the screen would progress instead of walking until the screen progressed? ^ that's the only thing I'm curious of. Anyway, yes vote. I enjoyed that quite a bit.

yes, that could work I guess. Sitting through the ending after beating it once takes a little while though. I guess it wouldn't be much of an issue, though maybe a reset after beating it would save time (if it could be counted like that). If I do this, I'm not sure whether worlds A-D would be played or not, they probably would with a reset after beating world 9.

World 9 would be done. Unfortuntately, Worlds A-D probably would not be seen. I'm still not sure if I want to do this project, but if I do, I would like the SMB2J Warpless run to replace this movie: http://tasvideos.org/1134M.html I'd want to do the run on FDS.

Chess is just not entertaining. I'd be more likely to vote yes if the moves for victory didn't actually make sense.

That's clever. But I don't think it can save time even it could work.
Yea, even if it was faster than collecting power-ups, it would slow down level 8-4 quite some time. :/ I wish there were some way to do this. I think I might do a TAS of SMB2J Warpless.

well, not quite. I think mugg means this would be a faster method for it... however, I don't think it can work. The situation in 4-2 is slightly different (different kind of block), also it's done on the ground and not from a walljump. I've asked Happylee in the past about this and I think you can only enter a wall if you are moving upwards toward it first.

I have to bring something to your attention in 1-1. It's possible to save a frame on 1-1 via lag reduction, I believe andymac found it. Lag doesn't effect the RNG so it is an improvement which can be implemented in World 1.
very nice :) Also, this TAS should aim to beat the smw TAS time. idk if anyone beside myself has noticed this, but the smb3 and smw TASes are always extremely close in time.

Nitrogenesis, what parts? The game doesn't give you much room to pass enemies quickly. The enemies I killed needed to be killed because they take away so much health.
Andrewg, one part that looks a little suspicious is the room in the Air Ducts where you zip upwards. After that zip, you walk to the door, and afterwards you change to the spring shoes and the towel. Given that you said spring shoes save a frame when you bounce, shouldn't you have changed to the spring shoes and towel shortly after the zip and bounced all the way to the door? Also, why do you equip the embalming fluid for the Crawl Space area when you need to switch back to the towel later anyway?
I thought this myself when we were making this section for Rick's old TAS. If you equip the spring shoes after zipping upwards, when you enter the door you are too tall to progress, this is why I change to the spring shoes after going through the door. After gaining the embalming fluid notice that it automatically equips without me pausing to switch it. Very nice observations! Unfortunately, both are unavoidable situations.

After a little more thought/discussion: I think this run should be accepted and have a link on the same page as the SMB ntsc TAS. Can this be done? Does everyone agree with this suggestion? And for other smb PAL runs which will (likely) be submitted shortly the same thing? EDIT: and if it isn't published I think it should be linked from the smb page like mugg suggested.

I don't think there should be two either. But I think replacing it would be a bad idea. Sure it may be a fraction faster for various reason to use the E version. But the any%,. -3 world FDS, warpless, and possibly all the lost levels TASes will be reduced to using the same glitch in every level, decreasing the entertainment value of each by a huge amount for very few seconds gained using the E version. TASvideos is usually just "fastest time wins" but when the time gained is very minimal, with very little difference, I don't see why far less entertaining runs should replace ones that have been optimized to near perfection and add a great deal of creativity/entertainment to the site. I wouldn't be surprised if the moonwalk glitch in the walkathon didn't work in PAL, but would have a faster result due to the differences. I'm not a fan of very small time improvements replacing cool glitches.

Nah, I think they would have said "Possibly, but who wants an obsoletion over a dumb version difference like that?"
This ^ I was pretty sure PAL would save time for the past 2-3 years, but I wasn't sure if tasvideos accepted PAL and thought other smb TASers knew this but didn't care (like myself) because the game is different from it's original version. and I figure the large majority of TASers would rather see the original version opposed to the E version.

unfortunately, the game won't end until you: kill the boss, remove the barrier on the girl's prison, and then have the character sprite touch the girl's. :o

They are different games, or, more reasonably, this is a kludgy hack of the U version to make it work on different technology than it was developed for.
I agree with this. This version of the game came out nearly 2 years after the Japanese original release and was modified to literally behave LIKE the ntsc version (hence how a PAL run can be beating an ntsc run). The run is faster because: 1. Mario accelerates quicker, 2. the "instant time starting-flagpole" glitch can be used everywhere. I don't think this run should be published, but I would like to see a link to it on the current ntsc publication. And not the other way around. In a sense, SMB was remade specifically to work for Europe in order to behave as close as possible to the ntsc version. It's quite literally a modified game. They didn't really come out at the same exact time, but years apart. Also , it's too late now I guess... but I'd change my "meh" to "no"

A Meh from me. Technical quality's good enough, but the game continues to make no sense, and not in a particularly good way. I'm not sure that even a TAS can improve this game to the quality where it's particularly watchable.
So what if the game doesn't make sense?

I am conflicted. I will not vote. EDIT: I'm voting meh because I think it's suboptimal. I don't know whetherr this should replace ntsc. Also, I feel it's somewhat less entertaining than the ntsc version.

I don't know how I got it by my file is Ghoul School (U).nes and does not display the brick background. EDIT: I think I might have a way to save time in this TAS. I was thinking these weight-lifting eyeballs were weaker. They are way too strong...

Rick, I was wondering, would you possibly want to work on another improvement with me? I feel like there could be some room for improvements still. I don't see more than a few frames at best though. Maybe we could find a new trick or something, that would be cool. I'd really like to see this TAS go under 4 minutes. Also, I'm really sorry if you wanted to help me out. I hadn't intended to submit anything a year ago, but I have had this movie file for a long time now (probably since November) and figured I would submit it finally.
