It's also a good game for keeping your roommate up all night. *grumble grumble*

Sorry, but I'm just not a big fan of "One mistake and you're dead". I tend to make more mistakes than most people due to being naturally clumsy, so daredevil runs are particularly annoying to me. Putting someone in the exact same situation and tweaking their life or putting on a time limit may be challenging, but it's not fun or interesting at all. With the exception of the non-timed purple coin challenges and faster enemies, I was very disappointed with the challenges in Super Mario Galaxy.

#3. Thou shalt admit when enough is enough. I'm shocked that he made no mention of the biggest offender to this statement of all time: Megaman. Also, he should lay off the forced humor a little. And apparently this guy has some personal vendetta against RE4. It's mentioned multiple times in multiple sections. Having to conserve your ammo is a good thing in my opinion. It forces you to be resourceful instead of just using the shotgun for everything. That would be boring as hell. I agree that challenge should not be artificial, but in a different sense. Here's my biggest pet peeve in videogames in general: when a game uses the lazy way to increase difficulty. Increasing a boss's life, decreasing your health, decreasing the damage your weapon does, including a time limit (although that's more personal taste...I personally hate racing against the clock), etc. This doesn't make the game harder per-se, just more drawn out and quite uninspired to be honest. Super Mario Galaxy was a staunch offender of this. Daredevil runs, anyone? If you want an example of a game that did it perfectly, look at Streets of Rage 2. First of all, it had a whopping 6 difficulties, and each one was significantly different (and more difficult) than the other. Enemy AI was changed for each difficulty (they were faster, smarter, and more aggressive), there were more enemies with more health, and most importantly, they didn't change the amount of damage enemies deal. This means that even in the highest difficulty (Mania), you can't get cheap-shotted in two hits like in a lot of other beat-em-ups which are guilty of this. It doesn't leave you saying "Well, this guy is still dumb as a brick, and he would be easy if he didn't deal 5 times as much damage as before!" Now let's look at an example of the lazy way: House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return. Wide array of difficulties, but hardly any difference between them at all. All that really stands out to me is that enemies and bosses have more health. No AI changes to be found anywhere...not even faster enemies. Come on...wouldn't it be awesome if for Very Hard, Magician was a fast, tough SOB who mixed his attack patterns so you never knew what was coming? Also, another difficulty pet peeve of mine is how the "easy" difficulty isn't easy, or the "hard" difficulty isn't hard. Going back to Streets of Rage 2, Easy was in fact easy, Hard was actually challenging, and Mania was ready to kick you in the balls rapid-fire. Going back to HOTD 2 & 3, Easy is NOT easy. It's the same absurdly hard difficulty for HOTD 2 and 3 that you're used to.

If anybody asks me what I want to be when I get old I usual say "computer programmer" despite the fact that my experience is limited to some sloppy ZZT-OOP and my school doesn't offer any programming classes afaict (despite having the largest student population in the state). Don't feel bad. My high school had no programming courses at all, and the only computer class they had that wasn't teaching Office to computer-illiterates was a basic hardware class.

I work for the Geek Squad. It's service + retail. It's probably the worst job ever, but at least the pay is decent. Heh, I've seen their commercials on TV. Only 1 year left before I get a Bachelor's in computer science...ugh. I really don't want to go into the job world yet if I can help it. I don't even know what profession I would want to go into yet. I'm considering going for a Master's after this, although that'll take a freaking miracle because I'm really not a smart person at all.

Also, it bugs me that half the posts in this thread have "in my opinion" or, even worse, "IMO" in them. You're the one typing it, it's painfully obvious it's your opinion. "IMO" in particular baffles me, it's intended to save time by being an acronym when it could simply be left out entirely. It's probably done out of habit. The internet is full of dumbasses, and you have to spell out to these prepubescent opinionated fucks that you're not stating a fact but an opinion.

If I want maximum entertainment, that's what TASes are for. With speedruns, speed and skill provide for the entertainment. I'd imagine that after the 150th attempt of the same segment, the runner doesn't feel like infinite walljumping during the scripted wait sequences anymore, and I don't blame him/her. Well, you can go and fuck yourself. Damn, that one's going to hurt in the morning.

FPS - I'm really not very good at FPS's to be honest. The only one I have the illusion of an advantage in is UT 2004, because I have the movement system down to a science (mostly by playing trials maps...although I'm no good at those either). That doesn't make up for shitty aim, though. Beat-em-up - Streets of Rage 2. On a good day I can beat Hardest on default settings without losing a continue as Max. I know that's not really impressive, but whatever. Platformer - I typically suck at most platformers (the most embarassing case recently being Super Mario Galaxy, the game everyone says is too easy). RPG - Almost all RPGs are fundamentally easy to most people, so there's no real point in saying which one I'm best at. Fighting - I suck at fighting games, period. Shoot-em-up - Same as above. RTS - Same as above. General strategy/puzzle games - Same as above. Now that I think of it, I can't think of a single game that I'm exceptionally good at.

However, you've got issues if you are letting internet trolls get to you, legitimate or not. Yeah, I know. This point has been brought to my attention countless times on countless forums. It's because I have no social life at all (sad, I know) and I'm hopelessly addicted to computers, ok? I'm sure you'll find that hilarious, but I don't really care.

Key word: probably. By that statement I was referring more to the people who play the mean-spirited practical jokes and use April Fool's as an excuse to be an asshole.

But... if you knew that, why'd you need more than five minutes to tell the guy his argument was insubstantial? I didn't know he would take the debate so far that his philosophy would nullify his own statements, and in the previous times that I've debated this subject, it didn't go nearly this far. This wasn't 5 minutes, this was upwards of 3 hours. The reason I didn't catch on is because he seemed geniuinely serious and not trollish about the argument until the end.

Do you take people slipping a whoopee cushion under your chair very seriously? If only it was a simple whoopee cushion, everything would be fine. But usually I end up being permanently backstabbed by my "friends" on April Fool's Day.

Note that this is one big rant, so if you don't like whining and bitching, don't bother reading or replying. April Fool's Day is easily my least favorite holiday now (it used to be #2 after Valentine's Day). Every year I dread this day coming, and every year there's always some BS that I have to deal with, and it's not just the stale sarcastic jokes that were never funny to begin with, either. This year it was a clever, but very assholish troll who lured me into a long-winded debate over the solidarity and accuracy of human concepts (which if you've ever debated it you'll know it's a self-corroding argument as time goes on). He basically said that we can never be sure of anything, which basically boiled down to him playing devil's advocate about everything I threw at him, no matter what it was. The argument ended by my conclusion that everything he said was meaningless by his logic (and he knew it, too...that's why he started it) and he was thus willingly wasting my time as a prank. It may not sound like a big deal when I say it now, but believe me it was infuriating at the time. Anyone who thinks practical jokes are funny is a childish moron who probably spent his grade school days bullying others. Fuck April Fool's Day, seriously. Oh, and before someone tells me to lighten up, this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

When I fought alexander my whole party was faster than him. I used Hilbert, Zawu, Ethan and Matilda. Each member had a special role. Hilbert was the tank. His spellcards all gave him +Vit and used the King's Armor and Party Hat. All he did was defending/stancing and casted Invincibility occasionally blocking lionheart completely. If lionheart was not blocked he still survived the first attack but not the second so I only had to revive one character. Zawu was the fastest member. She was the reviver and healer. She had the spellcards: Revive, Full heal, Enlight and chi. She placed Enlight on the party and just healed / revived when it was useful. Ethan used Defensive buffs and placed regen on the party. Matilda was the damage dealer. Just buffed her str and used normal attacks. It took a while to beat him but this strategy was safe. I was not in trouble once while fighting him. My party was around lvl 90 when I did it. Thanks for this strategy, I had no clue that vitality buffs could add up like that and really make a difference. One time he used Lionheart and Hilbert actually survived it, which I thought was impossible. I pretty much used the strategy you used, except with Randolph in the place of Ethan, and I used him to Nuke/Gamma Alexander when he had the chance. I barely managed to beat him after what seemed like an eternity, despite getting unlucky and never blocking Lionheart with Invincibility (ironically enough, his attacks usually missed when Invincibility was on). Thankfully I only had to use a few Serpent Eyes, a few Healing Orbs, and the Sacred Orb I stole from him. Seeing the extra challenge, which has *more spoilers* 5 times Alexander's HP AND revivable helpers...absolutely insane. I second the request of a video of someone taking this boss down.

There is only one boss battle that I found harder than the Omega Team. There are 6 whirlwind thingies that can revive and heal each other. That fight took me more tries than Alexander. Wow, that's strange...I beat them on my first try, although it did take an eternity for their MP to run out. I wish I had known what I was up against, I could've saved a few precious items and sped up the process with Mindblow. That battle does rely on some luck though, as they technically could decide to all rape one character with Gaia's Roots, which will kill him/her even with halved damage. I did manage to get past the Omega team battle (although barely...it actually got harder after I had killed Flynn because my team didn't have that much more left in them). On to the next colossal jackass: Tiamat. All I have to say is thank god she takes 2500 damage from Holy.

Most games that let you choose character names are pretty long, so a few seconds of improvement from shorter names in dialog is fairly pointless in my opinion.

Thanks for posting this, it's a great RPG with an immersive story that makes me want to play to find out what happens. I also like the characters, especially Matilda. It has a lot of challenge, perhaps a little too much to be honest (and I haven't even finished the game yet). *spoilers ahead* Some of the later bosses are complete bastards. From the first encounter with Flynn and onward, the game starts rapidly kicking you in the balls and doesn't let up. Even the enemies often deal half your HP in damage with a normal attack. The fight with the fire dragon is just mean, almost ensuring your doom unless you happened to have unequipped the Fire Amulet and Primal Ward (?) from your other party members before going into the prison. The second battle with Castor was even worse, and one of my most frustrating main storyline boss encounters since the demon wall in FF IV. What's worse is if you didn't stock up on softs (like me) or Talismans you're pretty much screwed since he loves petrifying people. You need to kill him quickly, which isn't going to happen since he has 15000 HP. After a dozen or so tries I finally BARELY beat him, and I had to pull out all the stops, including several Rages, Quad Strikes, almost all my offensive items (the good ones, too...like Holy/Unholy Water), and I even had to Raid him for his Meteor Shell so I could use it on him. The next battle (Castor's Omega team...basically this game's version of the Turks) isn't looking any prettier either.

I have a feeling that I won't be working on the run for a while, so I'll just post the current progress (1/2 through Stage 5 Scene 2) and the savestate. The only comment I have is that AI manipulation is a whore, and forced me to slam the Big Ben even though it didn't kill anybody. This was so that the Donovans at the right hand edge of the screen would show themselves. 3 reasons why this will be postponed: 1. The next set of enemies is already a pain in the ass, and I haven't even started. 2. Spring break is almost over, and it looks like my coursework for the next few weeks is going to be pure hell. 3. A bunch of assholes at a forum that I won't disclose pretty much ruined the rest of my break. I know I'm a loser for taking the internet seriously, but I don't care. I'm already slipping into the delay crap that has plagued this run's existence, but I'll try not to let it get out of hand again.

That's why I chose SOR3, because it's much harder. BK3 has no significant gameplay differences that would be noticed in a TAS other than the inclusion of Ash in Stage 1.

Stage 5 Scene 1 is complete. This last bit looks stylistically ugly and shows just how much of a pain in the ass it is to manipulate the karate guys. One of them just sat there behind Zan and tried to kick him, and when I tried using Zan's back attack to knock him out of it, the ones in front blocked, which is bad because they won't stop blocking until they lower their guard. It turned out fine in the end though, as Fabio (the purple one with over 5 full lifebars of health) was the last to go down. I didn't roll through the wall or anything like that because the transition to the next scene won't happen until both characters are at a certain x-coordinate (and above a certain y-coordinate as well). Rolling through the wall causes them to slowly walk towards the trigger point.

Does Blaze's flying attack do less damage than Axel's Nope, they do the same amount of damage. Edit: I'll watch this when I go home for spring break...my campus doesn't like torrents.

I think nearly all of us are here both because we like games, and have a natural hackerish interest in learning how things work. Guess I'm the exception to the rule. I'm only learning programming because I'm a computer science major and I need to do something for a living when I get out of college. Lazy and unmotivated, I know. Seeing all my other fellow CS majors who are genuinely interested in programming and write programs for fun makes me feel a little guilty, but I guess that's just the way things go.

Does it work with Zan alone? Surprisingly, it does, but when I try the exact same thing in the 2-player run (modified at the 2nd door), it doesn't work.
