So anyway I went and did a bunch of frame by frame testing and heres what I have found out so far.... -Before I start, since all visuals, and also motion values, update every 3 frames I will refer to 3 frame groups as triads(for lack of a better term) Sidehopping is MUCH faster than backwalking as a child, no surprise there, but the more interesting bit was sidehopping, -Regardless of terrain, Link always goes through set number of triads in which the speed remains constantly 12.75, and in the last triad before link touches ground, his speed slows to 11.25. -To maintain maximum speed you must press A anywhere in the last triad before the speed slows to 11.25(frames 16,17,18 on flat ground). That rule applies to all terrain. -Therefore the speed does not vary except during the triad before link touches ground(when link does touch ground the value changes back to 12.75). So this makes uphill sidehopping slowest because link touches the ground constantly, making link revert to 11.25 more often, followed by flat surfaces because he touches the ground less, followed by downhill because he touches the ground the least. Ill post the data and a small demonstration .m64 that I made if anyone wants to see it, and I am going to see the differences in adult backwalk/sidehop later so we can hopefully finally close this debate

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there not one single aspect that makes exploiting a game possible. The idea is to master every element that would make you faster and they're all equally important.
You are wrong, programming errors are what makes the game exploitable :) [/literalness] All arguments aside there really should be a place for OoT speed values, major factor or not. If im not mistaken TASing is about the pursuit of perfection and this would make any run that much closer to being perfect

I didnt realize there was acceleration delay because when I tested it I used project64 which doesnt have frame advance. I went and found the address on mupen and used frame advance to check and for backwalking it takes child link ~23 frames after holding back, to accelerate to full backwalking speed while link goes from 0 to full speed ~6 frames when sidehopping, I will try and be more through and post the results later, but until then if any1 is interested, This is the program I used, plus I added the address for motion to it. All you do is run mupen, click on the open process button in it and select mupen. Then find the little folder icon, click it and select Mupen Motion Values.cht

That might be it, I really dont know the cause, but I am hoping that this emulator will fix the problem

In that case you'll greeted by backwalking during the adult segment.
Actually the only cases where it's faster to backwalk will be long enough of a stretch to use a superslide so there will still be minimal backwalking
I dont know if thats what you mean, but I did some research on speed values a while back and balkwalking as an adult is actually faster than sidehopping. I posted the research on SDA ill see if I can find it and post it here Supersliding is always 27 and undeniably the fastest method of travel Constantly Backflipping is always 9 regardless of boots or age Sidehopping is always 12.75 regardless of boots or age Child: -Sidehopping --> Fastest non-superslide method -Backwalking and rolling is 12.375 -Normal walking is 8.25 -Diagonal walking is 7.42 Adult: Normal Boots: -Backwalking and rolling =13.5---->Fastest non-superslide method -Normal walking = 9 -Diagonal walking = 8.1 Iron Boots: -Backwalking and rolling = 6.75 -Normal walking = 4.5 -Diagonal walking = 1.8 (slowest method of travel) Hover Boots: -All the max values for hover boots are the same as if you were a child, plus the acceleration delay, so wearing these and walking for long distances should be avoided

Is there a chance that the recording branch will allow us to use audio compression? In the current mupen when you record avi, it asks you which video compression you want to use, however it saves the audio as uncompressed PCM format. This I believe leads to sound desyncs when you compress the avi a second time.

Bloobiebla's Child Route Avi Here is the MegaUpload Link for those of you who want a much more high quality video than the mediafire one. 45min, 370mb @bkdj The sound doesnt desync very noticeably in this video for some reason, I think that it could be that the lower the filesize the worse that problem gets. I still dont know any way to remedy the situation unfortunately other than to not compress the file after the intial recording, in which case the avi would be huge

Bloobiebla's Child Route AVI Uploaded onto mediafire 45min, 95 MB This movie is 320x240 with some lost quality, but in my opinion still quite watchable. I made this lower quality encode because I wanted to use mediafire which uploads/downloads quite fast and efficiently to make it easier on people with slower connections. However I will also be uploading the much better quality 640x480 video that I compressed into this video onto megaupload. Its just taking longer because their up loader is so slow and annoying. EDIT: Just in case anyone has problems with playing the x264 encoded video, this is a great codec that will allow your windows media player to play almost any type of video.

I might try after I finish encoding the child segment for this run, but mupen is giving me alot of problems right now. Ive encoded pretty much everything up till the end of jabu jabu. For some reason after jabu jabu, mupen freezes after I attempt to click stop avi. Ive been at it for two days and I may just end up ending the video there since theres not much else, but hopefully I can get the rest of the WIP encoded so that it feels more complete.

I could get the settings to work again, this run is always desynching on me in the deku tree no matter what I do.
Try deleting your .ini files and then trying. Sometimes a random setting that you thought would not affect anything is the culprit. Oh but enable mempak again afterwards obviously

I agree with Comical except about the "as intended" part. The point of the run as i understand it is to beat all the temples and trials. However I dont think that bloobiebla will be completing the dungeons anyway like the designers intended. Glitches are used and I am assuming the adult dungeons will be done out of order. Still though as Comical said I dont think the forest temple as a child would be as entertaining as bloobiebla has planned it as an adult, especially after SL made the video of it. EDIT: and oh ya where can bloobiebla get the extra bombchus to hover into the temple

Nvm I tried deleting the .ini file for my plugin and then turning up the settings again and it worked for some reason

Risk of API breaking. That's what happens when you check code out of a code versioning repository. I just "rm mencoder" and re-run make to get an up-to-date build when x264.h doesn't change. Doesn't take that much time, and static linking runs a bit faster. Compile x264 to produce libx264.a. This goes into /usr/local/lib and x264.h (provided directly) goes into /usr/local/include (or /usr/include if you want). Now go configure mplayer/mencoder and it should detect x264 and use it automatically. The final mencoder will show x264 when you run as "mencoder -ovc help". These steps are loosely true even under windows. Just compile with mingw and /usr becomes /mingw
Do you know any places to read up on compiling by using binaries, compiling from source, and other distribution methods that are commonly used? I have tried looking everywhere but i cant understand anything... In particular I want to compile my own MEncoder but it would be nice to know

I have been trying to playback a OoT movie with maximum Anisotriopic filtering set to 16x. However when link tries crawling through the tunnel from the sword maze back to kokiri forest, the game lags for a split second to render the main area and as a result the game desyncs. I am using Rice's Video plugin 6.1.0 and it works fine without filtering.

Here is the introduction part of the youtube series http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC_9pES-tGY I uploaded this part alone mostly to show the format and quality that I will be using for all the videos and get comments about the videos quality/disclaimer/etc. in order to see what i can change for future segments since i have never encoded a run before

Thanks that answers most of my questions and more except one, can avi files encoded with MEncoder and x264 be uploaded to youtube? The problem is i dont understand if encoding with the x264 changes the file format or if it keeps it as an avi or what. Sorry if it seems like a dumb question

I did not say a superslide could skip a cutscene. Also that cutscene is different because it alters your equipment. If im not mistaken the only other cutscene that does this is the light arrows cutscene and that is activated as soon as you enter the ToT not allowing you to superslide.

If you superslide into Ganon's cutscene and hold R, he doesn't knock the Master Sword away and you can use it.

Why exactly does that work anyway? It is because the shields up?
I dont know exactly but if i was to guess id have to say because while you have your shield up, most other actions are ignored until you put your shield down (picking up an item, climbing a ladder, etc) Supersliding into the fight freezes links shield up and so losing the master sword is ignored. When you finally put your shield down after the cutscene, the game no longer wants you to lose your master sword and so you keep it

Dear Bisqwit, When I encoded a movie using mencoder the source file,(in my case an avi) was converted to a .x264. I can play this file using Windows media player, but am having trouble uploading it to youtube. Is this because youtube does not accept the .x264 format? and if so are there any compression programs/codecs you know of that i can use? O and if you know, which file formats does youtube accept?

@Bloobiebla I am having trouble with the avi and other people might not want to download the whole file as well, so i was thinking of making a bunch of youtube vids to show your run in segments as you upload more wips and eventually have the whole run. I can start uploading immediately if you approve. Also if you approve pm or post any thing extra that you want in addition to the generic credits in any TAS movie

Also, when someone figured out how fast Link moves with various methods, did they find the speed he moves while gliding with a cucco? I'd just want to know how that compares with backwalking.
The maximum speed when Gliding with a cucco is the same speed as walking , but obviously you can change it by pressing forward by different amounts

if that works for cuccoo's then logically it should work with any item you can pick up, right? Does it work for bombs? because if so, then right before supersliding off of one bomb, you could "superslide grab" another, and when it's ready to blow up, stop the current superslide and then use the bomb to do whatever (new superslide at a different angle, megaflip, whatever). I can't think of anywhere that might even be useful if it works except maybe castle grounds if you're pressed for time to see the princess...
Ya I actually experimented with that and it works, but it is very difficult to space the bombs so that one doesnt blow up the other. Also like you said there aren't many uses for it since you cannot travel very far before the bomb explodes. And yes it works with anything that you can pick up...rocks, bushes, etc

ya... the only one that has bombs would be bloobiebla's route. Too bad I found it too late cause it would look awsome in a TAS. Oh well mayb a future run might make some use of it
