This is the right board, then (I think), but you should have made it clear this was just a fun run in your first post.

Through chapter 4. Chapter 3 is pretty optimla I think, but I'm much less confident about chapter 4. If someone could find a way to make that final Mogall attack Artur even when Seth doesn't have a javelin equipped, then I could give him his silver lance, OHKO the random zombies, AND get str, skl, and spd for both Vanessa and Seth (as opposed to just str and spd) while only abusing about 20 RNs. As it is, I'm happy to have found a situation that beats the chapter while still getting the levelups I did.

Redone through chapter 2, here: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5748/FE8Speedv4.vbm Didn't want to start chapter 3 until I was at least sure I was pressing buttons as early as possible, getting the cursor to characters in the optimal way. EDIT: I also need advice on how many javelins to buy. I'd hate to have the same issues I had before with hex editting. I'm guessing I'll need something like 5 once you factor in ones coming with new characters, but Id like to hear other people's opinions.

Thank you for the comments, I'll go through and fix the mechanical things. Also...I'm not quite sure why I manipulated the briand dying during the enemy phase. I had a reason, but I cannot for the life of me think of what that reason was, so I'll change it.

Here's the WIP through chapter 2: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5736/FE8Speedv3.vbm I'll wait a bit for comments before going on to chapter 3, but I'm rather proud of this, especially when comparing to my previous attempt.

I'm a terrible person who hasn't even started this run. I took one look at the RNG spreadsheet, got intimidated, and didn't look at it again until now. However, I've started up again, and am through the prologue, which obviously isn't worth posting due to being basically exactly the same as my previous attempt with slightly better curcor movement and such. I'd have to restart after hearing that holding L makes the menu go by faster anyways, so maybe it's not so much of a loss that I haven't worked on it. EDIT: Scratch that, I just realized that I forgot to turn off subtitle scrolling while in the options menu, putting me right back at the beginning of the prologue. However, it's 1:00 in the morning, so I'm going to bed instead of fixing it. EDIT2: Through Chapter 1. Will post a WIP at chapter 2, since again, chapter one has little worth showing (other than the shift to equipping Seth's silver lance, which allowed me to beat the boss in one round and keep Eirika alive and get a good levelup without wasting hundreds and hundreds of RNs).

For some time now, Snes9x has had a huge bug, in that it goes at incredible speeds even with frameskip turned off. Reinstalling had no effect, nor does changing the speed from 100%. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to solve it?

I've responded to your PM. Very informative. Here I'll respond to the other stuff: I realized that I pressed the buttons too late, but not until I was well into it. This was one of the things motivating me to stop the run for a while. Yeah, minimizing trading will be a pain, too. My philosophy before was to bring the minimum number of characters, but that just wastes time, unless I have to deselect characters for other reasons. And yes, I did do things like make unneccesary kills because I thought boosting exp would be helpful. Now that I realize that prepromotes are more than good enough to cover all my needs, I won't be doing this as much, if indeed at all.

Well, since Rridgway doesn't seem to be doing this run, I thought I might pick it up again. I never really intended to put it down forever, I just made it seem that way to encourage other people to pick it up while I was still disinterested. However, now I'm not so sure about my decision to measure time in turns rather than frames. Minimizing frames will require more thought here than it would in most games, what with wanting to minimize scrolling and things like that. The main advantage is that I won't have to worry about the freaking warp staff, as I'm almost positive it won't save time in this sense. Before I start, does anybody have any suggestions about things I didn't do before but should, or things I did but shouldn't?

The only question I can answer is the one about the eevee's evolution: it depends on how you fare in your first battle against him, and the second battle (the often-missed one near the entrance to indigo plateau). You get a Vaporeon if you lose the first and skip the second, a Flareon if you win one battle, and a Jolteon if you beat him both times.

I don't know if you guys are aware of this, but the japanese version of this game is pretty buggy, to the point that it can be beaten in six minutes without tools: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SKmcDPtjx1I A run using this obviously wouldn't obselete the main run, but there is a precedent for having a buggy run alongside a serious run.

How about a run of Fire Emblem 4 - seisen no keifu? I enjoyed that game, and it is supposed to be one of the best Fire Emblem games. Since runs of other FE-games are on the way now, it would be nice to see one of this one too. It is in Japanese, though, but the dialogue would be skipped anyway, so that shouldn't matter much, and translations are available too.
RNG abuse is nearly impossible. The only way to advance the RNG is by entering a battle.

I wasn't sure whether Rridgway was doing minimal turns or minimal frames, so I mentioned Moulder. Also, I can't believe I forgot that Syrene joins automatically after the chapter, despite remembering it for all the other NPCs. Saleh will have roughly the same function as Duessel if you aren't spamming for the warp staff.

Presuming Eirika's route, here's how I'd rate the characters: Eirika--needed to capture thrones Seth--your main battle force Franz--useful for some early chapters, but declined in usefulness, at least for me Gilliam--completely useless Moulder--possibly consider using him for the warp staff, though that requires getting him to an A rank in staves Vanessa--early flier. Possible candidate for promotion to Wyvern Knight Ross--completely useless Garcia--usable in early chapters due to high strength Neimi--completely useless Colm--might be useful for opening some doors. Recruit him anyways, to stop the "NPC phase" from appearing Artur--useless Lute--useless. Don't recruit. Natasha--uesless. Joshua--his killing edge would be useful if Seth ddin't have enough skill to critical just about anything he needs to. Ephraim--I don't see him getting much use Forde--useful for a few chapters Kyle--see above Tana--starts at a higher level than Vanessa, so may be a better candidate for promotion Amelia--Maybe recruit her (with Franz, not Eirika), but only for her speedwings Innes--might be a bit useful Tethys--If I have to say anything here, you don't deserve to do this run Gerik--can promote to ranger instantly, which may be useful Marisa--unrecruitable in a speedrun L'arachel--useless Dolza--helps with a few of the Baels int he next chapter Ewan--don't bother recruiting Cormag--unrecruitable in a speedrun Rennac--can't see him getting much use, considering he has the same move as Colm (iirc) Duessel--useful when Seth can't handle all the enemies Knoll--useless Myrrh--I don't see her getting any use Syrene--not sure if you can recruit her. If you can, she'll be useful for triangle attacks

Hm, that makes Eirika's route definitely better. You'll probably lose a turn in chapter 19 without a promoted flier, and a turn against the demon king without a pierce critical, but this could be solved by levelling Vanessa or Tana more than I did.

I can confirm that 14Eph would be much faster than 14Eir. Assuming we're counting turns, not frames, here's a rough estimate at total lengths of each chapter (well, not-so-rough for chapters I actually got to): 9Eph: 9 turns 10Eph: 3 turns 11Eph: 6 turns 12Eph: 4 turns 13Eph: 5 turns 14Eph: hard to say, but I'd guess aroung 7 turns 15Eph: again, hard to say, but somewhere around 5 turns 16Eph: 9 turns seems reasonable 9Eir: 4 turns, probably 10Eir: 3 turns 11Eir: 5, maybe? 12Eir: I can't imagine it being faster than 7 turns 13Eir: 1 turn 14Eir: 9 turns 15Eir: 6 turns 16Eir: 8 turns Based on this, Eirika's route looks faster. However, I'm terrible at judging times for rout chapters. Also, you won't be able to recruit Cormag in her route, which will probably cost you several turns against bosses. There won't be more than a difference of one or two turns in the end, I'd imagine.

Also note that controlling enemies requires at least one enemy to survive the turn, so it isn't usable on turns where you want to finish the enemies off. Also, I think that Ephraim's route is probably faster, due to having less "defeat all enemies" chapters, but this is just an educated guess.

Mines don't exist in FE8. There is a glitch where if you reset on some specific frame after an enemy moves, you can control the enemies, though I didn't use it because it would make the run completely pointless. EDIT: also, why should we have a TAS of FE6 before the american released ones

Something you'll definitely want to decide is whether you're going for least turns, or lowest time. I went for least turns, but you may decide differently. The frustrating aspect of this run that eventually made me abandon it is that the warp staff would be required for minimum turns. However, there are no units who join with an A rank in staves. The closest is Saleh with a C, but by my calculations, he can't reach A rank by chapter 19 (the first chapter where you benefit a lot from it) in Ephraim's route, which I believe to be the faster route. I couldn't face starting over to try and get Moulder or Natasha to a high enough rank, so I gave up. EDIT: Also note that in my aborted run, I select nearly every menu one frame too late. This also contributed to my decision to give up. EDIT2 (...): In the WIP I posted, I wasted a fair amount of time training Franz and Vanessa, but I ended up discovering that there's not much point to doing that--you get enough high level mounted units to make them unneccesary. EDIT3: Ok, this time I'll just leave the edit window open until I finish watching my aborted run. I attempted to recruit every character, thinking it would add entertainment without affecting my goal (minimum turns), but upon rewatching, I think this was the wrong choice. Another thing I did was to bring the minimum number of units to a chapter that I could get away with, forgetting that the time spent deselecting units was being wasted. Chapter 7 might be beatable one turn faster than I did...but that would require a Vanessa capable of one-rounding the boss. I'm not sure if it's possible for Vanessa to have enough skill to critical the boss with an iron/steel lance without wasting time giving her levels, though. Make sure to figure out how many javelins you'll need before progressing past the shop in chapter 2. I got a nasty desynch in chapter 8 after hex editting in some shopping, and plus, it's probably better to buy stuff in the chapter itself, which definitely cannot be hex editted in. I'm still not sure whether or not recruiting Amelia is worth it. One the one hand, you have to waste time recruiting her, but on the other, the speedwings she brings allows Tana to double enemies in the next chapter.

But how long does it last for? The rest of the level?
Iirc, it lasts quite a while--long enough to get from the beginning to the end of the level several times, probably.

I recall an interesting glitch in this game that may be exploitable. Use the start menu to warp to some checkpoint, then, before emerging, enter the frog cheat (you should be able to find it on gameFAQs. It's an ingame cheat, not a gameshark one). This will turn you into a frog with all of glover's normal porperties. However, if you jump up on the ball, the ball becomes capable of floating over pits for some reason.

I don't have any idea how optimized this is, as I know very little about the Hoenn games. However, I'd say this is at least as entertaining as the Gold run, so since that got published, I'm voting yes here. I had to frameskip through the whole thing, but that's just because menus are so slow in this game.

The route would be hellishly hard to plan, considering that there's a fair number of levels after you get the cape that decape you (not to mention a level where you have to kill yourself). Then there are some levels that could benefit from a cape, but have extenuating circumstances. Woods House, for instance, requires you to be small, but you can have a cpae in your item box. However, this would take enough time to set up that you're probably better off without a cape. I could try to come up with a route, but I'd rather wait and see if any experienced SMW TASers want a shot at it, as I would be completely incapable of spotting level breakages.
