Are there any games in which the performance core is just as good as the compatibility core? If so, we could have a system of performance, compatibility, accuracy depending on the needs of the game. However, we would need some good users to compile a list of games and what cores they are best suited for.
This would need trial and error - create a TAS on one core and test it on the other. Although you risk wasting a lot of time when the TAS is created on the performance core. (Performance core contains speed fixes, and after a while byuu got fed up with maintaining it so emulation fixes weren't added.)

Would it be possible to make Bizhawk recognize when the accuracy core is needed based on what game it is and otherwise use a higher performance core?
The main advantage of the accuracy core is that the video renderer can properly emulate games that change video parameters in the middle of a scanline (which is probably only Air Strike Patrol). The game itself is unaffected by the increased rendering accuracy.

I downloaded higan (I saw that it's the new name of bsnes) v93, and... Bizhawk run at least faster :o (And higan have no TAS tools)
(fixed) Is that the 64-bit version (if you have a 64-bit CPU)? For the record, on the SimCity title screen I get 143 fps with higan-balanced.exe (higan-performance.exe is not recommended, and higan-accuracy.exe is only required by one or two games) when I disable all synchronization.

You would get a little bit more speed with a 64-bit version (try the recently released bsnes v93!), but 2GHz is a bit too low...

The "earliest frame possible" rule allows movies to be judged against each other. Otherwise it'd be subjective. So all the game's TASers have to do is to agree on another rule, like "fastest way to show the credits".

I think the game music isn't needed. If it could be somehow disabled though then the sound effects could be used.

I'd be so over this if I didn't have a job... orz Anyway, my advice is to start with selecting a song, and then editing the video so that it fits.

I think you can combine several video, audio and subtitle files into one MKV file that has one video, audio and subtitle stream.

I really don't hear much of a difference between "32" and "orig". After several listenings the former is just a little bit muffled.

Bobo: Be careful with recommendations. Try SaiKano, Mai-HiME, Clannad and Kotoura-san.

Well, certain video game systems could only use FM synthesis, and their PCM streaming isn't good enough to require higher bitrates.

That's why you just hack a completion percentage HUD display into the game. ;)

Thank you creaothceann :) I hope the encoders will offer a slower video as well for the final submission, as this run can be hard to keep up with.
No problem. I don't know if the official encoders know about my method of slowing down the audio with GoldWave (or if they even have a better-sounding method), so I'd offer uploading that audio. It's not as simple as halving the sample rate.

I don't think I'm done with this level, it's too complex for me to be satisfied yet.
Well it already looks very impressive and "TAS-like" (objects seem to "line up" neatly for you to pass).

The NoIntro sets are better than GoodX, but they don't cover all systems afaik.

For that there's a few simple steps: 1. take game apart 2. see how it works 3. find bug 4. abuse bug

Games featuring inventories maybe? Bugs are fun.

The most accurate thing to do would be recording the button status whenever the game checks it, imo. It's even possible to convert frame-based movies by playing them back while simultaneously only recording what the game actually reads back. (Converting access-based movies would also be possible, but wouldn't make sense except if lsnes would be discontinued and the existing lsnes movies would have to be converted to BizHawk's format.) The remaining difficulty would be changing the emulators and tools to the slightly different scenario.

Why wouldn't 7z be derived from 7-Zip?

The NES is normally limited to at most 8 sprites per scanline; if the game has more than that then some of the sprites will flicker on and off.
If the NES works like the SNES then it's the game logic that produces the flickering (to keep them at least partially visible). If it wouldn't do that then some sprites would be permanently on and some would be permanently off.
