Config -> Customize -> Accept Background Input
Cool, thanks! Glad to see that it's just a matter of setting up a config rather than some crazy arcane back-end wizardry.

I have half a crazy idea to run multiple games at the same time using a single controller input (real time, not TAS); is that possible at all with Bizhawk? (Doesn't look like it, since the window deactivates if I click out of it.)

Chulip--it's an inherently weird game (so it's funny to watch), and requires a lot of path optimization and luck manipulation. You can even have an any % run (the non-tool-assisted version I saw involved grinding for money by finding rings so you don't do any unnecessary kissing) and a 100% run.

How "pacifist" can a TAS be in Super Metroid? Besides the bosses, there's several rooms where you have to kill everything to proceed, and most of them can, in theory, be skipped or bypassed, right? (Sure, Zebes self-destructs at the end, but that's technically not Samus' fault.)
