This is a long overdue update but it's still going to be a bit rambly, I have a lot on my mind right now. I have purchased airfare for DefeneSam, Wrentendo and I out of my own pocket and I will be attending AGDQ 2018 for essentially the entire week, although visiting family for a couple of days in the middle. I missed the hotel registration which filled up very fast and I don't yet know how I will solve that but it's probably going to be expensive. As I noted I won't be creating a donation request thread but I left http://donate.acbit.net up - my hope is that folks from my Twitch channel can help shoulder the load so the site membership doesn't have to, and this is all I'll say on that matter. We only have "Bonus" games at AGDQ 2018, but fear not. The official description of this category is as follows: "Bonus: Your run was selected to be a donation incentive for the event. Note that we occassionally cut these runs during the event if we are running behind schedule, although it is rare."[sic] Super Monkey Ball is confirmed in as a bonus game, i.e. it's a donation incentive that will show up on the tracker. Trust me when I say TASBot being a donation incentive will ensure this run makes it in, especially with us coming in under time due to the replay mechanism shaving several seconds off each level due to not having to do the level zoom-around and being able to leave the level right after hitting the goal. SMBall1 is listed on the schedule as "SETUP BLOCK 5" directly after Zela1's normal+extra run, currently slated for Friday morning on January 12th. Super Dram World 2, the GrandPOOBear 100% run, is confirmed as a bonus game (and thus as noted above, a donation incentive). Paradoxically, the TAS playaround run being created by Masterjun is *also* a donation incentive. The entertainment to time value is so high that I'm convinced they'd show the incentive even if it wasn't met. :) SDW2 is, to the best of my knowledge, slated on the schedule as "SETUP BLOCK 8" directly after the Super Mario World no cape race on Saturday evening, i.e. prime time on the final night. Finally, I'll be speaking with Darkman this weekend on in-between run segments with my plan being to do 1-3 analysis portions where I use TAS tools to show, in slow motion and frame advance, why a particular trick a runner did was so difficult and use the tools as a way to praise the runner for their skill. This is the least defined TAS related element for this event and requires a fair bit of work on my part since I'll be doing the actual presentation, so I'm trying to delegate as much of the work on the other two runs as I can to others. Huge thanks to people like Masterjun, MediaMagnet, serisium, timeshifter, deef, coderjo, Ilari, CyclopsDragon, GrandPOOBear, p4plus2 and countless others who have stepped up to help out on random things. That's it for now, I need sleep as I haven't been getting enough of that, but I wanted to at least post an update on where things are at. Discuss! :)

This isn't a horrible idea, for a game with SRAM there may be, but I think we can think outside the box on what is possible and do a bit more than just auto-play. I have more to say in this thread but I'll do that some other time.

Congrats on the first submission. There are parts of this that are decidedly not entertaining (good grief he moves slow) but there were other parts that amused me, such as taking over the demo and the sheer absurdity of spitting at an enemy and somehow seeing it do something useful. I mean, I don't know about you, but if *I* try to spit straight up in the air it doesn't end particularly well. And stuff. Ahem. Anyway, interesting run, voted Yes. One question, though - can you please elaborate on why making changes seemed to cause the loading time of the next level to increase? Is there some kind of frame rule like SMB's 21-frame counter or is it something else? It's OK if you don't know, I'm mostly just curious. Thanks and good job!

Sorry for the delay, the fires near my home have been a huge distraction. My own home is safe, but my manager's home burned to the ground as did the home of my daughter's friend. It's still scary here and I'll be spotty for a bit longer. I want to address the entitlement mentality here really quick. A lot of staples were not accepted this year - no Super Mario Maker, not even Super Metroid. There's plenty of salt to go around, but after talking to the GDQ submission committee it's clear that they really wanted us to have the opportunity to show content that is representative of what can be found on TASVideos and they felt Super Monkey Ball was a better choice. Kaizo nearly made it in but they opted to go with Super Dram World 2 instead. To that end, I'm working with the team in #tasbot to try to do a donation incentive TAS for Super Dram World 2 and anyone here is welcome to help out with that. That's all the time I have to respond, but I did want everyone to know that I will be attending in person. More later!

With a lot of help from dedicated viewers on my Twitch channel I was able to submit all 5 of the aforementioned runs to the stie. They will not become visible until the committee reviews them for content, which could take a couple of days. I'll be sure to update this thread as soon as anything happens. For the next couple of days, I'm taking a few (in my opinion, well-earned) days off. Thanks to everyone who helped out!

Below is the draft submission text for DKC2: Game name: Donkey Kong Country 2 shenanigans Description: DKC2 is a well-loved classic, and we've figured out a way to complete it in a much faster time than it's ever been beaten before. But why stop there when we can go further.. so much further. This run will feature at least one surprise worthy of TASBot's storied history. Game Console: SNES Category 1 name: DKC2 by p4plus2, Masterjun, and total Category 1 estimate: 5:00 Category 1 video: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/176104694

I'm a little worried about Dragster becoming something of a black eye for TASbot if not handled tactfully. I trust the TASbot team to do so, but just wanted to voice some concern, as a lot could happen between now and January.
This is a reasonable concern. I believe we can do so, in part because our goal is to highlight the achievement of the human runners who have reached perfection. It is not possible to breach the 5.57 barrier through human or bot skills, but it is very challenging for a human to beat the game in any marathon setting. TASBot can do so handily, albeit right now we don't have a clean way to start so even TASBot takes a dozen tries or so at the moment. I may tweak the submission based on your feedback, but that will happen later tonight. I am very busy with work today and would welcome anyone who has time and wants to draft a submission from the list above in the format above to do so. Thanks!

The lineup from oldest to newest is locked in - Atari 2600 Dragster, SNES DKC2, F-Zero X, GC Super Monkey Ball, and SNES Kaizo Mario World 3. As of tonight we now have reliable-enough-to-be-comfortable console verifications on all of them except F-Zero which I lack the cart for. We still need someone to write up descriptions using the format in the above posts for F-Zero X, Kaizo, and DKC2. The DKC2 video is in my past videos / the stream I just finished, the rest are from the poll. I'm exhausted and need to get sleep urgently so I'm holding off from snagging links. I'm done doing verifications, tomorrow is just tweaking submissions and then actually making them. Thanks to everyone who provided support through this process!

Below is the draft submission text for SMBall1: Game name: TASBot plays Super Monkey Ball Description: Super Monkey Ball by byrz and CyclopsDragon is nonstop action. The viewer response to SMBall2 at HRDQ was very good and this run is highly rated. What stands out here is the ability to perform console verification using the game's built-in replay system, a first for disc-based systems. This run can be shown in different ways - straight through showing all levels with no pauses, showing all levels but looping interesting levels to provide additional commentary, or showing select levels with in-depth commentary. Game Console: GC Category 1 name: All levels Category 1 estimate: 12:55 Category 1 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PufPH99SxLU Category 2 name: All levels, looped replay commentary Category 2 estimate: 20:00 Category 2 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PufPH99SxLU Category 3 name: Select levels, in-depth looped replay commentary Category 3 estimate: 10:00 Category 3 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PufPH99SxLU

Okay, I just finished watching through the first 30 stars of N64 Super Mario 64 (USA) "70 stars, no BLJ" and was once again floored by all the amazing tricks that are pulled off in that run. In spite of its length, that has got to be a main contender IMO for Door #5.
What do you think? I know some people think BLJ is cheap or overused, so this would be an opportunity to show what a TAS can do in the game without it.
I'm not opposed to showing something like that at perhaps SGDQ 2018 if we opt to attend but I think we have to give M64 a rest in general (for the same reasons I'm recommending passing up DS Mario 64) - we just did a quasi Mario 64 run at AGDQ 2017 and I think we should wait before pitching it again. Still, it truly is one of the more amazing runs and it blows me away every how much effort went into it. So I'll use this reply to say we've discussed it in #tasbot and we're going with F-Zero X. It rounds out the rest of the selections the best and while we can't currently guarantee console verification it's at least possible and the committee can make a decision on the game's merits itself. I'm drafting the Super Monkey Ball submission text now and link_7777 is working on Dragseter; we'll post our submission text here before I submit.

- GC Super Monkey Ball with console verification via replay files (already confirmed working on two setups)
Saw this run on HRDQ and although it's extremely impressive, each level goes by so quickly that there's no time to understand what just happened before the next level is upon you. Unlike Kaizo above, there's no down time to process and appreciate what's going on, so after a while it just feels like you're getting bombarded with input. I think what would make it better is if the full replay of every level could be shown so the audience gets a second look at the tricks, however that would go against the spirit of the speedrun, and may cause desyncs requiring the whole run to be done over...[/quote] There's a couple of *big* differences worth noting here - first, that was SMBall2 and this is SMBall1 so it's not the same game but more importantly is the fact that at HRDQ we were using Dolphin and playing back in an emulator whereas for AGDQ 2018 we'll be playing back on a real console using in-game replay files, moving from one replay file to another. Heck, I'm going to pitch it as alternate categories based on your feedback - straight through run with no stops, all levels but allowing the replay on each level to loop to fully provide commentary, and selected levels of interest with in-depth commentary while omitting boring filler levels. Note that because we're using the replay method we don't have to wait for the exit animation to complete so in some ways this method will actually be faster than a complete playthrough, although loading times may end up being longer.

Meh. It's neat, but not something I'd think is very GDQ entertaining (unless there's some big history I don't know about). But if we absolutely must submit it, then I guess we have no choice?
Well, we technically have a choice but no, not on this one. :) Trust me, it'll be worth it even if it isn't accepted.

I've already voiced my candidate and reasons for Door #5. It'd be a shame to hold back such a great run indefinitely. However, in lieu of that choice, Family Feud is always good for generating laughs. :)
I think the run you suggested was [3358] GBC Pokémon: Yellow Version "arbitrary code execution" by MrWint in 05:48.28 but unfortunately we have no ability to console verify that and that's the only way at all that it would likely be accepted. I actually agree with you that it's a very impressive run but that will have to wait until we have better accuracy. Family Feud also does not sync even after many hours of testing and, uh, the two runs of it we have now are both wildly inappropriate for a GDQ event. We have to be above reproach and the content we have now from the two movies we have is downright offensive to a large subsection of our audience, not to mention many members of the site. Sorry to shoot you down on both of your suggestions but feel free to keep them coming!

As was noted above, the poll results are in for your perusal. There were over 380 responses and for the most part it's actually high quality data in the sense that people don't appear to have been trying to game the results. Yes, some people only voted for just their favorite game but removing those results, according to deef, didn't substantially change the results due to the large sample size. I am impressed with the number of man hours from this and I will probably do it again next time, although probably with a *much* smaller list of options. Without further ado, here's where discussions are heading: Based on the results of the poll and discussions in #tasbot we've narrowed down to submitting the following games: - SNES Kaizo Mario 3, hopefully with console verification (to be tested as soon as possible, potentially as early as tonight) - GC Super Monkey Ball with console verification via replay files (already confirmed working on two setups) - Atari 2600 Dragster with recent console verification (it may not be accepted but we've been told we absolutely must submit it) - SNES DKC2 out of our back pocket, an unpublished run by p4plus2 and assistance from Masterjun (we can consistently crash the game and we think we can finally get an ACE to be consistent on console but aren't there just yet. This one is risky because we're running out of time.) - Door #5. Please help define what this is, because there are too many good options. I'm quite fatigued from the last several weeks of work and some very challenging issues in real life that have me beaten down but I will endeavor to keep moving forward. If anyone wants to take a crack at a draft submission text from any of these runs please reply with one. If you have a strong opinion after reviewing the poll results of something you think really ought to be the 5th submission, *please* speak up, we don't have much time left. Thanks!

First of all, great job on HRDQ! That was thoroughly enjoyable. Second, I mentioned this in the survey but I'll also mention it here: I would love to see MrWint's GBC Pokémon: Yellow Version "Arbitrary Code Execution" in 05:48.28 at AGDQ 2018.
This isn't a bad suggestion but the challenge is we can't currently console verify it. We'd have to show it in an emulator and for an ACE like that I think it's better to wait until we have the tools we need to try this on real hardware. Eventually we may just give in and do it in an emulator because I do think this one is quite fun. Thanks for the feedback and suggestion, and for taking the poll!

I'm happy to report that everything went quite well during Harvey Relief Done Quick / #HRDQ2017 despite being taken off guard by the event being ahead of schedule and not realizing I was on an open mic (twice) during setup times. There are some things that weren't perfect due to the rushed nature of the event - the schedule was running so far ahead I ran out of time to post an announcement on Twitter/IRC/Forums and I'm still not happy that attribution was yet again messed up (none of the author's names of the TAS's we showed were displayed on the layout like I expected) but overall it was a reasonably smooth showing. It was good having TheAxeMan there to help physically get things set up and to have on hand during Battletoads (and being able to console verify the game-end glitch on the picture-in-picture camera). TheMexicanRunner and JC provided some fun banter for Battletoads with TheAxeMan throwing in technical details here and there and Geoff and Cyclops were on hand with some really good commentary for Super Monkey Ball 2. Audience response was reasonably good, although my daughter was resting her head on my shoulder and chat fixated on WrenTendo possibly being a vampire and the conversation was much more confusing after that. So, some numbers - at the start of our block when they switched our mics on the total was $83,987 and at the beginning of Undertale (the run following the TAS block) the total was $86,207 for a total of $2,220 raised during the TAS block itself. Viewership hovered around 30k (I think - that's what chat said, please correct me if I'm wrong). After I had recovered from running the TAS block I made a donation of $176.36 during LoZ:BotW which is every cent I've ever made from Twitch. That's all I have to say about that, I did my best given the very limited amount of time available to practice and I have no regrets. This gave me an opportunity to analyze what I still need to work on for AGDQ 2018 if I present and it also gave me an opportunity to gauge audience reaction to running on an emulator and I think we're safe there as it wasn't nearly the backlash I expected. Speaking of AGDQ 2018, submissions have been pushed back a week and I'll be chatting with folks in #tasbot and working out what to submit for that this coming weekend. Thanks again to everyone who supported the efforts so far!

Edit: For anyone coming from Twitter, the rest of this thread may have AGDQ 2018 spoilers but read below anyway. There's not much time for this, but GDQ may do a marathon this weekend: https://twitter.com/GamesDoneQuick/status/902773537802514432 In brief, I've offered to do TAS stuff for a Games Done Quick online marathon for Hurricane Harvey relief that is slated to run this weekend. We only have a few days to pick content. What do we have *right now* that would be a good showing? I have access to literally the entire NES library aside from obscure games thanks to BigJohn82 (a local collector) and I can spend the next couple of nights doing sync tests so we can stick with console verification for now. Should we instead re-show something that went badly in a previous GDQ and provide it with either better commentary or some other context? There's not much time so respond soon, every suggestion and offer of help is useful. We can split this post off in its own thread as needed but for now I think it makes the most sense to leave it here. Thanks for all the support!

I figure no one actually read the thread I linked?
I did but the last activity was in April and the project seems stalled. With AGDQ 2018 submissions opening this Saturday there is no hope of having it ready enough to be something we should commit to. It'd be great for a future event, though! Discussions in #tasbot on Freenode IRC have gone well but there are more things to iron out so feel free to swing by (http://chat.TASBot.net). Thanks!

disc-based console run
There's been some progress with this idea recently. Post #451802 and most of that thread.
For a live event, maybe a camera pointed at the screen and some basic image recognition would work for a bot to wait for loading times (assuming a permissive enough RNG)?
What you are describing has been approached in a different way by using a vsync detect chip (with mixed success) but that extra information doesn't resolve the fundamental issue with console verification of disc-based consoles, namely that variations in disc loading times impacts RNG and results in non-deterministic behavior. Console verification requires absolute reproducibility. Good thought though!

One avenue of ACE that is untapped so far is sending information back to TASBot via controller pings.
I think that's precisely what "they have specifically asked us to avoid focusing on technical shenanigans for this event" is referring to. In other words, they want just speedruns, not technical shenanigans like that.
Just to refine this a bit more, they are asking us to not focus on technical shenanigans but they are not telling us we have limits on what we can do in the name of entertainment and polish. Thinking back to AGDQ 2017, virtually every single run was there because it was technically hard. Making console verification work on the (very technically challenging) NES Classic? Technical in nature. High datarate in SMB3, MM1, and especially LoZ:LttP requiring new hardware and supporting software built just for the event? We were insane. Assembly language level optimization to enable not one, not two, but three consoles to work in concert to pull off the effect? Technical beyond anything that was sane to try, which is exactly what motivated us to try. The thing is, they don't want us to focus on doing things that are hard, they want us to focus on doing things that are entertaining and well polished. If we take advantage of the fact that we already have the ability to control things like the latch pin we may be able to pull off this suggestion without a large amount of development work compared to previous events. Even if we were to do something like this it would be the only part of the TAS block like it, i.e. AGDQ 2017 was a tech fest from start to finish, whereas this would be a single piece and the only thing like it in the block.

My point was meant to be that even with live commentary it won't be very interesting without something interactive, sorry this wasn't clear. Right now we're talking about 3-4 people sitting on the couch for ~30 minutes playing pre-recorded inputs off someone's laptop. There won't be a 'runner', no one will even have a controller, and TASBot doesn't even need to be there. Sure this will be more representative of typical TASing, but to me it doesn't sound very fun.
This description would be awful. I'd hate to watch a block like that, let alone be part of making it. I touched on this a few posts ago but I'm convinced that what we need to focus on is variety, entertainment, and polish. We need one run from each category, without having too much of one thing. We're allowed, as a concession, to show a run or two that can only be played back on an emulator but I would definitely not want to see an entire TAS block full of that type of content. I'd like to see a 3D or disc-based console run or two, definitely, but I'd also like a couple of console verified runs in there as well with one of them probably doing something glitchy for the people that like to see that. Our goal over the next two weeks is to identify a variety of entertaining content. The goal over the next two months after that is to add polish to said content, practicing it regularly. Right now we're doing the right thing by refining what we want to put in the block. I mentioned this a few times but I don't plan to be "that guy in charge" this year - I'll keep guiding this conversation in a direction I think is right but I'm not going to be authoritative and force anyone to do something specific. Feel free to disagree with me and keep the conversation going - thanks all!

Post subject: $500 donated by Ciena to PCF; no plans to ask for help here

I only just now realized I never replied to confirm that my employer, Ciena Corporation, matched our donation to PCF up to the $500 matching limit. I put the donation matching request in shortly after the event but it took them a few weeks to process it and I apparently never posted about it here when it was confirmed. As an aside, I do not currently intend to start another thread asking for donations for future events. We can't currently afford to go to more events but I don't feel right about continuing to ask for donations every year through the forums. The members of the site have done much to enable me to attend several GDQ events now, but a lot of other great people on the team have selflessly paid their own way to attend event after event. This is not me saying I won't accept help, just that I won't use the forums to effectively beg for assistance as it didn't feel good and it clearly stopped being effective as of last year when I couldn't even raise half of my expenses. Leading the organizational efforts of these events has most definitely been costly for me, more than just monetarily, but it has also resulted in some life-changing experiences that are beyond any dollar amount. To that end, I won't be asking for donations here but I won't shut the door to people who may want to help. The above donation methods will continue to work should anyone want to use them. For anyone who is inclined to do so, please feel free to subscribe to my Twitch channel at http://twitch.tv/dwangoAC - I will use any and all revenue from Twitch to help fund charity related expenses and I'll continue to be just as transparent as I have been here. I'd like to again thank everyone from TASVideos who contributed. The donations over the years have helped us come to events during times we otherwise wouldn't have, such as that one time a tree fell on our house or that other time that we had unexpected medical expenses. The vast majority of the financial assistance that helped us get to GDQ events came right here from TASVideos members, to whom I am forever indebted to. There is one last important order of business in this lengthy post. I'd specifically like to honor micro500 who shouldered one of the largest burdens of anyone, a burden that was as much financial as it was emotional as a result of how much he willingly took on and how much he was forced to take on because of failings on my part that I still feel the need to apologize for and learn from. The fact that he donated so much of his time (and money, including his recent SGDQ 2017 donation to DWB) is a testament to his dedication and outstanding character. The way micro500 stood up for what was right is something I will never forget and had a profound (and ultimately positive) impact on me as a person. It was an honor to work with you, my friend. Thank you for everything over the years. May your future endeavors be as successful as you know your past endeavors have been.

I'm going to scattershot reply to a few things that have been said in the thread thus far that I have thoughts on. First, I agree with the general sentiment that a TAS block that consists entirely of new runs made just for GDQ would probably be a poor choice for a number of reasons, the least of which is that we only have 10 days left and the quality of such submissions would probably be low. Having said that, I do want to submit at least one "surprise" run that will be new and tailored just for the GDQ event. I'd prefer that surprise was a playaround of some game where the intent is to cause as much mayhem through glitchiness as possible before completing the game well under existing human times for the target game. This game should probably *not* be SMW because if we submit that again we're going to get some really dirty looks but I'm sure there are some other good choices. We would probably submit this game as a surprise with a private note to the submissions committee to allow the run to be developed over the next couple of months, to be finished by the end of the year. As far as highlighting runs that have been at GDQ events is concerned, the biggest issue is that many, many things we have done cannot be submitted on the site. Have a look at the list of past GDQ appearances and compare it to what we have been able to submit (let alone get published) and you'll see what I mean. This is something I have tried and failed to convince the rest of the staff is important and I am no longer willing to fight that fight, it is clear I'm outnumbered and GDQ content is not important enough (or doesn't fit in well enough) to be in a first-class category that is searchable through the Movies page. Having said that, I really do like the idea of a badge / icon that indicates a given run has been shown at a GDQ for the ones that *are* published. Thoughts? I think perhaps people are going too far with saying no ACE at all - the problem is that things veered way too far into the technical showing-off realm (I blame myself entirely for that getting as out of hand as it did). Having a nice, exciting ACE would still be very welcomed by a large subset of the audience, but that doesn't mean it is a hard requirement that we have one either. What I'm trying to say is what's important is entertaining the audience and I'm not willing to hardline exclude content before we've even had a chance to see it. I, for one, would welcome a fun exploit with a short but interesting payload if it fit in with the rest of the block well. Bonus points if said ACE allows us to do a credits roll to on-screen highlight the efforts of everyone who contributed to the TAS block, that was a good choice during AGDQ 2017. Yet again I end my diatribe with the question - thoughts? Thanks again to everyone chipping in to work through content. In light of the fact this thread is now firmly discussing AGDQ 2018 I'm going to change the thread title to reflect that.
