Another mysterious "no" vote without an explanation. Is it possible, software wise, to require a comment with each vote? Especially the "no" votes?

It could have been an accident...I've accidentally voted YES or NO sometimes and there's no way to take it back. I can see why some people might not like it. It's a very long movie, and I think if you are unfamiliar with the game it might not seem that interesting. In my opinion, this is very well done. I especially liked the parts where the warrior "rides" the shield bearer while he glides.

Oh please do share this movie. Zangief was always viewed as the hard character to win with back "in the day."

Are macros available? EDIT: Don't forget, MK doesn't really use circles, just cardinal directions like Back, Down, Forward.

No, re-recording is not a typo. I made a demonstration vid of the beginning of Castlevania: SOTN.

I did that in the arcades...funny. More fun, for me, was freeze opponent, jump backwards and do second fatality instead (throw the snowball). Funny colors again. OR, as Shang Tsung, freeze, change into Jax, crush head.

Anyone working on this game should be checking out some of these FAQs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/game/3565.html The "death punch" sounds interesting. And no, you cannot "Finish" any secret characters or boss characters, which is one of the reasons I think the hidden characters should be skipped.

Wow. I didn't think anyone would beat SMB any faster. How did he runs through walls like that?

The Kintaro fatality is very easy to pull off. Just hold down low punch for 25 seconds I think it was.
Actually, the easier way (since a time attack round shouldn't take that long) is just hold LP from before the fight begins (after the characters are on screen but before you have control of the character).

I would use that for sure if I were to make this run. I'm not 100% sure that I will make this though. It has been soooo long since I was good at this game. What would be the best way to defeat an opponent? How fast can it be done? Anyone knows this?
Using slo-mo and re-records should make this easy. The whole thing that made MK's AI so fucking difficult was it's flawless reaction time. Now the player has flawless reaction time as well as the ability to correct mistakes and expertly predict AI behavior. As far as speed goes, I know the uppercut is the single most damaging move in the game for any character. But slo-mo allows for expert combo control which therefore yields bigger damage. Shang Tsung should be able to, for example, land a jump kick and throw three fireballs. That's really hard to do at normal speed but now it should be a snap. I remember that the SNES MK3 had a slo-mo "code" that I used to do all kinds of crazy combos like juggling opponents across the screen using High Punch.

Isn't there a kintaro fatality with shang tsung? Doing this run will really put your art skills to the test - you'll need to pick the best and the baddest end moves (you have hundreds to choose from).
Yeah, that was one of my favorites to break out in the arcade. Always got a big reaction from the crowd. Other people-pleassers: Kung Lao using his hat to split opponent down the middle (unique animation) Jax tearing opponent's arms off (also unique) Baraka impaling opponent on knives Sub-Zero is fun because of the freeze, which extends the Fatality time. Many graphical glitches are possible if you morph into Sub-Zero, win match, freeze (re-freeze if necessary), then morph into someone else and do a Fatality.

I would love to see a Metal Slug "superplay," but this site only publishes "time attack" movies using slowdown & savestates. What is rc0? Is that like a input record? I'd love to see that.

I'd like to see an outline of the strategy used...I'm not sure I understand why the computer went to jail...or did you go to jail?

I think it looks a little cooler to "normal" fly through and dodge the bubbles rather than bounce off the bubbles. Plus it's faster.

MKII on SNES has all blood & fatalities. They learned their lesson after MKI.

I would say MK II would be more fun than MK I, especially a Shang Tsung movie as suggested. MK II has some pretty weird combos (especially when slow-motion comes into play). MK3 is even crazier, if you want to go there. I would say skip hidden characters as they can't be fatalitied and they only make the game take longer. Any hit, blocked or not, cancels a flawless victory. But that's good, because otherwise every round will take that much longer for Shao Khan to say "Flawless Victory."

My name is Dan and I'm a student at SUNY Albany.

2) How did you first hear of/get into timeattack videos?
I first saw the famed Morimoto Super Mario Bros 3 video via a link on insertcredit.com, and within a month I discovered a variety of sites like this one.

3) What about timeattack videos captivates you? What makes it worth spending many many hours creating them?
The videos I enjoy most are made from games I played as a kid and remember. I would play these games for hours, either by myself or with friends, so to see them completed quickly and flawlessly really blows my mind. Mega Man 1 and 2 are still my favorites of the movies so far. They both go way "outside the box."

4) What is the process you use to start, plan, and complete a timeattack video?
As stated in number 3, games I played as a kid are of primary interest to me. The only movie I've completed (so far) was Bionic Commando, a game I was totally devoted to. Of course, the fact that you couldn't save your progress or use a password may have been a factor. Planning means looking up/asking about any known shortcuts, bugs, or tricks. Beyond that, you have to try crazy stuff and see what works. It's also important to know how fast a regular (unassisted) run lasts, because that's the time you positively must beat.

5) Which timeattack video that you've created are you most proud of? Why?
Well, I only finished the one, and it was completed obsoleted. But I hope to work with the Neo Geo games once Final Burn Alpha re-recording is perfected, as the Neo Geo rules. Still my favorite system.
teknoj wrote:
6) There seems to be some criticism/antagonism directed at the creators of timeattack videos. How do you explain this? Does this represent competing philosophies about how video games should be played?
Political is more like it. The people who are angry are very angry, and they don't want to hear why they're wrong. The comforting truth I've realized is it doesn't matter what those people say. There's a simple logical explanation as to why "tool-assisted" and "unassisted" are different yet equally valid. The angry people don't want to hear it, so I stopped telling them. I just wish they would follow my example and shut the hell up.

I aspire to be a filmmaker but I wouldn't consider this a part of that aspiration.

I don't think a game should be excluded because the genre is unpopular. Perfection is perfection, so I say if you can get a "perfect" time attack, publish it. If people don't like it, they don't have to watch.
The genre is plenty popular. What's at issue here is entertainment, not to mention questions as to whether or not a different character (or characters) would increase speed or entertainment. As it's been often said, even if a game is fun or very hard to play, that doesn't mean a time attack will be fun or impressive to watch.

Should we take a vote on these "recommendations?" Create a poll topic? Or is this, ultimately, Bisqwit's decision because it's his website?

I would say "don't miss shots" but once you get the Option that's nearly impossible. Maybe kill the boss a little faster? I know you have to lure his arms away from his eye, but it seems like you waited a little too long once it opened.

I strongly recommend Hitler no Fukkatsu (a.k.a. Japanese Bionic Commando) for "recommended" status. Mega Man X is another good one, although is that being improved again? EDIT: Whoa, Rockman 2 is not "recommended?" What up with that?

I'm not familiar with this game. What glitches are being used? Did you die on purpose? When attacking bosses, you seem to attack faster than necessary, resulting in wasted shots. Don't do that. I can't tell if this is optimal or not. Seems to be a fair beginning to something. Obviously a "no" vote until refined.
