Thanks for the tip. I had a different problem with VirtuaNES; I was trying to watch playback at a rate other than 100%. Usually I watch replays at a slight acceleration to save time.

I thought of the egg-spitter as "Birdo" and the running bird as "Ostro" because that's how they were described in Nintendo Power, a "magazine" I read religiously at the time. Of course, there's also the undeniable resemblence between the running bird and an Ostrich. The egg bird, on the other hand, doesn't really look like anything.
Also take note: the end credits describe the giant crab boss as "Clawglip."

i just watched the NG2 run, and it's quite good as well. Have you contacted Bisqwit yet regarding these movies? Regardless of their comparison to Lezard's, his runs are on VirtuaNES, so we don't have any Famtasia runs at all.

Boco, the link you posted is not a speed run. It is a "no damage" run. He takes his sweet frigging time, actually, watching every cutscene and reading every word of dialogue. He then goes through each and every stage, slowly but surely, killing guys and collecting items he doesn't really need. I had actually stumbled onto that a few days ago, hoping it was a speed run so I could learn something from watching it. I didn't.
I've seen the trick to go through the barrier in Area 15, but I never actually tried it. I went under it.
If you don't want to share that speed run you have, could you at least describe how to skip Area 9? Is it as simple as skipping the barrier in Area 7, and therefore you don't need the 3-way from Area 9?

I just wanted to say I really dig this new run. Sleepz' use of Toad was really cool, right from the start. I loved jumping into Birdo (or is it Ostro?) and grabbing and throwing the egg almost simultaneously. Also, I'm not sure I exactly understand this "juggling" phenomenon, but it looked great on Level 6-3.
Great job.

Just a note to anyone who doesn't understand: The link I posted goes to a "music archive" of NSF files. These files contain all the music (and in some cases, sound effects) for NES games.
There are no ROMs there, but there are emulation links.

I'd love to see that run you have. Can you share it with us or send it to Bisqwit?
I found a way around the barrier in my as-yet-unpublished Japanese run. Looks cool too.
It's not that interesting, only slower as the 3-way is a much weaker weapon. This means spending more time shooting the giant robot guard and the reactor to end the level. The only advantage the 3 way gives is it shoots through shields, like the armored tanks that attack in the beginning of Area 7. But it's just as easy, and in my opinion cooler, to evade them.
Agreed.

Well, I don't have a stopwatch, but at first viewing Masakado's NG1 movie seems a little tighter than Lezard's. I enjoyed the "style" of his play, for lack of a better word. And he definitely did a few things quicker, like the third boss (the jumping ninja) and I saw a few jumps along the way that he either skipped or streamlined.
One could interpret a "yawn" as arrogant too. Don't forget, this is supposed to be fun. Let's not start taking things too seriously here. We're playing video games.

The difference in sound quality between the two versions is staggering. I beg of you, use the Japanese version.

More importantly, using FMVs will cut down on storage space. I had nearly 2 Gigs of speed run videos squatting on my hard drive. Now all I keep are a few hundred kB of ROMs & FMVs.
Save Space! Use FMV!

Speaking of Morimoto, I tried to download FMV files direct from his site, but my computer can't understand Japanese-named files. How did you manage to view/rename them? Some kind of Windows plug-in? Or are you on a different OS?

Kopernical, you work fast. As soon as you finished MM4 and said you were going to try 5, I decided to play through it myself (not for speed, just for fun). I just finished, and you have produced another Time Attack!
My thoughts:
-Starting with Gyro Man? Most unexpected. Very artful dodging along the way, especially around those little guns with the shields.
-Once again, I love how you use the Rush Jet. Great Manuevering on the Crystal Man and Napalm Man stages in particular
-I think you could save a little time here and there by using the Charged Arm Cannon more frequently. For example, on Napalm's stage, you had to stop to shoot at the rockets with the Gyro. One charged shot would have destroyed them faster than two Gyros. Still, 'tis but a second or two.
-Great use of the weird Charge Kick on the Wave Man stage, and on Wave Man himself.
-Nice arrow exploit on Gravity Man's stage. I didn't even know you could ride those things. Likewise on Stone Man's stage.
-I don't know how you bitch-slapped the third Protoman boss. Even in slo-motion he beat me like a pinata.
-Excellent work on Wily's first stage. Creative Gravity Hold and precision shooting/jumping/charging against the boss.
-I had no idea the Arrow was effective against the Wily Skull Boss. Big surprise.
Well, it's a tremendous run, but I think I know why you feel something is missing. The last few boss battles just take too long. Not that's entirely your fault, of course, as the opportunities to hit some of these Wily bosses are few and far between.
EDIT: New version submitted, and I like some of the changes. I love abusing the Arrow, it looks cooler (and flies faster) than Rush Jet. But I see what you mean about unnecessary damage, especially in the early Wily levels. Still, faster is faster. You could probably get away with just re-doing the Wily stages.

That sounds nice, but I'm hoping to see something really new from him. Frankly, I'd love see him do Bionic Commando, because I am just not that good at it. ^_^

Great Job! Some of my thoughts:
-Gemini Man's stage was incredible, especially the opening stretch. Those little firebombs drove me crazy! Skipping Protoman was a wonderful surprise; shame about the resulting glitches, but hey, this is for speed, isn't it?
-Needle Man got PWNED! ^_^
-Getting hit by Magnetman so many times didn't look that cool. But I understand that if you don't do that, he jumps around a lot more and time is wasted.
-Hard Man...wow. Those goddamn bees; I hate them so much. You ditched them cold. Great use of Rush Jump too.
-2 points for spinning into Shadow Man's lair. I wonder if it's even possible to use that stupid Top Spin weapon without getting hit? Still, fast is fast.
-Great run on all 4 revisited stages. The Mega Man 2 bosses aren't easy, but you clobbered them.
-Nice "anticipating" running and attacking on Wily's 1st stage. You could've used a little more Rush to expedite that long ladder climb, but no biggie.
-HOT DAMN! Rock Monster got ERASED. And I liked how you stood perfectly still, then jumped, then stood still, then slid, etc. Frankly, it was cooler than Morimoto. There, I said it.
Very nice. Thank you very much for doing this. I saw that re-record number, so I understand how much time and effort this must have taken. Thanks again.

I knew you could jump and hold A, of course! I didn't know it could be done at any time, jumping or not. Because of the "perfect reflexes" in these time attacks, it looks like she is simply walking on air at times.

I wanted to give props to Genisto for his great work on this run. I also have a question. While I think I understand the "double jump" glitch, how were you able to "hover?" By that I mean the many occasions where you run off of an edge but instead of falling you simply float, like a jump. Did you just make a tiny jump or is there a trick to it? Similarly, I am not sure how to jump up vines.

This is a great video. I've been playing these old Mega Man games lately and I had a hell of time playing through parts 3 and 4. Not so much the stages, but the boss battles seemed much harder than the first two installments. But in this clip Kopernical dominates!
Some of my favorite things:
-Unconventional order of play, so he doesn't necessarily fight with the supposed "best" weapon.
-Sparse shooting. This allows me to enjoy the music, and Mega Man games always have good music.
-Uses the "special" weapons frequently and to his advantage. When I play, I'm a big pussy; I always save the big guns for the bosses. Kopernical, like Morimoto, uses them often. Very exciting use of the Ring Boomerang on Dust Man's stage and the Flash Stopper in many, many places. Also, he always has just enough weapon energy to get things done even though he NEVER collects ANY refills.
-The Bright Man stage/boss battle was fantastic. I used to think B-Man was tough. Kopernical makes him look easy.
-Great use of the Rush Jet in many places. Bright Man, Pharaoh Man, Cossack Stage 1 and 2 especially.
-Ring Man got PWNED. ^_^
Great job man. I wish my video was this cool.

Popularity is not the issue here, let's not argue. The point is it's not fun to watch. Mortal Kombat was wildly popular but I don't want to watch somebody play through it.
And for the record, I live in New York. ^_^
