I appreciate that you took the time to work out three completely different strategies. The any% run is really the most interesting out of the 3, though, given how long the delays are between question rounds. Even then, the game's not that interesting... but it is better than I expected, I admit. Maybe it's because Rare did the music. The manipulation looks pretty good. I wish the final obstacle course could be more exciting, but that can't be helped. I'd say this gets a Meh.
Thanks for the real input on the run. If the waiting between questions could be skipped I would like the physical challenge run but it just takes so long.

In the workbench it claims there are three pages for the forum. If you click on page 2 or 3 it claims that "There are no posts in this forum."

Don't say that. Here we have a true competition spirit when every trick is open once the run is submitted. And one always may miss a trick another have used, and learn it only from the latter.
I'm sorry if it wasn't clear. It was supposed to be a joke. I keep forgetting sarcasm doesn't translate to text especially when there are speakers of many language on the site. I was trying to sound whiny. I am looking forward to seeing what you can put forward and what my final result is though. It will be interesting how a relatively simple game can be beat in different ways to save seconds.

Oh come on, can't you let anyone else have a NES record for once? I hope he doesn't realize that there's a 20 minute improvement to The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle...
But its my record. He is trying to steal it from me. Granted I did start it from his initial submission text but that is irrelevant. I am apparently not a rookie by 21 hours so I need to compete with quality TASers. In my case that means upping quantity (see Double Dare, Uncanny X-Men, Terminator 2, many future soon to be rejected TASes) I now know that there's a 20 minute improvement to The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle... though I am sure that was your intention and you just want an improvement made.... EDIT Not that I have any idea of where the improvement is by simply looking at it because you seemed confident in the quality and in neither the walkthroughs, submission discussion or the forum topic I can't find where there would be a huge improvement.

Going to participate. I mean, in teh war. Pity this game can't provide Y subpixel tricks the first version can, because it doesn't alter the Y subpixel while you're on the foor. And there's no X subpixels either. That means it's gonna be all about manipulation and route.
If you want to participate challenge accepted. Just so you know you will want to compare routes with mine and his. He beat me as a whole but he lost out on a bunch of levels (I believe if I left my input the same for the first two levels it would be ahead of his, but it may just be the first level). Also sorry I haven't given an update. This week has been busy for me but I still say Sunday or Monday I should have the improved version up.

That tag sounds like it includes unlicensed games as well, is that the case? If so do games like Action 52 which were not in the "Hacks" section need the label? Here is a list of unlicensed games. Some of which have movies on the site.

Since it doesn't seem like you read my second post, I'll pretend it never existed. Anyway, what are you trying to achieve? Have a Tool-Assisted Speedrun of every NES game published, or a Tool-Assisted Superplay of said games?
My goal would to have a speedrun of every game that either end screen/ending or a final goal to achieve. This is going to require a lot of traditionally "boring" games like Double Dare, Uncanny X-Men or Terminator 2 to have movies created for them but it will also create many more entertaining runs for the site and ultimately complete the goal of beating every game in the fastest way possible. I would like the idea of Tool-Assisted Superplay for the trivial games that could be made entertaining or the games that don't have an ending but that would be a far less reasonable goal. Making a good play around is far more difficult than simply making the fastest way to beat a game (in my opinion) because you can brute force or watch memory to make a game fast but to make it entertaining takes a special eye for what is fun to watch. I do not believe I have that skill so I wouldn't be able to take part in this portion of the NES Completion Challenge, but if others would like it try I would fully support it. Also I don't even care if these runs are published. I would appreciate if the site was more lenient on the uninteresting game play rule but if they want to try and keep the published runs sacred that is for the community to decide. I just want the runs to exist and to be accessible in some way.

No doubt that this run really sucked. It's simply boring. But you definitely shouldn't vote no. Why? I deliberately picked a boring game just to f**k with tasvideos.
Boring video != no vote Entertaininhg video != no vote So, why bother having a vote button? Why not simply accept every run? Oh, btw, some games never end, so good luck trying to speedrun them indefinitely. I'll be waiting.

I honestly can't tell if any of this submission is satire, sarcasm or genuine. However, I feel the need to comment on this one. Sometimes borderline games, boring games, etc. get rejected. But nobody is removing them, or annoyed at their existence. Providing us with a serious submission of a game? That's welcome. I want more submissions! Thanks. You say you want a TAS of every NES game? Bring it on.
I have to say it is a solid blend of all three. The first half of the post is legitimate. Everything up to the question is a real analysis of the game and explained the process I did to TAS the game. I legitimately tried to TAS this to the best of my abilities and excluding a bot this run is as fast as it can get. I enjoyed making this run and even more so the bonus versions included. I liked that I was able to beat all possible records but thought it didn't show enough manipulation so I decided to try to go for a high score run. That added a new aspect because on hard the opponents are "smart" and answer the question in most situations. I liked the run and was going to submit at that point but then realized it was 14 minutes of answering questions and if people were willing to sit through that much I might as well show off the rest of the game. This led to the "Physical Challenge" run posted. This was actually the least fun movie to make because I already had figured out it was possible to manipulate short questions and getting the opponents to double dare. The mini-games are slightly difficult but due to the long time are fully capable of being completed in real time. The impressiveness is completing them in the shortest amount of time, but because it was fully optimized there wasn't really any play around aspects to show and it just ended up being a long movie in my opinion. Starting with the questions is the satire/sarcasm portion of the submission I had come up with when I was going to submit on April 1st. I didn't have time but wasted time writing it so I decided to leave it in. Apparently my satire wasn't explicit enough so here I am being the joke explainer. From "No doubt" to "boring games can't be accepted" is AngerFist's exact post from the Swordless Link run copy+pasted over changing all references to the Japan vs US debate to one about interesting versus boring games. I thought I was clever... Solid chance I was wrong. I do like the idea of finishing off the NES catalog and having a TAS for each game. The bad game choice due to uninteresting gameplay portion is roughly 75% sincere 25% sarcasm. I was the one who started the post a few weeks ago about how I disagreed with the uninteresting gameplay rule but I have since grown to accept that the rule exist for a reason. This doesn't mean I am going to stop TASing uninteresting games. I have sort of lucked out that my past few games have had an audience. I have recently realized the complete NES goal is a much greater task than I ever would have guessed. I did not realize that in Japan it was popular to take a manga and then port it to the NES as a simple text click through but there are a lot. I am sorry if my intentions with this run were unclear. I was just trying to have fun while submitting a legitimate, while most likely going to be rejected, run.

Okay, so I have a complete run of the game finished and just as I predicted I'm 90 seconds ahead of the published run, but I'm not gonna submit it yet because I'm not even close to completely optimized. Here are my major changes thus far
If you want you could post a WIP and we could offer some feedback on the run. I currently have the published run for Gargoyle's Quest II for the NES which is pretty similar so I have some experience. Plus there are other members of the site, like mklip2001, who is extremely knowledgeable about these games and is very good at spotting possible improvements.

There was some kind of controversy? Hooray, I guess! I watched the run, and it straddles the entertainment/boringness line so effectively that I find I must abstain from voting. I did enjoy, however, that the toss-up challenge game that gave me and my sister the absolute most trouble ever is the fastest choice for a TAS.
The gorilla is pretty terrible. I don't know who tested it but you have to hold left for the exact correct number of frames and get the exact right angle or you won't get it correct. Also you have a 5 frame window to get it right.

That was interesting. I vote yes. Not the most exciting 26.5 seconds of my life but it was still entertaining. Also, Angerfist could you please edit your post so it is not one long line of text. I am experiencing a mild first world problem of having to use the horizontal scroll bar to read everyone's comments.

Cool Kirby, I think they have it for GBA, I'll check
They do, but it is a side scroller where all other versions (PC, Gamecube, PS2, XBox) are 3-D roam around games. In addition to that, apparently the PC and console versions have different plots so it wouldn't even be the same game that CoolKirby remembers.

I wasn't offended by the "joke" at all, but I was very glad that it was ended early. I was looking forward to April 1st on this site because I was looking forward to interesting, unconventional, or otherwise considered unworthy movies to be submitted and discussed. Most would be joke submissions that wouldn't be accepted but they would be entertaining and there would be interesting facets to each run. This joke sort of ruined this because it made discussions, in my opinion, extremely difficult to follow. I couldn't tell if OP was posting, if it was the same person over and over, or if it was a group of unique opinions. I know I could click on the profile to find out the individual but with how slow the site was running today (probably in part due to everyone doing this) it made that choice not usable. Once it ended the submissions could be enjoyed much more. Also, unrelated to this post but my favorite aspect of today was the terrible encodes.

I predict this can be improved by 9 further seconds and intend to do so. I haven't actually started yet but simple level by level comparisons gave me this number. This is a nice improvement as certain levels are greatly improved, one boss is almost 8 seconds ahead so now I know to get that boss randomness, but at the same time other levels are beat by a combined 9 seconds as stated above. Now some of that may be lost due to getting proper randomness on bosses and maybe a frame or so on the boxes but I have no qualms saying that there is at least 5-6 seconds guaranteed. Now, I will not be voting as I feel conflicted due to the known improvements. But if people enjoy this run as it is a nice improvement on certain levels and want this to be published I have no qualms as it followed the rules and improved the movie. Though, I predict that by next Sunday my improvement will be submitted.

Wow. Even as a joke submission that was miserable. 1 minute 20 seconds into the encode. That was the max I could make it.

Since this is going to be accepted as a replacement for the 1-Player run I have a question before I move to the 4-Player improvement. Is there any particular movement or moments of entertainment present in the 4-Player run that I definitely move over to this new one? Or from viewing my other TASes do you trust that I can come up with entertainment without simply imitating? (Posting here so that it gets exposure. WIP's will be posted in the NES games section once work begins)

Here is the list of NES (US) games. Here is the list of Famicom (Japan) games. And here is the list of Famicom Disk Games (Japan again). There is a lot of overlap so it is not the easiest thing on earth. As you can see there are hundreds of games that are currently un-TASed for the NES. The bigger question is how many games are left that do not have a TAS that simply won't ever be TASed like sports games, ports on a better console, and games that do not have a final goal. I am in the process of trying to sort all of these out and have the relevant TAS information in the document but at that many games I haven't even finished sorting out the games let alone put any TAS information in.

I spent at least 5 minutes on that game and based on keen observation of the game quality I assume that is twice as long as they did.

This page says that Uncanny X-Men was made by Bothtec or Pixel.
Neither the manual nor the box-art implies that it was made by anyone other than LJN. The NesCartDB says it was developed by Atlus but no website about Atlus claims that game as their own. Regardless that was just an example as there are other games by them that no one else claims at all. I was mainly trying to show off my old movie.

So, was it common practice for LJN to grab a license, throw together something that ranged from awful to passable yet generic, and then hire on a sound programmer that knew what he was doing? The music and sounds are almost always the best parts of their games.
So who made LJN's games? NOT LJN. They are a Publisher, not a developer. Their games were developed by Atlus, Rare, Sanritsu, Beam Software, Software Creations, Sculptured Software, and a few other companies. Some of those companies simply had really good musicians. For example, Rare had David Wise, and Sculptured Software had Tim Follin. Trivia: Sculptured Software's sound engine ended up in Action 52.
They did in fact make a few games. For example "Uncanny X-Men" (plug for my boring awesome rejected movie, I was robbed) was developed and published by them (though that is the only game that they developed that has been submitted here or I even recognize the name of). This one was actually made by Rare. Though the point still stands that they published a ton of terrible movie ports.

Would using three players help in any way? The lead character could scroll the screen at constant pace while the other two would pick up bones with minimal interruption.
I am not sure. It would be helpful to have the third scrolling as he would never have to stop. The major issue I see with it is that in a lot of scenes in this game lag started popping up if I didn't kill off an enemy. This means that an extra character would probably push it over into the six object limit a lot more frequently so the lag could cancel out the increase. I will admit I haven't actually tested (as to test I would need to test quite a bit of the game) but I feel two player would be optimal.
