I just wonder what policy there should be for games that need to be installed before playing. I am talking of installations that takes a noticeable amount of time. Things like copying files from multiple floppies to copying a few cds worth of content.

Sounds like it could be worth watching. Encode requested.

I am missing the ladder glitches. This game is supposed to have them, right? Also, the run uses the Japanese version where the original game has an English version. As for the hack, yeah, I don't see anything interesting here. And what's with the stars in the middle of the day and the level with ever changing palette?

If I understand it correctly the counter starts overwriting the flags for collected crystals.
But how? It's just a number, it's not like it's a string that is too long for a string buffer.

I understand it better now, but I still don't get why the high numbers give the results they do. Do they overflow and read random data? It is a little too predictable for that to be likely.

I'd love to hear how the heck they managed to screw up like this. What exactly is happening? Full details please!

Looks like he put them into a separate fork, you will have to download them separately I suppose. Edit: I created a custom dos boot disk that should work with anything. It loads mouse and cd drivers and properly sets up the environment. It is memory optimized and leaves plenty of conventional memory so that anything will work. Unless you are framewhoring, it should be a one size fits everyone. And for the lazy, I also made a hd image with some stuff that may or may not run.

If you have a game that needs the FPU, you must load the FPU module manually. Similarly, the SoundCard module is not loaded by default either. Use this string in the assemble window to load them: org.jpc.modules.BasicFPU,org.jpc.modules.SoundCard

Correct, it is not for verification. However, many people (myself included) doesn't want to bother with running the emulator themself. They instead watch the encode.

I forgot to mention a tiny little thing, encoders will have a new challenge. You see, DOS games are free to change video mode, so the resolution (and aspect ratio in theory) can change during the movie. Oh, and there should probably be some sort of optimization for the text mode screens, lossy encodings really suck for text.

Good news everyone, Ilari has made a rerecording fork of JPC so that we can TAS DOS games. It already does several fun games, with more as he figures out wtf is wrong with the emulation. Here are some that seems to work:
  • Jetpack
  • God of thunder
  • Epic pinball
  • Bio Menance
  • Blake Stone: Aliens Of Gold
  • Mega man x
  • Charlie the duck
  • Ducks
  • Theme Park
One issue that he has right now is how to do the GUI for mouse entry. If you have any ideas on how to do it, feel free to say so here.

I see no reason not to accept game custom movie formats, providing that the movie actually is tool assisted. More or less no such game has savestates in addition to movie recording.

I don't do romhacking, but I suppose that I would do it the same way as I usually do, find the entry point and go from there.

Long story short: we need frameadvance and rerecording. Simple screen capture applications does not even ensure that we wont miss drawn frames.

Each level is like 5 screens big, except for those with text in the background, those are just long walking corridors with nothing to do in. Voting no due to levels being total cakewalk and completely uninteresting.

While I agree with the picture idea, the ability to get even the color right makes this very good, yes voted.

I say, make a poll and see if people care about the impossibilities and the "cheating" or if they just enjoy what we have been doing. My opinion is clear, there is no need to shut the site down. We are going to need to redefine the rules, that much is clear. But shutting down the site violates the spirit of finding a way to do something even when it seems impossible. So what if things are idealistic? Physics problems are nearly always assuming that there is no friction and so on. Yes, the timing is not ideal in real life. So what? I say, keep using ideal components instead of trying to emulate reality. Emulate the intent and design of the systems, not the implementation. If things are not defined clearly, we can define things ourselves. Set anything uninitialized to zero, it is an ideal memory that is completely fresh. It doesn't decay over time, it does not need to be refreshed and so on. It is an ideal model of memory.

One vote for phoenix wright. It's that time of the year and I'd love to see the badger solved on the first attempt.

The most sensible solution is to just include the save the bios generates.
