I'm impressed that the game can be beaten this quickly. Despite only being 4 levels, this game is pretty hard. Voted Yes.

Some interesting glitchiness. Voted Yes. I'd prefer that the warped run get the star because it's shorter. 19 minutes of this game gets a bit boring.

Holy crap! Awesome job. You should add "plays with death" to the description. You just about bought the farm many times. Easy Yes vote.

That was pretty good for what it was. I liked the suicide ending. As others have noted, I much prefer the warpless run, which is absolutely packed with amazing feats. Still, it's interesting that a game that long can be beaten this quickly. Voting Yes.

I'm surprised that that much time can still be saved in this game. Awesome boss ownage! It would have been nice if the Ninja would have done something more interesting than just jump back and forth after boss fights, but I can live with that. Yes vote.

Just for a change of pace, I think I'll make a comment that is actually about this run. Much better camera work compared to the currently published run. It was very easy to follow what was going on, and you got rid of that annoying rapid camera change thing. The long jumps in Bowser 3 were really nice to watch. The extreme closeup during Bowser 2 lasted a little longer than I'd like, and I didn't really care for the bit where the camera followed Mario during his intentional damage when he jumped into the lava. First person might have worked if it hadn't happened so quickly (was a bit hard to follow). If Mario really must jump in the lava, it would probably have looked better from a distance. Anyway, that's just an aesthetic thing, and other those short bits of Bowser 2, I thought the camera work was very nice. It was also technically well done, and it's worth a Yes vote. The any% run is getting pretty short, though. It would be nice to see another 120 star run. This is an amazing game, and still great fun to watch after 11 years.

I loved this game in the arcade. This is one of the most fun to play games ever, but it's not so great to watch (slot machine... ugh). The music in levels 41-49 really takes me back though. The Genesis version looks much, much better. I would rather see a Genesis run. Still, good enough for a Yes vote.

Short and sweet. Exactly what a TAS should be. Voting Yes.

The camera work was really lousy in the beginning. The clicky inny-outty thing is annoying, which didn't bode well. The camera follows Mario really close, which makes it hard to tell what's going on and enjoy what Mario is doing. In Bowser 1, the camera inexplicably cuts away from Bowser and zooms in on Mario just as Bowser touches the bomb, so we don't get to see him getting launched backwards off of it, which would have been more entertaining. By this point I expected the rest of the video to be crap. Then it turned around. The camera for the Bowser 2 fight finally zoomed out enough to see what was going on, and Mario got some huge air on those two jumps! Bowser 3 fight looked really efficient, exactly what a TAS should be. I definitely liked the second half of the movie, but I liked all of the last movie. I couldn't really notice the 2 seconds of time saved, but I could certainly notice how annoying the camera was in the first half. As a whole I didn't quite enjoy it enough to vote Yes to it, but I give it a solid Meh. Kind of a Meh+.

I use the same ROM, same Plugins, set the movie to Read Only, and it desyncs the second the game starts. I'm tired of screwing around with the settings. Looks like we're in the same boat.

I didn't want to say anything because it's kind of like replying to all in order to tell everyone to stop replying to all, but it hasn't stopped yet. Xkeeper stated an opinion, which he is entitled to do. You don't have to agree with his opinion, and he doesn't have to agree with yours. Just state your own opinion and stop caring about what everyone else thinks. I have disagreed with the majority on a number of occasions, and I plan to disagree again in the future. I'm usually the one who complains about the camera work in SM64 runs, but the camera work was really good this time. I didn't see this coming. You guys beat the game really fast, and made it look good, too. Easy Yes vote. I just wish I had seen this sooner, but it's never too late to say "good job". :) P.S. This is almost a "Bowser-only" run. Three Bowser fights, and Bowser's sub. All three of the fights were excellent, and the camera captured all of the action in an almost Matrix-like way. The only thought that occurred to me while watching Mario fly through the basement door was, "can he land inside the entrance to Bowser 2 and skip DDD?" I'm guessing that's a no, or this would have been a 0 star run.

I couldn't help but laugh when I heard about it, mostly because of Ralph's classic Get Well card to Miss Hoover. I was hoping someone else would get a laugh out of it, too.

Actually, I'm from Canada, but I still think it's the polite thing to do. I put very special effort into the card, and I think most people will enjoy it.

The White House has recently revealed that President Bush was treated for Lyme disease in 2006. http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/08/08/bush.health/index.html I feel bad about not sending him a card sooner, but I want to encourage everyone to send him your best wishes. I put a lot of thought into the card I made for him, so feel free to send him the Get Well Soon card that I drew for him. I've created a web page with a link to the card and President Bush's email address at http://www.classicdosgames.com/special/getwell.html. Please personalize your email to express how you feel.

I just watched the AVI. The MMX1 and 2 run is one of my favorites. I can watch both games at once and easily see that Mega Man is doing the same things in both games. This quad game run is another story. I can't watch all four games at once, so I have to pick whether I want to watch the top, bottom, left or right two games. Now that there are four games, at any given time Mega Man may be facing left in the top two games and right in the bottom two, so it's hard to tell that they're even being played from the same FCM. They no longer synch in a way that makes it obvious, so I have to take it on faith. I find that I just can't watch and enjoy this many games at once. It's an astounding technical accomplishment, but I can't say that I find it entertaining. Sorry. I think I'll sit this vote out.

Holy crap! I'm half way through, but I had to stop. You just BLJ'd to the island in Rainbow Ride. This can now be considered a CCC-less star! Did I miss that in the other thread? I haven't been following it because I finished my non-assisted CCC (and two kinds of CC) quest, so this is huge news to me.

FODA picked his camera angles very carefully. Some of the best moments were when he put the camera down somewhere shortly before Mario pulled off some incredibly ridiculous stunt. I didn't complain about the camera angles this time around because they were *so* much better than AKA and Rikku's first runs. In the second published 16 star run, the camera followed Mario so closely that some of the stars (Bobomb Battlefield) gave me a headache. Too much motion is a bad thing. You can't watch a whole movie where the camera is constantly swinging around. It needs to zoom out so that you can see the action, and it should stop and focus on the critical parts. Rikku was only going for speed at first, but his recent 120 star run was pretty good by the end. I think everyone is slowly getting better at the art of film making in N64 TASes. Hopefully the camera work will evolve and mature with each new run. As for how FODA did it so well in his very first N64 TAS, I guess spending something like a year making it had something to do with it.

That's just a black room of death, right? From what I understand, MIPS can be used to move around in the basement, but you can't take him upstairs or outside because it won't load the area unless you open the door.

Hmm. I got a mention. Having an opinion finally paid off! I already said most of what I had to say in the WIP thread, but I would like to say that I thought it was pretty cool that Mario released the stage star while he was jumping toward the 100 coin star in Rainbow Ride. Of all of the negatives regarding entertainment that I wrote about the run, some were probably unavoidable because you changed the route in order to save time, and others were just camera choices. The unnecessary damage in Rainbow Ride really bothers me, though. That just isn't kosher. I suppose I can't vote No to the entire salad just because there are a few bacon bits in it. I'll pick them out and vote Yes anyway. Even though I've effectively voted for the obsoletion of FODA's run, I just want to say that FODA made an absolute masterpiece. It is a work of art. Camera angles and style were considered in every single frame. This run gets better looking in the later levels, but I think we'll all consider FODA's run as the standard to which all future runs will be compared to for entertainment value. Were you able to use the hyper pole-climbing glitch in Bowser 2 that AKA uses in his run?

Wow, cool glitch. I guess it's fun to fight about things, so I'll respond to the other conversation. I seem to recall a time when someone made a faster SMB run, and then there was a second run that used the new trick to achieve an identical time, but otherwise used the route from the previous movie, which was more entertaining and collected more coins, or something. In other words, it was exactly the same length, but it was more entertaining. So I don't see why someone couldn't successfully submit a run for any game, with an identical time, that was more entertaining. But, really, Jweb beat me to it. Why bother arguing about it (other than to have something to argue about)? Everyone is free to submit anything they want. If you don't like what they submit, vote No to it.

Very nice. I wasn't expecting this. The camera work was great throughout. The entire Bowser 3 stage is incredible. Mario gets embedded in slopes in more locations, and the long jumping along the edge of the platforms in the moving platform section is awesome. The Bowser fight was incredible! It looked like you grabbed Bowser's tail while he was still in the air! Voting Yes due to all-around awesomeness. The only question I had was about Lil Penguin Lost, where you fell instead of sliding down the wall like Rikku does in his 120 star WIP.

I haven't had any comments because my primary computer broke down in January and the backup wasn't really suitable for N64 emulation. But now I've built myself a new computer with a GeForce 8500GT OC, and I've cranked up the AF to 16 and the AA to 8, grabbed a snack and watched the WIP. The good is obvious, so I hope you'll forgive me for focusing on the bad. Some of it is due to route changes in order to reduce time, and the rest is artistic style. Whomp's Fortress: I was really disappointed that the 100 coin run didn't generate both stars at the same time. FODA's 100 coin run was classic: during the star animation for the first star, one of the sliding block guys pushed Mario off of the ledge! The camera stayed with the star, so Mario got a head start on the other one. That was truly cool. Cool, Cool Mountain: The end of the penguin race is way less entertaining. FODA's original WIP had Mario facing the penguin, which could be seen from a distance - barreling down on him, which I thought was brilliant. The final version had the penguin approach from the side, so it lost the cool factor from seeing him coming, but it was still pretty funny that it nailed him from out of the blue. This time Mario just kind of gets nudged out of the way. There's no suspense or flair. It's a small thing to nitpick, but TASing is about perfectionism, so it's easy to get hung up on artistic "perfection" as well as technical perfection. Bowser fights: The rapid camera switching at the end of the Bowser fights is my biggest complaint. It was mildly irritating in Bowser 1, but in Bowser 2 it was unbearable. You can't see a thing while that's happening. The end of B2 is so distracting that it causes me to have evil thoughts. I've wished Mario harm... Bowser 2: I guess the 1-up mushroom didn't appear at the top of the first pole because you jumped off the pole at a lower point. Watching the mushroom chase Mario through the level, and finally sneak up and catch him during his star animation, was one of the funniest things in FODA's run. I miss that. Rainbow Ride: Taking unnecessary damage is a big no-no with me. Getting zapped and taking falling damage during the carpet ride looks really unprofessional. I don't like seeing avoidable damage in a TAS. In general, I'm a fan of secondary goals. It looked like you avoided one of the 1-up mushrooms when you were Koopa shell surfing over an arch in Lethal Lava Land, but it didn't look like it saved any time. I could be wrong: maybe Mario needed to jump to gain speed. You definitely had time to collect a 1-up mushroom during the carpet ride in Rainbow Ride. If it doesn't cost any time, I'd like to see Mario finish with as many lives as possible. In addition to beating Morimoto's time, one of the selling points for the run that obsoleted his famous SM3 run was that Mario collected more coins and scored more points. Those are irrelevant in SM64, but the lives are still a measure of how much ass you're kicking. To beat the game really fast, and collect a lot of lives along the way, rubs it in even harder and makes the run even more impressive. Is one extra mushroom a big deal? No, but it shows off your mastery of the game. Some have voiced support, but I don't really like the fact that the stars are collected in order. I liked trying to guess - and often being wrong - which star FODA was going for. It looks bad to have all of the criticism in one post like this, but I'm late to the party. I don't have a lot to add to the kudos, though I would like to say that the 100 coin star in Hazy Maze Cave is absolutely incredible. Awesome job, man. Also, the camera work and style choices in the last few levels have been anywhere from good to excellent, so I'm certainly not knocking the camera work in the whole run. There were just a few things that jumped out, so I wrote them down. Good luck in the final stars, and lay off the rapid camera switching when you beat Bowser 3.
