Yeah, I hate having to go to the movies page to compare times. It just takes a few seconds to include it in the submission text, and I consider it a courtesy.

No offense, AKA, but the camera angles are atrocious. Following closely behind Mario in Bob-omb Battlefield, and upon jumping into Hazy Maze Cave, and at the last second before Mario touches numerous stars, literally gives me a headache. The other problem is that you have less sense of distance and speed because the close-up cuts out the world around Mario and eliminates points of reference. Doing Bowser 1 as the first star in your first run was shocking and radical. Even though you didn't enter through the door, doing Bowser 1 after other stars destroyed the novelty of that accomplishment. 7 seconds is a fabulous improvement, but between the new star order, and the motion sickness, I spent the first half of this movie deciding whether I was voting No or Meh. The second half got a lot better. The camera angles in Board Bowser's Sub were excellent. The need to reduce lag forced the camera to keep a reasonable distance and angle. The Bowser fights were excellent (other than the extreme close-up during the second toss in Bowser 3), and watching Mario slide up slopes on his belly was hilarious. After seeing that, I could no longer vote No, but I still don't think I can vote Yes to a movie that makes me sick. I think I have to vote Meh on this one.

For those using GoodGen 3.00, the ROM to use for this movie is Sonic The Hedgehog (W) (REV00). (REV01) will desync. Awesome movie. I remember how long it was before there was a really good Sonic 1 movie. It's great to see it played really well.

I just watched the new WIP. What I'm seeing is that Mario sometimes adjusts his course when he's swimming long distances. He changes course a bit before getting red coin #7 in the secret aquarium, and again before collecting the star. He does it again on his way to the eel in Can the Eel Come Out and Play? The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. If Mario needs a course correction, it should be corrected back to the beginning. I thought getting Blast to the Stone Pillar coinless was a nice touch. The WIP is definitely faster and more enjoyable than the existing run. With regards to making it different from FODA's run, I know everyone wants to see something different, but FODA's run was incredible. There were a few places where FODA had the camera angle a certain way in the WIP, then changed it in the final version (such as getting hit by the penguin from the side instead of straight on, on the slide), which I thought made it less surprising or interesting than before, but otherwise, if this run looks like FODA's run, optimized, I would give it an Oscar.

FODA's run is certainly improvable, frame-wise, but it will be hard to beat the "wow" factor of his run. FODA is a master of the camera angle. I've watched your JRB WIP, Rikku, and you're off to a great start.

The published run has been misspelled as "Muttant Apocalypse".

I bought an N64 the day it came out, and my friend and I played Super Mario 64 after school every day until we had 120 stars. Mario 64 was the greatest game ever. Then Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire was the greatest game ever (at least, when we were playing the Battle of Hoth it was). Then... Turok. This game blew us away. We were shooting dinosaurs with explosive bullets. We were hacking people up with a knife. Watching this game is a blast. I was a bit concerned that the strafing would ruin this run. I wanted to see Turok run head first through the levels and take out hundreds of guys along the way. My computer that has my emulation stuff is offline while it waits for an upgrade, but I got to watch mmbossman's YouTube video, and I liked what I saw. It was hyper fast, and it was fun watching the enemies getting their throats slit as Turok passes by. I look forward to watching nfq's full run when I get my computer back up and running, but I just want to say that (along with an insanely kick ass destruction of Blast Corps, and Super Mario 64, which is already done), Turok is one of the games that is at the top of my N64 wish list. Good luck on the rest of the run, and thanks for doing this.

Entertainment is subjective. I think some of the runs on this site are awful, but the majority voted against me. I don't think that a run should ever be published for entertainment alone. Publishing a movie that is more interesting, yet slower than the existing run wouldn't make much sense. Start with a quantifiable goal, like fastest time or highest score, and try to make it entertaining. The majority may decide that it's not entertaining enough, but it will certainly never be published without breaking the record on the quantifiable, indisputable goal that you selected.

Just out of curiousity, does Mario's stars-out-the-butt triple jump actually help? For the purposes of setting a record on individual levels, are there any that could be done faster after getting 120 stars?

Yeah, I figured that one out while trying to get to the top of the castle after I got 120 stars in 1996. I didn't know at the time that you could get to the roof with 0 stars. Mario looks pretty funny standing at the top of the tower, inside of the flag. I like the name "Black Room of Death", but it's not really death since you can get out.

Nice improvement of the 16 star run, Rikku. Are you planning to try the 120 star run?

So, the mysterious TASer from YouTube posts his first submission and beats one of the most prestigious runs on the site. Very well done! I love the camera angle at the end of the tunnel in DDD. The texture of the rock passing above Mario was really nice. Loved the camera work as Mario entered the funnel before Bowser 2. At the end of the input, the game pauses for me. Mario doesn't collect the star until I press the Start button on my controller. Is that just me, or does that need to be fixed? Yes vote anyway.

Having the camera above Mario when he shot out of the cannon in RR was brilliant. Seeing the level, and open sky, pass beneath him is so awesome that it's a shame that it's so brief.

S3&K was amazing and definitely causes brain damage, but this is probably my favorite TAS ever. Not only would I give it a star, but I would give FODA an Oscar for best director.

I disagree with that statement I personally beleve that most of the time I was frame precise, but thats not the main problem, the main problem is knowing whats the best strategy to use as there is literally hundreds if not thousands of ways to achive the same goal, I mostly go by my own imagination rather that brute forcing every possible move in as opposed to a 2D game, which is why they have higher re-record rate per frame since as I just mentioned they try to optimize every frame as opposed to optimizing every movement, I know they sound simalar but there quite different in concept. It could and will most likely take another 4-6 movies till we get something which is most likely perfect. (refering to 16 star run)
I wasn't saying that the strategy isn't improvable. I was saying that, so far, no one is aware of a superior strategy. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, but my impression is that, while your 16 star run was x frames faster in some places, I don't think you exposed any major flaws in FODA's strategy. There could very well be ways to reduce the time of the 120 star run by several seconds per star, but I don't think anything has been discovered that should prevent this run from being published, or suggests that a significantly better run is just around the corner. With regard to the suggestion that the 16 star run gets a star and links to the 120 star run, I guess it's a matter of whether we want to suggest to people that the 16 star run is the run they should start with, and the 120 star may be of interest to them if they happen to enjoy the 16 star run. I see no reason not to put it on the same page as the rest of the star runs, to acknowledge that it is equally deserving of being watched first, if they have the time. Also, with no disrespect to AKA, I feel that FODA's run is more artistic. I got a good laugh out of Mario's antics during the carpet ride, which included everything from incredible wall jumps to Mario crawling around like a baby. In Bowser 3, Mario fools around on the pieces of floor as they fall. Little things like that just make my day. This run is absolutely a masterpiece. And that's the last thing I'm going to say in this thread about the star.

Those are good points, moozooh, but I see no reason why the any% and the 100% runs can't both have a star. They both will shock and amaze newcomers, and there are a lot of cool things in the 120 star run that aren't in the 16 star run. Recommend them both and let the viewer decide how much time they want to spend.

Thank you for the save states, Spezzafer. This run is easily entertaining enough to watch from beginning to end, but I've seen most of it dozens of times thanks to the WIPs. Being able to jump to a specific course is fantastic. And yes, this run is improvable. BLJing into some of the rooms on the first floor is faster than waiting for the unlock animation, so there's a couple of seconds. In most cases, mere frames can be saved. At least for now, the improvements relate to frame precision rather than improvable strategy. FODA does a tremendous job with the camera in this run and uses it to add surprise, or to make the ordinary or mundane look exciting. If someone starts now, they may be able to shave several seconds off of this time, but good luck making it more entertaining. This is star material all the way.

For future reference, Rikku, if you ever make a TAS that's faster than anything we have here, please submit it! We would have loved to have seen the .m64 file. You did a really great job.

So, the day has finally come! I thought we would have to wait a lot longer than this to get a new 16 star run. I've been following the WIPs since the beginning, but I just watched this from beginning to end and it is truly awesome. I love the running along the edge of the lava pit in Bowser 2, and jumping over Bowser's head in Bowser 3. Excellent job. Easy Yes vote.

Hmm. Using the TAS plugin fixed it. I've never had an input plugin cause desynch in movies before (I usually leave the Adaptoid plugin on all the time because I like to use a real N64 controller). I wonder what that plugin is doing that the others don't do. Excellent first world. There was enough variety that the double flame didn't get old, but it might eventually if it's used in every single level. I would definitely watch this. I just wish I had a choice about the input plugin.

There is no emulator that runs Kirby very well, as far as I'm concerned. It's frustrating to not be able to tell how much health you have, and what powers Kirby is carrying. According to GoodN64, there is only one version of the US ROM, and I'm using the same ROM you are. I'd be surprised if the problem was the input plugin. I'd use the TAS plugin if I knew where to get it from. I've never seen or heard of it before.
