Close. 60 being a larger number than 50, it's NTSC that has 20% more inputs per second.

no, unprofessional in conduct. I've noticed that the two main N64 topics- this one and OoT- have the greatest amount of straying from the run itself to bickering amongst the posters about trite subjects. But I digress.
I also apologize. The wampa thing was a lot funnier when I was sleep deprived. I really do like Monty Python, though. As for straying from the run, this thread has 86 pages and is almost 2 years old. There have been times when there have been no new WIPs for months. I can only plead insanity. Sometimes it just feels right to make a joke, though I hope that none of my jokes have been at anyone's expense. After this many months and this many pages, I think we've done a pretty good job of keeping the thread on track. If I have been rude and arrogant (and I have been), I apologize. At the same time, I'm proud that this is one of the friendliest and most flame-free communities on the net.

Sorry, I thought that was pretty funny. Luke Skywalker fought a Wampa in The Empire Strikes Back. In the "funny credits" for Star Wars: SOTE, they parody the closing credits of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. "A wampa bit my sister once. Really. It was pining for the fjords." </geek mode> I assume that's Whomp's Fortress?

Are you sure you mean SMS, because Fantasy Zone looked awful on the SMS. It was amazing on TurboGrafx 16. Edit: Oh, you said Fantasy Zone II. I didn't play that on NES.

However, i suspect most would leave the 16-star run to FODA, although there is no such thing in this site as 'reserving' games it seems right to do so in this situation out of respect. The differences are directly out of his TAS.
Unless a superior run is already in progress, I don't see the point in waiting. It's pointless to publish a movie that's going to be obsoleted in a day or two, but I don't see the need to wait if it's still going to be a while. Unless FODA says otherwise, a new 16 star run isn't coming until the 120 star run is finished, and it still has several levels to go.

Wow! I've been waiting for a new Kirby run for a long time (a non-Famtasia movie!), but I didn't think it would be that much faster. In retrospect, UFO seems obvious. Wheel looks fast, but it's useless in the vertical stages. Unfortunately, UFO is a little TOO good. The only downside to this movie was that it was a bit boring to see Kirby use the same power for so much of the game. The boss fights were incredible. You can beat the Sun and Moon in two hits? It was amazing to see the bosses get their asses kicked so quickly. A Yes vote for sure. I just realized something. All the pastel levels really remind me of Fantasy Zone.

It's true that it's a merger of the techniques in the two videos (though the camera choices aren't as good as FODA's), but it is an improvement to the existing run. If this was submitted, I would give it a Yes vote. Certainly the best (and possibly the only) TAS I've ever seen that wasn't from this site.

I saw your WIP of the first two levels and thought it was off to a good start. I wasn't expecting to see a completed run so quickly! Very well done. I totally got my butt kicked by this game years ago, so this is my first time seeing it beaten. Yes vote. BTW, I think you mean "Suggested frames." "Suggestive frames" implies that something sexually suggestive occurs on those frames.

You can also see an example of that by flying into the big tower of the castle and ending up behind the front door...
Yes, I've done that. It's obvious that there is an area behind the door that isn't the loading point, but I didn't know that Mario couldn't activate the loading point by passing through the door. I guess the animation where Mario takes the handle and opens the door is what causes the next level to load, rather than being physically inside the door. That makes sense.

Oh, you're saying that the loading point doesn't activate unless the door opens. Mario can't simply touch the loading point on the other side.

I've always wondered (this regards mostly to the 16 star run) that if you could back long jump on the outside of the castle and gain enough velocity to run like hell into the door submerged by water and gain access to the downstairs of the castle much earlier? Or would you be stopped by the water instantly when you touch it (even at a high velocity)?
FODA wrote:
that door is a loading point, can't do that.
A loading point to get into the basement? In theory you could get into the basement without beating Bowser 1. You would still have to get 15 stars to make MIPS appear, but if there are 15 stars in the basement that are faster than collecting 8+ stars on the main level and beating Bowser 1, it might save some time on the 16 star run. That's assuming that there was a way to aim yourself at the door in the moat.

btw, hopper, i'm 26. Pressing "A" while with the wing cap doesn't do something visually obvious at first sight. So, if i press a button and it doesn't have any instantaneous effect, i assume it does nothing, unless i'm told otherwise. like i said, i've read all the signs in the game, and i don't recall anything about this...
I remember reading that you were new to the game when you started speed running it. I bought an N64 and SM64 the day it came out, invited a friend over, and we played for hours after school every day. I didn't even have internet access back then, so the only way to learn things was to try EVERYTHING. The cape in Super Mario World allows you to slow your descent when you press A, which is probably why it didn't come as much of a surprise when it worked in SM64. I remember discovering it by accident during the course of play and just thinking, "Neat. That's helpful." After all, those wings on his head ought to do something when he's not flying. I'm not surprised that you didn't discover it, though, since you're speed running. It only takes a second to realize that you're not falling at the normal speed, but you definitely wouldn't notice while playing with frame advance or extreme slowdown.

you people are weird. of course the wing cap can run out in the air. the level music resumes and you fall down as if from a jump
Yup, the cap disappears, you lose forward momentum, and you fall from the sky. You still have control, though, so you can ground pound before you hit the ground. Used to happen to me when I was trying to get all of the coins in Bob-Omb Battlefield after launching out of the cannon on the floating island. That, or trying to get the red coins in the Wing Cap Switch Palace after landing. You can take off from the ground and still get the final two red coins if you miss them.

I'm shaking my head at this conversation. I know I shouldn't. I may be older than some of you (having passed the quarter century mark), and I played this game the day it came out, so this is all old news to me. There's no "kicking the Bob-omb trick". Like most enemies in the game, Bob-ombs can be kicked. It's just something you figure out when you play the game, which has widely been used since 1996. When Mario jumps while wearing the Wing Cap, for instance, off the mountain in Bob-omb Battlefield, you fall more slowly if you hold A. I'm pretty sure that most of us know that; FODA is talking about something else. Other practical uses of pressing A: when staring into the ceiling to enter the Wing Cap Switch Palace, you can press A to return to the original camera view and walk around as the castle fades out. A is a very useful button. Try pressing buttons you wouldn't normally press in every situation and you'll learn all kinds of things that us old fogeys have already forgotten. Until next time, this is Captain Obvious signing off!

You're supposed to press a switch behind the area where you fight the pirahna plants (for Star #1) to create a bridge to the island.

That's what I was talking about. The odds are high that two people will have the same birthday, but the odds that someone will have your birthday are exactly what one would expect. Statistically speaking, it should be a long time before someone reveals him or herself to be my birthday buddy.

Interesting paradox. So far, no one shares a birthday with me. What are the odds of that? Edit: My birthday isn't February 29. That would significantly alter the odds.

I've been wall jumping to skip huge sections of TTC for ages. I bought SM64DS a few months ago and got even better at it. FODA definitely would have figured out how to quickly get to the top. That level's going to be amazing.

FODA has indicated that he will likely create a new 16 star run when he's done the 120 star run.

In the first Bowser battle could you have grabbed the key quicker? (like you did in the second.)
Rest assured, FODA got the key as soon as it was gettable. In the first fight, Mario walks really close to the camera and then slides into the key. In the second fight, it looks faster because Mario jumps into Bowser's mouth and is already standing inside the key when it lands. It bounces a bit before you can actually grab it.

That was a fun improvement to HMC. Entering the hazy maze cave mid-way through was definitely surprising. You added a lot more acrobatics to the 8 red coin star. It seemed like the camera angle changed more frequently in the new run, which was a bit distracting. You seemed to be making a point of showing that the metal cap switch wasn't activated yet by swinging the camera to show the metal cap box as soon as the level started. It was still fun to watch, but I like the camera to stay reasonably still so that I can focus on Mario and not the background changes when the camera swings around. WDW was awesome. All these years and I didn't know about the teleport to the cannon! Jumping all the way to the star at the top of the town was awesome, and the 100 coin run was possibly my favorite star yet. The only time it ever slowed down was to grab and throw the Chuckya. Terrific stuff.

Holy crap, I can't believe I forgot to follow this thread! I got caught up in FODA's 120 star run and haven't checked your progress for months. I just watched the 3rd teaser, and it's utterly awesome. I just have to say that a lot of people sit around and come up with crazy things that you could theoretically do; things that would be harder than even a 100% run. I can imagine someone getting off to a great start and never finishing. I can imagine someone doing it well enough to be impressive, but not perfect. To see this run created with a level of perfection normally reserved for traditional any% or 100% runs absolutely floors me. The amount of planning it must have taken to figure out when it was possible to fight Ridley must have been extreme: clearly this goes beyond "how many missiles do I need?" You've set out to do something that no one else would try, then attempted to do it as well or better than any run that has ever been recorded before. I don't know if you're crazy or a genius. Either way, keep doing what you're doing.
