Wow. Using Kirby sure sped up the Metal Mario fight. Are you considering a run with Kirby?

There are limits to hyperbole. I don't believe it's right to compare modern politicians to Hitler. That's disrespectful to the 12 million people who died in the Holocaust, and the tens of millions who died on both sides in the war. I certainly don't believe it's right to compare an assumption about a "Meh" vote with centuries of suffering under slavery. The n-word carries with it centuries of hate and discrimination, and I don't think it should be used lightly.

Then it would be a question of how far up the slide you have to get in order to trigger the star. Can you just walk out the door again, or do you have to get all the way to the top of the slide? Getting the whole way up without touching a coin would be oh so much fun. There are a couple of drops, too. Is it even possible to jump high enough to make it the whole way back up? If it is, then you can get both stars. If not, maybe just the one for getting to the bottom, or maybe neither.

Yeah, seen them both. Voting No for at least the fact that there is now a much faster run. (Also, get rid of that ROM advertisement in your zip file) But here's a hint to anyone who may wish to make a TAS of this game: there's a Gameboy Color version of this game. Use Tetris DX so the game will be a bit more interesting to watch.

Um, hey. Sorry, I really don't want there to be a fight, but I have to say that I don't think we should be using the n-word here.

BTW, if anyone is using the latest version of GoodGen for ROM testing (GoodGen 2.05), the correct ROM appears to be "Sonic The Hedgehog (W) (REV 00) [!]". (REV 01) desyncs for me. Edit: And now I've seen the whole thing. Holy awesome! That movie got better as it went. Usually the later levels of Sonic games aren't that great to watch. You totally owned Green Hill 3 and Star Light 2. Awesome boss battle in Star Light 3. Amazing screen scrolling in Scrap Brain 1. Obvious Yes vote. I wasn't sure if I was going to be wowed enough to recommend a star, but the last few levels made up my mind. I think this is star material.

Well, those guys put me to shame. I only have 110 NES games + Game Genie + Cleaning Kit.

Cool. I would play that it if it was translated into English, or if the Matrix could load Japanese into my brain.

I'm not using slowdown, re-recording, etc. I'm only using an emulator because I'm too lazy to dust off my N64. I mentioned the attempt in response to the whole "experienced speedrunner" thing as an example of people doing their own thing; and in the hope that someone could tell me how many stars are possible so that I would know what I was aiming for. That question seems to be answered now, and I would hate for the subject to overshadow the actual TAS discussion (meaning that I'll shut up now, other than to say that I really don't think even frame advance is going to allow me to go down that chimney without touching the coins).

Oh... I thought this was for no coins on the coin total sheet, so special levels didn't count.
That's the way I was playing it, but these guys have a different standard. They say that 77 stars can be collected without touching a coin anywhere, so there are 85 stars that can be collected without putting a coin on the score sheet out of a maximum possible 90. That's crazy. I can easily identify 3 that simply can't be collected without touching a coin (5 secrets in Course 1, both stars for sliding in Course 4). I guess I'll find out where the other 2 are.

Woops, forgot about Wing Mario Over the Rainbow. So I'm at 68. Yeesh. I think I need to find a new hobby.

Awesome. Either I'm almost done, or I'm about to set a record! I haven't put a lot of thought into which of the remaining stars can be collected, but I know that I could get one more star in Course 1 if I could get that stupid Bob-omb to blow me through the gate. That thing has blown me up so many times I'm still crispy. Since they don't allow coins to be collected even outside of the 15 courses, that means a number of mine don't count: 3 from Bowser, 3 from the Switch Block stages, and the Secret Aquarium, so I'm at 69 by their standards.

There's 76 console-doable-in-sane-amount-of-time, one or two more with emu :)
Are you sure that's it? I just reached 76 with no help from my emulator and I'm pretty sure I can get more. The theoretical maximum is 90 because 2 stars in every course are for 8 red coins and 100 coins. I reached 76 through 15 castle secret stars and the maximum of 5 stars in course 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 15. I abondoned the other courses without reaching 5, but not always because they couldn't be reached, but usually laziness. The star numbers in the other courses are: 1 = 1,2,3 4 = 2,6 6 = 1,3,5,6 7 = 1,2,4 8 = 1,2,3,4 11 = 1,6 13 = 1,2,3 I'll give 77 a shot tomorrow.

Despite it all, I would probably vote Yes for this except that we already know that it's improvable at the "Clear the Platforms" bonus stage. If the goal is fastest completion, this can be completed faster at that stage.

I don't give a flying banana who does the run. If a "more experienced" speedrunner wants to make a TAS, let them do so. As for me, I just spent all morning trying to get as many stars as I can with 0 coins in every course. Castle secret stars don't count because they don't show up in the "score". I can't pull off the damned bob-omb trick from Spezzafer's run to collect that star, but I'm working on course 13 and I have 64 stars already without collecting a single coin. It's pretty hard to avoid the coins in many levels. Hardest SM64 goal I've ever set for myself. Some people speedrun, some people TAS, some people go for high scores, some people go for low scores. Set a goal, try to achieve it, and don't be concerned about what anyone else is doing.

I don't know if Metal Mario could be done faster or not. All I know is that I don't find this as interesting at the DK run. Fox is fast, but boring.

Collecting all coins would make the run longer, but would it be more entertaining? It's not a big deal in Jolly Roger Bay, but some courses have 151 or 152 coins. Because of this, FODA was able to be selective and pick the 100 fastest coins, so those last 51 would add a lot of additional time. I think 120 stars is good enough for now, and I'm impressed that someone is even attempting it.

I'm thinking that maybe the description of this forum can be changed now. "Someday, we'll hopefully have a re-recording N64 emulator. Which one is it, we don't know yet. This forum is for discussion about those emulators."

That's a good idea. I love point-and-click adventures, especially if funny things happen to the characters, such as Gobliiins and Gobliins 2. It would be fun to see one of those games played really fast. They'd do all kinds of crazy things, and suffer all kinds of hilarious injuries, non-stop. Heck, I'd even watch a TAS of Peasant's Quest. Too bad we're limited to console games, but there must be some good adventure games to work with. These would be ideal for a newcomer because you only need to know the solution (search the net for walkthroughs) and then play it really quickly. One note about using walkthroughs is that you can often skip things or break the normal sequence of events in games like this, and not every walkthrough may know about all of them.

I'm more familiar with Chessmaster than Battle Chess, but if it's like the former it should have a very small opening book. If you play a common opening, it should play from book instead of wasting a lot of time thinking.

I'm a perfectionist, so when I first bought this game, I immediately set out to achieve "100%" and didn't stop playing until I felt I had achieved it. One of my criteria was to get every coin on every course. Someone else's definition of 100% may vary.

That didn't take you long. It's still repetitive and the Metal Mario fight is still boring, but I love the weapon use in the Fighting Polygon fight. Fox may be fast, but I still don't find it as interesting as Jammer01's DK run, which had a greater variety of moves. Tough call. At any rate, I don't think it was necessary to fight Ness at the end. It's not really part of the Very Hard run itself. Once unlocked, you don't fight him at the end any more. Beating Very Hard just happens to be the criteria that unlocks that particular hidden character, just as beating the game at other difficulty levels unlocks other characters.

Of all the games that I thought someone would abuse a glitch to end the game faster, this was not one of them.

That qualifies as abusing a glitch, which is one of the things people look for in a TAS.
