Thanks for the suggestion, I assume by hex editor you mean something different than Maximus's tas movie editor. But I checked and it looks like there is no hex editor for VBA.

Minor question: if I need to edit in a mode change (from game boy to super game boy) at the very beginning, does it need to be at least 1 frame long?

Go to SDA if you want no-out-of-boundary runs.

Yeah, the alarms were really loud, and it didn't help that they mostly went off in places where my guy could only speed-walk. When I played in frame advance the noise wasn't that noticeable, but once I played it back full speed it got pretty annoying.

Ok I've decided to try editing it in, however it doesn't seem to be working and the spliced movie is still in black-and-white game boy mode. The movie I'm trying to insert is 0 frames long, because it only contains the mode change. Is the mode change required to be at least 1 frame long? Here is my current run. Here is the mode change I'm trying to put at the beginning Maybe someone can take a look at them and see what's wrong.

Nice improvements, and a yes vote.

I get the same error. But full screen is not really needed since the default screen is already big if you maximize the window.

Hmmm ... I've never had this synching problem, but it might depend on how good your system is. A slower computer will do a poorer job of capturing video, resulting in dropped frames and thus a desynch. Click on Options -> Sound and it should tell you what rate the audio is being played back (my default is 44 Khz). I don't know if this will help, but during audio compression try setting the bitrate the same as the VBA audio rate. If that doesn't work, the only thing I can think of is to turn off sound and record only video, then record only sound using Tools -> Record -> Start sound recording and then splice the two files together using VirtualDub.

After you select Tools -> Record -> Start AVI recording and then name the file, it should bring up a list of video compression choices. The only one that seems to work for me is Xvid, so download that and install it. After you install it, choose Xvid in the video compression menu and then record the movie. You can choose to compress the audio later; I usually use the standard MPEG Layer-3 encoder that comes with most Windows computers. EDIT: for audio compression you need to use VirtualDub, open the video file in VirtualDub, go to Video -> Compression and select the same Xvid codec (so it doesn't become uncompressed) then click Audio -> Full processing mode, then click Audio -> Compression and select MPEG Layer-3, with the bitrate being up to your choice. Then click File -> Save as AVI and name the video, and the audio will be compressed.

I'm guessing that you need to compress the avi (both video and audio) since emulators output huge avi files that are hard for computers to read.

People won't become members unless they sample the movies and decide whether it is good or not.

Yeah, maybe speedrun competitions or the famtasia forum can be replaced with a hack forum, since nobody really goes there.

That was the smallest photobucket could resize it, although I see you've found another way to shrink it. Thanks for the updated pic.

I've never played MP, but I can testify that MP Hunters sucks balls due to most of the issues JXQ brought up and the lack of save points.

Maybe, but I'll take my chances with editing it in at the last moment since color mode is seriously messed up and I can't see where I'm going.

How would a color change affect the timing?

Right now I'm trying to find the warp barrel in the third level. The faq says it's to the left of the second fly, but I don't see it anywhere. @spockybiemmichab: you might be right about jumping to cancel the rolling pause being faster. I'll try rolling, then jump in the middle of the roll, then immediately roll after coming down, and repeating the process.

Is it possible to rewind a movie because you saw an interesting part and want to go back to it? Most emulators have a turbo button that allows you to fast forward, but no rewind button. I know someone's gonna tell me "play the movie again and make a savestate before the interesting part", but that would be impractical for really long movies like Chrono Trigger.

It looks very nice everywhere except the overworld, where you paused twice. Weak yes vote.

Actually, now that I think about it I'm just going to finish up all the levels first and then edit the mode change in at the very last moment.

Okay thanks, I guess I'll have to download the .NET framework and try it out. Is there a FAQ for using the tas movie editor? I can't seem to find one in this official thread.

And this is all done using the TAS movie editor?
