How about a Mini-Game Island run that maximizes coins?
Hard to define "maximises" for a game like Cast Aways. I'm sure you could get like 80 coins, but who knows exactly what is possible? A couple of notes: I'm pretty sure Knock Block Tower and Pipe Maze have only a few predetermined setups. There's one Knock Block Tower set with six blocks, so I suppose you want to dodge that one. Which of swapping and rotating is faster on Shell Game? And sure, all the shooting between platforms on Wario's Battle Canyon would be slow, but you can always use the question marks to switch them around, and you don't even need a Full Play - a Standard Play with one star per turn yields 140 stars. You could, potentially, even do a Lite Play and get enough stars for it, though it'd require some serious coinage in the minigames, so you might need to make the game give you Cast Aways a lot, or even all, of the time. This would also require four player input - mostly alternating, but in the minigames it'd be simultaneous. It'd be pretty damn impressive, that's for sure.

Okay, I got bored so I decided to go and play some Mario Party. I decided to check which games could be optimised for time and which ones could not, so here goes: WORLD 1 Coin Block Blitz: Yes (I don't know how you'd go about optimising it though) Coin Block Bash: Yes Coin Shower Flower: Yes! You can pick up 25 coins and fall off, and it'll be a clear! Paddle Battle: No WORLD 2 Memory Match: Yes Ground Pound: Yes Limbo Dance: Yes Musical Mushroom: Yes (you'd also have to make the music stop as quickly as possible) Piranha's Pursuit: Not sure. Do you go faster the more you tap B here? Here, the path splits. It needs to be decided which of Worlds 3/4 and World 5 is quicker (there's 9 minigames on 3/4, and 8 on 5). On one hand, we have... WORLD 3 Crazy Cutter: Yes, by ensuring you get the quickest one, and just get the 80 points Buried Treasure: Yes Desert Dash: Yes, but quite minimal Tug Of War: Yes, I think? Teetering Towers: Possibly, but only very slight. WORLD 4 Bobsled Run: Yes Skateboard Scamper: Don't think so, only very marginal if anything Handcar Havoc: Yes Ghost Guess: Yes And on the other hand... WORLD 5 Cast Aways: No, but you can get a hell of a lot of coins Shy Guy Says: Not that I know of, but I'm sure you could luck manipulate it somehow Bumper Balls: Yes Treasure Divers: Yes Bombs Away: Yes, if you can get rid of all three opponents Deep Sea Divers: Yes, minimally Mushroom Mixup: Yes, and it'd look pretty damn cool if done well Tightrope Treachery: Yes, I'd say there is a way to ensure that they don't hit you (or at least not make you stop) Alternatively, you could save the trouble, and play 100% and do both. Either works. WORLD 6 Box Mountain Mayhem: Yes Pedal Power: Can't see why not Tipsy Tourney: Yes Hot Bob-Omb: No, but you should be able to make it so you don't get it or something Bombsketball: Yes, but not much quicker than a real player could do Hot Rope Jump: No, because I'm pretty sure the CPU players can't lose WORLD 7 Slot Machine: Not much, ideally you'd get a coin to save you picking up too many of them Crane Game: No, but you'd obviously put a person in the closest position Pipe Maze: No, except maybe ensuring the game gives you a maze where the first pipe is the winner Bowl Over: No Whack-a-Plant: Maybe a little, especially early on Mario Bandstand: No WORLD 8 Running of the Bulb: No Grab Bag: No Key-pa-Way: Maybe a little Balloon Burst: Yes Face Lift: No Bash 'n' Cash: No WORLD 9 Hammer Drop: Yes (see Coin Shower Flower) Slot Car Derby 1: Yes Shell Game: No Knock Block Tower: No Platform Peril: Maybe Slot Car Derby 2: Yes In conclusion, World 8 sucks. And I have too much time on my hands. Incidentally, for a 100 star run... surely you could play a Full Play and get it to give you 100 stars in one hit? I think the best level for this would be Wario's Battle Canyon, since you can always shoot one player to the next star. Would there also be a way to ensure that the minigame played is always going to get you major coins, like Key-pa-Way, or better yet, Cast Aways?

An idea for a random Mini Game Island optimisation: If you collect 25 coins on Coin Shower Flower and jump off, is that a clear or a miss? I'd love to see just how fast the two Slot Car Derbies can go...

Because you can't complete any of the games without picking some up at some stage?

So I finally got around to watching this. (Two ROMs and controller settings bungles later...) I like it so far, it looks impressive, and the finish to Amazing Arena 4 looks brilliant. =D However, I don't know if it's because of character selection or what have you, but your times are in some cases worse than the TSC records. I may endeavour to get gamersince93 here and give you good routes for the remainder of the levels, to save you the trouble of working them out yourself. Also, in the "real" run, I suppose you'll attack the thinger that decides your level on the first available frame rather than going through each level separately? (since you'll have all your routes down by then, hopefully)

Very well. 34. MIPS 1 35-41. Shifting Sand Land (No caps needed) 42-48. Lethal Lava Land (No caps needed) 49-57. Toad Star + Metal Cap + Hazy Maze Cave (Star 3 requires Metal Cap) 58. MIPS 2 59. Vanish Cap (Re-enter + quit Vanish Cap course; reappear in lobby) 60-66. Big Boo's Haunt (Star 6 requires Vanish Cap) 67-74. Dire, Dire Docks + Bowser in Fire Sea
Can't you do better than that? 34. MIPS 1 35-43. Toad Star + Metal Cap + Hazy Maze Cave 44-50. Lethal Lava Land 51. MIPS 2 (if I'm not mistaken, doesn't it appear right in front of you as you exit LLL, and runs towards Shifting Sand Land? Or is the pattern different for the second time around... I don't know.) 52-58. Shifting Sand Land etc. I'm rusty to say the least with SM64, I'm basing my assumptions off speedruns I've watched in the past. =P

Just for reference, the current TSC record for Speed Slider 1 is 10"96. We do have videos for about half the levels in this game - might be worth consulting. Given some levels are better played at different times of day, could you luck manipulate to get the best result? EDIT: Both your links have an unnecessary " on the end.

Alright, time for me to weigh in on the situation. Firstly, and I have no real basis for this, but I believe Totodile is the optimal choice. The key here is that it learns Rage very early on, which can be very useful in the early gym battles. Not to mention being able to use Surf right away, which as well as being quite powerful allows you to catch the Red Gyarados for Waterfall and Whirlpool. The alternative being discussed is giving Surf to Poliwag and fighting through with Typhlosion - I think you're going to run into a lot of strife particularly in the Ghost and Fighting gyms if you try this approach. Secondly, Flash is completely unnecessary - you only need to get through the first part of Mt. Silver without it, and I differed with Brown_Bomber in that I traversed Rock Tunnel backwards. Which is the quicker Kanto path is still up for debate, our tests showed the paths were quite close. Ironically, the Sprout Tower where you get Flash is probably the major deterrent for using Totodile. =P Thirdly, items like the Magnet and Hard Rock and other such items are largely irrelevant - 10% of an attack is not that much, especially when you're manipulating luck for critical hits anyway.

Just on the topic at hand, I maxed out Metropolis 3 at 223 rings yesterday. Unfortunately Knuckles comes up one ring short...

Bah, using S3&K's bonus stages wouldn't make it any fun to watch at all... The HUD can only display 999 without going into Debug mode - I've achieved this on Marble Garden 1 with Sonic. The only game where this would be useful is Sonic 2, which gives you Perfect bonuses at the end of each level. There are a few levels which you can't get Perfect on though (Aquatic Ruin 2, Mystic Cave 2, Oil Ocean 2, and all acts of Metropolis). Come to think of it, Metropolis 3 might be possible after all - only one way to find out.

For the record, Suzaku's Single-segment run went up today. I quite enjoyed it. Plenty of room for improvement, but good enough to make people notice. :)

On an interesting note, this run was actually submitted before Sprint's Sonic 3 and Knuckles run. Sure, that run was extraordinary, but surely this run deserves consideration almost a year on? Oh, definite yes vote.

Ah, hang on. Starting from a new game, the large rings aren't worth 50. That's 233. You just told me ten of the ones you missed - that ring box can in fact be got with a Lightning Shield. Grab the one at the end of the level and come back. You need to spindash from the platform above the ramp so that you're not in ball form when you launch up. This gives you much more control in getting up to the moving platform, and then the 10 ring box. As for the other eight, I'd have to watch, and I don't feel like it. >_> EDIT: I think I just worked it out. As you enter the second part of act 1, you have the overhanging spikes to run under, and above that is eight rings. I'm pretty sure Sonic needs the Lightning Shield to get them all. And I'm not sure that there could be different ring counts for each character - Sonic 2 did a scan of the level at the end. If there were no loose rings, the game would register a perfect bonus.

No, S3&K doesn't have perfect bonuses for levels. Only Sonic 2 does that. There's a total of 343 in the level, but my guess is you only got 333 (but you'd still get the perfect, as ring boxes don't count towards it).

Nice work. I'm surprised my way which I used solely for the purpose of ease turned out quicker though. Might it be a little quicker to charge a spindash on the second seesaw in the ascent (in other words, the only one you take) and release it before the glide onto the loop?

Hopefully I can get people interested in this one. Before you attempt to just make this a carbon copy of Quietust's Sonic 2 run, there's a few important strat changes with Knuckles. (Note that these videos are recorded at full speed.) Firstly is Chemical Plant 2. This is a simple one which with re-recording should go to about 31 seconds. Secondly, and my favourite, Hill Top 1. This has plenty of potential - I'd guess at about 30 for this one. Furthermore, Knuckles is slightly disadvantaged in Mystic Cave 2 in that he can't make a certain jump - can't think of any other obvious jump-based disadvantages at the moment.

Firstly, I was unable to view either video detailing the Oil Ocean 2 glitch, which I wasn't too happy with. Incidentally, I have an improvement for that very level - after you fall out of the wall at about 11 seconds, you can jump up to the platform instead of running around to get up to it. This represents a 3-4 second saving. It might be made obsolete by this new glitch - I don't know. And another thing:
I don't believe you held the TSC record for Death Egg in Sonic 2. (And if you were tied for first I don't believe you were the first to achieve that time.)
He still does.
