Found a glaring mistake in 1-3 (Let the water out!), fixed it, saved about three seconds. It'll be in the next WIP.

Yeah, I liked it. Voting yes. I dunno whether or not you could've made more kills without just spiking all the time, but the Samus kill is still awesome. Other awesome kills: Mario Bros, Metal Mario (I don't care what anyone else says), and the Polygon team was reasonably varied too.

It seems demand for a 100% run is still pretty high, so what I've done is undertaken a bit of an experiment. I played through the first chapter in real time in an attempt to find out exactly what causes 100-coins to appear. Of course I have no expertise with memory watching myself, so would it be possible to enlist someone who does to solve the mystery? I've uploaded the file here - it gets three 100-coins, one in story 1, 3 and 4. (Which, incidentally, is a higher ratio than I've ever seen - I expected to play most of the main story to get that many of them.)

OK. I have never played Metroid 2 so I fully expected this to be over my head. But I had the ROM handy so I got it anyway. FerretWarlord, you should be taken in for brain-icide. That was more broken than Sonic 3... generally accepted as the standard for breaking a game. Congratulations.

Sure, as soon as someone isolates the cause of 100-coins. I'm going to need to get a substantial amount for the 50-coin treasure requirement.

More, even. Apparently Myles Bukrim has a 17:30 or so in the pipeline. <youtube link that I can't be arsed to find goes here>

It can't do soft resets, and the only reason I said all emeralds was because you need 50 rings to get the big ring, which is impossible in a no ring run. Irony and bad jokes abound!
For bonus points, try getting the first emerald without collecting any rings!

I gave a "yes" vote, but here's a good question: Is it impossible for Sonic to avoid rings and shields?
Were it possible, I would've done it with Sonic. Specifically, Sonic can not avoid: * 3 rings in Marble 2 (probably more) * A few rings in Spring Yard 3 * 10 rings in Labyrinth 2 * 5 rings in Scrap Brain 1 (without a spindash Sonic can't perform the skip that I did with Knuckles) In fact, I tested all the official releases and none of them proved completable under this condition. This hack, however, was.

Two more levels of ringless goodness! When I first did SY2 it was slower than on my old run, so I had a lot of fun with the input editor, especially when it came to the second bumper. I was out of position and faced with the prospect of having to find a way through again... The end result is what you see there. Last public WIP! Get it while it's hot!

WIP through SY1 I'll release another public WIP at SY3 (for comparison with the existing one earlier in the topic), but at that point it gets hidden. I have to have some things up my sleeve :) Also I think you will agree that Marble 3 is the best level in the run to date.

I know this topic hasn't been posted in for some time, but it's really the only relevant place to put this. I've started work on my no-ring run of the Knuckles in Sonic 1 hack again. Progress through [EDIT!] Marble 2 is here. Those of you who followed my last effort will note that the times this time around are slower. I've made a conscious decision to play "through" the levels rather than just gliding over them - call it a speed/entertainment tradeoff. In addition to no rings, I'm also ignoring shields and invincibility, so as to bypass any means of avoiding damage. I was going to skip all items and make it a genuine 0%, but the speed shoes are just too cool to ignore.

The idea's been canvassed in the Knuckles in Sonic 1 hack, since it's been proven that 0 rings is possible there. For added effect, I'd say you can't collect items either (ie. no shields, invincibility, maybe speed shoes too but it'd be somewhat a pity to leave those out). I might give this project another spin in July when I have a break. If you bug me enough about it beforehand I'm sure I'll be able to fit some time in when I should be studying though :)

All the loose ends have been tied up nicely. Definite yes. Highlight: SB2 optimisations. Complete with a 30:10 finish to minimise the time bonus!

Marble 1 can also make use of the edge-of-rising-platform glitch, my brother (smizzla on TSC) has already managed 29 in real time. Otherwise, well done! The file doesn't seem to actually exist so I can't download it though... any assistance? :/

Merry Christmas from Australia! Here, unlike for the rest of you, it actually is Christmas Day right now. So er... yeah we're cool.

Game Gear can get 18 on act 1. Roll down the hill after the forced jump (while you're still offscreen, of course). In act 2 you jumped against a wall rather than just making a smaller jump underneath it.

Well, it looks like Sonic 3 and Knuckles is going to have to be broken a little bit more. Courtesy of SkyLights of TSC comes this. Draw your own conclusions as to why this happens, but this could probably take Hidden Palace down to... 22?

A few clarifications:
plusminus wrote:
What's the cutoff for the huge time bonus?
20 seconds. I'm not deliberately slowing down to avoid it anyway, it looks stupid.
plusminus wrote:
Getting all the emeralds lets you play the last level, doesn't it? If so, I'm all for it. Perhaps clarify this in the submission text.
Added to submission text. You're right, I should have pointed that out initially, I suppose I figured it was common sense.

It would've been nice however to see you using a hang glider far more efficiently than you could when playing it real time :P
While to an extent I am inclined to agree, I always hated the hang glider as a kid because I could never remember how to use it. As such I am biased against it and never want to have to use it again.

I will say you didn't optimally use the L+R glitch, you need to press L+R, then down and then hold L+R after that. That way you will get much faster aceleration at the start.
I'd be interested to see that in action. I tried similar things that didn't have the desired effect :o

Any particular reason for getting the Ring bonus on the Bonus Plate instead of Robotnik's ugly mug?
Ring comes up when your ring count is a multiple of 10. Most often this is 00 because I've just taken a damage boost or something.

I was so glad to see the back of Aqua Lake, that I blitzed Green Hills last night/today. Link This may or may not be my last one, I'll decide after I finish with Gimmick Mountain whether to upload that one too.

This run is inevitably awesome. Obvious yes for me. It must be said that there were far more enjoyable parts of the run than the actual skip that makes 0-star possible, but that skip itself makes for a highly awesome proof of concept. I suppose the equivalent of this would be... giving the "Ice Cap" treatment to every level in Sonic 3. Get to work!

Okay put simply I haven't got a clue what's going on. I had a substantial early lead in AL2 but it got whittled away in a hurry. But I've at least got something to show for the past few hours' work. Link EDIT: for the sake of comparison with existing resources, I finished the level without the emerald and came out with a low 1:04, from a 1 second start.

I've redone SH3 so it's down to 27, but I'm not posting a new WIP because I haven't been able to beat (or even match) Sprint's real time AL1 (or AL2, but we'll wait until we need to deal with that). If anyone has any advice for handling certain parts of that level it'd be greatly appreciated. EDIT: I changed my mind and put a new WIP up. This one includes Aqua Lake 1, so if anyone could be really nitpicky and work out where I could possibly be losing half a second or more to Sprint it'd help immensely. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1995310553/Sonic%202%20mike89.mmv
