Out of curiosity, what were the improvements? The stage with the cats in cages does look faster, but it didn't seem like it was almost 4 seconds faster... did you pull off any faster hits on the fridge boss?

Congrats, tormented! I'm trying to check out the improvement in the emulator (since a new video didn't get made yet), but somehow my installation of BizHawk can't find the GBA core files. I'm not sure why they didn't get set up automatically.

Good point, Edward_Stryfe. I guess the next evolution of these console bots is to make an animatronic robot that actually moves its fingers fast enough to hit buttons with individual frame precision :-) If you check out the input animation gimmicks for some runs like the Megaman X & X2 & X3 triple run, that would be especially crazy for that bot.

Hello tormented, have you been able to look into any changes to the run based on the comments here? You mentioned you'd be curious about a run through the cages level that kills more dogs. If you can fix up that part by hex-editing, you can get the submission's movie file changed without having to redo the whole submission.

Ferret Warlord: I remember that book a little! I had forgotten about that one story with the old lady. If you want to see a boss fight against a little old lady, check out Stage 1 of The Mask. I am a little disappointed that the stages in this game don't incorporate more stories from that book Ferret mentions though. You could be a viking, or a mafia member, or a cat in space! However, this game moves pretty fluidly and seems to have good variety. I don't see any point in all the collectible items though, and the boss fights were good. I have a few technical questions: * Could you beat that big cat boss (the one with the kamikaze strategy) in a way so Garfield ends up further on the right? It seems like Arlene takes more time to walk to Garfield after the fight if he's on the left. * In the following stage when you save cats in cages, could you instead kill more dogs with jump kicks instead of jumping over them? You have to jump for the dogs anyway, and if you kill the dog, it won't be around to jump over on a return trip and won't produce more lag. (In fact, I could suggest that you one-hit-kill more enemies in the whole run, but this stage stands out because you keep doubling back over parts of the route.) * Against the final boss, does it hurt it at all to jump kick the top freezer door? Since that seems to be a place where you get your health refilled, I'm curious if it's worth taking any damage yourself to score more hits on the boss. * And on a related note, if you don't hit back the food items right away, do more food items come out at a faster rate? (Sort of like the strategy that Super Mario World runs now have with the final Bowser fight, where they don't use both Mechakoopas right away) Anyway, this looks like a pretty good first run! Good job working your way up from being shoddy at a game to developing some speedruns!

McBobX: I'm glad you like the run, but you should still watch the run before you vote. You may still post to show your approval, though, even without voting :)

Wow. That's pretty nuts. Great job! Would the death abuse also speed up a run without large skips? It amazes me that death could possibly save time in this game :)

Wow, nice! It doesn't feel like spending more time on the final bosses without the "Goku blasts" is worth the rouge change at the end, but I'll trust your route timing. It is a more interesting route, especially since you don't have to wait to climb that machine part.

Great job! I'm glad to see that you went with a realtime run; it was impressive to see how quick some realtime strats were. And the phrase "huge amount of Diggi swag" is very appropriate at that point :-) Oddly enough, I didn't catch the point in the second stage where you had the narrow window of opportunity. Nothing in that part looked frame-perfect at first glance, whereas I was more impressed with all the narrow enemy jumping in Hornet Man's stage.

Nice going. The damage boost skips look a lot cleaner. It's a shame the Koffing fight takes so long though; could you use any Pokeballs to make that fight more interesting? (I noticed you didn't go into the fight with any, since you had taken damage.) The game is still fairly Meh after a while, but it has its nifty points. I don't understand why that made it so Pikachu moves faster to the left though.

Great job. It wasn't your fault with what happened with the previous publication, but I appreciate that you went back to this run and polished it again. I wasn't expecting you'd return to this so soon, but I'm glad to see the game again. The first field (number 00) looks especially incredible.

This looks like an alright choice of game. It is basically Pang / Buster Brothers. I have no problems starting on the last level if the game actually gives you that option. Several puzzle game runs at TASVideos currently use the last level possible: Tetris, Super Gussun Oyoyo, Dr. Mario, Tetrisphere (I think), Boulder Dash (for NES), and probably some others. Then again, maybe that only qualifies them to be "Demonstration" movies that are ineligible for Vault. I don't know the specifics on that. If there's a strategy that beats the hardest level in only 15 seconds, I'd say that seems like a worthy choice for at least the Vault tier!

Alyosha: Thanks for the answers. It is a shame that last PC level is left out, though it's not like that level makes any sense in the game anyway. It's definitely on drugs, and the game doesn't really make clear what you're supposed to do to properly beat it. It was way more satisfying in the first game to swordfight Jaffar and have him fall down a tower, instead of playing a game of cat-and-mouse and then fireballing his ass. Also, this game is also called "The Shadow and the Flame", but those elements only show up in the last two levels of the PC version! (In this version, they show up for basically 20 seconds at most.) I guess the Vault judgment on this run is not too surprising, since it is basically a puzzle game that comes down to tight routing. There are some close shaves that I wouldn't try unassisted, but there aren't really any jaw-dropping moments unless you really know the game. (The skeleton escape at the end of the caves, for instance, is one of those, as are any times when you running-jump past horizontal blade traps in the walls.) The major glitch does make the run more interesting, but then it's hard to follow the route.

The loading times feel fairly inconsistent, but I can live with that. This was a great run. The difference between this run and Mukki's is a lot bigger than I expected.

Wow, WTF. That's incredible. Can this side-wrapping glitch be used more often to save time in 1-4 and 2-4? It seems like it should make a big difference. And, as Alyosha mentioned, maybe it's now worth it to get fewer strength powerups.

Well, it's definitely a Sunsoft game: the music makes that clear. The tunes are nice, though a little repetitive. I recall this game gave you a lot of stuff you could search for, but when you go for any%, it gets more repetitive and linear. Luckily, Fester's slow walking speed doesn't get too boring because of the volume of baddies who get in your way pretty aggressively. The boss fights are also pretty ridiculous. I'm stuck between Meh and Yes, largely due to how repetitive the game gets. I appreciate your tradeoff to light up some sewers, and it was good to see a mix of lighted and non-lighted. The weapon usage is pretty cool. I'm sorry to say I didn't get the reference after Boss 5. The only thing I can think of is that maybe you're dancing away from the boss similar to the Blaster Master runs, but I don't think that's what you were going for. Bisqwit: Willow is an interesting case. Those submissions were done before the Vault existed, and they'd probably get taken into the Vault now, but... well, they can't be because of the author of those runs. That's another really slow-paced run of a fairly long game. While I've liked seeing progress on it, I could never watch the runs without fast-forward.

Neat. I wasn't expecting to see this so soon. I only know the PC version of this game, and I'm rusty on knowing the proper routes, but that pretty much goes out the window after doing the glitch anyway. Thus, I probably wouldn't be much help with this run. I have a few questions, though some of them may b questions more about why nitsuja did something a certain way. The level numbers are confusing for this game, since I don't know if you count things like the intro scene and the opening of the desert cave as "levels"... * When the desert cave opens, you're generally not supposed to run on the tile with the picture. You're supposed to save it for last. Nevertheless, you run over it and the puzzle is completed properly. Why is that? * In the second stone cave stage, when you float down to the bottom with that potion, why do you keep grabbing onto ledges? After the first one, it seems like you could just keep falling straight down without grabbing the overhangs briefly. --> Then on that same stage, you jump into the wall before climbing up to the switch to open the goal door. Since jumping into the wall makes you stunned a bit, is that faster than just running up to the wall before stopping and climbing up? (It even seems like you could run up to the wall and crouch. You use that trick somewhere else, and that seems pretty fast.) * Why can't you trigger the glitch instead in the second stage after the carpet? There's a tunnel just to the left of where you start, and it has a snake in it. I thought you could get the glitch triggered by making the snake attack you in the tunnel. * In the last palace stage with the birdmen, doesn't the glitch enable you to run through doors? You look like you need to use a switch to hit that door. Lastly, that glitch where somehow you kill Jaffar, even though it looks like you kill yourself at the exit door, is utterly bizarre.

Oh well. I was just surprised to see no response in this thread. Thanks for trying though, and congrats on the publication.

They do a good job. I compared with the Taser work of Japan, you are faster. However, you also have 6 frames lost from bad skip during the opening credits.
Did this get missed before the publication? I was wondering if it was possible to hex-edit in a 6-frame improvement. It's probably not worth the trouble now for this publication, but it could be kept in mind for future improvements.

Hi Krankdud, There's actually a couple submissions currently in the Workbench for this game! The first one was for the settings the old movie used... NTSC speed, difficulty 2. After discussion in the forums, a new movie was made that properly used PAL speed and difficulty 4. (That's the movie with the 8:40ish time.) You may want to join the discussion for that movie. Hopefully, any changes can be edited in without too much trouble.

It's a bit of a shame that the bonus levels last so much longer than the regular stages. I think you did a pretty good job with the playarounds there. I could imagine the players' frustrations chasing each other down and popping each other's balloons. As for the actual stages, they're quite speedy. The usage of bouncing is pretty fun, and it's good to see a few occasional strategy changes like hitting the flippers. This is a good run of a short game which still has good variety!

(http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Well, it seems like this is the version of the run that should avoid all the controversy. It looks like PAL speed made this run about 1:20 longer. Thus, even though this looks slower than the currently published run, it's at least a minute faster if they both use the same speed and timing. Once again, it's an awesome run. Great job working so quick to make all the changes too!

Mothrayas, you brought up some good points. I am happy to see that it ultimately didn't lead to a lot of additional work to fix. That was lucky. fsvgm777: The question about difficulty level was brought up in the forums. If I recall correctly, it sounded like the only change was HP, so it wasn't deemed worthwhile to use difficulty 4. Is the distinction in difficulty perhaps more pronounced with PAL timing?

Even though I've never actually played this game, I love watching runs of it. The player rolls right through lots of enemies and bounces around frantically, then makes mincemeat of bosses with the special weapon. Even though Luke's published run looks fast, this blows it out of the water. Absolutely everything feels faster, and the jumps are a lot smoother. Stage 4-3 is especially WTF-worthy. Alyosha, I hope you can update a Tricks page for this game to explain the speed oscillation tricks you used. Out of curiosity, was the final boss so much faster because you used up less special shots fighting only one miniboss in 5-2? Your 5-3 fight makes the published run's fight look really cheap. My vote for this is Hell Yes. It's even more impressive to me that Alyosha basically did this entire run over once or twice when he found new speed tricks. He works very quickly. (And thanks for the shoutout, but you did the real work. You may also want to thank Arc for some of his work on the 1-3 fist boss too.) Lastly, as far as PAL vs. NTSC is concerned, I don't think it should be an issue. I admit I don't really care about the distinction, but even more so, having the game run faster with NTSC settings makes it look even more impressive and harder to control. I figure it's like an extra level of difficulty for this run. (For some precedent where a published run got accepted even though a technical issue got overlooked at the start, see the current Demon Sword run.)

Nice job... it's good to see route changes that save so much time. But wow, this game looks and sounds so much worse than the NES Tom & Jerry. The text displays with the score between stages looks so bad for the SNES. I feel like a lot of the damage-taking looks pretty bad here, unless it's for an obvious boost. However, I understand that you have to save frames and minimize lag.
