Rockman The EXE: You only have 3 rerecords. Why is that?

You're being pretty hard on the game, Samsara. It does have its slow unavoidable moments, but it has style. It made for a fairly good casual watch beforehand, and it's even better now. You put good effort into the choreography (especially in the beginning), and I liked seeing more use of the shotgun. The extra orb areas were cool too if you fast-forwarded the girls' dances. It's a shame there's no way to speed up that final pumpkin fight, which is now the most boring part of the game. Regardless, this falls somewhere between Meh and Yes for me. I also agree with your recommendation to obsolete the current one with this run in a similar category. (However, the precedent for this kind of thing isn't clear... see the Aladdin SNES run, for instance.) EDIT: This movie syncs with the English fan translation ROM as well that Diman used. I used it to see what the extra two scenes said... it was not impressive. The first says "The 2 are happy..." and the second says "... until tragedy strikes."

Thanks for the responses! With the Wily station, the chicken and skeleton are the last two enemies before you switch back to Flash Stopper. I am suggesting that you change to Flash Stopper earlier and use it to stop those enemies instead. You'd go into the menu the same number of times, use Flash Stopper one or two more times (but it has plenty of ammo), and you'd use Rush Jet two fewer times. Anyway, your detailed comments show me you really did your optimization homework :)

Nice! This is what this game needed. The route is surprising enough to make this game actually entertaining, IMHO. I especially like the key grab and how much you shoot the girl before you somehow save her unharmed. Thanks for putting me in the acknowledgements, though all I did really was suggest a way to end input earlier that I guess saved half a second at most.

I forgot to mention in my first post that some of the route choices were pretty surprising in this run. For instance, in Ring Man's stage, I didn't know you could slide for that 1up and jump right away without any solid ground underneath you. That was a cool timesaver. The spike skip in Bright Man's stage was WTF-worthy.

i´m interested in which spot you think it needs some more polish :)
Alright, I'll rewatch the movie and try to find points that seemed suspicious. Pharoah Man's stage: Many of the vertical shafts feel suboptimal. You don't prejump before them to go in with more vertical momentum (though I don't know if that would actually help), and you swing pretty wide in the fall. You can see this in any of the wide shafts when you finish moving right and fall into one small room. Ring Man's stage: Whenever you fire a small Pharoah shot up-right, to kill a little planet enemy, the game lags a lot. Perhaps it would save more time to jump closer to the enemy before firing. You'd lose some horizontal momentum, but you'd get rid of lag. You notice something similar when you fire at one enemy near the BEAT letter. Toad Man's stage: Like in Ring Man's stage, I wonder if it's really worth it to kill some of the enemies overhead. You get some lag from Pharoah shots, I think. Bright Man's stage: When setting up the Rush Coil jumps over the spikes, you seem to have some small awkward adjustments before doing the first coil jump. Would it make more sense to make the platform do two medium-size descents instead of one big descent followed by one adjustment? I think it would use the same amount of break time, but the platform would spend less time rising. Ballade 1: Perfect. Charge Man's stage: I feel like you lose more time than normal in the boss fight letting Charge Man do his charges. There may not be much you can do about it to make this fight faster. I know you're manipulating away his real time-wasting move already. Crystal Man's stage: Perfect. Napalm Man's stage: I feel like the last few shots on Napalm Man could be done more quickly. You seem to lose some time with the first shot when he jumps in the air. Stone Man's stage: With the second hippo, you shoot a small shot at first, instead of coming in with a charged shot. If you could do a big-small combo at first, it seems like it would save you some time. Is that not possible with the amount of ammo you have? Ballade 2: I can't think of anything concrete to make the escape part better. Perhaps more usage of Ballade Cracker would be good, but it does produce lag. Wily Space Station: After the first miniboss, you have a couple uses of short-lived Rush Jet to jump over enemies. They seem to create some lag. For the last chicken and skull guy, would it be better to use Flash Stopper earlier? You don't seem to run into ammo problems with it. Side question: when you fight the second hunter miniboss, your 4th Napalm Bomb hits the wrong one, but the boss still takes damage. Why is that? In the Pharoah Man refight, why don't you instead manipulate him to charge his big shot? He'd stay still for that, and this time you have a flat floor to fight on. It seems like he creates more lag jumping and firing small shots. In Wily 1, you deliver one last blow using Rush Coil. Instead of making that last shot, why not make it the first shot? It seems like you have a little spare time to make that work when dodging the shot the boss shoots at you. In Wily 2, you have a noticeable pause before firing the last shot. What is that for?

When I had this game as a kid, I was surprised at how difficult the second set of stages was. The Crystal Man stage, for instance, really gives you some unusual route choices and has the parts where you wait for the moving pillars. The escape part after Ballade 2 is deceptively hard too, and I was very amused to see the Charge Kick used in this run's strategy for it. This looked like a very solid run. It didn't feel as polished as some other runs for GB Mega Man games, but maybe that's because this game is just a little slower anyway. Nice job.

Nice improvement! The zip that avoids the death over the spike pit was pretty cool, though the escape from the girl's room is also interesting. Would it save you any frames of input to jump before the ending and let momentum carry you down to the location that triggers the ending screen?

I'd say delay if you think it will be done within a week. I'm looking forward to the route changes, though I dare say the route planning is more interesting than the game itself :/

I first misread the completion time as being 17 MINUTES. Consider me pretty surprised when I watched the encode. (I had forgotten quite how fast CoolKirby's run was for this.) Nicely done. Any interest in trying to make a full-game run on this?

The text of the submission really needs to be changed, since this run is not under 5 minutes anymore. Could you also put a small explanation there about why the credits glitch from the last submission is not used? (There were a fair number of posts in the old thread to sift through to figure it out.)

Incredible. This is no longer the famous Lv0-glitch, but this is equally broken. And welcome back, Genisto! (For the newer members of this site, Genisto was a major TASer of this site years ago who set a lot of records that lasted for a long time in games like Super Mario 3. A lot of his work predates memory watch and lag counters, I think, but he always did spectacular work finding glitches in games.)

If I recall correctly, Arc or FODA figured out this kind of way to trigger the credits around the time of the last published run. There was some discussion in the forums that ultimately rejected this kind of ending for looking sloppy. I guess standards about input endings have changed enough, though, in the last years. It's a pretty good-looking improvement of a pretty mediocre game. It is annoying how many lives you have to lose, though, to get the Game Over.

Wow, this game is more broken than the NES version. It gets a little repetitive since you don't have to react to the enemies as much, and the music is way worse than in the NES version. The new graphics are alright, but I got a bit of a headache in 6-3 with the tower graphics in the background that scroll very awkwardly. Good job, though, with the exploits. The bosses are well-done, as was the mechanics with the spin slash. It would be better if you could save any ninja points for the last bosses after the Masked Devil, but I doubt there's anything you could do about that.

Spikestuff, your encode is done processing now. Thanks for making it! Fly, first of all, good job with the submission text. The detail is very useful. The run looks nice, especially the experience management. The route for some of the stages (like stage 3) is impressive. You made some waiting parts entertaining, like that one part of the water stage where you wait on a platform. I like the usage of the ice clones too. My main small complaint is that you take damage at a few places where you don't need to, and it looks a little sloppy. There's the monk at the water platform, for instance, and there are the yellow gates in stage 7 that you slide at too early. Also, no matter what you do, stage 8 is pretty long and boring, though the miniboss quick kill is funny.

The SDA run for this game just got updated! It's a good bit faster now and credits this run for a lot of strategies. It also seems to have a new trick that would speed up this run. In 3-2, this run spends a lot of time going around a platform to get up to the boss fight. The SDA run manages to zip upward through a frozen enemy to get on top of the platform. That would probably save somewhere from 2-4 seconds in this run.

I really liked the published run. When I watch this submission, I'm surprised it only reduces about 10 seconds of lag. This movie feels like it flows a lot better. You make good use of actually killing enemies in the back with the dog, and the powerup is nifty. (I didn't actually see when you got the powerup though, nor do I know exactly how it works.) Nice improvement!

Jorf, are you the one who just got a run of this game published on SDA? That run looked pretty cool, and the 4-3 zip was incredible. (I had not been watching any works in progress on that run, but I am familiar with Luke's TAS.) It looks like the SDA run has a faster strategy on the final boss as well. This game is definitely long overdue for an improvement. I think Bisqwit pointed out something major as well in the submission thread for the published movie. Also, shoutouts to Manfred Trenz indeed.

This was fairly interesting. I think I'm ok with the use of codes here, since they give you Tails under the same conditions you would have him under a normal game of Sonic 2. My main concern is the Oil Ocean boss. In all the recent runs of Sonic 2, that boss is killed before he shoots anything, but this fight loses a lot of time when the lasers are getting shot. Is there some way to manipulate different behavior here?

Is the movie length reported wrongly? In the encode, it looks like there's gameplay until about 15:30, but the movie is being shown as having a length of about 14:06. If 14:06 is the in-game time, we don't usually put in-game time as the main one displayed.

I sort of liked this. It has some variety. The irregular lag is annoying, but the pacing is pretty good with the exception of the Stage 4 fish boss. I voted Yes.

AmaizumiUni: I don't understand your whole question, but I'm guessing you wonder why this is being treated as an FDS submission. You're right; it should be NES. For some reason, Alyosha's last few NES movies have all been treated as FDS by TASVideos automatic parsing if I recall correctly. Anyway, about the run itself, I am sort of underwhelmed that the improvement is so small. It's a great testament to how well the old runs were run though. In the submission text, you ask why a backwards fireball should go higher. I bet that was meant to make the worm fights a little easier. Generally, a really cautious player stays put in a defensive position and launches fireballs occasionally, so a backwards shot is a good thing to use when the worm passes overhead. (For the final Malkil battle, the game is of course expecting you to use the Shooting Sword of the third-level Knight.)

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! This was fairly amusing and short. With the Commodore-style graphics, it feels like a cross between Kung Fu and Out Of This World / Flashback. I didn't really see the main benefit of using the throwing stars, but I'll take your word for it if they really do speed up some fights. The cutscenes are probably more entertaining than the actual game, though. I feel like you had to have played this game to really appreciate how the enemies get abused. All in all, it adds up to a Meh from me.

Neat. I actually sort of like watching this, because you can almost follow everything that's going on but not quite. I appreciate the optimization that can go into ending input early, for instance. I'd be curious to know more about where the improvements come from. That being said, it's still not very entertaining. Meh.

This was interesting to know about, but not actually interesting to watch. Since when are Tony Hawk games autoscrollers? It seems no other handheld made that drastic a change to the core gameplay. It's good to see that you put out a 1st-place run even when the computer is cheap, but the end result is not an interesting product. I'm voting No on entertainment.

Thanks for the follow-up posts, Ferret Warlord and Archanfel. It took a while, but I got back to this and decided to give it more of a try. I see now what Ferret Warlord was saying about the turning mechanics... the steps where the player went away from a bubble spot were my concern. When I looked back over those stages, they seem fine now. Catastrophe also brings up a good point with the main game mechanic. Personally, I still have the issue that the main game mechanic tends to create a lot of waiting time. This game did get more interesting as it went on, for the most part. The best levels, for me, were the ones in the late 30s with the sliding ice floors. The music was ok, but it did have a very cool point in the late 50s, when it got very dark and spooky. The end was good too. I'd say this is a Meh vote from me. One question: is it possible to win this game while playing fewer levels? If not, then 100% is a redundant category.
