I don't think anyone was trying to attack anyone strongly. I think we just have a case here where some response are really short and the intention gets misinterpreted. At the risk of saying stuff that people already know, let's see if we can break down the relevant points here. I see kurabupengin's point: the level password that is used for the second quest is pretty different in nature from many other passwords because of the way it is entered. I think that ZELDA is the only name that the game will take that has a different effect. In contrast, most games with passwords have many different legitimate passwords that take the player to different parts of the game. Nevertheless, it is most consistent to call this a password. As Masterjun points out, that's how the other 2nd-quest movie is labeled. And while password usage is normally frowned upon, there are some notable exceptions. In this case, it's much better to have a 2nd-quest run start by using ZELDA instead of completing the entire 1st-quest at the start... it would feel more redundant to play the game through twice. (There are similar conventions in place for some more games, like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Rolling Thunder.) Ultimately, though, it's not a big deal what the relevant category is called. I agree with masterjun that it should be "Uses a level password".

I saw FODA's run a long time ago. I knew some things about this game, but I couldn't really follow his run since I had no real idea how the stages were laid out. (I had the same issue with Legacy of the Wizard, but I found that game easier to follow along with.) Thanks to your subtitles with this one, I have much more of a clue of how to follow along, and that's made all the difference here. I'm sorry they were hard to write, but I wanted to make sure you knew they were much appreciated. I wish I could say that I could really tell where your improvements were, or that I noticed the improved lag management, but I personally can't. However, I can still say this is a pretty dynamite run you have here. Great job! Now this run makes me think of Nethack...

Awesome. That is one of the more entertaining setups for game-end glitching. Why is the run on the FDS version? Does the NES cart not have these glitches? It seems you lose time on the loading screens for dungeons.

Dimon and Nitrogenesis: I understand. Thanks! I'm sorry if my tone was wrong. Anyone: any thoughts about the questions I had before? Thanks!

Dimon: What are you talking about? For me, the description is only one or two paragraphs, and it loads fine on my mobile device. (Also, an encode has recently been added.) xipo: Good job improving the run. I admit, though, that I don't know the game well enough to notice the improvements. I think I may be misunderstanding your description. * When you say "there is no secret in the improvement", do you instead want to say "there are no new tricks in this improvement" or something like that? * Do the "Red Alert" zones work like the enemy planes in Bionic Commando? It sounds like you're saying one of the main improvements was to avoid more of those zones.

Nice exploit. The game is fairly short and silly, and I'm still amused by the thrown weapons that fly slower than the enemies run. There was also some random exploding enemy in Stage 6 this time; that was cool.

Ok, so this is a puzzle game. Thank you for the encode. I only watched the first six minutes. It seems to be a pretty simple game, worse than Adventures of Lolo. The ability to use those magic bubbles is sort of cool, but the bubbles take a long time to pop. The game felt repetitive very quickly for me... it's probably more fun to play than to watch. In addition, it looks like you have some wasted steps and extra unnecessary motion in a few stages. (I saw questionable parts in stages 8, 18, and 20. I stopped watching in stage 21.) I'm not voting yet, since I have not watched the full movie, but unfortunately I think this is a No for entertainment.

Isn't the only glitch that one use of pausing in the Elec Man stage? I think the use of small magnet beam shots to help climb ladders is also an intentional feature. I don't recall seeing any other glitches being used... I'm pretty sure all the magnet beam usage I saw was what the game intended.

Why is the site treating this as an FDS run? Like your last submitted TAS, this is an NES run. EDIT: Anyway, I watched this just fine on the emulator. It really isn't that different from the published run at all, but it's still a good watch. It's a shame the cow and dog part is still so long in Turvia. Also, the blue robot fight really doesn't make any sense to me. You throw your last bomb away from them, and somehow that ends the fight.

With all due respect, Nach, I do not agree with your comments about abuse of the Magnet Beam. It is used quite frequently, but its uses only generally cut out gameplay people wouldn't want to see anyway, like waiting for blocks to appear or for moving platforms to get in place. A regular console runner would use the beam in similar places. My views are a lot like what scrimpeh said. This was a breath of fresh air compared to the very glitchy runs that break whole stages, cheapen bosses, and don't resemble normal play anymore. (This game does have the most broken TASes out of the entire NES Mega Man series, since even Mega Man 2 doesn't let you skip whole stages.) I would like to see a run that avoids the Magnet Beam, but I don't know if I buy the logic that says this run is an arbitrary category.

Thank you, FractalFusion! STAGE-BY-STAGE NOTES ON THE RUN In Gutsman's stage, things could have been a little more entertaining on the moving platforms. I'm a little surprised you killed all the miners... I thought it was faster to jump through them and take damage. The boss fight looked quite good. Cutsman's stage looked good. I like seeing that boss battle fought without any lag! In Elecman's stage, I have a couple concerns. First, you pause with the menu to get past an electric beam earlier... that seems like the use of a glitch, which isn't part of the category. Second, after you got the Magnet Beam, does it use more energy when you make longer platforms? If you could save energy with shorter platforms in the long horizontal room skip, then you could avoid running out of ammo in the last vertical climb to the boss. No comments about Iceman's stage. With Fireman's stages, you have some great shortcuts with the frozen pillars. However, you also collect bonus pellets from some enemies, which loses you a little bit of time at the end of the level. With Bombman's stage, good weapon usage at the end to stop the Sniper Joe and the enemy in the vertical shaft. Wily 1 was good, though the Yellow Devil fight takes a while. I'm fine with your choice to avoid the glitch to repeat damage, but it seems a little inconsistent for you to avoid that glitch while still using the pause glitch to pass through an electric beam in Elec Man's stage. In Wily 2, I know you can't avoid score pellets when you destroy the Suzies with the shield from Fire Storm. That's an unavoidable delay. In the boss fight, why do you start with the Elec Beam? For Wily 3, I would have liked to see you collect fewer score pellets from the first few enemies... I don't know if you can do much about that. The boss fight seems fine. Does no other weapon, except for Gutsman's power, do extra damage to the boss? With Wily 4, nice job with how you ended the Bombman refight. Gutsman felt slow, but there's not much you can do about that. The last Wily fights were cool, and I was glad to see you didn't have to pick up any weapon refills at all! OVERALL THOUGHTS I think this is pretty much exactly what I wanted from a glitchless run. There's a little more room for entertainment, but I think the run is still pretty fun. I would say this is nearly as entertaining as some of the NES Mega Man runs we have with lighter use of glitching, like the Mega Man 6 run. I'll vote Yes on this. Nice job!

Sorry, but is there anybody making a quick video encode on this? I am interested in seeing a glitchless run, but I can never get PSX emulation to work at an acceptable speed on my computer.

This feels like a mix of Wrath of the Black Manta (but less violent) and Nightshade (with a ninja suit instead of a detective coat). It was sort of amusing even though it was really clunky. The pace of the game feels alright. Even with your description, though, I couldn't really tell what you were doing... I'm not sure I even noticed the shuriken pickup. This is somewhere between a Meh and a Yes for me in entertainment. The highlight is probably the alligator.

I thought you may have delayed a little differently in the upper-left corner. I could be mistaken though... I didn't compare the runs side by side and was going off rough memories of the old one. Since I'm wrong about where the improvements are, could you provide some crude table of improvements?

Fair enough. I finally watched the run. For the record, it's not FDS, since it's not using the disk system. It should just be an NES run. Your run has some slight style differences to Baxter's. There's not much though. I did like your use of knee drops occasionally, since that move is never shown off in Baxter's run. It seemed like your strategies were a little different in 3-1 and in the dragon fights leading up to the final bosses; could you discuss those more? This is still an entertaining game, even if it is relaxing. Nice job.

I'm not real familiar with the work that led to this improvement. I mean, how much faster was Randil's WIP? I get the impression that for a run this old, there should be more improvement than just four seconds gained through some better momentum preservation. But if that's the way it is, I can live with that.

I'm actually pretty amused by the use of pausing to get the low in-game times. Imagine Yoshimitsu taking a time-out (to check his smartphone or something), and then he promptly goes to stab himself. It's sort of surreal to see that used repeatedly without any other kind of strategy. I'm looking forward to any time improvement too.

You can get the movie file replaced. In the meantime, you could add a new link to it in this forum or in your submission.

The way I see it, judge each hack on its own merits. If the hack is entertaining enough, it means people want to see it, and I have no issue with publishing it alongside. We shouldn't get a problem that way of too many similar hacks, because the more similar the hacks get, the less entertaining new ones will be. In this case, I think this run and the other MM4 hack are pretty different-looking. The air-slides and balloon usage make it stand out. Megiddo, I think the vote was "I think this is fun, but I don't think this merits publication." Technically, that vote is not answering the question the poll actually asks... but oh well. It's useful information for the judges.

Wily 3's music is the Lufia II boss fight music when you're fighting the Sinistrals. It took me a while to figure that out. I believe Wily 4's music is from Double Dragon 3, such as in the first bossfight of that game. The Wily music is the best selections in the game, and every other track is ok. (I was amused by the Shadow of the Ninja music when you select a robot master though.) The hack's worst feature, I think, is the color palette. I find the colors pretty awful for most of the game. The level design could probably be a bit better; right now, it looks like there's mostly just a lot of spikes that you're supposed to air-slide over in predictable ways. However, it's certainly passable. I really like the weapon designs and the air slides. The game is quite fast, and it's pretty impressive. Nice job with boss fight optimization especially! Yes vote.

For those interested in jumping right to the new stuff, the modified stage starts at around 9:53 in the temp encode. Nice strategy change! It looks really seamless, where you hardly go out of your way at all. Good thinking with the dragonflies too. I'm voting Yes. It's a shame more of the run isn't updated, but this is a big enough change worthy of this small update. Now, if you could figure out any way to have less waiting time in the final bossfight with Pete, my Yes vote would get three times bigger :-)

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Great improvement! I'd say this definitely goes up to Moons category now. Nice submission details as well.

Are you supposed to be able to become invincible this often? It seems like that removes all of the difficulty of the run. The run is fine; it has a little variety. It's not very entertaining, but there's not much you could do to change that. I vote Meh.

Oh, I had the flag heights backwards. My bad.

feos: If my wording came off as demanding, that wasn't the intention. I was trying to say that the little box doesn't have to be reserved for Star runs... I think we have a couple of those box runs that are currently in the Moons tier. Unless there was something else you were implying here? I'm sort of confused by your reaction.
