The semi-new WIP to Cold Killer's tower looks pretty good so far. The ascent up the first part of the steps to Cold Killer's tower looks especially clean, where you are missing enemies by small distances. The last part of the ascent seems unusual though, like you swing a little out of your way to get to the bottoms of ladders. Can't you just enter some of these ladders sideways? The other question this raises is whether it's worth having a run of Deadly Towers that beats all the towers as intended. For the moment, it's more important to work on a run that glitches to the end by beating Cold Killer twice. I'm not sure this game is interesting enough to also warrant an optimized run on the US version which beats all the towers. (Side note: BizHawk 1.7.1 is the first version I've tried that actually runs 60fps on my machine! I was super happy that I didn't have to do anything funny with my processor to watch this WIP comfortably.)

How does that route work? I thought you had to kill all the tower bosses, but somehow you can still get to the final boss beating Cold Killer twice. P.S. Another one of Luke's runs, Super Turrican for the NES, had a (probably) big improvement suggested in its discussion forum before it was published anyway. If you're looking for old NES runs, that's something to consider, and it's less of a crappy game than this one :-)

To those who are saying all Zapper games are boring: A game that only uses the Zapper is generally boring. However, there have been good games that have mixed in some shooting parts with other modes of play, and sometimes those shooting parts have been entertaining. (One good example is Vice: Project Doom, and another example is Bayou Billy. They didn't use the Zapper, but I imagine they could have.) I was surprised to see that the shots did not, in fact, slow you down. This is much better support for the Zapper than we had back when we had that submission for Gumshoe. Say what you will about this game, but Gumshoe was way worse to sit through. At least this one was done in 3-4 minutes. You didn't return your own flag in Stage 2. I'm docking style points for that ;-) I don't know how you fired as much as you did in Stage 3 without spending ammo, though, so props for that. I admit I was expecting this game to be more anime-looking and Engrish-y (like Super Dodge Ball) with that title. Oh well.

I only just noticed these posts... somehow I'm not getting notified even though the site says I'm watching the topic. First of all, I vote for "not damageless", though it seems you've already made that choice. Planning deathwarps with only a few lives makes a really interesting challenge. When micro5000 stopped putting up more progress, we were actually discussing how best to do a deathwarp in Stage 3 near the end. Secondly, I watched this WIP. It looks good, but I have a suggestion for a possibly big improvement right at the start. Why don't you collect the Bomb before the radium-plated boots? If it works out, there would be two advantages: (a) you'd double-back less (b) you'd have the Bomb be the primary equipped item, so you wouldn't have to do an item switch to get the remote The downside is that you'd have a harder time avoiding damage since you'd have to go along the top bridge twice, but since you'd be deathwarping at the hard hat area anyway, it probably pays off.

Alright, I've seen this run. It isn't quite as entertaining for me when I don't understand the dialogue, but the movement seems accurate and the fights are good. ALAKTORN's post was really helpful for understanding more about the version differences. I'll say this gets a Yes vote but should be a separate publication.

I haven't watched this yet... I will be getting to it, and I'm looking forward to it (even though I can't make fun of Japanese voice acting as much). However, I am concerned that this run isn't a fair comparison with the previous one if the Japanese version has shorter / missing stages. N?K, do you have any measurements for how much you improved Hathor's run in comparable areas? How much of an improvement would this be if you had the same stages?

For the record, I have absolutely no clue what the beginning of your submission text is referencing... :/ That doesn't affect the quality of the run though. I really like the choices of goals you went with here. It was helpful to see your description of why you went for this instead of arukAdo's goals. Seeing the repeated glitching in that run, just to increase map completion percentage, was the most irritating part of that run for me. This had a good balance of objectives and showed off a lot of the castle. The annotations were also very helpful. I wouldn't want to see them every time I watch the run, so it's great that they can be disabled. You had a good level of depth in those comments that was appropriate for somebody who's mostly casually played SOTN. Thank you for that! I vote Yes for Moons to obsolete arukAdo's full-map completion run. It will mean that we won't have a published run with the best ending, but that doesn't feel like a huge loss to me.

This was a pretty fun-looking "run right for justice" game. I like the boss fights. I'm not particularly familiar with the game, though, so I have two questions: 1) How does your health work? In Stages 4 and 5, you take hits but don't seem to lose health. This seems to be related to the color of your armor, but I couldn't figure out anything else. 2) If the USA version is harder than the Jap version, shouldn't a "hardest difficulty" run use the US version instead? TASVideos doesn't seem to have any clear precedent concerning version choice in this way...

That was blazingly quick. I like the choice of category. I can't really tell how optimal it looks, but it certainly looks quite good now. I think this can qualify for Moons. Nice job!

It's very impressive how you keep returning to this game for improvements, even when they are small ones. The ball room in Bowser's Castle is definitely the most obvious change for me. Nice job!

Wow, this is finally done. Thank you very much as well for the dedication at the end of the submission form. I couldn't ultimately be much help technically, but I've been a fan of this aggravatingly-hard platformer and wanted to see it TASed quite badly. However, that does bring up the most important part of this run: the health-underflow glitch. It clearly makes the run faster and way easier to plan (since you don't have to do health management as much), but it also destroys most of what makes this game interesting: the precise dodging and attacking with the radium-plated boots. Otherwise, you chug along and occasionally detour for some odd items. The glitch makes Worlds 3 and 5 more boring than they have a right to be, and it removes the chance for you to plan more deathwarps. (I have no problem with the wall-walking glitches... the prize world sucks, and you skip most of it, so props to you on that!) I have only one technical question: there's a door in World 5 where you use a key to unlock it. Can't you just crouch-walk through that door like you did in World 2? All in all, I think I'll vote Meh on this. A run that went through this game without the health glitch, even though it would be longer, would most certainly earn a Yes from me in entertainment. EDIT: If you love the strut so much, there's a section in World 2 shortly after most of the scrolling platforms where you strut in the spacesuit right behind a running enemy, right before you have the spike pits with things bouncing out. It looks awesome when you're doing your spacesuit strut and the enemy is also doing that silly running sprite. If somebody can make a .gif for that part, that would be cool.

This is MUCH MUCH better than the previous version. Fights look very quick here. The lag in Stage 3 is nearly gone. The enemy grouping looks more efficient. There may still be improvements left to do in places, but this is now good enough for a first publication! Great job getting some really quick kills on enemies by having them magically glitch away, especially the final boss. That was really awesome. And I agree with kurabupengin... I'd love to see an improvement to the very-old run on the NES version.

Is the bad voice acting done by the same guy who did some TMNT voices? (I can't remember which boss specifically sounded like that off the top of my head.) Or do all the voices sound that way with the old Arcade speakers? This was amusing, if a bit repetitive. I would also like to see a run that goes for in-game time instead and beats the final boss without self-destruction... unlike the Gradius 3 run for SNES, this self-destruct takes a really long time. Good run glitches, especially the elevation from taking damage! I'm voting Yes.

Thanks, ForgoneMoose! The run looks pretty good. I get the feeling boss fights could be a little faster, but that's just a gut reaction and I don't know of any specific improvements. It must be quite hard to work on optimizing usage of double hit and preventing bosses from teleporting if possible. (I'd be curious to see if the doppelganger could be killed before he gets to move to that upper-right area, for instance.) My only disappointment is that there wasn't any real artwork done with crosses / boomerangs when you collect the red orb. That's understandable though. Good job!

Sorry, but is there any encode of this available? This sounds like a really awesome run, though I can never get PSX runs working on my emulators. Thanks!

Somehow this thread got some major updates and my auto-notification didn't kick in. I admit that the glitches are a bit heartbreaking for me, because things like invincibility really destroy a lot of the important gameplay, but I'm thrilled to see major progress. As before, totally count me in for looking over things from a less technical viewpoint. Good luck!

I liked this. It could probably be improved a little more, but that's hard to tell at this point. There are a lot of enemies to fight, so there are complicated route decisions to make. I'm not sure it's best to keep knocking the enemies down, but I don't know the game well enough to have a better way. As for 2-player and such... when that actually gets made, I'll see whether to vote yes on it. Spikestuff, I don't think it's fair to avoid judgement on this run in favor of a category that somebody might not make. You can certainly suggest a 2-player run, and you can say that a 2-player run might obsolete this, but in the meantime we don't have a 2-player run. Judge this run just on its own merits. Good job dimon12321! Keep practicing though!

There is some precedent for working with an easier difficulty level. The most relevant case I can think of is arukAdo's run of Kaze Kiri: Ninja Action. (Spikestuff, I'm not sure if the RCR run is on hardest difficulty...) Another case, which probably is less relevant, is Duke Nukem 64. Another point to consider is that this game has much less resource management in the way that Magical Quest does. You don't have a limited magic meter or firehose meter to manage for boss fights here... the cowboy suit does have limited use of cork shots, but that doesn't really change the strategies at all, it seems. As for the run itself, good job! I was pretty amused by the stuttered look of the new momentum-preserving trick; that really makes a big difference in some places. The occasional zipping spices up the run too. Lag management is great, and you had some clever uses of death. I just need to know: did you figure out how to manipulate that damn turtle miniboss? He's by far the most boring part of the previous run, and he seems more efficient this time, but there are still some wasted actions from him.

At that point, the limiting factor is the remaining clock time. As long as the money gets obtained, solarplex doesn't need to optimize the last delivery speed as much. In fact, I found it pretty funny how incompetent he made the driver look at the very end, where the last passenger complains about how slow the ride was. It stands in good contrast to everything before. ... or do you mean that every stop looks unoptimized? I'm only commenting on the very last one. The run looks quite inhuman, and the sideways air was always fun. Great job with this!

Great job xipo! This was really fun to watch. Stage 4 was probably my favorite, but everything about Stage 7 was great too. I was surprised to see that you seem to use the double-knee glitch a little less. You don't use one in stage 2 after the helicopter. In stage 4, you walk quite a while under the claws before using the double-knee glitch. The one that glitched up stage 6 is awesome though. I'm also surprised to see you didn't use adelikat's trick against the shadow warriors, where you waste a life to get invincibility and punch them both.

There's still a whole lot of walking in this run, but the idea of a lone thief running around Rambo-style gunning down enemies was quite amusing. I don't know, though, whether the use of a single character with the same attack every time made the movie more watchable. Regardless of entertainment changes, great job shaving off about a quarter of the old run!

Thanks for the temp encode, solarplex! Somehow, I think the rerecord count is incorrect on this submission... you couldn't have done this all with 58 rerecords. This was a fun run. It is a shame to see how long the sixth boss takes, but it's definitely better to see it this way than to see all the deaths in the previous run to get Tarma. Great submission text too... now I could actually tell some of the big differences in strategies in your run. Yes vote, and I recommend that this obsolete both Metal Gear 7 runs, since it is both deathless and has a faster time than each.

I finally got a chance to watch this. I was surprised to see that newgame+ didn't seem to make a lot of difference. You skip out on one slow scrolling message before Dracula is revived, but that seems to be about it. Is newgame+ needed for anything else? This does look a lot like the currently published run, but it jumps over a lot more enemies. The crazy resource management isn't there as much in this run, but the optimization looks pretty good! The biggest differences here are the first boss fight (which does NOT use skeleton) and the clever way to skip most of the underground waterway. Thus, this run skips one more boss than the current any% run does (since this run skips Adramelech). I'd probably be interested in a no-DSS-glitch run in the future, but in the meantime, I think this is good. I'm not as worried about the use of newgame+ as I thought I would be. I recommend that this obsolete the current any% run because it has a better route.

I'm glad I didn't read the submission text until watching the encode. That was quite surprising indeed. I love how the ending pops out of absolutely nowhere. Yes vote!

I basically agree with scrimpeh here. This is a good run. It beats Masterjun's run. But it feels like a bad compromise between the any% run that glitches everything out and a 100% deathless trinkets run. I was amused, at first, to hear how the music wouldn't change properly when you got into areas through glitches, though I also got sick of hearing that one theme the whole time. I'm going with Meh on this. It's neat, but for a run trying to show off more of the game, it doesn't feel like it's following the spirit of a full run.
