If this run is published as a separate category, then why does it get the "Notable Improvement" lightning bolt?

Hmm... I am not sure a 1-player run on this game is a very good idea. Two players are more fun and produce a faster run. However, I still watched this, and I tried to compare it to the 1-player Super NES submission from a long time ago by White Gastra (http://tasvideos.org/2046S.html). Here are my comments on your run: STAGE 1 * Inconsistent strategies with the purple monitors. It looks like dashing kicks should always be faster than grabbing them and using knees. * Nice job with Abobo, though, getting the extra hit in before he appears. * It seems the Genesis version has extra congratulations music at the end of stages, making it slower than the SNES version. STAGE 2 * Good entertainment when you have some waiting time (like killing one goon by throwing him over your back) * Dynamite guys are faster in the Genesis version, it seems. Your work with them was impressive! STAGE 3 * I liked seeing you kick the little yellow arrow :-) * This stage seems to lag pretty badly on the Genesis version compared to the SNES. * The kicking glitch on the cable is cool at first but looks cheap when overused. * After your first deaths in the pits, you seem to have some slow fights with the Lindas, and you have avoidable delays killing the cannons on the walls. Overall, that shaft looked sort of slow. * It's not clear the death abuse is actually saving you much time in the long horizontal segment. Unlike in the SNES run, you aren't getting bounced forward each time you die. * Good Roper fight! I especially like the first hit. STAGE 4 * In 4-1, you have a lot of wasted shots. Some of it is for entertainment, but I think you could be a lot more precise taking out the asteroids coming out the back of the ship. I'm not sure if the UFOs could be killed much faster though. * I'm not sure the homing missile saved time in the boss fight. You also switched up targets rather than staying on one target. Do you know how much time that saved? STAGE 5 * Good death skips. STAGE 6 * The second round of goons feels slow, especially when you throw one over your head. * It's good to see that the Shadow Boss has fewer delays in the Genesis version. You still have to wait two times for him to go back and forth in a spiky ball, but that part proceeds more quickly. STAGE 7 * The fights against the enemies in the beginning look sort of sloppy. For instance, you take a lot of time getting a purple monitor to come to your level before kicking it twice. * It looked bad to have the Dark Queen successfully get underground twice in the last boss fight. Were there better ways to deal with the powerup pods to keep them out of the way? -------------------- In summary, I think this is pretty entertaining, but not as much as the SNES version (the music is worse in this version). I'm giving this a Meh for entertainment. However, compared to White Gastra's run, I think the run is moderately worse technically, and I don't think I would recommend it for publication. It's a good effort, but it's not as polished as previous runs.

Thanks for the encode! It was interesting to see that this mode of the game can zip too. The longer fights were fun for a bit, but they did get tedious. You shake back and forth a lot in the fights and in the waiting times, which was a little distracting. However, I still liked seeing the route dominated with underpowered characters, and I'm giving this a Yes vote. I have one question though. When you fight Death in the Mine of Judgement, you slowly get back magic at the end of the fight. Why didn't you spend the rest of your magic to use fireballs and kill Death earlier? It didn't look like you needed to use that magic in The Abyss before you reached a save point anyway.

Derakon: Thanks for the suggestion. I made edits that are similar to what you wrote.

I was still quite entertained despite sound choices. I'm glad to see you've managed to regain the record on your favorite run, Dragonfangs! This looked very smooth. My favorite improvements: * I noticed that we finally have a run that remembered about the screw-attack blocks outside the lift between Brinstar and Norfair :-) * The route changes with suitless Samus were pretty noticeable. It's amazing nobody thought of those before. * The way you handled the breaking glass tunnel was really clever. Out of curiosity, would it be possible to make a separate movie file that selects Stereo sound but then waits in the menu long enough to get the RNG state the same as this run? Hopefully, that would mean the run could be copied without desync. I wouldn't recommend that file for publication, but maybe it's a nice alternative to provide for people who have issues with the sound. (I don't personally care too much, since I never really liked the music of this game anyway.) JXQ: You asked why a system with built-in speakers would even give an option to pick Mono sound. Would it use less power to use Mono? For handheld systems, battery life is pretty important, so maybe the option was put in for nitpicky people about power usage. Another consideration is that maybe Stereo could cause the game to lag more often, but I don't really know if that's the case.

Wow, I'd only seen your first attempts on these stages, I think, so I wasn't expecting the glitching here. It's a bit disappointing to see abuse of the pause glitch in places like the final boss fight, but I understand that it saves you a lot of time and damage. This was really well done. Derakon's totally right that you normally have to go pretty methodically through this game, and I'll add it's usually quite tough to avoid damage. This run is reckless, and I love it for that. My favorite stages were Stage 5 (Ballistic was used to great effect) and the end of Stage 8 (my jaw dropped with the ending). Great job!

I'm glad to see a post here! I don't know enough to make a lot of smart comments on WIPs though... I checked out the upload you just made without comparing it to old runs. This WIP looked pretty good. I really liked how you avoided a spike at the end of 1-2 with a smart enemy bounce. It also looked good to see more upgraded weapons in 1-3. Stark's machine was well-fought, though I wonder if it saves time to avoid the diagonal shots on the right side and only fire straight up at a faster rate. My WIP showed you dying at the end of 2-1. Questions: * Have you figured out how powerup drops are affected? It would be nice if you could get a better weapon for Stark's machine. The speed shoes were also good to see, but they didn't last very long... if you could get them for the start of 2-1 that would be great. * My comment about Stark's machine: does it save time to only fire upwards at the right-side faces?

This was an interesting submission! It's neat to see something from you on the workbench which is unrelated to Bomberman. I think you did a good job with this. The Nicovideo encode also makes this better with how it shows the RNG usage. That being said, I can't vote Yes to this for entertainment. The music gets really old, especially when it doesn't change at the start or end of battles. The boss strategies look all the same. The walking speed is slow, though I liked seeing him zip up the stairs. This gets a high Meh vote, but it's still Meh. Kriole: I imagine that throwing the cross at the boss door changes the character's hitbox in a way that lets him enter the door sooner. He didn't really have a problem with wasting hearts... in fact, it's clear he was deliberately skipping candles earlier to avoid having too many hearts at the end of the game. I don't think it cost him time to collect hearts at all since there doesn't seem to be any speed delay when jumping or landing. In fact, making wasted tosses seems to be useful in changing the RNG. I would've liked to see a few backwards jumps if it could be done with no time loss.

Good point. I could see a case being made for either (a) lots of inaccuracy, or (b) lots of accuracy. There isn't really a middle ground.

As silly as this port is with its abundance of bad voiceovers, the gameplay is still very good. I'll leave it to the judges to determine whether this game is different enough to warrant separate publication. As for me, I'm voting Yes, because I rather enjoyed a less-glitchy runthrough of SMB2 with a new route. I also would love to see how a 100% run looks.

c-square: I understand that getting a low Total Hit Ratio would lower the total time, but I also think it would look sloppy. If this were a game that managed an in-game time, I'd recommend aiming for lowest in-game time as a goal, but that isn't the case. I'd either suggest getting perfect accuracy or missing a lot to deliberately lower the hit rate, but right now we have something in the middle which looks bad. Perhaps the missed shots are for luck manipulation to control enemy spawns? The author isn't saying anything about this. I voted Meh for entertainment, but I suspect there's a lot of improvement possible with this movie. Lag reduction looks badly done, for instance.

Spectacular! I'm glad I took your suggestion to avoid reading the submission comments before watching the run. It made all the random fights in the grass so much more WTF-worthy. I'm also amused how un-glitched your stats are when you finish at the Hall of Fame. Great job. I just have two small questions: (1) Usually bot-done rerecords are discounted in the total count. Do you have any estimate of how many rerecords you actually did yourself? (2) This is more off-topic: is your name based on the James Bond villian from Diamonds are Forever? (described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Wint_and_Mr._Kidd) EDIT: Oh, I have one small request. Your Assembly dump in the submission comments takes a whole lot of space. Could you maybe put that text in a tab so that people can choose whether or not to display it all?

So what does this mean about the movie itself? Is the movie auto-rejected? It wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

As much as I love the Cheetahmen theme song, it isn't enough to make this super entertaining. The onslaught of enemies requires some fairly cheap strategies like staying on top of the blocks as Hercules (Apollo probably had the most interesting stages since the arrows could take out baddies more effectively). All things considered, though, it's a good exercise in health management and boss beat-downs, so I'm voting Meh instead of No. However, from a technical standpoint, great job! I would not have expected this game to be so tough to optimize.

I'll echo the crowd by asking: What in the heck happened? How in the world did Link manage to jump so much? This game doesn't even have a Roc's Feather or Cape. Incredibly amusing new route, and I'm looking forward to seeing the ALttP tricks page updated.

I guess I agree most with Matriks404 here: * I vote "Meh" on entertainment, since the parts when input is still happening are fairly amusing at the end. December 1900 was a very busy time indeed. * Watching the development after input end is incredibly boring but technically amazing. * I like the idea of having this movie in a category for the Vault, but someone could then make a movie aiming for shortest video time (in-game time?), which would use completely different strategies and provide nice variety.

Thanks, MESHUGGAH and AnS, for the responses. I didn't realize this game was meant to be that different from Bionic Commando. I figured calling one of the modes "Superb Joe" meant there would be more intended similarity. MESHUGGAH, I have no issues with your decision of speed over entertainment. I completely support that. It's just a shame the end product wasn't as fun as I would've liked, but then again, that's the way these things go sometimes. It's sort of like what happened with Cross Fire where the more optimal run had to use more repetitive strategies.

This looks pretty good. It's not as entertaining as Superb Joe though, mostly because the enemy density is a lot less most of the time. Also, the more I watched the video, the more I was getting annoyed that the character can grapple but never swings on the grapple. I know that what you did is faster, and I support that, but ultimately it makes for a less enjoyable run. I'm going to have to go with Meh on entertainment, personally; I feel this doesn't really offer anything too rewarding beyond what Superb Joe mode does. Good job with the technical quality though!

Funny enough, I didn't know this run was coming, and when I was flipping through random runs today, I rewatched the published run for this. It may have helped prepare me for this run, because I was fairly familiar with the old route choices and strategies. Holy hell, you've done a great job here. Stage 8 is incredibly streamlined. Stage 17 was a big welcome change (especially since you don't have to whip a salesman four times now in Stage 18), and the new Dracula fight is quite smart. Lastly, with the greater number of hearts you managed to get this time, you could spare some for entertaining weapon usage. This is finally approaching the entertainment level of the NES Castlevania run. (I don't mean anything bad against your run, but the NES run is still utterly spectacular with all its high-score combos.) Yes vote indeed!

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Pretty good! I wish it had the visuals of the Robot Atak game in the series, but this is fairly good for a GBC game. It seems to have surprisingly little lag for all the sprites on screen, probably because only the projectiles have damage hitboxes. It got a little repetitive at points when you run through the same portions of stages more than once. However, there was some good variety and interesting health management. I like knowing that you were able to sequence-break a fairly linear game too. Yes vote. P.S. I'm betting "Base X" is the secret base on Earth. The moon bases are only a backup for Dr. X when he gets his forces thrashed, sort of like how Dr. Wily has a second base in space in the GB Mega Man games.

Not a bad run! I was wondering when this game was going to appear on the workbench. It's very different from Wonder Boy 1, and it is way less polished than Wonder Boy 3. All in all, it has pretty good action. The L+R bug got a bit old near the end, but it didn't completely break the game like I was afraid of. You still had to show off some platforming and enemy dodging / killing. It doesn't look completely optimized to me (it seems you run too far collecting gold bags from defeated bosses, for instance), but I'm going to presume that's more the game's fault than your fault. I suspect this can get improved in the future, but I liked it. I'm voting Yes and would support publication as a first run for this game. On another note, it became pretty clear that Saiyuuki World is basically the same game as this one. Could that game also get improved with an L+R glitch?

This kind of goal used to be called "aims for shortest AVI time", but that terminology is a little outdated now. If the game keeps track of time, you could say it's a run that aims for in-game time instead of realtime... Anyway, nice job with the run!

Fair enough. I think we've established that a number of us don't count the weapon capsules in the usual pacifist goals, though I respect your call on this. You're right that the current description is inaccurate... I'll see if I can find some replacement that is more in line with what the current movie does.

Both "kill nothing unless necessary" and "destroy nothing unless necessary" are, in my opinion, acceptable ways to do pacifist goals. I personally favor the first goal more (and it seems Heidman does too) while boct is more in favor of the second, which is the stricter goal. I don't think there's anything wrong with having that perspective... the Castlevania pacifist run did meet that stricter goal for the most part. I guess it makes sense to me if you think in terms of action movies. There are plenty of action movies where the heroes mow down tons of bad guys along the way (such as The Expendables). There are also plenty of action movies where the good guy causes lots of property damage but doesn't usually kill people (such as Terminator 2 or First Blood). This category of action movies is what I think of as representing pacifist runs. In contrast, there are fairly few action movies out there where property destruction is minimized as well, since it's harder to be entertaining under such strict guidelines.
