I don't have a specific preference. I was thinking sometime around 51:36 is good, when Milon is drifting between the two toy horses. (I don't have access to an emulator so I can't pinpoint frame numbers.) EDIT: Thank you! That one looks good!

Yay for publication! However, can we get a different screenshot? There's so much black in this one that you can't really tell what any sprite on the screen is. (When a screenshot isn't intended to be glitchy, it is good to recognize the on-screen objects.) I recommend getting something around 51:36 or 52:06 of the YouTube encode, showing Milon blowing bubblegum to float.

This game is an amusing train wreck, but only for this length of run. I was pleasantly surprised, though, to see some detailed storyline after the final fight. That may be the main redeeming feature of this whole thing. I voted Meh, and I certainly would not recommend it for any higher tier than Vault. One question, though: I didn't look too closely when you selected your Tier. Did you pick the hardest difficulty? (i.e. the longest option?)

It's not really interesting to see the same move abused, but I will admit this is well-done for speed. As someone else pointed out, I liked seeing how quickly you took a little damage at the start to avoid the Flawless Victory message. I admit I also liked the small bit of variety when Kintaro got hit with an uppercut. The fight against Kung Lao looks the slowest; he takes a while to punch you. Can you make him throw his hat? I had to vote No, since it's not entertaining to me, but I'm glad to see it is technically pretty precise. Send it to the Vault!

Elvenefris: I think that in the first submission for this game, Dooty mentioned that although the sewer route is more out of the way than the construction site, you get to be "Hulked Out" for longer, and that makes up for it. Maybe he has more comments, though. Anyway, Dooty, nice job again! I didn't really notice the changes easily, but I like seeing this game and bosses get trashed. Also, feos, thanks for the encode; I tried watching this in the emulator but my computer can't run BizHawk 1.4.1 at full speed, it seems.

This is better English than you have had before, so you're fine :-) I don't think you answered my question with boss 5, though. I was thinking: if you wait for her to come on the screen more, does she take longer to leave after damage? If that is true, then does the extra time to leave enable you to defeat her in one round without damage?

Not bad. I was worried this was going to be boring, but it's interesting to see how many enemies you have to dodge. I'm not sure the best choices were made to remove lag, but it seems ok for a first attempt. I'm concerned about the boss fights though. * The first boss stays out of your reach a good while. Can you manipulate him to jump lower? (Your refight with him is much better.) * The third boss takes much longer without taking damage. It seems you lose valuable time by jumping to the right away from the tentacles. Could you instead jump over his head and start attacking the other side? Maybe you could finish him in two phases instead of three. * For the fifth boss, she gets away with one hit left in the first round. Could you wait for her to come on screen more before attacking so that it takes her longer for her to leave the screen? Maybe that will finish the fight in one round.

If it's version 1.43 or older, then it probably isn't... have you tried to see if you can get it to sync with Bizhawk or LSNES?

Coconou: I think we all agree that your TAS is probably the most interesting that a pacifist, no-damage run of The Smurfs can be. However, maybe those aren't the best goal choices for the run. There's already another run of a Smurfs game with nearly the same stages on this site. To repeat an older question... how much faster do you think this run could be if you took damage and killed enemies?

I found the pacifist goal less interesting, but I can see how it made the gameplay more challenging. Some of the dodges at the end look pretty good. The game definitely gets better after you save Glasses Smurf; the stages have more variety and greater challenge after that point. I voted a weak Yes. I was glad to see the game had a little more variety than running right, such as the vertical portion of the forest and some good stage layout in the caves level. I'm not sure I really like the run's goals, but I can appreciate the difference. The main question I am curious about is: how does this compare technically to the previously mentioned submission? Can the entire 4-minute difference be explained by taking damage and killing enemies? Lastly, I'm pretty happy to see a run on Les Schtroumpfs in French, actually. I've always liked the French name better. Thank you for making the run, Coconou.

Hmm... I didn't think of that. I'm not entirely sure how to use that, to be honest. It doesn't really matter here, since I got both ROMs and found that the 1986 version worked. As for the run, honestly, it's not really entertaining. The best parts were the collision abuse with the birds and the UFOs in the flying stage, as well as seeing how many enemies you barely dodge at the end (although the menu pause trick feels a little overused). I'm going to have to give this a No vote for entertainment, unfortunately, BUT... I thank you a lot for making this. I've always been curious about what the "intended" path through this game would look like, and it's rewarding to see it, even when the product isn't all that interesting. This could be better, though, with subtitles that point out the most important story points (like the divorce).

I'd like to watch this in the emulator, but there seem to be two ROM versions out there: a 1986 version and a 1990 version. Which one did you use? Or could you put the CRC of your ROM up here? (That should be allowed by the rules.)

I find it comical how crappy this is... for the first few levels. It drags on after a while. Then I saw the really butchered Lakitu and laughed all over again. On the plus side, it doesn't look like your hero even needs to do a flagpole glitch... he just cuts through the bottom anyway, and there's no score countdown of the timer. On the minus, it's a shame to see it's not worth picking up any powerups. I'm voting Meh for entertainment, but I'd say this deserves a spot in the Vault. If the hitboxes are really as bad as you say they are, then some of the fireball-dodging jumps are pretty impressive.

Good try, Diego Montoya. However, if this is trying to be a speedrun, I'm pretty sure it could be quite a bit faster (for instance, by knocking down opponents less often). If it's trying to be a playaround, it doesn't have enough variety.

Nicely done. Not a large improvement, but it looks fast and dangerous. My favorite part is the very end of Stage 3 when you barely dodge the lasers from the pole. The way you get on the ceiling in Stage 4 is cool too. Thank you also for the Metacafe encode!

Aside from the choice of emulator (and the lack of available rerecord count), I like this submission. It's not clear that you pick the best places to walk instead of roll, but I imagine it's a tough route-planning choice. The action looked good, and I don't mind seeing the damage in several stages. Yes vote.

Alright, I've seen this. The game still feels too long for me to keep my interest peaked the whole time, but the movie was very well done. The stage where you keep ahead of the toy horses was especially interesting. Yes vote.

goofydylan8, thank you for bringing up the issue of whether this run is acceptable for publication. As a minor nitpick, though, I figure I should also mention that the poll question is "Did you find this movie entertaining?" It sounds to me like you find the game entertaining, so perhaps you answered No to the wrong question ;-) However, I am quite ok with your reason for putting up a No, and I don't hold that against you. If the run was done on an obsoleted emulator in good faith, does that merit a compromise here, as VanillaCoke suggested? For one thing, kaizoman666 didn't realize his ROM copy was a dump that wouldn't work with BizHawk. I'd be all in favor of saying that the spirit of the law (rather than the letter) was followed here, and then we could have a note in the judgement that says any future obsoletion must be done with Bizhawk or a more recent approved emulator. We've had precedent for things like this (one is the currently published Demon Sword run). In addition, I don't think the Chuck Rock run for the SNES serves as the best example here. From what I gathered, the run could be rejected on technical merit grounds. If that's not the case, I'm certainly fine with bringing that submission back up to probably go in the Vault. Anyway, as for a more relevant comment, it's awesome to see an improvement of this game got made. I have not yet checked it out, but I hope to do so soon. Thank you for making this, kaizoman666, whatever the outcome in the submission queue.

I find that Nico run a little less interesting to watch, but goodness it's surprising. Does this mean we're getting a new submission soon?

Awesome new glitch! I think the run is a little less entertaining though, since I liked seeing Balore and Dimitri getting beaten. (I also don't really like the music in the area where you do the glitch.) However, the speed gain is definitely worth it. Concerning the Julius run, wasn't that run also meant to be more of a chance to show off all the bosses and use fewer glitches? I mean, it can get much faster using the glitch... I'm not sure if it should, though. Perhaps a new Julius run with the zipping glitch should be a separate category.

This is pretty hilarious. However, it does raise this question of whether this constitutes a valid ending to the game. Spikestuff's example of Super Mario World is a good comparison, though in that one, the final screen is actually the screen you would expect to see from a valid completion.

To be fair, MM5 is probably the most interesting TAS among the games from MM3 to MM6, largely because the Super Arrow can be abused well beyond what a realtime run can do. There's lots of opportunities of luck-manipulating weapon powerups just in time for more arrow usage. Also, that game has more out-of-bounds glitches and graphical corruption than the other games. All of that makes it a fairly good game to show off what a TAS can do (back when the Stars meant "recommended for first-timers"). Now that I've seen this run, I agree it's pretty awesome. I didn't know you could kill as many bosses as quickly as you do with the Rush Cannon, and I liked seeing critical hits put to good use. I'm in favor of giving this a star... but that doesn't necessarily mean MM5 should lose its star. Those Star decisions shouldn't be related.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I'm having trouble applying the patch for this hack. Most patches I've seen use an .ips file, but this one has a whole folder of stuff. Since I don't read Japanese, I don't understand the messages the executables spit out when I try running them. Also, there seem to be two versions: MMC3 and MMC5. Which one does this movie use? EDIT: When I downloaded the submission file, it said MMC5. My mistake.

I'm going to admit, I can't really follow Solstice runs very well, so I probably won't be watching this. However, I congratulate you on taking the time out to go back over the run looking for small errors and stylistic changes. That takes dedication, especially for a run that's had quite a number of previous revisions in the site's history. Also, 104 frames is not a bad improvement at all, especially as a percentage of the total movie length. Granted, this site has had 1-frame improvements submitted and published before...

DarkMagnum BangBaew, The TASVideos submission area is for people to submit the runs that beat other runs already on the site (most of the time). If you have a run that is not fast enough yet, we have other resources and places to discuss these runs, such as the main forums. As people have pointed out, this run is slower than many current records. Good luck with your next project, though. Perhaps, as you're working on it, you can go to the main forums and post WIPs (Works In Progress) as you proceed with the run.
