That's a nice discovery to cut the autoscroller short. Hooray for an improvement to the first published TurboGrafx run!

I thought this was pretty fun! The shortcuts were somewhat unexpected, and the close calls with edge hits were good to watch. I think this should get published, and if someone makes a full run through all the stages on an easier difficulty, that should probably also get published alongside this. (It would be a somewhat similar situation to what happened with the Chocobo Racing publications.)

Great improvement! I especially liked the wallclip abuses. The only thing that was less entertaining about this run was that this time, you didn't get any creatures to fly into the Machine willingly at the Stage 3 boss fight ;-) Yes vote.

Wow, this is really smooth. The final boss still feels slow, but there's not much you can do about that. All the bosses from the ghost fight onward look very impressively-manipulated, though. There's noticeably less lag, and the trick about affecting screen scrolling via damage is awesome. Yes vote. Any interest in improving the 2P run of this game?

The game is pretty clunky, but it has some reasonable action. The boss fights are quick, but it's also annoying to see the constant character changing (it's not quite as interesting to watch as the character switching in Knightmare 2). All in all, it's well-played, but the game feels a bit like a bad blend of the overhead parts of Blaster Master and Star Tropics. I'm feeling somewhere between strong Meh and weak Yes.

Even if we treated this as a fighting game, there really aren't that many characters, and you see them over and over. I'm not really sure this game has enough potential for making a run that's entertaining all the way through. Granted, I did like the variety in outside-ring fighting, but it wasn't enough for me to say Yes here. I'm going Meh. Also, I appreciate that you're still making NES runs. I hope you keep it up :-) If you haven't ever tried out any of the Ikari games, they might be good things to experiment with.

This run made me say "Holy crap" at least 10 times. While BLJ's are mind-blowing, it is incredibly impressive on a whole new level to see Mario blast through these obstacles with crazy accuracy and momentum preservation. Tick Tock Clock was probably my favorite map, given how brutally obstacles were skipped with precise wallkicks. Also, let's break Bubble Bobble's record for most authors in a publication ;-) Absolutely a Yes vote. EDIT: When I watched this on emulator, it paused right after the movie ended. I want to disable this, but I can't find the option in Mupen0.5 to disable the pausing.

Alright, I've seen this run. It's fairly entertaining, and this is a fun RPG to watch. I'm not really a Phantasy Star fan, so I wouldn't say the extra visits and dungeons did a whole lot for me, especially when the story is already pretty easy to follow playing the usual speedrun route. I think this is a cool run, and some people will really appreciate it, but I can't really make up my mind whether it should be published on the site. I'm definitely glad you made the run, but I'll abstain from voting.

Wow, so this is basically a 100% run? Interesting idea! I wouldn't have thought that any RPG on the SNES could be done 100% in two hours. I'll probably get a chance to watch this tomorrow. I'm not too familiar with Phantasy Star canon, so some of these references are a little lost on me.

Awesome! I remember when you first submitted a run for this, and I was hoping this would get improved. It's a fun game. This run may be a little less entertaining than the previous one, actually, because of all the abuse of the jumping bug, but it's still a nice run at a pretty nice pace. I saw your YouTube preview, and the sound is still annoying... it's a shame if it's the game's fault. Regardless, the run still deserves a Yes vote.

Hmm... actually, HappyLee is making a good point here. I was willing to go along with some lack of optimization in Brandon's run, because I felt it was fairly minor. However, a 12 second difference is really significant in a stage (compared to the 42-frame improvement from 1-1). However, HappyLee, keep in mind that the first run in a new category doesn't always have to have the same intense level of optimization. After all, the first run is more difficult to produce when there aren't predecessors against which to compare your run. The first run of a game should still have an acceptable level of quality, and it can serve as an inspiration for TASers to improve it. I mean, it didn't feel like Brandon's run was "sloppy" or "easy" to me when I watched it (but I'm not a TASer, and I didn't know about the 12sec improvement either, I guess). You mentioned the minimum score run as well. I think that run gives a really good example of a run that is cool in theory but not in practice. In theory, it's impressive to avoid picking up coins, dodge obstacles, and have spare time to play around in the stage. In practice, though, you just have to waste too much time, and the run becomes monotonous. With this type of run, although the run is slower, it is not too much slower; I still kept my interest throughout. In summary, do I think this is an incredible run of Super Mario Bros? Not really... the warpless run is really the best that SMB has to offer. Is this run a neat idea? Yes, I think so. Is it sufficiently well-played at this point, even if not perfect? I thought so, but I don't have the trained eye that HappyLee and Mars have for improvements.

Small improvements are still improvements nonetheless, and it looks good for a fast-paced puzzler like this. Yes vote.

I had tried watching this movie about a week ago or so, and I couldn't get into it, because I didn't really know what the challenges were. Once I found a good description at http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_3_%26_Knuckles:_The_Challenges , the run became a lot more interesting. Certain challenges felt fairly slow, like the ones where you just have to follow Sonic, but that can't really be helped. (I was pretty surprised, though, how little you could be on screen and yet still not lose points in that one.) I'd say this is generally a publishable hack, but it is really long. However, the run's quality does feel sort of sloppy. I would definitely vote Yes to a more optimized runthrough, but at this point, I'm going with Meh. Nice idea for an April Fool's Day run, though!

As before, I think the LUA interface is cool, and it has nothing to do with whether it's a good stepchart ;-) If you want to have somebody see what's being pressed, and for how long, the DDR layout idea is fairly efficient at showing exactly that. I find it really useful to have that kind of step information, for much the same reason that the Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow run has the published video with memory watch info: it gives the average viewer a chance to appreciate the little details of the run. For instance, I found myself looking at the total # of presses, wondering which stages would have the most presses. One of the criticisms I've seen in this thread is that the run looks like a regular Mario run but sloppier. To me, the "sloppy" parts were actually surprising in a good way. When something seemed unoptimized to me, I'd try and guess why Brandon was doing it. Soon after, I'd see something like approaching enemies (or one of Brandon's subtitles), and it would clear up my confusion. If I didn't have that initial moment of confusion, I'd be less impressed afterward with the ingenuity of the run. Having the input display available also made it much easier for me to catch those little subtleties. I feel that this category really lends itself well to the theme of this site: playing beyond human means. Very few human players could keep a running tally in their head of all the presses they've made, so this is totally a type of run that shows off what TASing can do. It's ingenious in its own way, and I'm heartily voting Yes again. Even if the run can be improved a little time-wise, as HappyLee is showing, I'd say this is solid enough for publication right now. There can always be improvements submitted later.

Wow! Spectacular work. The rerecord count, and the crazy work to save a platform cycle at Wing Fortress, only goes to show how impressive your effort is at these runs. Major props to GlitchMan as well for these huge time-saving zips.

Now that interest seems to be sparking up again with this, I just wanted to chime in and say I'm quite excited to see progress on this! I don't think I know enough to be a real technical help, but I'm happy to encourage. Given how tricky this game is to run, would it make sense to get an improved run submitted soon, even if some further improvements are possible? (It would be sort of like what happened with Rockin Kats, and what should've happened with Legend of Toki.) That can help more people to get involved with the game.

I appreciate that you took the time to work out three completely different strategies. The any% run is really the most interesting out of the 3, though, given how long the delays are between question rounds. Even then, the game's not that interesting... but it is better than I expected, I admit. Maybe it's because Rare did the music. The manipulation looks pretty good. I wish the final obstacle course could be more exciting, but that can't be helped. I'd say this gets a Meh.

It's good to see people are improving the boss fights in this run. I'm looking forward to further improvements. (This scenario reminds me a little of the submissions for Little Nemo. There was a submission that beat the published run at the time, but it was too sloppy in other places.) Also, are any of you interested in improving the 2-player run on the original game? Some months ago, Aglar was looking for a partner to help with running that game, and from the looks of things on the game's thread, that run hasn't seemed to make much progress yet.

This was quite nice! The bomb staircase tricks definitely loo very crafty. The run felt slowest in the ice levels, but there was a fairly good pace and good density of tricks. 5-1 was definitely the highlight. Yes vote. Also, thanks to zsvp for a very nice nicovideo encode!

This was fairly amusing. It got a little old, but I was always surprised that you'd deliberately want to go to walls. Hooray for screwy physics engines. I could go either way about this one, so I'm going with Meh.

May I suggest that instead of saying "Sonic, no Ultraspindash", we call this run "Sonic, low glitch"? We have a run for Pulseman that is tagged as "low glitch", and I think the terminology is cleaner. Also, the purpose of leaving out Ultraspindashing is the same as the reason for avoiding the screen-jerk bug in Pulseman: take out one large glitch that drastically changes gameplay. EDIT: I just finished watching this movie. Very nice! There was still a fair bit of offscreen action, but by and large, this movie is actually watchable without a camhack. You do get a better chance to appreciate the stage design. My favorite parts were the Mechaknuckles fight (I just like how comically he takes damage) and Egg Rocket 1. It was very impressive to see an unglitched run through that with some very precise maneuvers. Yes vote for sure.

(http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. The Chozodia and Space Pirate portions were more boring
There's very little to make them interesting once you've finished the stealth portion; they're just a long linear path with no interesting side-routes, variety in terrain or enemies, or hidden items. The entire "epilogue" (all the stuff after the MB escape) is vastly weaker than the rest of the game.
Oh sure, I understand that. That's exactly why that portion of the run is significantly more fun with more items and abilities. ;-) The lack of Speed Booster does hurt that part. Fortunately, though, that one part isn't so boring as to spoil the rest of the run. On a side note, it alwys irked me with this game that power bombs were entirely optional in any% runs.

Finding a glitch or a loophole in a commercial game that went through professional QA is a feat worthy of display. Finding a glitch or a loophole in an amateurish fan game is not surprising at all. Ok, there's some nontrivial luck manipulation involved, but King's Bounty did it faster, and Monopoly did it better. No
by that logic, every ROM Hack or non-commercial game ever made should be unpublished.
I don't think that follows. There's also the issues of novelty and how impressive the manipulation is. * Some hacks are truly impressive and make interesting runs. We have several cool published runs of hacks and non-commercial games. This hack is not really one of them, as previous "full run" submissions have shown. * The only appeal this run really has is the short bit of luck manipulation. I think Moozooh and Tub raise really good points about how this run isn't as interesting: it's not botted to death like King's Bounty, and the result is less visually interesting than Monopoly. Granted, I still like this run, and I think part of my appreciation comes from knowing how obnoxious this game is when played normally. However, I do admit it's not really as impressive as I thought at first. I'm ok with sticking to my Yes vote (barely), but I really have to give Moozooh and Tub credit for raising some good points. Thanks, you two!

I was pretty amused by this, especially as the density of Noids and rockets got more ridiculous. Heck, the sheer idea that Noids have bazookas is pretty funny. I figure that merits a Yes vote.

It's creepily silent at first, but then it's pretty awesome. Is that Dragonforce? It seems like Through The Fire And Flames.
