Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. This is strange, normally I have to defend my movie here. That is what I get for a long submission text.
First off: what AnS said. Second: when there's such a clear difference between the previous submission and this one, it makes us that much happier with the end result. I imagine this movie may not have gotten the same reception if it were the first submission (though I still would've really liked it.) Third: what Nach said.

Wow, that's a really incredible rerecord ratio and a significant time savings! I think I'll have to wait, though, until there's more submission text before I can check this out, because glitchy runs like these are generally quite confusing without explanation. Also, I'm not really familiar with the game.

That was nuts! The speedier movement of Nightcrawler was awesome to see, and things looked quite smooth. Does the use of the second player in the last stage speed anything up, or is it only for entertainment? (If it costs a little time, I'm cool with the speed-entertainment tradeoff.) Yes vote. Congrats on a big improvement of an old movie!

I personally prefer this to the other run. I'd be in favor of this obsoleting the "Bad End" run, but I don't have a strong preference. It would be sort of like the situation that happened with the SNES Aladdin runs, where the run collecting all red gems obsoleted the any% run.

Thanks for the youku encode! I enjoyed the run. It's a bit of a shame, though, that by going so fast, you miss out on one of the things that makes this game cool: the crazy desperation attacks bosses do. Regardless, this definitely gets a Yes vote.

As someone who was ardently following the discussion topic for this game after the previous submission, I saw this already before this submission. I could hardly be happier with the way this has turned out. This run kills a lot more enemies than the previous, which makes it a lot more entertaining. Some of the route choices were quite surprising. Thank you so much for making the run I wish I could make.

I know that Kumquat has corrected people about her gender as well (I recall seeing this in a submission forum for one of her movies), so I figure it's fine to list that publicly. But anyway, that's not too important. I didn't get to comment on this movie, but I liked what I saw, and I'm looking forward to an improvement!

That was pretty pleasant! Stages 4 and 5 were generally more entertaining. I especially like the miniboss in Stage 5 where you're effectively karate-chopping the princess over and over. That might make a funny screenshot. Thanks for making this, and you get a Yes vote!

Oh wow, I saw the SDA segmented speedrun of this that Preddy did, and I loved this Megaman ripoff. Would somebody please encode this?

Alright, I got to watch this. Although the dual gargoyle fight is a little slower, I think it also looks more impressive. I like the asymmetric nature of the two when you defeat them. (It definitely gives the impression of a risky player.) Here's my other comments. Guardian of cave before Lethe: * That's a really good-looking fight. That guy is a bastard in normal play, and it's really cool that you stay in his face while he waits for his shot to return. Heck, that battle may give a good screenshot. Cave before Lethe: No comments Lethe's palace of mirrors: * It looks like you took my suggestion of having the tornados released lower in jumps. It looks good, especially in the giant vertical room (the third one, I think)! Overall, this stage really gives a chance for masterful Tornado usage to shine. * Good idea to take the lower route in the room with the falling bridge. * YES YES YES you got the Doppelganger to stay in his true form! That battle looks awesome. (The submission comments may want to remind users that he's not vulnerable until he shows his true self... attacking the gargoyle form damages you, actually!) Naga's Path and Loosekeep: * Much better route through the last vertical stretch (on the first travel through the path) * I find it amusing you visit Verona first in Loosekeep, just because I always went to Rushifell first. I trust you did the fastest thing (or it's an arbitrary choice). * On the return through Naga's Path in the last ascent, I'm guessing the time you gain from Tornado doesn't make up for two extra weapon switches, but I'm not sure. I imagine you tested this. Goza's stage: * I find it stylistically attractive how long you drift with the wings in places before landing. It's probably faster too to land less often, I'm guessing... it seems Firebrand has sticky landings. * I really like the Tornado ascent where you damage-boost off the ghost, and he later dies in your Tornado :-) The weapon switches look like they produce as little lag as possible (stupid laggy Buster for the bricks...) * Out of curiosity, is it less laggy when the stage is in darkness? If so, you could kill the second candle ghost earlier. * The breaking of the last brick wall looks sort of bad... you wait a little for the second block on the ground to be destroyed before jumping. Would it be faster to blow up one ground, then two on middle level, and then the last one on the ground? In other words, you use the order 2 3 1 4 instead of 3 4 1 2 * Goza was completely pwned. His battle would also yield good screenshots. Breager's stage: * Wow at dodging the arrows in that vertical rise while jumping between Tornados. That's hardly possible in real-time, I think. Actually, all of your vertical shaft rises are quite impressive. * Did you stand on the edge of a spike without taking damage? :-o * The last vertical shaft seems to have slower jumps because you're taking them higher. Is this necessary to dodge the shots by the wall monsters? * The King Breager fight is always a slog. I can't really see any better strategy though. Tornado doesn't seem like it would help you at all. Anyway, that's all I have.

I'll check it out tonight. You work fast! Also, I'm ok with losing 8 frames on the boss... darn RNG.

Nice! That was some quick work! Some comments: Night Drop Forest: * I'm surprised it paid off to take damage at the top level instead of taking it near the boss's entrance. It really seems you lose a lot of time at the boss's entrance. * The damage in the slow-rising shaft was really smart. On the way to Desert Sittem: * Isn't it faster to take damage from the first enemy's drop? Desert Sittem: * Glad to see you change weapons in the stage at the start, instead of in the overworld menu like your previous submission. * Nice job getting the first blue bottle to avoid producing a ghost. That obviously helped reduce lag. The second bottle was well-handled too. * What does the missed shot with the Buster do midway through the stage? * WAY better bossfight than your previous run. Nice job keeping him jumping! No comments on the way to the King's Palace or the King's Palace Mt. Imaus: * WAY way better Tornado usage! That was really smooth. * Lol at the path over the spikes to reduce lag ;-) Concerning the dual boss, thanks for trying an approach where you target each individually. Good to know it doesn't work. As for the boss behavior, I vaguely recall that whether these guys do short or fast movements depends on what your y-position is relative to them when their movement pattern starts. After all, I think their fast flights always cause them to end at the same y-position as when they started. Thus, you may be able to get them to go slowly by delaying a jump until they've started a slow descent.

This does feel like a slower Sonic game when you leave out ultra-spindashes. However, it was still pretty fun. The glitches are the end were awesome. Nice job!

Spectacular. The spike shortcut is really clever, and it's quite impressive that you clear the top side with just a little flight power left. The boss fight is also quite good... most times I've ever gotten the boss to that platform in real time have done more harm than good ;-) Keep it up!

Oh yeah, health refills after bosses. (It may even refill when you complete stages without bosses, like the river of flame... it's worth checking.) As for this new WIP, things look pretty good! (with the exception of the new damage-taking opportunities you mention). One comment, though, is that you're sometimes bumping walls in the overworld. Is that deliberate?

Nice, you even improved the jumps to Argob's Pot! THIS is really looking like a true TAS of the game! It didn't feel to me like there were significant pauses when you weren't moving right (I watched at full speed though). This is also significantly more entertaining watching you shoot a bunch more enemies, as watching almost becomes a game of guessing which enemies you'll actually kill. I also notice you took damage. In this case, it actually looked pretty slick! There's a gold vial in that first stage that gives you a bonus life heart, but it's pretty far out of the way... I don't think you'd save anywhere close to enough time from damage boosts to justify getting the gold vial. Great work, and keep it up!

Sure, I'll help out your new run! I definitely think the new run will be at least good enough to be published with a couple strategy changes. Further posts for now will go in the thread you linked.

Alright, I finally watched this. I'm glad I was able to inspire this run. (In fact, I removed mention of the run from my sig because it got done!) However, I'm not yet sure what to vote. First of all, there are definitely some very nice parts:
  • Not taking damage is very tricky to do in this game, given how the enemy layout tends to require tricky movements. Some boss fights look especially good, such as King Breager and Goza. I also liked the dual creature fight in Mt. Imaus.
  • You jumped off of spikes sometimes (a couple times in Mt. Imaus by the pillars, and once in the last stage). That was cool.
  • Fighting bosses right in front of their faces is impressive, given that Firebrand moves too slowly to do effective dodging in many cases.
Things that I'm not really sure with:
  • By avoiding damage, you noticeably slow down in the forest stage to dodge obstacles. I probably would've taken damage to boost through, but you're welcome to your stylistic choice.
  • With the Mt. Imaus boss, I'm curious whether it would be faster to get in one creature's face first and fire very quickly. The other can then be made to fly at you and be close up for more shots.
And now, the parts that I'm pretty sure can be done better:
  • As Derakon mentions, Tornado is pretty under-utilized. It would definitely make the big vertical shaft in Mt. Imaus faster (you just ride a levitating platform during that part), and I'm pretty sure it would speed up Naga's Path at the end.
  • I've gotten Doppleganger to stay his true self two turns in a row and avoid firing a fireball. That would speed up that fight tremendously.
  • Can the Desert Sittem boss be manipulated to avoid creating the little mini-things? I'm pretty sure he's invincible for less time when he does his dash.
  • When rising up big shafts with Tornado or Claw, you tend to use a maximum-height jump and zip up to the top of the platform you created. Since you decelerate to a slow speed at the top, wouldn't it be faster to make more shorter jumps?
In any case, you've taken a fairly clunky game and made it look pretty good. I'm not sure if it's improvable enough to vote Meh at this point. I will say, though, that if you attempt an improvement of any of this, I'd be thrilled to offer support and observations (I didn't know you were making this run until today... :-( ).

This is probably one of my favorite NES games to casually play. I tried speedrunning it myself on console with fairly bad results. If I ever got the chance to actually learn to TAS, I would want to run this game. Needless to say, I'm thrilled that you made this run, goofydylan8! However, I can't watch it until I'm home from work. I'll add comments later. By the way, could you provide some details about how to maximize the horizontal distance you get from flying with limited wing power? I could never really figure out if it made more sense to keep starting and stopping flight or just to fly in one continuous motion. (This is important for the big gap you have to cross on the way to Desert Sittem.)

I personally don't really care whether damage is taken or not. Damage only really helps in one stage of the run, and that stage looks smooth enough now without damage. Anyway, nice job touching up the run! The 4-1 path was pretty cool, and the management of rolling power in 1-3 looked quite a bit better. I vote Yes.

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Thanks for the encode, natt! I watched the published movie before this to be able to compare these movies better. This movie is significantly more optimized. A lot less momentum is lost doing repeated jumps. Boss fights are well-manipulated, so that you're usually closer to the exit when the final blow is dealt. You take damage at a much better time in Stage 5. And the final boss fight is incredibly awesome with how reckless it looks. Nice going, and Yes vote! Oh, and I like that you still take the time to collect all the stars.

It's fairly hard for me to tell the improvements, though any technical improvement to this game is pretty impressive with all the ammo drops. Entertainment-wise, I think you did alright compared to the published run. Keeping klmz's dancing in Stage 5 was awesome. Your dancing in the Stage 1 boss was ok (I liked seeing shots get used), but I think you were a little off tempo. Regardless, Yes vote. It's just difficult to be as impressive when klmz's run was so strong compared to its predecessor.

Nice glitch at the end of the final fight. That fight looks pretty good too! Yes vote. Thank you very much for the encode, natt!

Thanks for the encode! (I haven't yet gotten a chance to set up BizHawk, and I'm not sure my computer could run it at full speed yet.) Anyway, as to the actual TAS, it's somehow much more interesting while only being a few seconds shorter. I think the weaving between enemies was much more captivating. The use of the fairy is a very nice touch. Also, I'm ok with the speed-entertainment tradeoff you made with the final ship death. There's no one clear reason to pick any method over any other, so it all comes down to taste. It's not like somebody could obsolete this movie just by stopping input earlier... that change would not be considered sufficient improvement to get accepted. I vote Yes.
