sgrunt and Hoandjzj: Thanks for the help! I ended up watching the encode after all, but I'll check these ideas out. First of all, I must say this was a pretty entertaining run. The play quality and route look good, though it's tough to tell whether it would be faster to find different times to refill ammo and health. The run becomes especially more interesting after you get the Speed Booster, and you do some very cool things with it. Thank you, Hoandjzj, for making the run, whether or not this gets published here. However, it seems likely that people will only want one hack of SM published (see the judging decision for Mockingbird, as well as discussion around Rockman No Constancy). Given that, here are my plusses and minusses of this hack compared to Mockingbird. Plusses:
  • More interesting map layout and variety
  • Less backtracking
  • Fewer instances where you lose significant time dodging enemies
Minusses:
  • Same complaints about the graphics that sgrunt mentioned
  • Boss fights are generally less interesting. Phantoon in Mockingbird was much more entertaining than Ridley in this game.
  • Mockingbird looks like more of a challenge, especially early in the game. The enemy dodging in it is more impressive, where as in this game you run into very few enemies for a long time.
I guess I would be fine with any verdict that happens to this hack, given all the points above. I vote Meh.

Very nice! I like the pickup of the baby in stages 3 and 4. However, there's just one small problem: This is supposed to be the story of Moses, not Jesus. Moses is known for parting the sea, not walking on it! Yes vote.

I'm trying to watch this in my emulator, but I'm having trouble with the patch. My copy of the Super Metroid ROM seems to be fine, but when I apply the patch, snes9x says I have a bad checksum, displays a garbled first screen, and then does nothing else. I have SNESTool, and I know I used it to fix Super Metroid Mockingbird by deleting a header, but that doesn't seem to be working here. Can anyone help?

Wow. This is not only so much faster than the currently published run; almost everything about it is different. There's much less character changing and the voice effects that go with it. The battles are frantic. The route also seems completely different. Could somebody more familiar with the game explain more of what's going on here? I'm curious how the players are all of a sudden able to dash a lot near the end. Regardless, this is a clear Yes vote. Very nice job!

Hahaha, this was funny. I like how ridiculous the game's color choices are, like the pink desert. Also, the mom has really thick arms for a woman. There's some nontrivial variety in scenery and enemy dodging, and the game is only 2 minutes long. I was sufficiently entertained to vote Yes. I wouldn't want to see any more of this though.

Very nice! 6-4 and 7-4 were probably my favorite stages. I liked every time you killed two enemies with a single fireball. Just two questions though: * Do the "early-time-countdown" glitches from SMB1 warpless (the shell glitch, the vine glitch, etc.) fail to work in this version? * Why do you pick "Save & Continue" after 8-4 instead of just "Continue"?

I can't really spot the improvements watching this, but nice job with the manipulation nonetheless. Yes vote for improving an old short run by a significant amount.

Pretty nice! It's certainly not as fun as the 2p run, but this looked quite solid. It wasn't really clear why you were picking up so many boxes that you just threw upward, but I figure it was for subpixel reasons. Yes vote. Also, for the 2p run, have you asked dragonxyk if he'd like to join you? After all, he made the last 2p run.

Hahaha... Aqfaq, I see your taste in short and bad games is still quite alive! As much as I liked the guy's gigantic head when he solves questions correctly, and although the minigame was cool, this predictably receives a No vote. Nice choice though. Also, for those of you who haven't seen Aqfaq's previous "short and bad games" submissions, I recommend watching this and this.

Wow, this was incredible. The beginning stages weren't as interesting as the beginning stages from some of the other games, but the game's second half is incredible. The fight against the big alien machine shooting the giant laser balls is a definite highlight. Yes vote. x2poet, at this point, you're my clear choice for Arcade TASer Of The Year, and possibly for TASer Of The Year in general! Also, thanks for the encode, ShadowWraith!

Sir VG: Disabling the timer would certainly be a nice little time-saver. However, I think it's fine to keep the timer, since it gives a clear, easy-to-spot indication of how quickly the level was completed. (Besides, don't speedrunners like tracking level times anyway?) I'd classify this as a speed-entertainment tradeoff. fsvgm777: Thanks for the encode! zggzdydp: Nice run! I loved seeing how many boomerangs you could use in the later bossfights. Yes vote.

Pretty nice improvement! It's good to see more copter flying, especially in the first few stages. You made the boss battles more interesting too (especially in Stage 2). Stage 6 was less interesting this time (the wobbling on the carts was overdone), but it's understandable if you're trying to reduce lag. I vote Yes.

Now Dig Dug is a landscaper? ;-) This run is pretty boring. It reminds me of The New Ghostbusters II but has less variety. Also, as NitroGenesis just showed, the run could be a lot faster (even if you don't use death to save time). I'm voting No.

Thanks for the temporary encode, Master of Pigs! Unfortunately, the game isn't really interesting to watch. (It does seem sort of fun to play, especially if you purchase and use more spells.) The boss fights seem pretty good, though. The one glitch with the scorpion fight was cool. Some basic questions and comments:
  • There is a way to skip the opening Codemasters logo. Our currently-published runs for the ALADDIN Deck Enhancer (the Dizzy game, and Linus Spacehead's Cosmic Crusade) both use that skip. Maybe you can edit this skip into your movie.
  • I like the idea of going for high score as a second goal. With this game, though, that doesn't involve a lot of skill (as opposed to games where you can make combos).
  • There are several times when many enemies on the screen and the game lags a lot. It would look better to kill more enemies to reduce lag, even if you miss a few bones as a result.
  • How do you choose which bosses are attacked with the Light Spell?
  • How does your choice of shop door work? It seems like it should always be faster to go to a shop than to walk to the Exit sign. (In fact, what do you use to pay the shopkeeper?)

Thank you for the encode, sgrunt! This was downright amazing. It's great to see a Megaman game which doesn't really need to take damage to save time. The weapon usage was amazing, particularly with the Commando Bomb. (I only wish Solar Man's weapon could get used more...) Absolutely a Yes vote. For a screenshot, I would actually suggest that one time in Wily 1 where the Rush Jet is used in a narrow tunnel to ride over a Metool ("hard hat" enemy). One last question, though. Why is the regular weapon used in the miniboss refights of Wily 2, instead of using special weapons like in the first fights and refueling later?

Nice job! It took me a while to realize that when you drop down or come off a staircase, the game forces you to walk a square before you can turn around. Before that, I was wondering why you took so many steps that seemed out of the way. Anyway, this run is long, but each part is very good (sort of like Aqfaq's run of The Humans). I think this earned a Yes vote. Also, I have some alternate screenshot suggestions. I think that it would be nice to have a screenshot from the end of a stage where Bugs is cheering. I found these stages to have especially interesting endings: 23, 27, 42.

Ok, I managed to update my emulator and watch this movie. Much better job with the last boss, and I like how you ended the movie with a clear demonstration of hitbox abuse. Yes vote. However, I still think this could be better by firing the boomerangs straight up sometimes (maybe straight down is possible if you're in the air? I don't remember). It would make the swimming and skateboarding sections better, and it may improve the third boss fight.

I think this is pretty good as is. The extra 10 seconds adds a nice touch with what would otherwise be just standing still. Anyway, you asked which deaths seemed out of place. I rewatched this and made a list of the deaths which didn't seem to save time and didn't look like they were purely speed-entertainment tradeoffs. Frame counts are very approximate. Frame 17200 - Stage 2: Billy dies on the motorbike. 33600 - Stage 3-3: Billy dies from electricity on a rope. 41000 - Stage 4-1: Pimple dies in the spaceship. 52000 - Stage 5: Pimple dies during some flying antics. 55200 - Stage 5: Pimple dies before fighting Robo-Manus. 62000 - Stage 7: Billy dies before the Dark Queen appears.

Would anybody like to make an encode of this? At the moment, I can't download a new version of snes9x to run this movie. However, congratulations on improving the last boss. That was my only real worry with the last movie.

I finally got around to watching this. Much thanks for the encode in the submission! As for the run, at first, I was worried it was just going to feel like the SNES run by White Gastra. However, the style in this run is amazing. I'm very impressed by the playfulness of the two players... making one a Toad and one a Dragon was also a very good choice. There was hardly a dull moment. Stage 3 was especially impressive with the death abuse for crossing gaps quicker than intended. I do think that some deaths looked particularly out of place, but they didn't distract from the movie too much. I'm also fine if those deaths aid in luck manipulation. Also, the ending playaround is fine by me... as DarkKobold said, the game will end at the same time regardless of whether there is a playaround or not, and there isn't anything creative to do that ends the input way earlier than expected. Very nice job, feos! I'm happy to vote Yes on this. What I don't know, however, is whether this should be published alongside the SNES run or obsolete it. Historically, the NES version of the game was made first, and we tend to prefer games made on the original version.

Not exactly. I just felt, by the comments, that this case is similar to Tiny Toons Adventures where there was improvements to be made and you did it. In this case it could be TASeditor, but if he is not going to do it, maybe another taser could give it a shot.
No it's not similar.Yunshui is my friend. He only care about whether the game's movie could be published but not who did. So he supported me improve it. I don't like obseleting others' run except for my favorite games. And if TASeditor want my improvement,I would be glad to accept this project.
Very honorable, x2poet. I think this information should probably be placed in the thread for Tiny Toons Adventures, if it isn't there already. It may make your intentions clearer. As for this run, TASEditor, do you think you could update the final boss fight to use fewer phases? I think that's the biggest concern I have.

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! Quite nice! I like that the Sphinx's answer is different this time. I also can't remember if the last run used a wrong answer with the Sphinx to backtrack... that was a nice touch.

I don't really have any ideas, but I'd be happily encouraging this run! This is something that I'm pretty sure a few people have been waiting a long time to see done well. Lag reduction is going to be a pain, unfortunately.

Edmund: I think the hammers on the last boss were just to demonstrate the "tink" sound of hitting the invulnerable boss. That boss isn't random, so the hammers weren't luck manipulation, I think. TASeditor: Unfortunately, if you lose 95 frames from slower movement, gaining 60 frames on the score counting isn't worth it. Unless there's something else I'm missing? Anyway, pretty nice job with this. I played this game, and it's definitely easier than the NES Adventure Island games, but I hate the music of this game. There's also a lot less variety in this game. If I learned how to make TASes, I would run this game. ---- Here are some level comments I thought might help: 1-1: You seem like you run up a hill briefly. Doesn't this slow you down? 1-2: You look like you create lag at the last waterfall by shooting boomerangs. 2-1: This level is nice. Good job killing a flying bird with a boomerang behind you. 2-3: It might have been more interesting to shoot vertically and try to kill two enemies with one shot in the beginning. Letting the enemy go looked bad. 3-1: That was a fun climb! If only more levels were like this... 3-3: The exit from the mine cart seems like it should be faster... that looks pretty good though. 3-Boss: Nice job getting inside the dragon! I didn't know that was possible! 4-2: Even better than 3-1! It was funny to see you hit the rocks. 4-3: You could definitely kill the enemies you missed if you did a vertical shot. I'm pretty sure it's possible underwater (hopefully it doesn't produce lag). You grabbed too much fruit in this stage. 4-Boss: Nice strategy! 5-2: Nice job slightly falling into the spike pits. 5-3: Pretty nice! 5-Boss: Nice job with the first form! For the second form, though, it looks like you should've been able to kill it two jumps sooner if you jump across the pit as it leaps. ---- Thanks for the run and the encode! I'm not yet sure what to vote, though, since this game is pretty slow. It does get better near the end.
