This looks really nice. My favorite part is still fighting the crazy machinegun guy in Stage 3 with knives and jumping on his head with Heavy Machineguns. The final fight is great too, and a screenshot should probably come from that. Whether or not I agree with the new rule concerning Arcade continues, I'm entertained by this run, and it looks well made. Yes vote.

Thanks for the encodes! This is a really good choice of Arcade game. The characters and voices are pretty funny, and the action is fun to follow. The B attacks are cool too. Easy Yes vote.

FerretFaucet, thank you for your effort, but you uploaded an encode of the original Metal Slug! This thread is about Metal Slug X (which is sort of the sequel). I was glad to vote Yes for the run beforehand with deaths, and I'm pretty sure I'd be happy to vote Yes for a deathless run, even if it takes a little more time. I'll wait for an encode of it to pop up before casting the vote, though. By the way, even though I'm personally for using death and continues in Arcade games, it was very interesting to see good arguments against continues in Arcade games. Moozooh, you especially deserve thanks for doing a wonderful job at getting directly to some important points without getting angry or using attacks. I think that deserves some special recognition.

Thanks for the YouTube link! This was spectacular. The playarounds on 3-8 and 5-1 merit a Yes vote all by themselves, and the input ending was really clever. Out of curiosity, there's been one No vote lately on a bunch of these runs. What's objectionable here?

I would also need an encode before watching this, as I can't get FBA working on my computer. I do look forward to seeing this!

Ok, thanks for the explanations, DarkKobold. If the Genesis run wasn't published, I'd certainly vote Yes to this. However, in comparison to the Genesis run, I don't feel there's a clearly better run here. The missed shots may not have been your fault, but they don't look as good. The multiplayer aspect doesn't seem as important for this game, since the players hang out together a lot of the time (as opposed to beat-em-ups like Michael Jackson Moonwalker, where each has time to kick the asses of different groups). I'm going to vote Meh. I'd prefer that this movie not obsolete the Genesis run, but I don't care way too much whether it gets published alongside. Nice run, in any case.

Pretty good job! The changes aren't all that noticeable to me, but it's a nice run. Yes vote, and I also like Dooty's suggested screenshot. Is anyone planning on improving the X-Men 2: Clone Wars run?

Thanks for the encode! I'm not really sure how I feel about this run. On the plus side: * Three-player action is cool. * In this version of the game, it's actually worthwhile to use multiple bombs on boss fights, unlike in the Genesis run. This makes powerup planning more interesting. * I like the flamethrower :-) * The graphics are definitely better than the Genesis version. The shirtless action shots between stages are pretty amusing. On the other hand: * There seem to be a lot of missed shots, particularly when riding jeeps. It looks sloppier. * The characters have worse weapons for more stages in the run. * Would taking damage be faster in some spots? For instance, the Genesis run uses damage to go through lasers and to skip fighting some vehicles. * I think the music is actually worse in this version. I'm not sure what to vote yet. I do think this is a pretty good run though. Another question: would this run obsolete the Genesis version of Mercs? Generally, the precedent here is to only keep the original version of the game when the two versions have the same gameplay (however, there's both the Genesis and Arcade versions of Ghouls and Ghosts published on the site...) Lastly, does anyone know why the game would actually FORBID selling the arcade game in North America? It sounds like that's a silly way to lose a bunch of potential business.

Wow! This run serves as a perfect example of what a TAS is meant to do: show off what inhuman precision can do to a game. I really appreciate that the run isn't glitchy, just incredibly fast. To stretch an analogy, this run is to puzzle games what Biker Mice From Mars is to racing games. I also recommend watching a game review along with this movie, so that you roughly see how the game was intended to be played. I did find the run getting repetitive, as ais523 mentioned. Watching this in a slower speed would probably still be entertaining. For me, watching the map helped, so that you can actually trace how fast Ivy is going. Also, the last stages are particularly impressive and not as hard to follow (10-2 comes to mind). Thank you very much, Ryuto! Yes vote.

I'm not entirely sure I understand how this game works. The opposing boxer is swinging at you, but I don't think I see your player doing anything to dodge the attack. How does the game decide whether you get hit? That aside, this is pretty amusing. It's really funny how you found that damage range from 140 to 141 that keeps the opponent from getting up. Also, the fights are varied enough to keep this interesting. Yes vote, and nice job!

If the game could draw blond hair (in the credits), why does the player's character looks like a brown-haired kid wearing a tinfoil hat? And they made the Christmas tree scary at the top? I'm utterly baffled by this game's artistic choices. But anyway, I have to agree that this doesn't make good TAS material. Some AVGN-reviewed games have done well here, but that's because in those games, we see a TAS player dominate a normally-frustrating game. Here, though, good play doesn't actually look all that entertaining.

The playground looks good! However, maybe I'm missing something. I thought movies in PCSX could be hexed to work with PSXjin. This would mean you wouldn't need to restart the run. Oh well, guess not.

The distinction between "door-warping" vs. "wall-sinking" glitches made sense to me when the full Maxim run was done. This submission is just using that same allowed set of glitches. It made for a pretty nice run, and I think JXQ got a pretty good summary of it in his post. This run has a good pace and shows off plenty of the game. I'm in favor of publishing this alongside our current runs.

All the paths through this game have tons of waiting time while the bosses do invincible animations. That's especially annoying here with the doctor's "creations" when you choose the Fight path. However, it was also pretty funny how quickly the creatures would get destroyed. The last stage's fights were also amazing. I'm voting Yes to have this published alongside our current runs as a Best Ending run. This path shows a sufficient amount of new gameplay. A 4th run would be more repetitive, I believe.

This is definitely a strange version of Contra, though it's pretty entertaining in its own right. The names are pretty funny, like "Homicidal Censor" and "Vicious Space". Good job fighting the lag, too. I'll vote Yes.

Greenalink, I haven't watched this either yet, but I also know that there was plenty of support for a "Lab/Fight" run to accompany the currently published "Chase/Surrender" run. (I believe the discussion following adelikat's Chase/Surrender run shows that...) I look forward to seeing this when I have the time.

Thanks for the update! That looks fairly good up until the last death... that seems a bit off. However, as you mention, it's tough to tell at this point. When doing level 4, if you make a version that doesn't grab the extra life, do you think it would be possible to easily hexedit it to get a version where you do grab the life? If so, that should help with testing. Oh, and off-topic, nice job with the NESBot!

Congrats! Out of curiosity, how many carrots did you end with? If you had fewer than 9 carrots, then I guess you could grab a few more carrots without losing time in the bonus game. (The carrots you dodged in 5-1 stand out to me, for instance, as I mentioned earlier.)

Nice job! I'd seen the previous submissions, but I didn't know they could be improved by this much. This was quite entertaining, with maybe the exception of Stage 6 with all the doors. Out of question, if Bert gets the double-shot after stage 4, why don't you use him more in Stages 4 or 5?

Patashu: Understood, but that's why I've suggested that the second category could have more things like saving all the hostages. Basically, my thought was that if you're going to do something anyway to make the run slower for stylistic reasons, you might as well go all out and be quite stylish. Let the two characters do choreographed dances during waiting periods, even if it makes a bit of lag. This should hopefully make the two runs more distinct.

As Derakon and some others have pointed out, there are good arguments for each side: death vs. no-death. I have a compromise suggestion: why not allow 2 categories of runs? (I think this idea has been brought up in the thread already.) These are the categories I was considering: CATEGORY 1: Fastest time - Uses death and continues if it saves time - Avoids lag, which may lead to fewer stunts - Completes the main objectives only CATEGORY 2: 100% - Does not use death - Has speed/entertainment tradeoffs, such as playing around at the expense of some lag - Saves all hostages, or some other similar 100% goal - Shows off more variety of weapons and Metal Slugs? This run makes a fine Category 1 run, which doesn't please everybody, but I feel it pleases a sufficiently large proportion of the site's members to warrant publication. For those who object to seeing death in the run, a Category 2 run could get made to be published alongside. (I'm not implying that x2poet needs to make such a run if he doesn't want to... I'm more putting this idea out here to encourage anyone to make such a run.) I think these two categories also make sense on a number of Arcade games, not just the Metal Slug games.

I would've been bothered by the death and continues, but when I understood that they were deliberate and saved time, I was quite impressed with how well they were done. I found this quite enjoyable, and the fact that it's shorter than Metal Slug X is even better. The fight against the "See You In Hell" guy from Stage 3 was my favorite part. Yes vote. Keep on rocking.

(http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. x2poet, thanks for making these runs! I really liked your 2-player X run, and I'm sorry the decision went the way it did. I look forward to watching this once the encode is up. Derakon, thanks for the summary of points in the argument! I have a few more points to contribute on the pro-death argument. * Finding effective ways to use death, which actually save time, is not easy. If done properly, this can be very impressive. --> For one example, see the Ganbare Goemon 2 run. That run uses continues, but they don't break the pace too much, because the skips accomplished via death are amazing. Also, see the Toy Story run for the Genesis. * Arcade games weren't structured around having multiple lives and continues, unlike home consoles. Thus, there really is no alternative to death abuse except for using coins. (However, some could argue that this difference between arcades and home consoles makes the no-death condition more interesting. I don't personally believe that.)

In the end, I decided that the route planning for getting disks was impressive enough to vote Yes. Great job, and I hope improvements go smoothly.

Welcome to TASVideos, hellagels! You've done a really nice run here. I'd say it's certainly a welcome addition to the site, and I look forward to more improvements.
