I definitely agree with the idea of giving this a star instead of TMNT.

I didn't think I'd end up liking this too much because it used the Japanese version (so I couldn't understand the humor), but this turned out quite cool. Waiting 10000 frames for the debug menu is annoying, though fast-forwarding isn't too bad (there could be a subtitle in a published encode explaining that people should fast forward, maybe...). This is technically proficient enough and still entertaining that I think it ought to be published. However, since this tent glitch seems to prominently work in the J version alone, I would suggest treating this like the two runs of Mother 1 and publishing this separately alongside pirohiko's U version run.

This game certainly isn't as exploitable as future versions of Bionic Commando, as people have pointed out, but in some sense the restricted abilities of the player actually make for tense moments in the gameplay. I was amused by this movie, and it was an appropriate length. This deserves a Yes.

Very nice! I'm glad to see that you guys had time to use the props (like dogs, beer cans, aliens) to attack enemies, and you also got to put in the idle animations sometimes. That's good entertainment. The synchronized boss beatdowns are also very satisfying, given that when I played this as a kid, I may have only made it past Stage 1 once. Absolutely yes vote. What comes next in the area of immensely-popular Arcade games? Gauntlet Dark Legacy? Killer Instinct? I'm guessing that shooting games, like House of the Dead, are too trivial to TAS and wouldn't be interesting to watch.

Thanks, partyboy1a, for making a short testrun getting all flags on 1-1, and thanks to Critical five for the encode. I think this little run makes partyboy1a's point pretty well though: going for all flags generally breaks the pace. As funny as the game is, I felt it already dragged on a bit with all stages completed in an any% fashion, and it doesn't seem like the extra gameplay from flag collecting is interesting enough to warrant 10 extra minutes of movie. So, in short, this current submission rules, and an all-flags run would not be as entertaining.

Nice. This run, although not being a ton faster, does feel a lot better. The stuck pause sound in Stage 1 is actually funny. I still think the entertainment is hurt a lot by not having subweapons, but now I think this merits a weak Yes vote. Two random curiosities: 1) Christopher actually moves fairly quickly when there's nothing else on the screen (no candles). 2) Why is the sequel so much less laggy?

I think I raised the question first of whether a double cross-system obsoletion should be considered. But no matter. My thinking is: the current SSF TASes demonstrated amazing combos for the time, which actually aimed to show the player's skill. This run also does that, but by and large people notice the absurd glitches instead of the skill used in the combos. Thus, this run is entertaining for different reasons from the current published runs: this one is more like MK II in the "glitched playaround" style, whereas the current published runs are more like the MK4 run which demonstrates relatively few glitches. (The Killer Instinct run falls somewhere between these two extremes, so it seems that people at TASVideos like more than just glitchfests in their fighting games.) However, it's also worth noting that every fighting game TAS that has been published lately on TASVideos has demonstrated use of multiple characters (though KI only does it in brief spurts during combos). The old SSF TASes don't do this. This, I believe, is a good enough reason for this run to obsolete the SSF runs, but it's the only reason I've seen so far that I think is strong enough to merit obsoletion. (Also, I know that many of the points in this post have been said in the forum already... I'm just attempting to organize those points somehow.)

In the meantime, has PCSX been updated since last year? If so, does this make this run work better? It would be cool if someone could figure out what the emulator glitch actually is and fix it.

Sonikkustar: Really, it's not worth getting into. It seems that tensions flared up because of misunderstandings between two people who communicated about working on a run together. That's really all it is, and the drama isn't really anyone else's business. It also seems like it's been popular to hate on this submission technically, making claims about serious improvements but not backing up those claims. I'm not sure why. Though I guess that if the game still looks slow even when a lot of work was put into getting rid of lag, that's just a sign of a bad game for running. EDIT: Thanks, p4wn3r, for the clarification. Sounds good to me.

It's possible that BBKaizo and LightBlueYoshi are actually alternate names for the same person... especially since the submission text uses a lot of first-person language. I don't know, though, so some clarification from BBKaizo would be nice. Out of curiosity, how much time do you expect would be saved if you used that A-canceling trick throughout the movie? EDIT: Never mind, I just noticed the submission text is copied straight from the YouTube description. That's also a mildly impolite thing to do. I tried to leave a YouTube comment to let LightBlueYoshi know about this, but I got an error trying to post a comment.

Neat idea for a run, scrimpeh! Although there were some small mistakes in the run, it looked pretty clean and seems to be a good indication of what an optimized run would be like. I'm sort of torn about the run category, though. On the one hand, as someone who knows how hard this game is, you tore it to shreds. (The mummy boss and the Grim Reaper were especially incredible.) On the other hand, some of the boss fights drag pretty badly without subweapons (the bat and Dracula first form, for instance). Also, all the damage shortcuts, the major bonus points from subweapons, that's all forbidden in this run. That's a shame, since those antics are what make the current Castlevania published run so incredible. The damage transfer bug to hurt bosses also is a real shocker, and you can't do that with this run. In contrast, consider the Contra pacifist run which only uses the standard weapon. That run, by avoiding killing enemies, adds palpable extra challenge, much like this run does. However, no one part is made too much longer in the pacifist run. Also, there isn't that much entertainment that is sacrificed in the pacifist run (since the spread gun optmization, although technically impressive, doesn't have as much "wow" factor IMHO as comboing enemies with the cross subweapon in this game). All this considered, I probably couldn't give a strong "Yes" vote to an optimized run of this. I'm just one person though. Thanks for sharing your WIP though!

If this is more action-packed than the regular mode run, and it is only marginally longer, should it obsolete the regular run? Granted, this run doesn't play from a "clean" movie file, but I'm not sure that it's worth having two movies with such quite similar content and quite similar times. For example, the Aladdin "red gems" run obsoleted the normal "any%" Aladdin run (though that decision was definitely not very clear-cut).

Thank you, Flygon, for the YouTube module! This run was all kinds of awesome. I thought the bonus stages were going to be boring, but they ended up being some of the best parts of the run. I also like the little touches like how by changing the character who takes the final blow, you'd also affect how many points you got for perfect Vitality. Amazing playaround, and definitely a Yes vote. The next question is: does this form a separate SF II category or does it obsolete something? Obviously Rainbow edition can do things the normal games can't...

My snes9x doesn't have the same names for the settings, it seems, as what is listed in the submission text, but I eventually got this to sync by setting my Mix Interval to 60ms and my Buffer Length to 80ms. It was quite an entertaining run with tons of Looney Tunes goodness. The trick in 4-3 is especially an eye-opener. Yes vote.

I just discovered this thread, and that World 1 WIP is just glorious. The walljump almost cheapens the puzzles too much, but it's still entertaining. Good luck with this run, MoltovM! Out of curiosity, though, at the end of the DK fight in 1-8, the last barrel bounces off your feet to the left. Could it be bounced to the right for a faster pickup? It looks like you have time to get to the left of the platform in handstand mode.

klmz, are you sure you would need to revisit levels to get all the map pieces? If I recall correctly, there is a route which gets you all necessary upgrades without any revisits: 1. Bermuda - get the stronger golf swing 2. Niagara - get the stronger pogo 3. Mu - get the stronger pull 4. Egypt 5. Scotland I believe that 1 and 2 can be interchanged, as can 4 and 5, but you need the upgrades from 1 and 2 to get the upgrade in Mu. I also think all upgrades are necessary to get the map pieces (unless some sort of zipping is possible to get the map piece in underground Mu). I could be wrong though... I'm mostly going from memory here. Also, you'd probably want to play Egypt last since its map piece is fairly close to the start and not at all on the way to the boss (since the secret level starts as soon as you get the last map piece and kicks you out of your current level). If you were interested in doing an all-map-pieces run, I think it would be different enough to be interesting to watch. I'd certainly be happy to critique WIPs with my limited skill set.

I never played this game before, but I did play a lot of Belmont's Revenge, which I think is its sequel (the character sprite is about the same, and that game also has no stairs). Wow, this game is worse than Belmont's Revenge in just about every way! Seriously, whip downgrades for each instance of taking damage? Almost a quarter of this movie is lag, and that's WITH lag reduction efforts? Boring-as-hell second boss? Autoscroller in stage 3? There are a few advantages this game has, though: 1) It's shorter. 2) You don't have delays when grabbing powerup crystals. 3) It looks like you have easier enemy patterns than in Belmont's Revenge. 4) You can inflict more damage on bosses. I'd be curious to see what claimed large improvements are possible with this run, but overall this is a pretty bad Castlevania game to watch. The lack of subweapons really hurts entertainment. I think the quality of this run is good enough for a Meh vote (some of the boss fights are really fast, for instance), but not an absolute Yes.

PSI Slime: I haven't played this game before, but I found this run particularly interesting. One reason is the crystal ball: by seeing all the dots, you get a very good picture of how much manipulation is going on to avoid random encounters. Plus, the boss fights are so tightly managed. Although I used fast-forward with some things like the S-Brain grinding, this was entertaining to watch the whole time. Great run, great submission text, yes vote.

It sounds like the oxygen may work on a frame rule. Would it make any difference to use the oxygen BEFORE entering the water? I don't know if "useless" button presses would make any difference here. Anyway, I'll watch this soon and edit comments in here. EDIT: Looks pretty good! Maybe the water bouncing can be improved, but I'm not sure. Also, it's great that you had four health points to spare so you could take damage from the bouncy springs.

As for rerecord counts, (unknown) would work fine, but if you think it was really about 29000, then I think that's a better number. If you have the full movie consisting of both playthroughs, then you should be able to get the accurate rerecord count for this movie by taking that double-length movie and subtracting the count from the first movie. (I don't know if that's what you already tried... the description in the comments wasn't quite clear.) As for the actual run though, it's great. Having more enemies hardly slows you down but makes the dodging and bouncing even better. I would in fact recommend this to obsolete the current normal-mode run, since it outperforms in both entertainment and total score. Nice job! EDIT: Why is this labeled as "judging underway" when no judge has displayed a claim on this? It also seems quite quick to claim a submission like this within its first day in the queue.

Out of curiosity, would it be better to make this movie start from a snapshot (i.e. SRAM, I think) instead of requiring a savestate? I'd prefer one standalone movie file that can be played in the emulator, rather than requiring both a movie file and a separate savestate file. If this isn't possible, that's fine; I don't know particularly much about this kind of stuff at this point.

Hey, sorry about not getting to this sooner. This WIP looks particularly good! World 3 is really where the game starts looking particularly difficult, and the health management is great, especially in 3-2 and 3-4. I almost forgot that you can't actually use the hammer when damaged... you really make it look like this is never a problem! However, I have a couple concerns. With the seesaw in 3-3, it seems like a seesaw bounce can still reach the moving platform earlier, so why do you wait as long as you do before hitting the seesaw? And is it possible to avoid the very first carrot in 3-4, since you didn't take that upper path? Also, the start of the block breaking in 3-4 would make a good screenshot, with the sliding frog that you just hit with the hammer.

Thanks. I guess we both make mistakes with usernames, don't we? :-) I'm not offended though.

Nice job again! You also win for calling the submission file "half-minute hero" and for your credits in the comments.

Thanks for posting a well-explained argument, spweasel, against this movie. Too often than not, it's difficult to post thoughts against a technically-competent movie without getting flamed for them. You also hit on pretty much every important factor about this run: the annoying rupee sound, the floor glitch that has been previously used, and the extra gameplay. I'm of a different opinion, however, concerning how entertaining these factors are. While the repetitive rupee-draining sound is annoying, it also serves as an amusing testament to how broken this run is. It probably took me at least 15 seconds on the first watch to get over the "holy crap, what did he DO to the poor rupee counter?" feeling of astonishment. In the end, the movie is also short enough that for the most part, I'm still astonished rather than annoyed. Next, there's the argument that there's not much extra gameplay. I guess not, but most of the extra parts are fairly surprising. Even though I knew about the under-the-floor glitch, I found it quite funny to see Link leave and reenter Ganon's Tower and then proceed to jump into the wall. The final boss fight looks like a hack, but I mean that in the best way possible (total owning of the game). It's interesting to know that, as GreenaLink mentioned, that strategy isn't supposed to work with an uncursed Link. Based on this, I vote Yes. I guess I just found the main glitches amusing where others may find them mind-numbing, and that's just a matter of personal taste.

Onyx3173: Based on the text from klmz's last submission of this game, this is what I gather about the name thing. There are two cursors: the cursor that lets you select a letter to enter, and the cursor on the name itself that says where the next letter goes. The name cursor can be moved with the L and R buttons. Thus, by using L and R, time can be saved because the two occurrences of "M" can be entered without having to scroll the letter cursor. (This also explains why extra letters are entered, so that the name is long enough for the name cursor to have room to scroll.) Major props to zggzdydp for figuring out how to save time with this.
