It's not quite as entertaining to me as the previous run, but it's still ridiculous and darned impressive. Nice going! I also second the idea of having "ASH x64" in the screenshot.

What nifboy said. The fact that this is more entertaining than any of the other Battle Chess submissions just goes to show how bad chess is for speedrunning.

Warp: I see where you're coming from. However, I don't think that this would produce any more entertaining chess runs. Honestly, in real life, chess is fairly boring to watch other people play unless you're actually mentally playing along with them, i.e. thinking about what you would do if you were in the game. In other words, the skill of the players involved is what's interesting. On the other hand, a TAS is not about the player's skill, per se; instead it's more about manipulation and optimization, neither of which is the focus of a normal chess game. Not only that, but a chess speedrun wouldn't really have replay value, because once you know the move sequence, there's no real entertainment from watching the moves. In contrast, I can watch the Super Mario Bros 3 TAS multiple times because even though I know the 1-up bouncing is coming up, it's still entertaining to watch it in progress. I don't have to be surprised with SMB to be entertained, but I do have to be surprised in chess to be entertained. That being said, I'm not ruling out completely the possibility of having an entertaining chess TAS. However, it would be very hard to do, and I don't think going for pure speed would produce something watchable.

This is impressive scripting. It was nice to see a mate which wasn't one of the beginner traps, like the Scholar's Mate. However, everything about the game is slow, even for a chess game. I was amused by how the blue pawn captures the red knight, but that was really about it. I haven't decided on a vote yet, but it's going to be either No or Meh. EDIT: I voted No because of adelikat's improvement. This movie has a nice idea, trying to get the computer to throw out its opening plans, but adelikat showed you can fool the computer anyway even with a semi-standard opening.

This starts looking sort of like the published run. All of a sudden, though, the game transitions where Alucard moves in one of three ways: bat, dive kick, or pooping lasers. It was pretty awesome to see for the first few minutes, but as someone who's not really that familiar with SotN, it got repetitive. I would love to eventually see some explanations (when arukAdo has time, of course), because this really made no sense. I'm not sure what to vote. I guess a relevant question is: how does this run compare to the 100% CotM run? The variety of glitches in this movie is bigger, but the movie is also a lot longer, for instance.

Wow! That's a really nice first submission, and the scrolling glitch is pretty incredible. Also, that was really funny how you skipped the Janken fight. This absolutely earns a Yes vote.

Great job with your finished WIP! This looks quite good, and if you're going to improve it, that's even better! By now, you've heard Brushy's suggestions, and I've mentioned some stuff to try that may or may not work. One random thought: you wait a while for the automatic platforms in Stage 1 near the scissors and the oxygen tank. Have you figured out what controls their position? I was wondering if it's possible to catch the platforms sooner. (For instance, if a counter describing their position starts the first time you scroll to their screen, maybe it would actually save time to scroll them on screen before using your bomb underwater, but this is probably not going to work.) Maybe this could also work on the platform area after the ID card in Stage 2. Route thoughts: * Instead of taking all the damage in Stage 5, you'll probably save more time taking damage in Stage 3 with the rotating screws, especially the ones where it seems you currently wait for more than one full cycle before getting under them. * You get 1up bonuses in Stage 6. Could you use these to take more damage and save more time? I know that the death costs time, but you might save even more time just from having some hits to spare. Yay for using glitches to make the prize world so much less boring! If only there were a way to get in the walls without the ride, which would save you time in a couple screens. (There's no damage boosting in this game, for instance. Do any of your items sufficiently change Scooter's hitbox to make wall-entering more feasible?) Anyway, I'm looking forward to what comes next!

Wow, I was totally not expecting this run. This was pretty awesome. I like mmbossman's style a little bit more, but this run was still entertaining, and it's surprising how much faster it is. I'm not crazy about shooting an innocent person, but in the name of time I guess it makes sense. Yes vote. Out of question, though, for almost all the bosses, you're in just about the right place to shoot them right away, EXCEPT for the first one. Why is that?

This isn't the first time a movie was improved by a single frame. Good job nonetheless, and I like the peaceful input animation at the end. I especially like how in Input Display on my version, the buttons which appear furthest to the right are the highest tones. (I also miss the opening animation, since now only blank input remains there, but I understand if you thought it was getting old.)[/url]

Wow! I have a few questions though: * Is it possible to hex in a 1-frame improvement in 1-1 without too much trouble? * When you stomp the boomerang brother in the first stage of World 8, you look like you're drifting down slowly to land on him because of the P-speed. Is it faster to let go of the B-button for a few frames when running to him to avoid getting P-speed? That way, you're in the air for less time. (It might not matter though, if the boomerang still has to leave the screen before the chest appears...) * Are you going to apply these new improvements to the warpless run again? In any case, fantastic work once again!

I figured out the desync: I didn't read the earlier posts enough and used FCEUX 2.1.3 earlier. Your WIP syncs with 2.0.3. I'm going to go through this run and nitpick. A bunch of my comments can probably be answered by "The game's detection just sucks", but even then, I figured I'd try and catch whatever I can. STAGE 1 * It's too bad kicking is a little slower... it's really impressive to see radium-plated goodness on the way to the first bomb use. * Your underwater movement seems a little off after coming out of the sub. You come up far to the right for the platforms up to the bomb, and then when you leave the bomb's area, you swing far to the right before jumping out of the water. This may be necessary though. * You take three hits on the springs in the area with the red ball. Couldn't you only take two and still get the red ball to start following you at the same time? If you do this, you can take another point of damage on the mosquitoes at the very end of the level rather than kicking them. Never mind, you need the boots at the start of Stage 2 and you want to be able to deathwarp from the goggles. Still, it might be worth considering to see if you can take another hit somewhere else... STAGE 2 * Nice door and elevator glitches! * Do the UFO's in the tank-driving area cause lag? You let one or two pass you up to drop bombs. * You seem like you get out of the donut-bouncy thing a little late and slow down at the end. (I always was amused by calling it the condom ride, personally.) STAGE 3 * I'm pretty confused by the beginning of this stage. You have a Juice meter up, which should mean you can fire the ray gun, but then you switch items to the card and then to the boots?! In fact, I don't see a single instance this stage where you use the ray gun. * You have to wait a while for the screw things to move up before you walk under them. Is there enough health in the budget for you to take damage here to save time? It might even be the case that you save more time taking damage here than you do dying after the goggles in Stage 2. * What happens if you try to jump through the ship before putting down the machine parts? Does it instakill you? It's been too long since I played the game to remember. * You seem to slow down a bit more right after getting the key in the bottom-left corner. STAGE 4 * More weirdness with the gun meter, especially when you use the potion. * How can you walk through most of the worms but yet you have to kick the one on the way to the springboard? * After the springboard, you somehow flew through a bee unharmed. Nice! STAGE 5 * Your first damage on the crawler looks really odd, especially since you seem like you wait longer to dodge the monitor's bullet when getting the key shortly afterward. Maybe take damage from the bullet instead? * In the next hallway with the shooting monitors, it also looks like you could take one less hit and instead take a hit from a bouncing spring later. So far so good, though! This WIP looks pretty impressive!

Thank you for the detailed verdict! As for the title, "Swordless", while slightly inaccurate, is still the historical name for this kind of challenge. It's still appropriate, and it's no more misleading than "100% kills" in the Gradius movie. If you really want to call it low%, I guess you can, because I do believe every item type picked up is absolutely required (with the exception of the wand replacing the sword at the Gleeock fights). I am also in favor of how the sword was obtained in this run and why. I like to think of Link as being an absent-minded hero, leaving to fight the 8 dungeon bosses but forgetting his sword at home. Even when he does finally get the sword, it's as if he forgets he has it until he is faced with the big blue monstrosity that is Ganon.

Glad to see you at this topic, micro500! I tried watching your WIP, but it also desynced for me. Scooter died at the bouncing springs in the first level and then kept walking into a wall. I don't have TASing experience, but I'm happy to review runs and suggest possible shortcuts / route changes, or just be general encouragement! I'd love to see a good run of this seriously underrated game. Out of curiosity, though, you mention the infinite bomb glitch. Will that actually save time? It doesn't seem like there are any areas where it will really help to have a long-lasting bomb. What would help is if you could have more than one bomb in your inventory, though.

Thanks for the replies, MUGG! You got a Yes vote. As for the SMS version of the Smurfs, if the level design is the same, I don't really see a reason to TAS it as well as have a Gameboy TAS. The Gameboy version actually looks pretty good. If you want an idea of something to TAS, especially for medium-length platformers, the current Gargoyle's Quest run is pretty old. The game seems laggy, but it could be a good challenge in terms of optimizing jumps based on the limited flight meter. (Someday, when I have more free time, I want to try TASing its sequel.)

Nitrogenesis, what parts? The game doesn't give you much room to pass enemies quickly. The enemies I killed needed to be killed because they take away so much health.
Andrewg, one part that looks a little suspicious is the room in the Air Ducts where you zip upwards. After that zip, you walk to the door, and afterwards you change to the spring shoes and the towel. Given that you said spring shoes save a frame when you bounce, shouldn't you have changed to the spring shoes and towel shortly after the zip and bounced all the way to the door? Also, why do you equip the embalming fluid for the Crawl Space area when you need to switch back to the towel later anyway?

Nice job, especially with the autoscrollers. (With the flying bird one, it was funny to see how far away you could be from enemies and still kill them.) Level 8 inside the volcano looked less clean than Level 6, but I figure the game forces you to jump too high on a lot of these. Also, Level 12 looks ugly going up the stairs for the same reason (furthermore, I don't know why you jumped in the pot).

Congrats on finally finishing this, computerbird! It looks great. It's a shame the chain rod glitch only works on the (J) version (since I actually like following the plots of MMZ games), but nevertheless this was a fast-paced run.

I actually sort of like this game. Yes, it's horribly coded and looks cheap, but there's some reasonable variety for how short the game is. The boss fights look great this time, and that makes a big difference. I think the boss fights push me over to a Yes vote. Back in the day, I also maybe would've been in favor of a Cheetahmen II publication, but there are two things that this game has that II doesn't. II only has the horizontal scrollers, for one. Second, the ending of the II runs we've seen don't feel satisfying given that the game basically just freezes.

This game isn't as entertaining as the first Golden Axe, unfortunately. The panther swing is definitely repetitive and gets old. It's funny, because I quite like the Streets of Rage movie we have that uses the team attacks all the time, but I can't get into this run as much. I'm going with Meh. However, I thought it was funny to see the Panther run back in the end for the axe. He must have realized he needed a cool weapon to look tough for the credits.

Not bad. The game is pretty trippy. It seemed like a fairly straightforward run, but there was enough stage variety to keep it interesting. I'm also curious to know the answer to Priam's questions.

Stylistically, I like the occasional upward stabs. They make Gomez look even more badass about how he runs through the stages with no worries. This little bit of the game makes it look like a full run (doing all the "stages") would be cool, but I imagine it would get pretty repetitive.

Nice improvement! Is anyone planning on improving the Knuckles run with findings like these?

This game seemed pretty silly to me, but it was speedy. I approve.

I like both runs. However, I like the (U) run more. First of all, to agree with what Personman's first paragraph said, it feels like the (U) version was the main version and (E) was a suboptimal derivative of it. The clearest indication of this is when 1-2 and 4-2 start, the music is finished long before Mario enters the pipe. The (E) version, for reasons like those, feels "unnaturally fast". Secondly, once you can do the "faster flagpole glitch" (the one that doesn't make Mario walk to the castle) at every opportunity, it cheapens the effect of the glitch. Consider, for example, if the warpless run were done in PAL. A run aiming for fastest time in PAL can probably perform this faster glitch at every level without doing anything too special. In contrast, the current NTSC warpless run needs to take the time to do setup with shells and bullet bills (or even with a cheep cheep in the minus-world run) to make this glitch work. These are also the most interesting and surprising parts of that run. If the PAL run doesn't require the player to be clever to get the best time at the flagpole, then an optimal run in PAL will not take time to do impressive stunts. This, I believe, makes a strong enough argument for why (E) should not obsolete (U). However, when it comes to publishing this alongside (U) or rejecting, I don't think the argument is as clearcut. I lean slightly against separate publication, because I don't feel like the (E) ROM's benefits make for a better-looking run (see my first paragraph). However, I am definitely in favor of linking to this from the (U) run, since players familiar with playing PAL versions of games should especially find this run interesting. All in all, then, I guess my vote is "No". However, I'm quite impressed with this run nonetheless.

I saw the YouTube video. Good job once again! However, is it possible to do zipping in the lower sections of the Crawl Space? It seems strange that you only hang out on the top areas.
