I like the killing off of your allies to save time in early battles. However, I don't get why waiting a long time to hand Cricket Pie to Frogfucious saves time, it seems that sequence is mandatory anyway.
I don't know about that either, but I presume that handling the Cricket Pie this way is slightly more on the way. A rough analysis of the submission text suggests that early on, at least 1878 frames were saved related to the Cricket Pie: 993 (Mushroom Kingdom 2nd time) + 885 (Tadpole Pond 1st time) + (some time from not getting Froggie Stick in Forest Maze section) However, 1835 frames were lost later on: 930 (Mushroom Kingdom 3rd time) + 905 (Tadpole Pond 2nd time) This still amounts to at least 43 frames saved, though the savings could have also been from other factors. In any case, it doesn't seem like Mallow needs the Froggie stick early on, and in fact he's dead in a number of the fights and/or only is used to power up everyone else first turn. Also, the total number of trips to Tadpole Pond or Mushroom Kingdom hasn't changed, since you need to talk to Frogfucius before Star Hill anyway.

Nice little changes! It must be tricky to try new level-up strategies, since you gain time in some places and lose time in others. It also felt like this run used more standard, lower-damage attacks to save time at the end of battles, which also made the battles more interesting. Yes vote.

I don't think this should obsolete the Knuckles run. If the only point of the Knuckles run were to show an all-emeralds completion, then I would agree, but that run is also trying to show off Knuckles. His style is different enough, I think, to not be obsoleted. As for the category of this run, how about calling it the "Hyper Sonic" run? The use of Hyper Sonic really dominates the end parts of the run and sets the tone. It would be sort of like how we have runs for Richter and Maria in Rondo of Blood, or the different characters for Dracula's Curse, where the runs differ enough in style to warrant separate publication.

I guess it's surprising that the old run got improved by so little strategically; tons of credit goes to Bag Of Magic Food for that. The game is a little more entertaining than most Lolo games, I think, since the layout is more varied and there's MORE THAN ONE background song. It's a shame the egg glitch didn't seem useful more often. Also, it's good to see the blatant abuse of Don Medusa. Lastly, it was amusing to see the entire "final battle" played and won without any input. I guess this deserves a Yes vote as an improvement to the published run. I'm curious though: if Famtasia doesn't have a frame counter, then how do you know that many rooms were improved by 1 or 2 frames?

PJ Boy, do you think there's a chance that you'd want to team up with someone like cpadolf to finish a 9% run? That kind of run would be amazing, even on Normal mode. As for this run, it's tough for me to spot specific improvements, but it's still a great run. The bossfighting is particularly amazing (everyone's been mentioning the insect-thing Imago, and I also agree that's a highlight of the run), and it was also amusing to see you randomly waste missiles through the last part of the run to run out of missiles with shots at the metal thing's eye. Yes vote. By the way, do you have any short comparisons you can put up about specifically where you saved the most time?

After watching this movie for a bit, I was reminded of Super Spy Hunter (since it is also essentially a fixed-time autoscroller when played as a TAS). I rewatched some of Super Spy Hunter, and I was much more entertained than when watching this movie. The issues have basically been brought up by other people, especially the music, which is good but too repetitive for a game of this length. The game has quite little variety, even if it is challenging, which causes the glitches to get old. The lack of boss fights doesn't help either, and the minigames make a poor replacement. (The only particularly interesting minigame was the guitar one.) I respect the work you put into this, GlitchMan, but the game doesn't seem to be cut out for a good TAS. I see that you put effort into playing around, but it seems that the game is 4 times longer than it should be.

This was a spectacular watch. The sliding and damage boosting were pretty awesome, and they seemed like they'd be really hard to control outside of a TAS. It was tough to see sometimes which animal helpers you had at which points, but that didn't end up mattering too much. You definitely took a big game and made it pretty short. Yes vote. Also, I laughed when I saw Sonic on the beach. I realized shortly afterward how much of the music sounded like it could be from a Sonic game.

Thanks, Baxter, for linking the AVGN review. I gotta say, I have a lot more appreciation for how annoying this game must be to run after that video. Basically, although the game has graphics out of the Atari dumpster, and it keeps looping the same theme (actually, a lot of the game makes me think of Takeshi No Chousenjou), you beat the game before there's really a chance for it to get too boring. The boss fight is reasonably cool too. Yes vote.

By the way, if you're curious about the R powerup, I saw you revealed one in Stage 1-3 and passed it up. I tried looking for a video game map, but I couldn't find one marking where the powerups are. This run was more enjoyable the second time I saw it. The music is awesome enough for the Game Boy to keep me interested too. I'd like to see if you can get a little more hard data as to how powerful the weapons actually are, as well as testing fighting the bosses with headshots. However, this run is still worth a Yes from me.

I haven't watched this yet, but I see a lot of people saying they wish it was in English. Is there enough text that subtitles would be useful? (as in Youkai Douchuuki)
Yes, there is enough text. Text occurs less frequently than in Youkai Douchuuki, but this game has enough little quests that it would help to understand what the player is actually supposed to be doing. Sorry for only seeing this message after movie publication, though. If you still want to whip up some subtitles, I'd definitely appreciate it, though I'm in no hurry. I believe also that some other games would appreciate subtitles more desperately, like the Final Fantasy V run.

LOL. If someone were to attempt another in-game run improvement, would it still get the Plasma beam? To me, that seemed to be the biggest noticeable difference in the routes.

Wow... I have to admit, I always wondered what the Spazer beam was useful for in a TAS, so it was nice to see it skipped. I noticed the walljump in the second room of Norfair, the one that caused a lot of controversy with Saturn's run. Also, I love that you were able to make the 5-bomb spread useful, and the fight against the metal pirates before Ridley was spectacular. With the route changes and the ammo/health management, it's clear that you guys tested lots of stuff and know the game inside and out. Yes vote.

I like the layout of this game better than in the first Shadow of the Beast, and the pace and fighting were excellent. Thank you also for the helpful descriptions, maTO!

Priam, you're thinking of Magician. I think that for that run, subtitles were awesome because the game showed you so little helpful information on the main screen. Thus, without the subtitles, you wouldn't appreciate how close the character was to running out of magic or health, etc. For this game, it's true that the objectives are a little unclear. (Thanks to maTO for some explanation, but a little more explanation about the well might be good.) On the other hand, the health number is very noticeable in this game, and it's not hard to figure out what the player's options are. Magician is much more complicated in terms of spell choice. For me, what kept this game marginally interesting was its music, its graphics layers, and the sheer difficulty of the game. In the meantime, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_Beast. EDIT: Oops, I guess the game wasn't Magician. Thanks for clearing that up, Priam. I guess we just find different stuff interesting after all.

Once again, great job at finding the new trick! Also, very awesome job klmz with the improved wallpass. And I guess Phil gets plenty of credit too for making the first run that showed TASVideos that these stages existed in the first place. EDIT: If GAP is also responsible for the trick, thanks to him too! I think the author name might be messed up in the submission, by the way. It currently says "HappyLee's NES klmz's NES..." and so on. Shouldn't it instead say "HappyLee and klmz's NES..." and so on?

Wow, this game is... interesting. This seems like a strange cross between Heart of Darkness and Altered Beast. It was definitely clear where your work went into picking damage spots. I have two small questions. First, near the end of the first stage (I think), you climb up a ladder to get a potion while still at 8 health. It doesn't seem that potion gives you any more health: what does it do? Secondly, at the very end, you still beat the boss with 5 health left, so would it save any time to get fewer health powerups? This run still deserves a yes vote. It definitely shows TAS mastery of a clunky game.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I stumbled upon this movie and the published movie comments are slightly incorrect. The movie was improved by about 42 seconds, instead of 21.

Is it weird that as soon as I saw the intro of the game (I usually let a new game run a bit before starting a movie), I could tell the game was made by Enix because of the style they use to draw the blue Earth? It reminded me immediately of Illusion of Gaia :-) I enjoyed this run, though it has a really large amount of downtime in the overworld map. Also, why do bosses have to pause for about a second before you can scroll their text? The subtitles helped with the downtime, but occasionally they were in the way... I'm not sure there's much you can do about that. It dawned on me, though, that the reason that the downtime seems so long is BECAUSE you're hurtling through the stages at breakneck speed, sometimes chaining jumps off of creatures. The fights are generally awesome. It's clear that the game wasn't really designed to be played as minimalist as you did, skipping so many enemies. Also, I found it darkly funny how you beat up Papa and Mama Yeti and then Junior goes by crying, and then even later you beat Junior up too! Anyway, Yes vote. I would be interested in seeing other evolutionary paths too, but I'm not sure if any other paths are worth making a run category for.

I finally got around to watching this. It's a pretty entertaining RPG run, since most of the plot seems intact. (I couldn't figure out what the point of the colored crystal was during dialogue though... does that reflect whether you're good or evil?) The route looks pretty solid and the fights are well-manipulated, though the battles in the run become monotonous really quickly. Also, it doesn't really seem like any character other than the main guy gets any real use except for using powerups on the main guy or occasionally doing some extra damage. Eventually I fast forwarded through a lot of the battles. I don't really get how HP is decided in that game (Example: the giant cockroach in the frog palace seems to take more damage than some of the boss fights shortly thereafter!). All things considered, this is a solid enough run to get a Yes vote. Good job with your first TAS!

I sort of agree with Noob Irdoh here, though I do think the "Move on and get publish this" statement was a bit too aggressive. The issue for me is a question of tone. Saying "I think this run is bad because the SMS version is so much better" is not really fair to the author or respectful of the author's work. I think a better statement to make would be "Ok, this version is fine, though if a run on the SMS version gets finished in the future, I think that should obsolete this." This latter statement is much more constructive while getting the same point across. I guess the question that OmegaWatcher raises is: Is a GG run of this game going to be satisfactory? I believe the answer is yes. I've enjoyed watching this run, and until I see a better run (possibly on SMS instead of GG), I will be happy with this run on the workbench. Some points have been raised about the supposed inferiority of the GG version; as of now, none of those actually ruin the experience for me, though that is just a matter of opinion. The other important question is: How improvable is this run? Alden and mike89 suggest some alternate tactics, and it's up to the judges to decide how much this run should be improved. However, the question of how improvable this run is should be a separate question from which system the game should be run on. Also, I believe this is the main question which should determine the judging of the run.

Wow, the character sprites for this game seem more like Pitfall Harry than Batman. The music is not bad, though the game is almost too simple to make a good run. I just feel like it's a Meh kind of game. If you were looking for suggestions anyway, this submission reminded me of one. How about you try the sequel, Batman: Return of the Joker, but for Game Boy? There's quite a few differences with the NES version: stage select (though you'll probably just want the standard order), a grappling hook, limited batarang ammo obtained from powerups, and such. I think the game also had a tendency to lag, making for a more nontrivial run. I remember it being a tough game when I was a kid. EDIT: There's an old GB/GBC wishlist thread as well with some good stuff. Nobody's posted to that since 2007, but some of the games listed in it are quite good.

Thank you, Mr. Omicron, for providing the name of your hack in the submission filename. It turns out it is NOT Athetic 3. The name of the game is "Peachy Mario by Mana". You should rename the submission. The ROM filename is "Peachy Mario by Mana (SMB1 Hack)"... I can give the CRC if that's considered legal or people want it. As for the run itself, the hack is pretty short, which means the run doesn't have a lot of chances to show off. It seems like the coin room and the parts with the falling platforms can be done faster, though that's only a crude observation. I just don't feel like this hack is particularly good, as it doesn't give you interesting puzzles. Sorry, but No vote.

Hyper Sonic totally makes it worth it for this game to have a third category of run. Nice job!

Umm... thank you for the patched ROM link, but I'm not sure that's actually allowed for the site. Maybe it's ok because this is a hack? In fact, the movie file doesn't seem to sync with the ROM at all...

This was pretty awesome! Although the game is long, the stage variety keeps it really interesting. I had to turbo through the mini games, but that's probably to be expected. It's been a while since I've dealt with any games in the Wario series... if you don't have a health bar, then how are you punished for taking damage? I see that you lose coins during the normal stages for getting hit, but does anything different happen if you get hit during a boss battle? Also, you ended the Chapter 3 boss fight with a quick last hit. Would it have been possible to use that strategy to pull off more than one quick hit, especially in the second-to-last phase with two little bees released? Once again, good job! I'd be curious to see how much time the new techniques save on a redo, but for now this is definitely worth keeping, rather than canceling and redoing right now.
