Edit: Better idea "Simulates play by # players" where # is the number of controllers used for normal gameplay (as opposed to reset sequence or cheat-code) purposes.
That sounds like a very workable solution for me, with the possible modification of "Simulates simulatenous play by # players", to differentiate games like Track & Field from other, true 2 player movies.

Except when I TAS, I just use 1 keyboard, even for two characters. I find the controller idea somewhat... umm... contrived, I guess. I like having "simultaneously" in the title, as neither Maniac Mansion nor Humans controls more than 1 character simultaneously.

No, Saturn, I do not understand your situation. You hinder current progress of others for the possibility of attainig "fame" (within this very small community) for yourself. Instead, because of your actions, you have tainted the communities perception of you. Instead of seeing you as a great SM TASer with undeniable skills, you are now seen as someone who will not help out unless you can somehow crow about how great you are. Whether you realize this or not is unclear to me, but if it is, and you continue to post just to show how great you are, I can imagine a time when nobody will even read anything your right anymore. Because it will be exactly the same crap as the 100 posts before it. Also, somewhat of a simulpost with Bisqwit.

The only problem with mini games both TAS and speedrunning wise is that you usually get a bunch of people who got the exact same score meaning often perfection is quite easily reached in a short space of time.
Which is why it's a fun forum topic, and not candidates for submission:)

Way to help out the community Saturn. Four different SM runs have been published since November 26, 2006, and all you've done is sat on this information to act superior. Very classy.

I just use the Goodsets as they come, hacks, crap, and all. Since they're 7z'ed, they take up next to no space, and it's helpful to not have to go search for a patch file and IPS every time I want to watch a movie of a hack. So I basically don't use anything, but if you were to write one, I'd definitely give it a try.

Nope, can't hurt at all. I guess to clarify my position on the subject: If the changing of the names saves some time at the beginning of the run, but no where else, it's ridiculous to say that it should obsolete a currently published movie. However, if changing the names of characters will cause a movie to be noticably faster, like on the scale of minutes or tens of minutes, I'd have a hard time not voting yes. However, if the changing of the names were the only thing a new submission added, I think the author would get an incredible amount of shit for not doing anything new or improved. I would consider frame shaving not related to character names an improvement, in case anyone was wondering.

I get the feeling this thread is not so much hypothetical as it is "I started a game and gave the characters really long names, but because of the text rules in the game, it will make the run x minutes longer. But I really don't want to start over. Please vindicate my decision with this hypothetical poll." True or no, I don't think a run should be obsoleted by a submission who's only improvement is faster names, but I also think that if the names have as much impact as callmewoof indicates, they should be shortened when a run is began. So that way you don't have to worry about it being obsoleted by a movie that finds 1 or 2 new tricks AND makes the names shorter.

I really want to commend you, Cpadolf, for running this game so soon after a publication. I knew there was an absolute buttload of lag present, but without actually trying myself, all I saw was an improvement to two movies that were three years old. If I'd known how poorly it was done, I would have voted no. But no matter now, I'm actually looking forward to a fully capable TASer working his magic on this:) I can try to find RAM addresses for bosses if it would help you out, just let me know.

Self Quote FTW. Also, this site is not about rewarding hard work, or publishing something just because someone put a lot of work into it. It's about making entertaining movies with clear goals. While you may have A, you do not have B. So until you work out some of the problems you have with unclear goals and precision difficulties, I don't see this being publish-worthy. Also, on a personal note, even if you cleared up the above problems, I'd probably end up voting "meh". The game is kinda long and somewhat repetitive for my tastes, although I can see how someone may enjoy it.

Or...... use this As for the actual movie, I think it's a somewhat interesting game, but Aqfaq makes some very good points. First of all, you're 3 frames slower than his published movie, just getting to the first frame of action (377 vs 374). Also, I'm not a big fan of fuzzy goals, unless the movie is very entertaining, and specifically aims for entertainment, as opposed to completing the objectives as fast as possible. Fuzzy goals are frowned upon because it makes judging harder, and discourages future obsoletion attempts. If a future submission decides to go for the treasures that you didn't collect, should the two runs be comparable, even though they collect different things? I'm sorry, but in your objectives you aim for 100% treasures, but fail to do that, so I have to vote no. If you manage to find a glitch that allows you to collect the ones you needed to skip over, and get the "super secret" treasure Aqfaq mentioned, I'll certainly reconsider. But as it stands right now, you didn't complete your stated objectives, and "showing all the game" is a poor goal for any game.

alden: Yes! That's the old one I was thinking of, thanks! I may go try to find that and an old Mac 7.6 emulator now:) And my families first computer had the grouch trash can on it. My dad had to disable it for a while, because my sister was like 3 at the time, and would just drag any file she could find into the trash to hear Oscar sing to her.

Stickyman: I seem to remember a game very much like the one you described. I played it on my grandparents old Mac (estimating it had a processor somewhere around 40 MHz). But I couldn't tell you the name of it for the life of me :/ EDIT: Also, happy 1000 posts to me!

Check this out. Seems the voting was good, at least. EDIT: Also, here's the discussion thread for the game, maybe a mod will merge these two. Thanks to Inzult for catching the other one:)

Not Metroid for one. Super Metroid, yes, but not the original.

It's not so much knowing how to master 3D TASing as much as TASing lags behind the emulation community. If there were proper emulators for gamecube, PS2, etc, it wouldn't be long before someone implemented rerecording and playback, making a TAS very possible. Although I should probably also make the point that decent PSX emulation has been around for a while without approved TASing tools, so we may just be stuck with N64 for a while as our highest generation of runs.

Here's a handy link of all the arguments for and against fast publication. Ya know, just so we don't pollute another thread with the same fucking bullshit that's been talked to death already.

1) andrewg "finds" glitch at 7pm Eastern time (showed youtubes on IRC) 2) klmz submits at 3:30 am Eastern time 3) Movie is published at 5:40 am Eastern time There's the timeline as I know it. That's less than 12 hours from discovery of new technique to publication, which is probably a new world record:)

General impression: a very, very good first run! The game is colorful and fairly fast paced, with some very nice animations. I liked the multitude of shortcuts you managed to achieve using enemies for height, and the zipping in walls was unexpected. The only complaint I have is the length of the clown fight. It felt like it took up half the movie. But other than that, I enjoyed this a lot after the first couple levels, and it looks very well done for your first attempt.

After reading through your previous posts, I've come to the conclusion that much of what you write could be comprehended more clearly on the first read through with this: As for encoding things, Mupen can be somewhat finicky (or to put it less politely, a pain in the ass). Whether that is the reason for the delay, or whether the judges have simply not gotten around to it, I cannot say.
