I'm impressed. Amazing how much time you can save when you're only dealing with one character instead of four...and some nice optimizations also. I don't really understand how the whole "reset" of the game works in terms of the movie, though. Perhaps a bit of explaining to this old dumbass would help :) I'm curious if they'll let two runs of this game be published...one for full characters/speed/low level, and another for single character/speed. If not, well...your run HAS given me a few ideas in regards to the game...and I may have to give them a run... ....after your run is done, of course ;)

Nah, I don't mind at all...I blanked and said Nintendo (har, like they could come up with something like FF) ;) And hey...FF is seeming to be a cakewalk, compared to Dragon Warrior 4...I've had to stop my run more than a few times because of failure to manipulate luck. Spending 3-4 hours on a single fight is NOT amusing, let me tell you :)

Can add me to that list...of course, I had the benefit of working AT nintendo for a short period of time many years ago, so my collection isn't half bad. Probably the best one, though...is my still-sealed copy of Final Fantasy. I tried to keep up with buying new sealed copies of groundbreaking games when they first game out...FF2, FF7, FFX, and so forth.

Well, cleaned up Chapter 1 today...I'm sitting at the fight with Saro's Shadow + the Giant Eyeball atm...and swearing up a storm. This game is HORRIBLE when it comes to critical hits. Not only is the game frame based, but it also is based on how long you hold down a button. Explanation: Frame 63: Hit "A", advance to frame 64, let go of "A", advance to frame 71 = 19 damage Frame 63, Hit "Turbo A", keep holding to frame 71 = 18 damage Frame 63, Hit "Turbo A", keep holding to frame 70, let go for 71 = 17 damage..... ....and so forth. It seems like every frame has 8 possible damage variables. Talk about tedious...and to top that off, it doesn't register till that 8th frame...so memory watching is out. *grumble* This is gonna take a loooooooong time.

Let me see if I can touch on a few of those points: 1. Yeah, I noticed the tunnel part on playback...I'll deal with that today. 2. Day/Night only passes on the overworld. 3. I completely blanked on the shoes...I tried using the wyvern wings in loch tower...so I should have remembered this one as well...thanks for pointing it out. 4. Chapter 2...I've been thinking about that, and took a look at some of the item drops by mobs. I can't remember, but I might pick a fight with a Vampdog or a Razorwind, if I can find either, and snag the drop from them (Thorn Whip and Boomerang, respectively). I'm worried about that first required fight as well, but we'll see how it turns out. 5. I do plan on the Casino. Those shields would come in real handy, and considering I come across Mara/Nara first in chapter 5, that would be a huge bonus. Between the shields and armbands, I think that would tie me over for a while. Money...well, I'll probably try selling off something to afford that claw. 6. I wasn't sure on the woman in Burland...I figured I'd play it safe, but now that I know, I'll make sure to avoid her next time. I'll probably work on optimizing chapter 1 this afternoon.

Oops...guess I wasn't paying too much attention...was trying to make sure I avoided the enemy encounters...I'll have to go back and listen for that one. As for the criticals...what I figured out was this: The damage is based on the frame input after you see "Ragnar attacks!". As soon as that comes up in a fight, and you wait for the little down arrow...frame advance varies your damage...and this game is based on single frame advance, hence all the re-records so early on. I'll make sure that next go-around, I actually spend the time to find a critical every round if possible. I sort of gave up after not getting one for 100 frames or so a few times.

Odd, I even redownloaded it...and had the same issue. Guess I'll look elsewhere :) *edit* +dumbass here...funny how I can find 2 different DW4's...one being around 500k, and the other is 1025k. The larger one loads just fine in JNES, etc...but won't load in FCEU. I'll start chapter 1 tomorrow.

Minor hold on the attack until someone figures out why DW4 won't work with FCEU...I really would hate to switch and learn Famtasia as a result of this :(

Yeah, I seem to remember when I played, I loved a chapter 5 party of Alena, Ragnar, the Hero + one other (sometimes cristo, sometimes doran when I was leveling up). Taloon...god, I remember his chapter all too well...what was it...8 broadswords and 8 suits of half plate? But I always ended up getting the Sword of Malice at his shop, no matter how long it took. I think I'm most curious about how the random factor works. If it's frame based like FF, then this game shouldn't be much more than re-records. The encounter bit is probably the part I'm most interested in. I'm curious to see how I can doctor encounters to pick the fights I want to have. After reading one of the walkthroughs, it seems the only optional part of the game is Seaside...so I think all the characters ARE required. I think this game is going to require much more planning...at least in regards to Chapter 5. But I think the entertainment factor could be much higher, at least in regards to the requisite fights to level up, and perhaps a lucky item drop or five ;)

To be honest, I don't know...I may run the first chapter this weekend as a trial, just to get an idea. I'd say 5 hours or less, but honestly, who knows. It definitely won't be the 1:30 of final fantasy ;)

Any interest in a run on this game? I could use a new project to work on next week...and I used to have a lot of fun playing this game...hell, all the dragon warrior's were fun for me. If so, I'll take a peek at gamefaq's and work on the planning stage sometime this weekend.

Let me see if I can touch on a few points: 1. Regarding Corneria at the start...I advanced as much as I could to try and get him to move out of the way. It just came across as being quicker to force him out of the way than the latter. Perhaps I did something wrong, but I doubt it...??? 2. Swamp cave...the Iron Armor for the wizards is almost a necessity. Without it...well, they tend to do 2 hits for enough damage to kill any character outright. And even with luck manipulation, I found it nigh impossible to get them both to miss, or even to 1-hit. 3. The sea shrine...I had to modify that run to hell and beyond, because of the required fights I was coming up against. I wasn't kidding when I said Squaresoft designed the random encounter list perfectly...albeit probably on accident. Running through the shrine normally (going to get the slab, then running to kill kraken), I ended up with 5 required fights (3 sets of ghosts, 2 sets of waters). This method, I ended up with ONE required fight (stupid wizard sahag), and actually gained 150 frames over my prior run. I roamed around the exit/exited+went inside the town to avoid another required fight one step shy of getting back to the airship. Could I have done it differently? Probably...and I may in the future. 4. Little plans like that (a house instead of the inn, etc.), I'd have to check and see just how many frames I lose in the process. Somehow, I have a feeling they'll be pretty close, but all these tiny "quirks" might be what is necessary to push the run under the 1:30 mark. 5. The Earth Floor...I wasn't happy about that, but here was the problem. Based on the encounter list, if I hadn't done those two fights there, I would have had to deal with a group of 3-4 fires later on, as well as a required water fight on ToFR Water. Killing two earths with a weakness to fire was a lot easier than the pair of alternatives...trust me, I tried both ways. And to touch on Axeman's comments on why I didn't do the fights earlier...well, let me quote a little blip from my notes: ToFR 1F (Avoid 1, 2) ToFR 2F (Avoid 1, 2, 3, 4, 8) ToFR 3F (Avoid 3, 4, 5, 8) ToFR Earth (Avoid 7) ToFR Fire (Avoid 7) ToFR Water (Avoid 1, 3) Basically, the way the encounter list is setup, there's no possible way to avoid those required fights, short of advancing the list probably an extra 10-15 fights. Either I'm stuck fighting that streak of 5-7 required fights in a row (see my 2nd run post), or spacing them out and avoiding some of the uglier ones (Gas Dragons, Fires, Waters). I admit, ToFR and the Sea Shrine are probably some of the most unorthodox solutions I could have done, but this run was a combination of time and lowest level. Fighting groups of 3 ghosts, 3 fires, 3 waters, or a pair of Gas Dragons....well...I guess you can call it the lesser of two evils? I'd be happy to post my encounter list I made while I was making my 3rd run, if that would allay some of the questions you have. Other than that...I won't admit that the run is flawless, and probably never will be, but it is one hell of a start.

I kept retrying on different frames...I found that a lot easier than looking into the memory and trying to figure out the register(s) I needed to watch. A bit tedious, but not too shabby...most fights ended up being 100 frames or less, although there were a few exceptions (notably most of the boss fights).

Well, the run is done. Last command time is 1:30:48...which was pretty damn close to what I was hoping for. I'll write up a summary and submit it tomorrow...talk about a daunting weekend. Now, where's my beer :)

Alright...after doing a lot of tedious research...I think I'm ready for my last run at this game. Thanks to Rincewind's encounter listing, I was able to analyze my 2nd run (albeit somewhat incomplete), and make a sketchy map based on where an extra encounter would help avoid certain fights. Most places, one extra encounter would help matters...and some others, 3-4 are required to get my run in-sync. I'll give *edit* Squaresoft (duh...dumb moment on my part) */edit* credit...whether they designed this or not, they did a great job making a low-level speed run a pain in the ass. I'll have to be creative, but I "think" I can avoid every required random fight in the game. I may still have a few ambushes with shadows due to my low level (and the fact that an ambush may be faster than setting up the ONE non-ambush shadow encounter I've been able to find), but other than that, I think I'm ready. If everything goes as planned, I should have it done sometime this weekend...but then again, nothing ever goes as planned, right? :)

Sorry, been tied up for the last week with another project (not run-related)...my apologies. I've been doing some reading regarding the encounter list/protocol, and I'm working on some varied runs to see if moving an extra step here and there wouldn't change some of the unavoidable fights (i.e. the two sets of ghosts in the sea shrine as an example). Let's just say I've made two runs at this game...the third should be the one, and I won't be doing a 4th :)

Thanks, Paulygon...I went to gamefaqs and did some reading about how the encounter system works...I think I'm going to map out my first run and this new run, and see where the changes came into play. I probably had more unavoidable encounters this time around than imaginable...just off the top of my head, I can count of at least 10 (Shadow ambushes, Ghosts, Zombulls, Wizards, Frost Giants/Wolves, and Waters), and that was before I even hit ToFR. I'd like to cut that number down. As for the ribbon...I eliminated one from my run (in the sea shrine), but it's purely for preventative maintenance. I want my character with the bane sword to have it, just in case when I run a frame that SHOULD kill an enemy, they get an action off, say...like XXXX or Glare, that kills him instead. Considering I grab the Wizard Staff anyways, a few extra frames for that doesn't bother me much. I hate to add any steps to the run though, if for nothing else, looking tacky...I had to right before the ToFR anyways...and this is something I noticed: No matter what, if you kill Kary with bane...the next fight ALWAYS is an ambush. Go figure...I tried modifying the prior 2 fights to Kary, as well as finding another frame where bane kicked in, and it was the same result. I remember that happening on my test run, and it sure as shit happened here as well. Guess it's back to the drawing board.

Remind me to keep my mouth shut from now on. I "was" going to finish under 1:30 this go-around...until I hit ToFR....5 fights in a row went like this: Gas Dragons x2 Phantom Zombie Dragons x4 Frost Giants x2 + Frost Wolves x6 Worm 3 cheers for unfleeable battles...it'll still be a semi-impressive run, but level 10 is all but out the window now. Question is, do I submit this one, or start over and hope for some better luck avoiding those unfleeable fights.

Actually, I did give that a try with Lich this time around...I did a little comparison with having all 4 attack, vs. all 3 fighters attacking, and the red mage running. No major difference. Usually, by the time I found a frame where I wasn't killed by ICE2 and got one or two criticals in...both equaled out in terms of frame count. It's sort of like the unavoidable shadow fights I've come across. I found ONE combination where the shadows don't ambush you (has to be 5 of them, no other group works), and between either letting 3 (the min. number) ambush you and losing those 300 frames, or running the fight prior over and over for 300 frames...sometimes, I come out ahead...and sometimes, its better if I let them ambush me...it actually saves time. Weird combinations...but oh well...time is still looking awfully good. 41 minutes in, and I just hit the Ice Cave. I just hope I can avoid those unfleeable fights, or I won't be able to hit 1:30 (I've only had 2 fights so far...the pair of wizards to get the crown, and the pair inside the earth cave)

Well, scratch the whole "run" being the fastest action. That MAY be true, but the problem is this: Send 4 fight commands through, and say I find a good round on frame ****38...with one useless red mage not doing anything. Reload, send 3 fight commands and one run command through on frame 38, and the effect is much different. Guess I'm sticking to just all out attacking.

Yeah, I had that one written down as well...the attack animation on bosses is severely extended. Once I pick up the bane sword, I'll be able to find the exact frame where it kicks in, reload, and have everyone else run prior (if the bane isn't the first command sent through). Should save me a few frames here and there. Little update...the rerun actually went a bit faster this go-around...I'm almost glad I accidentally wiped my first run. Unfortunately, the NPC's in the earth cave (stupid bats) gave me a bit of a problem, as well as yet another unavoidable ambush vs. shadows (I'm beginning to think it's my lack of levels that is causing that...), but I'm still almost half a minute ahead...picked up the ruby in 25:30 this swing. I'll be working more on it today. And after I finish this run, I might give a try to 3 fighters/black mage...just to see if picking up level 3 spells any earlier helps me in the long run or not.
