Well, if you want to discuss anything regarding my run, feel free to reach me using any of the means indicated.

Well, I managed to snatch it before Cpadolf edited his post, but I'll try to avoid spoiling. So far I understood two things from this WIP: 1) it seems I have nothing to learn from NameSpoofer (yay), since pretty much everything from red Brinstar on was quite average by today's standards (far from bad, though, I'd say it's close to hero's any%v1 or JXQ's 100%v2); 2) the route he takes is similar or identical to mine, which leaves me wondering about the energy management during the next five minutes or so. This is something I've been meaning to test, since two completely different approaches are possible, and I wouldn't be able to estimate without testing it properly (something I have neither time nor motivation for atm). Still, who knows… he might grow into another Cpadolf in a year. :) And it's good he'll at least obsolete the current run, since I'm taking quite the long time to leave it hanging like that.

Well, in my experience it still boils down to personal effort over the circumstances. I've been out of practice for several years, and my English severely degenerated as a result. As soon as I started to actively communicate over the internet, my writing skill only kept improving (now to do the same with verbal, and it will be totally awesome). So poor education is never a good excuse to worsen the posts you make, unless worsening them is the whole point.

1. The notion that you make more mistakes than someone else is in no way good. Which means it will be good if you work on it. 2. You are not a native speaker, so making mistakes that don't pertain to the lack of proofreading is naturally more forgivable to you (yet, you are encouraged to improve your English). 3. "The main thing is that you can understand him" is not always true, and this is where I say: "lurk more". [EDIT] Decided to elaborate further. I would like to once again stress the fact that TASvideos is an international community, with numerous active members from countries like Japan, China, Finland, Brazil, France, Germany (as in your case), Russia (as in mine), and so on. Many of them don't have a good enough grasp of English to post often, but the fluent speakers' responsibility is to make themselves clear so that these people would be able to understand them and contribute. Personally, I have studied English (largely thanks to this forum, as well) to the extent of being able to decipher most mistakes and misspellings, even if some of them take some time to. But I can't guarantee that someone who is worse than me at English would be able to understand some of the examples I listed above. And if you care enough to be more active, you will see this issue arising pretty much every second time there is a discussion involving any of such people. I'm not asking anyone to post in pristine clear English, and I'm not indulging anyone for their mistakes. It just really is kind of sad when you see members like klmz, zggzdydp, xipo, and gocha gradually and noticeably improve their English (even though their native languages are nowhere near English in grammar and syntax), while natives like AKA aren't even willing to spend a shred of an effort to proofread their posts. There is no "elitist bickering" here; it's just common courtesy to not post like a pre-teen if you're about 20 years old. So AKA gets exactly what he deserves in every such case.

Yes PJ, I'm glad to tell you actually have improved your language, and I'm also glad to see you're being conscious about it. :)

That's true. But as indicated by his last post here, completely missing a point and replying with something completely unrelated is not any better at all.

Here are two interesting suggestions to consider. Bisqwit, cut the offtopic (the last ~3 pages) into a separate thread. AKA, instead of going into a defensive stance as a gang-up victim (that's Phil's prerogative), improve your English already. So far no other native speaker here makes as many mistakes as you do; in fact, most non-native speakers here make much less mistakes. Thus, it is inevitable that you're going to be mocked for that reason, since many of your posts (quoted previously by me and others) are actually incomprehensible, especially for non-natives who just can't grasp the original meaning behind the words like "incompreshable", "embassed", and "comerate". This is your responsibility to write in a coherent manner, fyi, and Bisqwit has all the rights to point that out to you.

On topic of motion search range: the number there is a number of pixels, so it's safe to assume that if nothing within the game moves at 64 pixels per frame (in any direction applicable to the search type), it won't make sense to crank it up there. Exhaustive search may help with very fast AND complex movement, like if the screen is scrolling at a high speed and there are multiple background layers with other kind of motion going on there (a good example is S3&K, where Angel Island 2 and Sandopolis 1 exhibit exactly that kind of complexity). If unsure, take the part that you think is the hardest for encoder to handle out (1-2 minutes should be just enough), and do a test encoding (3-pass umh vs. 3-pass esa) to see if there are any benefits from exhaustive search. Also, don't forget that motion search range is basically multiplied by the amount of reference frames, so if you're using esa, it might make sense to lower the frameref to 10-12, definitely not 15-16 unless you want to wait for eternity for the last little bit of quality. On topic of two-pass vs. three-pass: the difference in global PSNR between 2nd and 3rd passes is usually about 0.5-2%, which is about the same kind of difference as between using umh and esa for almost every case. Expect the difference between 3rd and any subsequent pass to be lower than 0.5% (and thus, absolutely negligible).

While we're at it, let's not forget the previous version as well! [EDIT by Bisqwit: Replaced image with an URL reference. No need to overindulge.]

Try one of these: 1. Instead of "open", press "save" and double-click on saved file afterwards. 2. Copy the link, open µTorrent, then "open URL", copy the link there if it didn't appear automatically, confirm.

Lorenzo, 1. This TAS submission you're discussing here is a failure, and an obvious one at that. No need to shower it with dirt even more. And implying superiority without contributing anything remotely constructive at the same time simply makes you a dick. 2. Don't fault people for things you are clearly guilty of yourself. While your criticisms might be valid per se, it makes you a hypocrite. 3. Stop making submissions that break both the rules and the guidelines. 4. Learn to socialize properly before it's too late. Don't pad your posts with passive aggression, anger, or other unhealthy attitude. No-one needs it here. That being said, you should probably do it elsewhere indeed.

We don't lack emulation at all, we lack good sources of Amiga software.

That's not the point. FODA's initial question as I see it is whether it makes sense to judge TASes and unassisted runs equally from entertainment standpoint, not how bad a game choice the article exhibits.

Actually, I dig the idea, and have resorted to the same kind of lumping-all-together ideology previously when showing speedruns and other forms of superplays to the others. The biggest problem with this trying to rate their entertainment in the same league is incompatibility of appraising criteria, but it gets remedied when unassisted play is [near-]flawless or otherwise close to looking tool-assisted.

This isn't unique to SMAS/W, SMB had it the same way.

Hmm? Current Super Metroid encodes are very good, unless you mean the 14% run, which was published before H.264 came into use on this site.

By the way, a similar idea has been coined here before, roughly 2.5 years ago: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2677
