The type of people who don't RTFM? Admittedly, I've never been kinder to them.

Unfortunately that's not how things work here. Go read the rules — or actually, the entire FAQ, cause you've apparently missed the point of the site.

A folding@home machine. That's written there in the topic.

I've talked to Bisqwit on topic of FBA recently, but the conversation was quite inconclusive. Basically, unless my info is outdated, FBA is being worked on in order to add the missing rerecording features and improve functionality. The coder who has taken the task is pcc, the guy who added rerecording to Dega. However, there is a somewhat important problem. Apparently, FBA hasn't been frozen in development. It follows MAME's progress and continually adds support for new games or improves the existing. If you visit the official site you can see that the development goes at a steady pace. So the problem is: which version of FBA to take as a base for adding rerecording features? This is something Bisqwit didn't decide upon. The options: 1. Old version, the one available via the emulator resource page at the main site. No support for newer games, probably some other things, and who knows what else. 2. Current version from Barry Harris's site. 3. Some future version (which?). 4. Some other version (which and why?).

Hah, and Saturn didn't believe me when I said that using mockball when planting bombs could speed up the Dachora room. :D Nice strategy in Brinstar mainstreet. Originally I thought of avoiding damage there (it was a sacrifice of 3 frames or so relative to the previous method) and spending the energy elsewhere, but it seems your method is just the right way of spending it. :) The rest of Brinstar wasn't surprising for me, though, since it was the exact stuff I had in mind (or put into tests) when thinking up ideas for low% over the last several months. But it's really cool to know all the ideas have worked out! Another surprise was Crateria mainstreet where you used mockball to plant the first bomb, then unmorph to plant the second. How much faster is that? Overall, excellent WIP.

Cheapest dual-core Celeron with box cooler + some cheapo motherboard with on-board graphics + 512 MB of cheapest DDR2 RAM + scrap HDD (you don't need much space), stuff it into a minitower with 300W PSU, and you're set. Approximate cost in total: $190 or less. Alternatively, buy a used machine of the same calibre for $100 or less.

Huh? EUR160 = $250. If they make a game for $100 and sell for $250, that's $150 profit. They aren't losing a bit. Equalizing prices would work better if you could say that things that cost you one euro in Europe cost the same one dollar in USA. Unfortunately, this is never going to be the case.

Damn, I was going to work on that exact idea right after watching Cpadolf's latest any% TAS! Seems like a low% run has even less surprising things to showcase now. But please, go on. :)

It still baffles me why hacks and cheats aren't accepted because "the game must be real", "played with authentic hardware", "familiar to the audience", and then all concentration and work on this game go to the broken PAL version which doesn't have the same physics as the REAL GAME.
I hope that by "REAL GAME" you're referring to the arcade game it was ported from, and not something stupid like Japanese NES Rygar ROM. :P

Voted yes since it's already so much faster and more awesome than the old run, but would like to see some of RT's questions answered.

Well, that's indeed pretty fucked up. 240EUR is not a low price even for a standalone game PCB, but a console game that's not even a valuable collector's item? I think some people are just very eager to shoot themselves in the feet. With a bazooka or something.

I'm shocked that he made no mention of the biggest offender to this statement of all time: Megaman.
I think it was because he mainly targeted the current-gen console and PC games, which is why stuff like Megaman, which barely touched the current-gen, fell out of the scope.

I agree with most of it but some of it strikes me as 'waaah games are too hard waaah'.
In my understanding, the author was saying that challenge should not be artificial. In other words: 1) games that are meant to be easy should be easy, games that are made to be hard should be hard, and not otherwise; 2) challenge is supposed to be fun, at least for casual play, and not tedious or annoying due to having to wait, to waste time on filler, to memorize some unusually precise action, or something else like that; 3) giving a player challenge that suits their abilities is bound to be more rewarding than restricting their abilities to provide challenge. Agreeable?

Wow, this is the most clever and valid video game industry criticism I've read in a while, if not ever. Everything is spot-on, without resorting to humor or insults to pad the context, prove a point, or entertain merely for the sake of entertainment. Thanks, feitclub, great read.

Well, usage of gif is justified with this screenshot, much like it was justified with Faxanadu's blinking (and no-one seemed to cry for more gifs only because of it).

Maybe it's a misdiagnosed ADHD then? Due to overall failure to properly determine its presence and the fact that modern culture more-or-less makes people easily distractable, it's hard to say. Based on my own experience, I can say that I've always been easily distractable from processes I didn't enjoy much, but the real problems started only a couple years ago when I suddenly lost the ability to concentrate on anything (literally) for more than several minutes, regardless of whether it was fun or not.

Even if using gif as a screenshot won't work out, even the last frame of the animation will be sufficient for conveying delicious engrish-spiced irony.

That's because our liberal forum software doesn't discriminate. :D Also, much respect for the run. I haven't watched it yet, but gamebreaking is always a notable thing.
