My old nickname. :D Those are really the photos of a small version of moozooh, taken about 13-15 years ago.

What Cardboard said. This run is entertaining and of publishable quality now, so I naturally vote yes. I'm pretty sure it can be improved by about 60—80 seconds, though. Notable improvements would include the use of spider throw, killing several metroids during the screen transition (would save about 5—10 seconds alone), more intensive jumping and taking damage optimization and more intensive alpha/gamma fights optimization.

Hence the easy mode. Less enemies there, and they're dumber.

Heh, too bad we moved out of that flat more than 10 years ago. :D

Hero of the day: indeed, seems like you submitted your post while I was still typing mine. >_> Actually, mock-springballing through morphball tunnels isn't anything new, and it wasn't anything new even at the time of producing 100% v1 (see catnap222's Metroid Legacy run for reference). JXQ is (or at least should be) well aware of this trick, and he most likely didn't use it back then due to inattentiveness. Also, I didn't even realize Tonski was using Springball in his attempt as well (due to my own inattentiveness), that's why I didn't use it in my version. >_>

It can be done to a certain extent, otherwise there's not enough speed. The reason it's useless, though, is different: the only possible run that gets Screw Attack is the 100%, and you'd have Springball at that point, so you wouldn't need much speed to clear that gap, anyway. EDIT: LOL, I just realized JXQ didn't use Springball there in his run, even though it was kinda obvious. :D

Honestly, I didn't get this movie. I guess I should've played the game to understand anything. The flythrough plan is solid, though, so I don't have any complaints. Besides, the ending shot (with that overgrown insectoid presenting a pile of… something to the main hero) was pretty hilarious. I am assured that the movie is optimal, but such kind of games doesn't ring any bell with me. So I will vote meh.

moozooh, are you sure it's not Windows XP causing the darkness?
I am. My monitor isn't the brightest out there, but I've calibrated contrast & brightness and I generally don't have problems with them. So far, the only videos I experienced problems with were the aforementioned ones; SM64 and Tetrisphere are as bright as they should be (I'd even say Tetrisphere is more of the opposite — it's a bit whitish). And MK4 video is much darker than the picture I get on my emulator without adjusting the output plugin settings.

I see. I will vote yes, since I liked the run, and it was of publishable quality, anyway, but someone will have to improve this run some day. (I seem to remember adelikat having some plans on that matter a couple of weeks ago.) Also, the address for speed is 00FFE36C (2 bytes, signed). And the damage taking run will surely be good, I think it could help to save a lot of time.

Here's a question: have you used memory watch for monitoring Vectorman's speed? His means of acceleration are very interesting and will yield totally different results in different situations. Like, for example,
  • Vectorman's top running speed is 1024 units, and it increments in steps of 32 units per frame.
  • Jumps increment in 80 units per frame until 480, reach 512 on the next frame and continue incrementing further by 8 units per frame.
  • Jumping from a speed higher than 952 will reset it to 952 upon the moment of jump.
  • Landing after a jump while holding the same direction lowers your speed to 896, but a successful bunnyhop can avoid that (so it doesn't fall below 952).
  • By remaining airborne as long as possible, Vectorman can reach a speed of 1656 units even if he falls on a platform of the same height (it continues rising if he doesn't).
Etc. All in all, this is a very fine run (and Vectorman is one of my favorite games for Genesis), but I'm having an impression that it can be improved by a few more seconds.

Yes, it indeed saves some frames and JXQ is aware of that trick. :) Besides, Saturn has already shown it in one of his teasers.

Provided it's a TAS, and his was the unassisted run, you could probably cut the leveling by about 1/5 or something, and manipulate luck to do the rest. Is it possible?

Faster?.. (E) ROM runs at 50 frames per second, while (U) runs at 60 (which is why the (U) versions are favored for speedruns).

Pay closer attention to the first boss in the Arena. I'm sure, you'll notice even more things from Castlevania. ;)

May I request this movie to be redone on the (U) version of the game? As far as I know, there is not a single reason to continue making it on the European version instead. Version changes are usually discouraged only when they are the only source of improvements, which clearly isn't the case here.

I'm having an impression that after all these amazing "discoveries", Alter would have to restart his run once again, since it seems that it can be done another minute (or so) faster. :D Though I must say that the 100% run is getting more and more impressive with each new vbm! Wouldn't ever have imagined that from Metroid II, to be honest, so needless to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. Also, nice WIP, Cardboard. I'll discuss all the possible improvements once you're done with the test run.

Stereotype = a fixed, overly popular model of perceiving something. True = something universally agreed upon. I'm not seeing any contradictions.

Is there a reason why the console runners don't do this?
1) Too hard to do it; 2) too hard to do it fast; 2) too risky to place it at the end of a hard segment (the final segment will most likely contain Ridley fight as well as other things), and if using an additional save point, it'll hardly save some time (though it might be a good idea for someone who can pull it off consistently without wasting more time than it saves).

On the subject of entertainment: if this run will ever get redone, I DEMAND that the door that gets blasted by SA-X in the first cutscene is opened beforehand, as P.JBoy did it in his hard mode any%. I laughed really hard when SA-X opened an already open door with a super missile. :D
