Excellent underwater navigation. I especially liked that mockball to hidden 10-missile pack.

The emulation is poor (but could probably be tweaked by encoding at a faster rate and then slowing down the AVI or something).
I don't think it's possible. The frames are being dropped, not duplicated, so a speedup will only make it less comprehendable.

There wasn't that many mistakes, but for example shinesparking up that place where there's Etecoons, or getting the Spore Spawn super missiles without the Crystal Flash, and other small things like that. I assume those weren't known at that time? (at least the SS missiles)
Right, both weren't known back then, and JXQ will use these tricks in v2.

Not yet. He was in Maridia last time I asked.

To be honest, Saturn could have improved just as much in his early videos, and he is aware of it. JXQ is already working on an improvement to his 100% run, though, now extensively using memory watch. However, that doesn't mean that 100% v1 was of bad quality, not by a long shot. Using only the tricks that were known at the time of its production, not much could've been saved, several seconds at most.

Hey Maximus! Or is it… Maxmius? :P The screenshot was taken from an earlier version, but 0.10.1 has all the same. Not a biggie, but misspelling one's own name isn't the coolest thing on earth.

Voting yes! That was a great run, definitely, and a surprising one as well. I wonder what would a combo of Fang and Browny do on one of the full routes… That'd be double awesome, I guess.

you discarded the gens+ option ? it already has (partial) sms/gg.
I seem to remember Upthorn talking about it, presumably the SMS emulation code had to be ported from Gens+ or something like that. I'd go with adding SMS support to Gens, personally: the fewer emulators there are, the less hassle it is for everyone.

Alright, this is gonna be tough. :) Windows Vista speech recognition tested on Perl scripting. I'm only three minutes in, and I'm desperately trying not to wet my pants. This is some REALLY good stuff. Also, nice speech recognition engine.

Fighting games are a frequent exception due to their inherent repetitiveness.

Half-Life actually does a good job addressing some of those laws. Now that I've seen all the Episode 2 gameplay demos, I can say for sure that I'm thoroughly impressed. After the easy and inside-out scripted Episode 1, this one looks especially cool in every sense.

It's neat that Deus Ex breaks most of those rules.
Well, Deus Ex never was a shooter to begin with, so these rules don't apply to it.

Actually, the same could be applied to the allies' weapons (both stationary and mobile) as well, so there must be one more corollary about them as well.

From the above statement, it almost sounds like runs are judged differently based on what the community perceives to be the ultimate objective of a run.
Maximus, you weren't reading either what I wrote, or what both Vatchern and Sleepz stated as their primary goals. For the record, both of them aimed for maximum entertainment and traded speed for it accordingly, so likewise, a newer run should obsolete the preceding if it surpasses it in achieving the stated goal. Which, sadly, did not happen. If both aimed primarily for speed, accepting Vatchern's improvement would be a no-brainer. As for my example with Mortal Kombat, does the fact that the current version is 17:55, and the version it obsoletes 12:22, tells you anything? It's basically the same story. If both goals can't be achieved without hurting each other, the author should make a preference, and they have made it. Simple as that.
Maximus wrote:
As a result, does this mean that some runs will never be obsoleted?
It's not impossible, but Gradius is a good counterexample. It was kept there for stylistic reasons exclusively, and adelikat did a good job in both surpassing Morimoto in style and doing that without losing time.
Maximus wrote:
Or could they be obsoleted by longer runs that are even more "entertaining".
See the example with MKII.
Maximus wrote:
I'm not trying to be facetious, but pose a simple question of "can a game have two runs, one for speed, one for fun?" Is this where concept demos come into play?
If the one that is "for speed" is much less entertaining than the one "for fun", then it's most likely that the vast majority would prefer the latter due to obvious reasons.

My Strider run beats the current wip by 20 minutes, but it may not be all that exciting. Should both exist?
I haven't watched the long version, but in my opinion based on what I've seen so far, Strider is an example of a game that is better done in less time as possible (unless there are some very entertaining things going on in the long version that I don't know about). EDIT: grammar.

Wow, I've never seen this much difference of opinion over a 10%+ time improvement.
That's because time wasn't the primary goal in either of the runs. Moreover, if you improve a run like that of Mortal Kombat II by 50% of its time (which is very possible), it'll be rejected instantly.

I recommend a re-record. If every other frame is indeed a dropped frame, then there is no excuse whether or not some people can view it. It should be fixed to a quality AVI.
The frames may appear dropped due do decimation, otherwise the encode is fine.

Strange, it playes perfectly fine for me (MPC+ffdshow, Athlon 64 3400+), aside from several-frames-long freezes on nearly every fade-in and fade-out (but it can hardly be the video's fault).

Unfortunately, I'll have to vote no. I've directly compared some of the fights between this and Sleepz's version, and while Vatchern was inarguably faster, he failed to deliver variety that Sleepz tried (and to a certain extent, succeeded) to show. Just compare the fight vs. Simon in both versions: the previous had variety and style and hence was interesting to watch, the current is repetitive to boot. So it is an improvement, but worse than I thought it would be, and definitely worse than it could have been, due to the reasons stated. I really looked forward to this run. :(

Seconded, with an exception that not only PC games have (and benefit from) bhopping implemented to a certain extent.
