Well, let's be fair: in this case the "hard work" is mainly waiting for Aktan's computer's CPU to dump and process the same movie, as the rest of the process is otherwise identical. I'm somehow sure the SM64 team would have submitted the new version anyway if this one had been published by the time of the recent discovery.

Shouldn't there be another pod segment, or am I remembering this wrong? I thought there were three.

Hi, Fabian. How's life treating you nowadays? Did you find yourself a nice job you're comfortable with? In the past couple years, I've experienced many things, seen true love, become more human, felt things I've never felt before, improved my intuition and observational skills, understood myself and my life better and realized what I need to do to improve it further. Lots of interesting progress, though some of it did require a lot of painful cracking of my inner shells to let things grow. Unlike Bisqwit, however, religion wasn't involved. At the moment I'm in a huge financial pickle (both myself and my parents have taken loans, and at the moment I'm the only one of us three who has a regular job; I didn't really see this coming back in summer), the state military service is after me, and I have to get myself a second regular job to be able to support all this and some further needs financially. Still, I feel better and more motivated to do something meaningful than ever before, and this is completely awesome because changes for the better are already happening. I do hope I won't have to sell my body thanks to all of these debts, though, that wouldn't be so awesome. :D (j/k) Really hope you're having something good in your life as well!

So we can only get along if we turn a blind eye on your silly little antics. Sounds like a sweet deal, right? You're pretty full of yourself, mr. Pixel g0 Red.

I would've deleted that and issued a warning, but this gem should be preserved for laughs and go down in history as a shining example of hypocrisy on the part of codeportalofsymbolicpixelgoroundxrainred. Though, coming to think of it, I'll still issue a warning because calling one of the more helpful members of the site a worthless poseur is just… wrong.

It is indeed more worthy of a publication compared to the run at SDA (no offense intended; I've already expressed my opinion on that run several times on the SDA forum), but the merits of having it published here are dubious at best. Still, stuff like this is more entertaining than some of the long 8.0+ rated runs just because it's not as painful to watch. Voting meh.

Wow, awesome! Also, please embed the videos as you see fit. Most people just don't bother or don't understand how.

I'm a big fan of Garegga, and I've actually tried TASing it around two years ago for the exact same purpose. Unfortunately the emulation was highly unstable so I couldn't continue without FBA constantly crashing for various reasons. I wonder if it's any different now?.. Anyway, here's some more information if any one of you picks this up. 1. "Harder" mode starts off on a higher rank initially. I'm not sure of the exact differences in starting rank or rank caps. The cap might or might not be higher than the one set by "very hard" dip switch. That switch only regulates per-frame rank increase rate and the max rank cap. 2. The rank doesn't increase upon each consecutive play indefinitely, it just raises the starting value a little bit over the time and stops at a certain threshold that doesn't dramatically differ from the default. 3. Set the board region to USA via dip switches to increase the base rank increase rate. 4. A good trick to drive the rank up faster is to choose Gain as your starting ship, immediately increase the autofire rate to 30 Hz through a shortcut, pick up four options ASAP, and hug the top of the screen with straight option formation for as long as needed for the value to max out, going away from the top only to pick up power up items. This will bypass the "Space Invaders syndrome" Gain's options normally have (new projectiles can't spawn from the same source as long as the previous ones are still on the screen), allowing for an immense rank increase rate. 5. Make no mistake, the game will lag with lots of bullets on the screen. Kind of defeats the purpose at some points, since the game slows down enough to be able to dodge the bullets without tool-assistance if you're playing smart enough to leave wide openings in the attacks and not move around needlessly.

Keep in mind that: 1) most of the scenes are pretty trivial; 2) in many cases, max score requires a lengthy setup to catch more bullets in the frame. In regards to Touhou games, Perfect Cherry Blossom would likely benefit the most because its scoring system is the hardest to max out. Most runs by HS参謀 are pretty damn awesome, though. Fairy Wars would be nice as well.

I think drawing these imaginary lines beforehand with no danger in sight smells of cowardice. There might be both bad and good things to gain from confronting the unexpected, and by drawing these lines we prevent either. I agree, it is very much a mental masturbation, because coming to a conclusion makes you feel like you're already in control of a potential future controversy, but by the time such decision becomes necessary both the circumstances and current conjecture might render it inapplicable, obsolete, or otherwise unwanted. I think, if a future tournament mode run is submitted it will most definitely compete with this one, just as a full game run will compete with a full game one.

You could at least try quoting the post you were replying to, considering three more people had already posted after that without going further off-topic. Which is actually something I would like you to do in the first place: not going off-topic.

It occurs to me that it's installed by some programs and it breaks functionality due to a permission conflict on Vista and possibly 7. Some of the threads in that search query suggest deleting the file. If you're looking for Samsung drivers, I suggest starting with Samsung's site.

In regards to over-the-top scenarios, some of them, regardless of having been achieved unassisted, are just a consequence of going too fast while still respecting the game engine's intended interaction with objects (it's just that precision involved in this case helps us avoid slowdowns that would usually prevent this from being feasible, which is largely the same case with instances of doing so in unassisted speedruns). In this case I have two questions. 1. How many instances of going over the top would occur in an any% to achieve fastest completion without using that to set up a zip/wraparound? 2. What consistutes the top: top edge of the screen, or a certain vertical coordinate? Also, a semi-unrelated question: what would be Tails's role in a glitchless/low-glitch run aside from killing bosses faster?

That's… quite a list. Aren't some items redundant? Underflow is a private case of zipping and both are a way to go through solid objects (keeping in mind that solidity at the moment of passing through is hardly relevant here), wrapping around a stage requires going over the top in one way or another. Defining top correctly would probably help a lot. What other glitches are there, anyway, aside from the listed?

Of course, the other problem is the site's obsession with absolute perfection. The 120-star TAS has been held up for who knows how long because people keep finding small improvements to stars. The MM TAS has been held up because I keep finding improvements and Grunz goes back to fix them. A small concession about absolute frame perfection could go a long way towards runs being made.
I'm pretty certain that it's not the "site's obsession" with absolute perfection, rather than a handful of purists among some of the popular games' respective communities who keep insisting the runs be redone at every possible opportunity. In case with short runs like this, most of us, let alone the general public, quite honestly don't give a shit if there is 1 frame saved at a certain moment in a run, or 3. As long as the general approach doesn't change and there isn't anything obvious missing, it's going to look the same every time. But SM64 is lucky enough to have a camera which can by itself provide the much-needed variety, otherwise you'd see more complaints about any% being improved over and over and over. Personally, I stopped caring about pretty much every whored-out run out there because there is only so much excitement for me to be had looking at some 10 seconds' (in some cases a lot less) worth of actual changes spread over several minutes of otherwise well-known stuff (really makes me want to have some kind of a diff generator for TASes to skip old content). I do agree, however, that this particular submission is by far not the best example. After all, it saved more time over the published run than the published run saved over the first 0-star submission. Even in absolute count, it is indeed a very good improvement.

Also, the notion of a concept demo seconded. It doesn't complete the game, but it does demonstrate a few quirks in a short and reasonably entertaining fashion. Yes vote.

Not violating physical boundaries of objects would be a start, I guess. :)

I'm pretty sure that by this point the submission should be called "marzojr's Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles in 29:51.2". You've replayed each level diligently, and if snippets of Nitsuja's and Upthorn's input still remain after that, it is because you couldn't make them any better and chose to leave them in, so they are now governed by the principles of succession. This stuff is groundbreaking, and though some of my favorite stylistics of the previous movies were skipped, I appreciated how long you have dodged the rings at the end of Death Egg. I pay attention to details like that, it's really awesome. Yes vote. That being said, I now feel stronger than ever that this game needs a true glitchless run as well. I appreciate major skips in games where gameplay by itself isn't too varied or exciting (i. e., "hold right to win"), but Sonic 3 is far from that. To me it has already crossed the point where each subsequent iteration removes more and more of what I consider entertaining from the result. I like precise lengthy gameplay better than slightly less lengthy setups for zips, like moving under a pillar, looking up, or going back a couple screens at the beginning of a stage to end up at the boss. Oh well.

It works in DKC, as reflected by Tompa's very recent submission. It's largely the same glitch for most intents and purposes in both games, except in DKC 2 it warps you to the end of the stage, not to a random stage. I asked him about DKC 3 and he said he already tried it there and it didn't work.

Haha, wreckage! This TAS is comedy gold, 9 in entertainment easily. Could be higher if half of the more interesting levels weren't skipped.

Look at these three videos: [1], [2], [3] (around the 14:45 mark) more carefully. You'll see that, by directing the void object at certain targets you can change their properties, move or teleport them. These examples show how the published runs could be improved using this glitch, and I'm sure we'll see at least half a dozen more applications before we can consider its potential depleted.

I believe that's a first global game-breaking glitch we're seeing for this game. As far as I understand it basically allows indirectly editing the coordinates of various objects, be it an enemy, barrel, checkpoint, or a carried item. :o Sorry, Dooty! It seems you have to go back to the drawing board. :D
