I use a standard grey N64 controller plugged into a USB adaptor.
I think FODA told me that the randomness was sort of set in the game, and rerecording wouldn't do anything, but I probably misunderstood him. I guess I'll have to try it; it would look terrible if it were 6 minutes long in the final run.
Yeah, I realized that after I posted the run. Well, I'm inexperienced with making a run on this site, so I'm learning.
Hmm...you're probably right.
Yep, I'll make sure to do that... Also, I know there's lag, but I have no idea how to fix it with the camera angles.
Yea, like I said, both those strategies sort of take a really long time to get, and I didn't want to spend so much time on them.
Heh heh. From looking at the test run, it seems like the vast majority of the stars wil look pretty much the same as FODA did them (strategy-wise), just with a little bit of coin-avoiding... Does anyone think it would be okay to try some different routes, even at the cost of time? It would make the run a little more unique, though it wouldn't be as fast as possible.
He is? I didn't know that... I guess I should stop labeling the .m64 files "MRZ".
Anyway, like I said, pretty much all of the JRB stars should be ignored, and I couldn't help the Chuckya star. There is a shell in JRB, but it's pretty useless; it's possible to swim faster than it, I think. This test one was just to try out some different routes; I didn't bother with anything impressive, like camera angles. Anyway, I'll start working on a WIP in a couple of days.
Well, the world's crappiest test run is finally done...
A few small notes:
-Obviously, since this is just a test, I didn't do any castle BLJing (or any other BLJing, almost), and therefore, the route in the castle will be way different in the final run. It'll go something like this:
1. Lakitu Skip
2. Lobby Glitch into JRB (or on small stairs, if possible) + Exit Course
3. Lobby Glitch into WF + Exit Course
4. Lobby Glitch into CCM + Exit Course
5. BoB normally + exit normally
6. Lobby Glitch into PSS
7. Lobby Glitch into B1 + Exit Course
8. Lobby Glitch into PSS
9. Go normally, MIPS glitch through 30 Star Door
10. Go normally, Exit Course, go to Basement, get MIPS 2 star
10. Go normally, BLJ up remaining staircases
-I accidentally picked up one coin; I would've redone it, but....you'll see
-Completely disregard JRB, especially Star 16... It was really late at night, and I had no idea how long I took with the star until it was way too late to redo it
-I have no idea what's gonna happen with "Quick Race Through Downtown!"... I don't think a six minute star would be acceptible, but I don't see any way to speed it up
-Enjoy the final star.... It was by far the hardest to do (it made "Pyramid Puzzle" feel like "Shoot into the Wild Blue"), and it took almost 800 rerecords
-The finishing time on here was about an hour and twenty minutes. I'm hoping that if it's all perfectly optimized, it can be pushed down to around 1:05 - 1:10...
So, enjoy. Comments are appreciated.
BTW: Everyone else sees mr_roberts_z's avatar as that AVATARITY.COM ad right? I was browsing this forum one day in IE and saw it was supposed to be a tiger or something. I never knew this since Firefox has always showed it to be that ad though.... you should get a different host :P
Heh, yeah, I know abut that, sometimes I see the ad myself. I'm relitively inexperienced with avatars, so I just Googled "avatars" and went to the first site. I''=ll probably choose something else.
mr_roberts_z has a video of him BLJing on a sign. Would it be possible to BLJ on a sign and go through the slide building of CCM without touching a coin? there are multiple signs in that area.
It's a nice idea, but fairly unlikely... THe sign that I BLJ'd from was one of those arrow signs, not a sign with a message. It seemed to be built of an invisible wall; I tried it on all the other signs in BoB, but that was the only one. I'll give it a shot though, there's always hope.
But rght now I'm stuck on the Chuckya part of the test... It just won't turn into a damn star.
EDIT: Would anyone be okay if I skipped it in the test run? It seems like this can only be gotten once in a very long time, and I'd rather it be in the real run than in the test run.
EDIT 2: I got it!
I'm working on the test run... I'm at 47 stars, and I'm stuck on "Quick Race Through Downtown!"... I'm trying to use the Chuckya glitch, but the object just won't turn into a star... Any tips?
how many stars is possible to do this cccless run? you have to take coins in 2 stars per stage, and you have to take coins in cap zones and bowser zones. If i'm not mistaken thats 36 stars that can't be taken
Don't forget Wing Mario Over the Rainbow...
Yeah, there are quite a few normal stars that are impossible; I put up a thread on the GameFAQs board asking for a list; they usually know these things. Hopefull we'll get a good list soon.
But it'll surely be entertaining if you can pull it off. good luck to you
Thanks!
EDIT: Curtis Bright has supplied this list:
Wing Mario over the Rainbow
Eye to Eye in the secret room
Collect the Caps...
Into the Igloo
Mario Wings to the Sky
Big Penguin Race
Slip Slidin' Away
Snowman's Lost his head
All red coin stars (23 total)
All 100-coin stars (15 total)
Thanks for the thread... Yep, hopefully in the process, we may discover more stars, and new strats...
As I said in the original thread, I'll start working on a test run, and it should be done soon.
Well, I'm not sure how many people are interested, but FODA and I talked for a while, and I decided that a 70 Star TAS isn't worth it. However, instead of that, I decided to do a full CCC TAS. I think this is more logical because it has a main goal, so there'll be no arguing about shortcuts, BLJ, etc... Anyone agree?
Anyway, I'm gonna work on a test run, and it should be done before the 25th.
Just out of curiousity, does Mario's stars-out-the-butt triple jump actually help? For the purposes of setting a record on individual levels, are there any that could be done faster after getting 120 stars?
Yeah, check the SM64 part of SDA. IIRC, they have a couple of Koopa 1 records by Curtis Bright and Myles Bukrim that use the special triple jump.
I strongly support BoltR's crawling Mario TAS...
Anyway, I think I stumbled upon something fairly major while experimenting for the first star...I think I was going so fast that I somehow confused the power meter. I can walk around and do whatever I want, including exiting the course and going into other courses. What I found to be pretty important about this was that Mario could take as much damage as he wanted, and continue to have the same power meter. I was walking around in the Lobby with it, and it suddenly disappeared. Then I tried losing some power, and the same empty meter came up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MRBAuZml7UEDIT: It may just be a corrupted ROM.
Nah, I am going to use the BLJ glitch, even in the Lobby, but I now agree that there isn't much need for a 70 star run. I'm still going to do it, but purely for fun.
Yep... The first thing I'm gonna do is start over, because I see why the first star was 10 frames slower than FODA.
Anyway, thanks for the agreement so far, it gives me encouragement. :)
Well, I decided. I'm gonna do the run, using whatever glitches make the run the fastest. I will go into the doors in the order of how I can normally get in them, but glitch through them as much as possible, simply to avoid the opening sequence. After the run is done, I'll submit it, but won't be surprised or upset if it's rejected. In the meantime, I'll work on the run, and give normal updates and .m64 files, just like FODA and AKA did.
Sound good?
Here's how I see it:
I use whatever necessary to skip the door opening sequences. I still only go through doors only when I'd usually be allowed to (when nromally playing). I see that as a combination of how the game-makers intended the game to be played, as well as minimizing the time of the run...
Does that sound fair?
However, usually the most traditional way to solve something like this is a vote, so I can halt this for a few days to get the general opinion for how the run should be made... Do you want a vote?
It's your movie and I would say to go with whichever option is most appealing to you. You're the one who has to enjoy making it.
Normally, I would, but after this is finished, I'll obviously be submitting it..and if the option that I choose goes against the general opinion, it may be rejected....which I don't want.
I knew this would be the main problem with a 70 star run. Everyone has a completely different opinion of what a 70 star run should involve... Personally, I was planning on using this option (3. Get 70 stars the way Nintendo intended - go through the doors in order of when they can be opened (but glitching through if it's faster) ) for every door after the Lobby, but I'd be happy to start over and apply that to the whole Lobby, since it would only add a couple of seconds.
However, usually the most traditional way to solve something like this is a vote, so I can halt this for a few days to get the general opinion for how the run should be made... Do you want a vote?
Here's what I have planned for the rest of the Lobby; if anyone can see any improvements, let me know.
Lakitu Skip into Castle to avoid Lakitu Message. Lobby Glitch into WF.
1. Chip Off Whomp’s Block
2. To the Top of the Fortress
3. Shoot into the Wild Blue
4. Red Coins on the Floating Isle
5. Drop onto the Caged Island
6. Blast Away the Wall
Enter WF, exit course, Lobby Glitch into CCM.
7. Slip Slidin’ Away
8. Lil’ Penguin Lost
9. Wall Kicks Will Work
Enter CCM, exit course, Lobby Glitch into PSS.
10. PSS Under 21’’
11. Mario Wings to the Sky
Double jump to BoB door, enter BoB
12. Behind Chomp’s Gate
13. Big Bobomb on the Summit (may be subject to change)
14. Shoot to the Island in the Sky
15. Mario Wings to the Sky
Exit BoB normally, Lobby Glitch into BitDW
16. Bowser in the Dark World
Exit course from BitDW, Lobby Glitch into PSS again
17. PSS
Head to BBH normally.
BTW, if all goes to plan, there shouldn't be a single door sequence thruogh the entire run (yes, including the DDD/B2 door).
