just for clarification: on a vine, if you press left+right, it will teleport you either to the extreme right of the screen or to the extreme left. I'm not entirely sure what determines which way you'll go. regardless of what objects are on the extreme right or left of the screen, mario will be teleported there, so this can be used to get inside walls if the stage allows for it. if you're on the left side of the vine, the teleport is immediate. if you're on the right side of the vine, you will let go and start dropping to the ground. if you grab the vine again while you're falling, you'll teleport. the downside is that the screen will not scroll as a result of the teleport, therefore the time lost making the vine appear, getting to the vine and then performing the glitch will most likely not match the time it takes to simply travel to that location. the only place I can think where it would save time is at the end of 8-2 in SMB2, but I haven't tested anything yet. edit:and now that I test it, it's slower because the upper 1 block-tall platform at the edge of the screen is vertically aligned with the top of the vine, therefore mario can't get on top of it any faster, and teleporting anywhere lower is definitely slower than just running and jumping on the platform.

Well, with Basilisk/SheepShaver you have to have the right rom, you have to have a virtual hard disk and you have to have the actual game and everything involved with the game to be in a certain state for a movie to sync, whereas with an Apple II emulator it's theoretically just a matter of loading the game's disk image and a movie file.

well, there was an edition of Oregon Trail for Mac OS. I see Apple II rerecording being much more feasible than Mac OS, as it behaves more like a console.

That happens any time you fall in a bottomless pit while in the flagpole animation, and it effectively forces you to reset, as there's no way to get out of it. That occurred because the vine glitch teleported him over a bottomless pit. Oddly, this bug has no effect if he falls during the axe animation (Mario doesn't even lose a life).

Keep in mind that the YouTube video leaves some of the stuff done during wait periods out, due to its apparent 30fps limit. Not that you're missing much, but I figure it's worth mentioning.
if it has to be a Mario hack, I'd pick something with less waiting around (or at least an arena with more things to do while waiting around).
I had an idea to do Air 2, which is Air but with no infinite jumps, but it turned out that the most prevalent solution is to just run across the top of the stage, so I nixed that early on as something to put a lot of effort into (you can see the "pseudo-tas" at my youtube channel). Other than that, HRM is pretty much everything ever done in any hard Mario hack compressed into ten stages, and I figured it would be a great game for a superplay given that it's Mario, it's impossibly hard and it features a ridiculous number of glitches. I'm very proud of and very much enjoy watching this movie (which is way more than I can say for...say, Animaniacs), but I guess I have much more of a geeky fixation on this particular game's engine than most other TASers. Also, thanks for watching and for giving comments, everyone :)

some parts still seemed unoptimal

Most of the time, yes, I did enjoy it. Parts of 1-A are really unfun to do, but most of it came out pretty nicely.

At 03:04, did you delibrately fall down because I see no reason why you did that.
Yes, that was deliberate, because if I were to turn around and start running for the far away block, the plant would've lowered before I could get enough speed to make the jump. In that section I basically have to get their "cycles" in the right sync so I can make the jump without getting hit.
I did not understand what happened at around 06:02.
Rapid jumping so the lift wouldn't pull me through the bottom block. It could probably have been done with a single jump, but I doubt it would result in anything significant.
I was under the impression that fire mario's shots bounce?
They'll bounce on the spikes occasionally, though I have no idea what makes them do that.

Doesn't include the extra levels (2-x, 3-x, etc), voting no.
Only one stage is even worth showing. Why didn't I show it? I dunno. It's one stage. It's hardly worth voting no over.
shots hitting platforms instead of Bowser
I still don't understand the "mechanics" of the Bowser fight, because a hit on the platform seems like it counts for a hit on Bowser too; at least that's what the clear movie led me to believe.

Um...are you sure there are four unnecessary waits in 1-1?
I think this would appeal to people who eat, sleep and breathe SMB, but not the average viewer.
I think it appeals to those who are either new to tases or who are smb enthusiasts, but those who are neither may end up bored. For some reason I figured that tasvideos would be the best audience to show this to, but the hack isn't receiving as many positive reactions as I thought it would (though, thankfully, it has received some).

You say that as if the levels were intended to be completed without insane glitching. On the contrary, that's the whole point of the hack. You should take a closer look, it's not nearly as mindless as you think; the levels are obscenely detailed and created by people who know SMB inside and out.

the run doesn't satisfy the good condictions of a TAS
Well, it's tool-assisted and does impressive things. But hey, whatever.
it neither plays for entertainment or speed.
The second line of the submission text disproves this statement.
It felt like a real time player playing through the game with great caution.
That's almost insulting. It would be unreasonable to ask everyone who watches this movie to extensively study the smb engine and recognize the many subtle nuances in the level design that makes the solutions so very steadfast and immutable, but there is no way that a capable TASer can look at the actions performed in this movie and state seriously that anyone could do more than maybe two or three in real time. Despite the relatively low rerecord count on this particular movie, I've put a considerable amount of work into studying the solutions to this game and the technical aspects of the many quirks utilized to achieve them, and for someone to dismiss that as "real-time with savestates" is utterly baffling and somewhat frustrating.

I'd have to see the unnecessary pauses dealt with before I'd cast a yes vote.
Um...there was only one. Or, at least there was only one that was really noticable.

why is this a concept demo but Adelikat & JXQ's RCR run isn't? stick with one and stay consistent, damn it! :)

You missed a shot on Bowser, among other things.
Bowser's positioning is really, really random, and it took me forever to even get him to where he wouldn't try to trample me while I'm simultaneously jumping around on the moving platform, trying to avoid the spikes and shooting fireballs. In the clear movies that come with the hack, some stuff is done that requires randomness that I just couldn't acheive, try as I may, and the perfect Bowser positioning in 1-A is one of them. So all in all, it's a lot of things to juggle even in frame advance, so I guess I didn't notice when I missed a shot. It's not a great justification, but I might as well explain myself. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
if this is the hardest now then shouldnt this obsolete air?
No, I think this movie complements rather than replaces Air. They're both very good and well-thought out hacks that each have something unique to show.

this was full of awesome. totally full. yes, I'm aware of and I love the small-only run, but this run packs more cool shit into nearly half the length. it arguably also has more style. yes vote. also, another yes vote for making donut secret 1 entertaining somehow.

My hypothesis on why this trick happens is based on the following: 1. If Mario grabs the flagpole, the flag lowers, and then something happens that stops him from making it to a solid block to run into (which triggers the score tally and loading of the next stage), then mario can go back and grab the flagpole again. However, the game recognizes the flag is down and thus doesn't play that animation again. 2. In this situation, Mario grabs the flagpole while he's intersecting the block. On the very next frame, the block ejects him, but Mario is still holding onto the flagpole. Since this happens within two frames, the game has time to register that the pole has been grabbed, but not enough time to play the flag animation before the block ejects him, so when the block ejects him I think Mario is actually grabbing the pole a second time. Given that 1 is true, I think the game doesn't play the animation because it thinks the flag is already lowered. That's my thoughts on it, anyway. Also, jumping through the stairs in 4-2 isn't possible because there's no ceiling to further push Mario into the wall (so if he jumps, he just jumps out of the block).
